HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT

INNOVATIONS FOR A HIGHER QUALITY OF LIFE

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is a strong partner for innovation in the fields of health and environment. Our experts develop new findings and implement them in innovative technologies and solutions. The Health & Environment Department provides scientific support to national and international research partners from industry and public institutions, enabling them to

Our health and quality of life depends on three key factors:

RESEARCH AREAS:

ä (QYLURQPHQW ä /LIHVW\OH DQG QXWULWLRQ ä +HDOWK DQG SUHGLVSRVLWLRQ The Health & Environment Department uses its expertise in these three sectors to develop technologies and solutions that are designed to improve health and quality of life for everyone. We combine modelling and simulation, sensor and ‘omics’ technologies as well as system integration with longstanding regulatory know-how to create innovative solutions for our customers and partners in specific research fields.

Some examples from our research portfolio:

SMART ASSISTANCE AT HOME:

CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH:

The smart Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies developed by AIT experts enhance comfort and safety at home. Sophisticated IT systems pave the way to an active and healthy life for older people.

AIT develops new diagnostic procedures, therapeutic concepts and certified software solutions for clinical research and medical treatment of patients with high blood pressure.

SALIVA DIAGNOSTICS:

WATER MANAGEMENT:

Saliva diagnosis offers major advantages over traditional blood or tissue-based approaches and can be used for the diagnosis of a wide range of diseases. The collection of saliva samples is absolutely painless and non-invasive. The use of saliva as a diagnostic medium will increase specifically in screenings for chronic and age-related diseases, point-of-care tests at the doctor’s office, and in therapy monitoring of patients with chronic diseases.

The secure and safe supply of drinking and process water requires responsible and sustainable use of our water resources. AIT experts apply an integrated management approach and state-of-the-art scientific and technological methods for qualitative and quantitative monitoring to avoid potential overuse and to minimise anthropogenic impact on surface and groundwater bodies.

PLANT GROWTH:

SUSTAINABLE SOIL REMEDIATION:

AIT scientists investigate beneficial microorganisms in plants (endophytes) using cutting-edge analysis methods. This knowledge allows them to use endophytes in a targeted manner to promote plant growth and to combat pathogens.

Innovative biological or chemical in-situ remediation processes are not only eco-friendly but also considerably more cost-effective than conventional methods in the medium and long term. The latest developments in this area include isotope methods for monitoring purposes or the use of iron particles to break down chlorinated hydrocarbons.
