MESSAGE FROM THE Board Chairman
On behalf of your Board of Governors, I am pleased to contribute to the 2022 Annual Review of Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK). I hope you enjoy the showcase in this publication of AISHK and its community in 2022.
The Australian International School Foundation Limited (AISFL) Board of Governors works closely with the School Executive to build on AISHK’s position as a leading international school in Hong Kong, and as a pillar of Hong Kong’s Australian community. The AISFL Board comprises members of the Australian community in Hong Kong who govern the school on a volunteer basis. The Board meets regularly to set the strategy for the school, to oversee school matters, and to guide the overall direction of AISHK. Diversity in skills, experience, and knowledge among governors contributes to the continued success of the school. There are several Board committees that work to support AISHK, these are:
• The Governance Committee led by Ms Kym Fortescue, which reviews policy and ensures prudent and transparent management of the school.
• The Finance Committee led by Mr Andrew Macintosh, which has responsibility for the school’s finances.
• The Facilities Committee led by Mr Dennis Wong, monitors and advises on ongoing maintenance, expansion and capital projects.
• The Development and Fundraising Committee led by Dr Joseph Lee, considers fundraising strategies and works with the school’s development office to support stakeholder engagement and communications.
Two members of the board left during 2022 and we welcomed one new member. In July, Deputy Consul General Mr Ryan Neelam left AISHK (and Hong Kong) after serving on the Board of Governors for three years. We thank Ryan for his contributions and wish him the very best in all his future endeavours. With Ryan’s departure, Deputy Consul General Alistair McEachern was welcomed to the AISFL Board during Term 4. Dr Dan Hooley, who joined the board on March 1, 1999, departs AISHK in December after more than two decades of outstanding service, including several years as Chair of the AISFL Board. Dan has done fantastic things for AISHK and for the Australian community in Hong Kong. Dan’s presence at the school will be missed by all who have been blessed to work alongside him, and we offer thanks to Dan for his many contributions.
A good portion of the 2022 school year was impacted by COVID-19, but the eventual easing of pandemic related restrictions saw the AISHK community work together to ensure the best possible experience for students. The resumption of on-campus learning in April and

the return of many activities throughout 2022 were a welcome change and a start on the return to normal school operations.
Together with the School Executive, the Board monitors and assesses the school’s performance through platforms including external reviews, and parent and staff surveys. The 2022 parent satisfaction survey invited parents of students in Years 2, 6, 9 and 12 to provide feedback on AISHK across a wide range of areas. An overview of the outcomes is provided in this publication. The Board thanks all participants and sees it as crucial to our growth that we identify areas for improvement by seeking community input.
In December, we farewelled Head of School and long-serving member of the School Executive, Howard West. A valued member of AISHK since 1998, Howard’s dedication and commitment has been integral to the school’s success. His contributions to AISHK have been significant in shaping AISHK and making it the wonderful institution that it is today. We thank Howard for the service and leadership that he provided.
Also in December, we welcomed Mina Dunstan as our next Head of School. Mina is an experienced school leader and is committed to delivering academic excellence, community engagement, and building an inclusive and diverse learning environment that promotes respect, global citizenship, and cultural understanding. We look forward to working with Mina and supporting her leadership of the school.
Thank you to the students, staff, parent body and Parent Association committees for supporting AISHK through your incredible efforts. Our school has faced challenges during the past year, but its continued strength is due in large part to your hard work, your valued loyalty, and your generosity.
It is a privilege to be entrusted with overseeing AISHK, but it is a significant commitment that takes a great deal of time, so I thank my Board colleagues for their efforts and hard work. I am grateful for their ongoing commitment and all that they do for our school.
I look forward to welcoming you back in 2023 for a fantastic year ahead.

MESSAGE FROM THE Head
of School
Welcome to the 2022 Annual Review.
The start of this year pivoted to online learning and required us to draw upon previous years’ experience. Our students’ flexibility and engagement along with their teachers well-honed online practices ensured that we entered the “Year of The Tiger” with strength.
As AISHK values student voice and agency, the 2022 Student Representative Council (SRC) leaders provided a report from a secondary student survey to the Heads of Departments about student opinions around online learning. The process and results were insightful and were published in Dhanara in March for the community. The primary SRC also continued to meet and share student ideas with their teachers.
The IB and HSC results for the Class of 2021 were released at the start of this year and, as always, our students were delighted with their outcomes. Notably, there were 10 students who were listed in the NSW Distinguished Students list for obtaining a Band 6 (90+) in one or more HSC subjects. Also, 58% of the IB and HSC students received an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank above 80, with the average ATAR being 84. An infographic video of the Class of 2021 results and the related publication, Class of 2021 Pathways, were released in April and are accessible through the Career Education report in this yearbook.

