MY VIEW: PROVIDING MENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANCE TO CHILDREN The refugee experience is a harrowing and difficult one for the many individuals that go through it. While the physical toll is visible, the mental struggles faced by moving from one’s home to a foreign land can be hard to describe.
W
hile refugee organisations work hard to ensure that the families and individuals are resettled, they also have to address the mental health issues that present themselves in adults and children. For the Refugee Council, one of the foremost refugee organisations in the UK, helping children and young people deal with the traumatic experiences of what they’ve gone through is paramount. Many of these young people have witnessed and been victims of inexplicable events that leave them grappling with feelings of loss, guilt and separation. For this reason, the organisation introduced a specialist mental health service called My View.
My View approaches children knowing that they have faced traumas and that their responses, while distressing, are normal.

According to the organisation, even though some of the children may be young, they show incredible resilience to cope and work through their experiences. Through My View, the organisation aims to help these young people harness their inner strength to overcome the past.
