primary school will be engaged in a number of interesting topics this term, ranging from ‘The History of Me’ biography project in Year 3, to ‘Children in World War Two’ work in Year 4. Year 5 will be learning all about the world’s water and Year 6 will be finding out about organs in the human body. So be prepared for some interesting questions from your children! he

Extra-curricular activities begin this month, with old favourites such as art club and chess being joined by some exciting new activities for your children to try. Activities such as: the fun and energetic Zumba dance class, the confidence-boosting drama club (for the budding actors among you) and finally a science club where you will have the chance to try intriguing experiments for yourself!

In continuation of last year’s success, your children will soon be receiving this term’s Baker Books Catalogue from which you and your family can choose to purchase books from their wide selection. Keep an eye out for it and be sure to

return your order forms and money by the deadline to avoid disappointment.

Some points to note for a successful year: • Please ensure your child arrives promptly at the new start time of 8.45 every morning.

This allows for registration and group time with the teacher before daily lessons begin.

• Please ensure children bring their reading folders to school every day – these are an essential means of communication between teachers and parents, so please remember to regularly check them for letters or homework tasks.

• If possible, encourage and help your child to practice their reading, spelling and multiplication skills at home, this will help them to progress well in all lessons.

The teachers at AIS are committed to providing a supportive and engaging learning environment to ensure that every child grows into a successful and confident learner, as well as a responsible member of our school community. We look forward to working with you to achieve this goal. ■

My name is Ms. Karen Brunt and I am the curriculum coordinator for the school. I consider it a privilege to be a member of the Atlantic International staff and community and am very much looking forward to sharing in an exciting and rewarding first year with you and your child/children.

This is an exciting time for staff and pupils alike as we launch into our first year in our brand new school.

We aim to fulfill our commitment to you as parents and our pupils by providing an education of the highest standard within the context and understanding of shared values e.g. care, consideration and cooperation, honesty, respect and openness. The school encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of these values through the experience it offers its pupils.

We believe it is important to promote inquiry and curiosity, enthusiasm and chal-

lenge, sharing and learning together. We want all of our children to feel welcomed, happy and fulfilled. We recognize that all children are different and that these differences create opportunities for adults and children alike to learn more about ourselves and each other. Helping children to develop good attitudes and values is an important feature of our work.

Day of Knowledge

A

fter having had a rest in the summer, both pupils, and teachers look forward one of the most joyful days in the calendar – the Day of Knowledge – a celebration of the beginning of a new academic year, a day promising new beginnings and successes.

Towards the end of the summer holidays each family conscientiously prepares for the coming year with the purchase of important school accessories such as; textbooks, writing equipment and school clothes.

But added to this list, on the eve of the 1st September, beautiful bunches of flowers are bought which greatly add to the colour and spirit of the Day of Knowledge and to the warm appreciation between teachers and pupils ready to start a new academic year together.

It greatly pleases us that on the 1st September our school met the pupils and their parents’ with cheerful school songs, celebratory slogans, greetings and congratulations.

On this day the traditions of the British and Russian schools were successfully combined; the ceremonial assembly of the Day of Knowledge of all schools in Russia and the traditional first assembly of schools in England,

the cheerful school call inviting all to lessons, and the strict Mary Poppins checking whether pupils are ready for lessons, the words of the school leaders and the welcoming speeches of visitors spoken in both Russian and English languages.

Such a combination of traditions hadn’t surprised either the children or their parents, as the school now moves into its third year. But a few may have become puzzled when they heard the name of classes with an English word for the year, put to a class number. Also, those who were going to become firstgraders may have been invited into a class in Year 3; seventhgraders into Year 9 and ninthgraders into Year 11. But the confusion did not continue for long, with the children becoming quickly accustomed to their

new groups and, having heard the cheerful school call, they happily went into their classes with their tutors and class teachers. This procession started with the first class – kindergarten group (year1, 2), then was followed by the pupils in Year 3, and behind them the rest of the school followed suit.

On this day all was celebratory; the lessons, meal times, and the excursion to Kolomenskoe park. In lessons pupils travelled through stations of knowledge, pleasing the teachers by displaying that they had forgotten very little over the summer, in fact many of the pupils showed that they had expanded their knowledge during the vacation. The children visited a number of different stations such as: ‘Knowledge’, ‘Mystery’, ‘History’, ‘Biology’,

‘Mathematics’, ‘Needlework’, ‘ICT’ and ‘Music’. The most success came from Years10 and 12 in the knowledge quizzes.