Term 2 saw the joyous return to full-day, on-campus school life for students. The community embraced the active school planner, populated with camps and activity days, excursions and incursions, sport and ECA opportunities. The everyday interactions such as play on the field and hallway chatter was once again abundant. Community events coordinated by the Parent Association were also a welcome return to the social events repertoire.
Our student numbers remain healthy and the school showed great teamwork in maintaining this through a variety of student recruitment activities, including three open days targeted to the audiences of families with children in Reception – Year 2, Years 3-6 and Years 7-12. All events were widely promoted and
garnered high attendance, already yielding results with numerous families already choosing AISHK as the school for their child.
The achievements of AISHK and its growth to the school it is today, has been possible only through the collaborative determination of our entire community.
I thank AISHK staff for their teaching and leading of our students, especially in managing the bouts of online learning. Thank you to parents and AISHK Parent Association, for their loyalty and for maintaining community connections, hope and happiness. To our exceptional students who, even in the face of varied conditions, continue to strive and flourish; thank you for exhibiting much school pride and making AISHK a leading international school.

Admissions Report
In early 2022, AISHK admissions continued to be impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.
In the first quarter of 2022, the School welcomed families from the UK and Sweden and saw limited interest from Australia among other countries. We did however receive interest from other international and local schools in Hong Kong, due to AISHK being able to run full-day classes before other schools were in a position to do so.
With the gradual easing of pandemic-related travel obstacles and health measures, we saw numerous AISHK families return
New Enrolments
to Hong Kong and to the School.
From mid-way through 2022, there was notable increase and interest from countries within Asia, including Singapore, Korea and China. We saw the return of the reconnaissance trips to Hong Kong, which lead to an uptick in school tours for those families interested in AISHK.
In the last quarter of 2022, we noted further interest in AISHK from families in Australia, particularly for midPrimary and early Secondary.

Professional Learning
The lifting of COVID-19 workplace restrictions occurred in time for school year commencement at AISHK. The learnings around innovation and adaptability of delivering professional learning during previous years was evident in 2022, as the School offered a dynamic range of in-person, online, external and internal programs. The AISHK staff professional learning program continued to include smaller, targeted professional learning activities this year.
As restrictions, particularly those related to international travel, continue to ease, AISHK looks forward to the opportunity to again invite and host experts from a range of fields and from around the world to present in our school professional learning program.

Facilities Committee Report 2022
Committee Chair: Committee Members:
The Facilities Committee convenes on a regular basis and its purpose is to plan and review operations, upgrade projects, renovations and maintenance for all facilities of the AISHK campus. The Committee reviews monthly facilities reports from the School’s facilities department and coordinates and assesses all Operational Health and Safety (OH & S) and security issues relating to campus facilities. Liaising with and seeking advice from professional architects, the Committee provides advice and recommendations with regards to major building projects
All aspects of the campus are taken into consideration by the Committee, including but not limited to classrooms, bathrooms, gymnasiums and the Aquatic Centre. The committee is tasked with ensuring the entire facility is run smoothly, safely and efficiently, all to serve the school community as best as possible. As the building ages, we recognise that costs relating to maintenance will rise and upgrades will be regularly reviewed. In 2022, the planning and implementation of improvement work to the following areas was successfully actioned:
• Repainting of the Western (Tim Fuk Rd) building façade and renewing the Hong Kong Jockey Club signage for the Academic Wing
• Complete renovation of the Kinox Food Technology Room on the 7th Floor. This included installing German Pool equipment. A significant contribution was made by Kinox Limited and German Pool to ensure that the facility accommodated up-to-date, relevant appliances.
• Renovation of the Learning Centre on the 2/F to create a more flexible learning space and an additional classroom.
• Renovation of a large 6/F classroom to create a further classroom and office space.
• Installation of signage frames on Tum Fuk Rd to display School branding.
• Continuing the installation of vinyl non-slip flooring around the school. Looking towards 2023, plans are to renovate the Library on the 5th Floor. We will also continue to follow the repainting schedule and continue with the program to install vinyl non-slip flooring to further areas around the School to improve safety.

As impacts of COVID-19 are ongoing, the timeline and budgeting of these for projects were carefully reviewed in collaboration with the Finance Committee to ensure prudent decisionmaking on spending during this period.
I would like to thank my Committee colleagues for their valuable expertise and continued support. It has been a pleasure to serve as Chair of the Facilities Committee in 2022, and I look forward to working together, towards further enhancements in 2023.

