Questions and Answers Interview with Marlene Loney, Art Market Promoter
Q: What does Art Market offer that is unique in Calgary? A: Art Market is the meeting point between skilled artists and discerning consumers. Our lineup of artists has been carefully selected for ingenuity and quality in their craft, and we present a vast variety of mediums, so you really can plan to do all your Christmas shopping in one weekend. We provide a convenient way to shop ethically and locally with 100% Canadian craftspeople, whom you will actually meet on the show floor!
Q: What sort of people are the Art Market artists? A: First and foremost they are passionate creators. Many of them have spent a lifetime developing their craft and the work they are offering sometimes has 20, 30, even 40 years of refinement behind it. They are also micro-business owners, some of them simply in order to maintain their artist’s lifestyle, while others are quite solid-though-tiny Canadian businesses. It’s quite something to take home a piece of pottery that is part of someone’s life story, and also enables that artists to continue adding beauty to the world.
Q: What’s so special about a handmade gift? A: A handmade gift is one literally unlike any other. It’s an expression of the giver’s thought and taste, and so makes an eloquent statement to the receiver. The exact weave and shade of a shawl can say ‘’I care’’ and an inlaid maple and ebony pen can say ‘’I believe in you’’. The highly personal implications simply can’t be replicated in a mass-produced gift. Such a handmade item becomes a treasure and eventually an heirloom.
Q: Do you think Calgarians appreciate the difference? A: Absolutely! Part of the reason we are able to hand-pick our artists is that Art Market has been a strong show for them for 25 years. Calgarians were choosing to bring artistry and craftsmanship into their homes long before ‘’buy local, support local’’ became trendy. Now of course there’s a much M i x eofdhow C rartists e a tenrich i o nour s communities D e c e m b and e r lives, 2 0 1which 3 Ed t i o n to see. Pretzel Christmas Trees By Katie from Sweet Rose Studios
Ingredients: Pretzel Rods green candy melts sandwich bag scissors waxed paper
Directions:
mini M&M’s
1. Lay out a generous sheet of waxed paper out and place the pretzel rods about 6 inches apart from each other. 2. Melt half a bag of the candy melts in the sandwich bag according to the direction. When the melts have reached a liquid form, snip a super tiny piece of one of the corners off the bag. 3. Squeeze the candy melt out of the bag starting from the top of the pretzel rod, gradually creating a tree shape. 4. Sprinkle your choice of toppings on the candy melt to create the look of ornaments. This is a great step for the kids to do! 5. Let the candy melt cool completely before serving. I let mine cool over night to make sure they had set appropriately.
