Artist: James Bressendorff Title: Sam I Am Software Used: Adobe Photoshop About the Image: “ Sam I am is a homage to two very distinct and never intersecting loves..Samuel L. Jackson and Zombies. It was a school project meant to enhance our Photoshop skills and have a fun time doing it.”

What we like: We like the liberal use of blood, gore, and skeletal details. We also like the photo choice as it evokes everthing that Samuel L. Jackson is as an actor. What we didn’t like: Really, he’s our editor n’ chief after all.

Graphic News Oscars shortlist for VFX blockbusters announced Dec 10, 2013 Article Courtesy of 3D World
T
he awards race is officially on as VFX innovators gather to explain what was involved in bringing the Oscar contenders to life. The combination of ever-advancing technology and brilliantly creative minds means there's not much VFX artists can't do these days. Each year, visual effects in cinema get better, with the best, quite rightly, celebrated at the annual Oscars ceremony. But with so many films to choose from, a shortlist must be made - cue the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual VFX Bake-Off. The yearly event, hosted in Jan 2014, will see 10 films and their VFX supervising teams go head-to-head to be shortlisted for Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects. Recently announced, the movies to be showcased are Elysium, Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, Oblivion, Star Trek Into Darkness, Thor: The Dark World, Pacific Rim and World War Z. There are a few surprises in there, with notable VFX films such as Man of Steel and Ender's Game not making the cut. And the inclusion of Disney's summer flop The Lone Ranger may raise a few eyebrows. But this is not about a film's popularity, it's about the blood, sweat and tears that went into creating the entire new world's, amazing creatures and impossible shots that, regardless of the narrative, made us sit back and go 'wow!'.

uslan Khasanov took over 1,000 shots of the digits seen in his dark, typography-based feature opener for Wired’s September issue. The magazine gave the Russian designer a relatively open brief, specifying only that the issue date, 09 13, should be difficult to read, and highlighting his Liquid Type project as reference. Dissatisfied with experiments using ink on wet paper, Khasanov hit on the final look after washing his brush 005 | Pixol n’ Poly |

and drawing letters on a wet sink surface. “The letters came to life - fine lines instantly flowed, overgrown with patterns like coral, and then disappeared,” he recalls. “The project looks good in static, but in motion - in the tablet version - it reached its full potential.” Editor’s note: This article originally appeared in Computer Arts issue 220.

Q and A with THE EDITOR PnP’s editor-in-chief tackles Pro-Choice in a graphic style
Artist: James Bressendorff Title: We the People About the Image: “ This project was my choice for a portfilio assignment for Philosophy and Ethics class. Each student could choose any topic discussed in the class so I choose something I believe in dearly. When looking at the piece I wanted to convey my meaning without specificially mentioning Pro-Choice.” 006 | Pixol n’ Poly |

Q: Why did you do the piece on such a controversial topic? A: “I wanted to do something that I felt passionate about, something that I could really internalize to create a vivid design with a powerful visual message. It wasn’t something I wanted to leave a lot of room for interpretation, but I wanted people to look at it and ask themselves what they really believe” Q: Why “We the people” for the title? A: “I felt the title was appropriate given the debate over abortion. Everyone in America has the right to express themselves, to make choices that whether right or wrong are theirs to make. Once the people give up that right it’s a slippery slope to an autocracy.” Q: How long did this piece take you? A: “From start to finish the piece took about three hours. Most of the time was spent choosing the right composition, lighting, and font.” Q: What was the hardest part of the piece? A: “I think finally deciding to do this topic was perhaps the hardest part. It’s really personal and I’m a kind of private person regarding my opinions. For me allowing people to know my views was very difficult given the subject matter. Q: What was your inspiration? A: “My friends and family who understood my views and encouraged me to express myself” Q: If your child told you she was pregnant what would you do? A: “After taking a few moments of composure I’d ask her what would she want to do? I’d give her all her options have her talk to people who can help her.” Q: Why are you pro choice? A: “I’ve always felt that your body is a gift that only you can take care of. No one has the right to tell you what to do with it.” Q: What’s next for you? A: “Only time will tell. I’ll continue to work hard in school and grow my skills but even that’s second to me having fun. There’s no use doing something if you’re not going to have fun at it.” Q: Would you have done anything different? A: “I would have spent a little more time on blending the constitution and the woman’s figure. It’s good but not exactly perfect.” Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add? A: “As an artist, when you find the rare occasion to put your heart into a piece the results can be breathtaking. Art should not be encumbered by politics, but should express the artist’s heart. “
