Week 08 Reflection
from The Development and Use of Low Embodied Energy Materials in a Carbon Conscious Construction Sector
The process of researching and producing a mycelium composite brick this week was extremely interesting. I think that exploring innovations like these highlights how reliant we are on the familiarity of conventional building methods and forms of representation.
I was struck by the ease of the process of making the brick and how quickly each mold could be finished and left to incubate.

It is easy to see how the process could be rolled out on a much larger scale and how it could work quickly and efficiently whilst using minimal energy.
Unfortunately, as I am making this at home I don't have adequate incubation facilities to keep the bricks at 27 degrees, this means that they are progressing much more slowly than the five day target. I hope that following the development of these bricks I might be able to find conditions more suited to their
growth in order to further experiment with this material in the coming semester. During my tutorial at the end of week eight it was advised that I develop some way to graphically represent the potential of each of the materials and building methods I have been researching so they could be easily compared and understood. I needed to, at this stage 'evaluate their appropriateness' in different scenarios. I decided that I would
tackle this question in the following week in order to make my research as clear and comprehensible as possible.
