ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE: A GALLERY AT 798 Internship: Research & Concept 706 North 3rd Street, 798 Art Zone, Beijing 2016 Winter The project turns a factory building into a contemporary gallery in the internationally famous art district 798 Art Zone. The original factory building was 50’x 100’with an auxiliary building that was used as offices. The design aims to create a spatial experience that fits into the atmosphere of contemporary art and to turn the office building into an actual living space. By inserting two boxes into the existing factory structure, we created two different shapes of galleries, which are flexible to artworks of different dimensions, meanwhile, make the viewing sequence more vivid.
1. The existing structure was a void factory building approximately 50’ x 100’ with an auxiliary office building. Option 1

PICTURESQUE HOME: A PRIVATE VILLA Internship: Research & Drawings Yiwu, Zhejiang 2017 Summer Yiwu is one of the most developed towns in south China. Businessmen from this town like to build their own villas to demonstrate their fortune and lifestyle. This project is one of this kind of villas. The design makes two connected villas into a single one and then add more footage by constructing a new auxiliary structure to meet the needs of the owners’ luxurious lifestyle.

We focused our project based on “chi”,a concept about balancing a person’s life force through nature. By doing so, we set up our project to benefit human health through the power of nature physically, mentally and spiritually.

1/2 LIFE: FENDER GUITAR FLAGSHIP STORE Design Studio II - Retail 421 S 3rd Street, Phoenix, Arizona 2017 Fall The specific context for the design project is the historic Gerardo’s Building on 3rd street at downtown Phoenix. The design problem is a retail flagship store for Fender, a manufacturer of stringed instruments and amplifiers. Till present, they have sold their guitars through music stores but the retail market has dramatically changed just in the past 8 years through online shopping. This change has challenged manufacturers such as Fender to explore how to make the retail experience the instrument and the world that it represents. The flagship store will become a place of outreach, discover and influence.

The use of this building is changed through different time periods. The daytime atmosphere is dominated by quietness, and the building is mainly used to sell guitars and to learn about Fender guitar-related history. The atmosphere of the evening is mainly lively, and the building is mainly used for opening the bar. There are a music performance and a guitar experience hall in the building allowing customers to better experience the role of Fender guitar. — 21 —