After a dinner, in Kolomenskoe Park the pupils chatted with each other, and with the class teachers, and had a wonderful time telling each other interesting stories about the spent vacation. These moments were fortunately captured by a photographic session.

The day very quickly came to an end and all the children returned to school to wait for their parents. The pupils were tired, but happy, as they went home, having been once again convinced that their school, ‘Atlantic International School’ had long prepared for this day and very much cared about them and their future education. ■

hree weeks of our adaptation period have alread passed. During this time our children have become very good friends, have got used to our daily routine and have begun to take an active part in our lessons. In our kindergarten, there are several reward systems: Every Friday, we present the certificate of «Star of the Week» (best student of the week). Here’s our first Stars.

О

тдохнув за лето, и учащиеся, и учителя с нетерпением ждут один из самых радостных праздников – День Знаний – праздник, начинающий новый учебный год, праздник, обещающий новые открытия и успехи. К празднику этому суетливо готовятся почти в каждой семье: приобретаются учебники и другие школьные принадлежности, выбирается школьная одежда и, наконец, накануне 1 сентября покупаются красивые букеты цветов, которые лучше всяких слов скажут, как ребята ждали встречу с любимыми учителями и как рады этой встрече.

Но чтобы праздник состоялся, мало цветов, нарядов

и праздничного настроения. Нужна еще хорошая программа. И готовится она теми, кто каждый год первого сентября встречает детей в школе, чтобы потом день за днем помогать им узнавать новое, постигать неизведанное, открывать мир знаний.

1 сентября наша школа встретила своих питомцев и их родителей веселыми школьными песнями, праздничными лозунгами, приветствиями и поздравлениями. В этот день удачно сочетались традиции британской и российской школы: торжественная линейка, какие в День Знаний проводятся во всех школах России, и ассамблея, которая традиционно проводится в школах Англии; веселый школьный звонок, приглашающий всех на уро-

ки, и строгая Мэри Поппинс, проверяющая, готовы ли учащиеся к урокам; слова ведущих и приветственные речи гостей, звучавшие на русском и английском языках… Такое сочетание традиций не удивило ни детей, ни их родителей: школа существует третий год и за это время было проведено немало праздников. Но немного растерялись и те, и другие, когда услышали название классов с английским словом year, приставляющимся к номеру класса. И тот, кто собирался стать первоклассником, был приглашен в класс year 3; а семиклассники оказались в year 9, девятиклассники – в year 11. Но замешательство продолжалось недолго, дети освоились и, услышав веселый школьный звонок, проследовали в классы за воспитате-

В этот день праздничным было все: и уроки, и обед, и экскурсия в парк Коломенское. На уроках учащиеся путешествовали по станциям знаний, с удовольствием показывая учителям, что за лето они не только ничего не забыли, но и узнали что –то новое, вызывая у учителей радостное удивление и улыбки. Ребята побывали на станциях: «Грамотеево», «Загадочная», «Историческая», «Биологическая», «Математическая», «Умелые ручки», «Компьютерная» и «Музыкальная». Самыми знающими на станциях оказались year10, и year 12. Неумех и незнаек среди наших детей не было. После обеда, в парке Коломенское, школьники общались друг с другом и со своими классными руководителями, молодыми, интересными и увлеченными, играли, удивляли друг друга интересными рассказами о проведенных каникулах, фотографировались… Очень быстро подошел к концу праздничный день. В школе всех ребят ждали родители, и после ужина, уставшие, но счастливые, они возвращались домой, еще раз убедившись в том, что в школе «Атлантик» их ждали, долго готовились к встрече и очень любят их. ■

и прошло 3 недельки нашего адаптационного периода. За это время наши дети очень сдружились и привыкли к нашему распорядку дня, и стали принимать активное участие на уроках. В нашем Детском Садике есть несколько систем поощрения. Каждую пятницу мы вручаем сертификат «Звезда недели» (лучшему ученику недели). Вот наши первые звездочки. от

T

he reception class had a great beginning to the new school year. We have had fun exploring our new classroom and making new friends. We have begun to learn our phonics through the Jolly Phonics programme. We have learnt the sounds for the letters s, a, t and i. Each sound has an action and a song that helps us to remember it. We are practising how to hold a pencil correctly, while we learn how to write some letters.