Finance Committee Report 2022
The purpose of the Finance Committee is to oversee financial planning and management for the School. In offering advice to the School Foundation Board on financial matters, the Committee makes recommendations including tuition fees, debentures and capital levy rates, staff salary levels, capital expenditure, information technology expenditure, operating expenditure (including professional development) and other sources of funding. The Committee liaises with external auditors to ensure that the School complies with Hong Kong reporting requirements and oversees the development and management of operating budgets.
Working with stakeholders to ensure sufficient investment is made to create a dynamic teaching and learning environment, the Committee is dedicated to attracting, retaining and rewarding the best talent from Australia and around the globe. The Committee continues to facilitate the growth and development of the School, while recognising financial constraints and a challenging financial environment.
The Committee benchmarks AISHK against other international schools in Hong Kong, in terms of a range of financial indicators. Working with the School Executive, the Board and other stakeholders continue to identify ways in which the School might operate more effectively and efficiently. In the absence of any external or government
financial support, there is an everpresent need for the Committee to balance considerations of affordability with the cost of providing a high-quality education.
The Board continued to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation in 2022 and the related impacts on AISHK families. Mindful of the current landscape and the uncertainty which remains, the Board acknowledged that the challenges presented by the pandemic are ongoing.
In line with this consideration, the Board communicated to AISHK parents in June to announce a 7.5% reduction on tuition fees charged in Term 3 of 2022. This reduction was reflected as a credit in the Term 3 parent fee account statement issued in August 2022.
The Committee is cognisant of the inflationary pressure experienced in 2022. with this in mind, the committee recommended a 2.5% increase in tuition fees for the 2023 school year. The increase mirrored the pay-rise awarded to staff in 2023.
These actions were taken in aim to maintain the financial health of the school, whilst also observing a commitment supporting the community during a challenging period. As Chair of the Finance Committee and on behalf of the Board, I trust that this balance has served us well and will continue to do so as we embark on the new school year in 2022.

Governance Committee Report 2022
The Governance Committee convenes regularly to observe its responsibilities, which include reviewing and renewing policies, making recommendations regarding processes of regulation, organisation and management to the full school Board and ensuring prudent and transparent leadership of the School.
In 2022, the Committee continued to collaboratively review a range of School policies in line with the regular review schedule. These included:
• Admissions Policy
• Workplace Discrimination Policy
• Retirement Guidelines
As COVID-19-related circumstances were ongoing, the Governance Committee, together with Head of School Mr Howard West and the School Executive, continued to navigate the changing landscape of impacts on AISHK and the education sector in Hong Kong. The committee also worked to support the board and the nominations committee by considering new approaches to board recruitment, including seeking applications of expressions of interest among the school community.
Thank you to Mr Ryan Neelam, Deputy Consul General who returned to Australia in late 2022. Your valuable guidance and contributions to the Committee have been greatly appreciated. We are pleased to welcome Alistair McEachern, Deputy Consul General who has joined the Committee in 2023.
I wish to thank all members of the Governance Committee for their commitment and hard work throughout the year.
I look forward to the coming school year, working with our new Head of School and continuing to collaborate towards our goals, with this dedicated team in 2023.

Development & Fundraising Committee Report 2022
Committee Chair: Committee Members:
The responsibilities of the Development and Fundraising Committee (DFC) include stakeholder engagement and fundraising initiatives. The committee benefits from the expertise and community connections of Board members and support from staff, parents and wider school community for fundraising success.
The DFC also collaborates with the AISHK Development Office in considering marketing and communications strategy and in its function of supporting the Parent Association (AISHK PA) to achieve community engagement. The DFC has continued to establish and action various new strategies and to further build on existing foundations for continued success.
Whilst early parts of 2022 presented persisting limitations to fundraising due to COVID-19, the eventual loosening of restrictions allowed for more face-to-face committee meetings, workshopping and community connections, which, in turn assisted towards fundraising initiatives.
The major fundraising focus, planning and discussion in 2022 was related to the AISHK Library refurbishment. In line with strategic direction, advice and design and tender estimates from the Head of School and fellow AISFL Board Committees, the DFC was in a position to draft, table and discuss the following items:
• Proposal for DFC Involvement in AISHK Library Refurbishment
• Fundraising Target & Structure
• Fundraising & PR Campaign: Strategy & Timeline
By the end of 2022, the DFC Committee agreed to support a total fundraising target of HK$ 5 million. The AISHK PA committed to a donation of HK$ 1 million towards this target. Therefore, the DFC’s remaining fundraising target is HK$ 4 million. The DFC and Board acknowledge this generous and significant contribution from the Parent Association towards this school enhancement project.
The DFC will continue to follow its proposed operational and strategic pathways to fundraising for this project, in consultation with advice from the relevant committees and advisors.

In community relations, the school held its annual Anzac Day Ceremony on the AISHK Field. Community guests including AISFL Board Governors Consular representatives and AISHK’s founding associations each laid a wreath at the AISHK Anzac Memorial. The DFC thanks the founding associations of AISHK and the Support Australia Group representatives present on the day. The AISFL Board and the School value the long-term connection, friendship and dedication shared between these important networks.
The Development Office presented its 2022 –mid-2033 marketing plan to the AISFL Board, including its plans for continued dedication towards enhanced digital and video content, global reach in advertising and leveraging alumni relations
and parent support as a foundation for increased storytelling, media relations and press opportunities.
I would like to thank the Development and Fundraising Committee for the work and commitment provided during 2022, and to the broader community of parents, staff and friends of AISHK in Hong Kong for their support.
I look forward to working with the Committee, Board and School further in 2023.
