2 Reducing Stigma A large part of the work of the NSPA goes towards reducing stigma surrounding suicide and the mental health issues and emotional distress that can lead to a person taking their own life. The NSPA strives to make talking about suicide and mental health as normal as talking about physical ailments. People experiencing emotional distress are encouraged to talk about their issues and seek help before things reach that stage.
1 Suicide Prevention The need for the NSPA was identified following the Call to Action for Suicide Prevention in England campaign in 2012. Each year there are more than 6,000 suicides in the UK, resulting from a complex and wide-ranging combination of factors and issues. The Department of Health of the UK government is a member of the NSPA, and the organisation works to complement the Preventing Suicide strategy of the government.
Samaritans works in tandem with the NSPA to provide emotional support for people experiencing distress or mental health issues and for people contemplating suicide.