We have fun counting through a range of activities, including counting songs and counting how many children are at school. We have been learning to speak in English everyday, we have been practising how to talk about what we like and can do. It has been a great start and we look forward to learning more as the year goes on.

Nadia explained to both the students and teachers different ways in which children live around the world. Our class was very interested in the presentation, especially when the older children performed a song in which they said, “Hello” in many languages.

Nursery A is a very active class and we are enjoying all of our activities so far. The adaptation period is now over, and we are quickly falling into our classroom routine. We are currently learning about ourselves, our lives, the environments around us; and the children are very curious about what will happen next!

Мы мисс Надя и мисс Эми из Nursery A! Мы c нетерпением ждем новых уроков и развлечений в этом году. Надеемся, что в нашей группе они пройдут весело и увлекательно. Год уже начался с потрясающего праздника - дня знаний. Дети смогли встретиться со всеми своими учителями и принять участие в различных заданиях, которые послужили небольшим введением в то, чем они будут заниматься целый год. Дети так же побывали на первой ассамблее в этом году, которую проводила Мисс Надя. Детки узнали, как живут их сверстники во всем мире. Мы с увлечением участвовали в предложенных заданиях и внимательно слушали, как старшие дети представили песню, в которой слово «привет» прозвучало на многих языках мира. Nursery A очень активная группа и нам нравится всё, что мы делаем. Первичный адаптационный период уже прошел, и мы быстро втягиваемся в ежедневную работу. Сейчас мы изучаем себя, нашу жизнь и окружающий нас мир, и детям очень любопытно, что же будет дальше!

re-nursery had a great time making “Funny Food Faces”. They learnt about different parts of the face and names of vegetables. Vanya especially liked the, “Cucumber Eyes” (look at his photo!) whilst Artur preferred to eat the whole face!! All in all it was a very amusing activity!

his week our group Nursery

T

first month of Year One has had a great start.

Students are having lots of fun learning all about the letters and sounds through poems and songs. Students are also learning their numbers 1 to 20.

They are learning to recognise number words and to put numbers in order both forwards and backwards. Students have also been learning about different parts of the body and the five senses. So far we have learned about our arms, hands, legs, feet, mouth and ears. When students learnt about their mouths we talked about how we use our tongues to taste new and yummy flavours. Students learned about salty, sweet and sour flavours through tasting a chip, chocolate, and lemon.

They had a lot of fun with this activity. Above are pictures from when students tasted a sour lemon. Year One students enjoy new experiences in learning everyday! he

B was introduced to shapes.

We saw how these shapes are similar to some of our favorite fruits and vegetables; apples are like circles, and cucumbers are like ovals. We painted fruits; like apples, oranges and grapes, with smiles to hang in our cloakroom.

We also prepared a delicious looking salad of tomatoes and cucumbers out of play-doh. Our harvest looked tasty and healthy!

Ребята с огромным удовольствием изучают новые звуки и буквы через песенки и стихи. Мы также изучаем цифры от 1 до 20. Сейчас ученики учатся узнавать слова обозначающие цифры, расставлять их в прямом и обратном порядке. На уроках естествознания ученики узнали много нового о частях тела человека и пяти органах чувств. Мы выучили, для чего человеку нужны руки и ладони, ноги и ступ-

ни, рот и уши. Рассматривая рот, мы говорили о том, как важен язык для дегустации новой и вкусной еды. Ребята с закрытыми глазами пробовали чипсы, шоколад и лимон и определяли на вкус соленое, кислое и сладкое. Они активно участвовали в этом процессе и получили от него огромное удовольствие. Мы сделали несколько снимков во время того, как ученики дегустировали лимон. Дети в группе Year 1 воспринимают все новое с большим энтузиазмом, обучаясь каждый новый день! // Year TWO Welcome to a new school

year. It is lovely to see the children looking so well and ready to take on the challenges of a new academic year the children have settled in well already and I am looking forward to getting to know them all better.

This month we have been looking at recapping on phonics sounds. The children have been encouraged to think of items that start with the phonics sounds. In Maths we have been counting up to 100 and we are now much more confident and can recite numbers in both English and Russian. We have been learning about ourselves and have sang a range of body songs e.g. “If you happy and you’re know it”, and “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”. As part of learning about ourselves we have been looking at our senses. We have tasted both sweet and salty items and we are able to distinguish between them.

Мы лепили из пластилина овощи и фрукты, вырезали их из бумаги и делали фруктовый салат. Наш урожай был вкусным и полезным! а
