Ben Tyers - Editor Ben Tyers was born in Portsmouth, Southern England, some years ago. Ben was offered, and accepted, a college course in Computer Studies when he was thirteen -several years ahead of his peers. Ben spent twenty years in a variety professions before settling down teaching English. He considers himself quick to acquire new skills, logical and able to use his own initiative. He enjoys working as part of team, likes working under pressure and strives to constantly improve himself. Outside work he likes playing pool, designing websites, swimming and socialising with friends. Cassandra Gulam - Writer Cassandra Gulam was born in Anchorage, Alaska. After a rough childhood dodging bears and blizzards, she completed most of her secondary and post-secondary education in North Idaho, where the greatest hazard one can encounter is a need to travel to the southern part of the state (also known as “North Utah”). After completion of a Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Idaho, and a Master of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures (Spanish) at Washington State University, she found that her early survival skills were becoming dull, and decided to seek new adventures in Mexico. In the bravest act of her life, she accepted a position working with some of the most bloodthirsty creatures known to man – junior high students. For six years she wrangled adolescents at the American School of Puebla, under the clever guise of a Social Studies Teacher. She was also assistant coordinator for the ASP’s IB Middle Years Programme, as well as advisor to the Model UN Club. But when the siren call of the Northwest’s forests and mountains became too compelling to resist, she returned to her roots, and is now a Spanish Instructor at Washington State University-Vancouver, where her skills in igloo-making, lassoing, and playing dead have been important career assets.
Rafael Domingos - Illustrator Born and raised in the middle of a rainy night in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Rafael’s parents divorced when he was 5, introvert when a child, he loved to draw and make comic strips of his favourites characters, over the years he became less shy and more amusing, but never stopped drawing. At the age of 17 he started work for a company to help his mother with bills, he did well in his job and could pay to study what he really loved: Arts. After a few years decided to leave everything behind and start a new career, as freelancer artist. It was difficult at the beginning, but some time later, with hard work, he gained some good and reliable clients, he started to work for a company creating many kinds of content for kids: illustrations, games, animations and books; but left to work exclusively as freelancer artist. He usually works on books and games, but also designs comics, CD covers, t-shirts, stamps and many other materials.

Hi, Adrian, Today I visited the beach by myself. I just stayed on the sand, but there was a lot to see. I put my lounge chair under a palm tree and spent the whole day just watching people. There was a woman in front of me who was sunbathing on her towel. She was out in the sun for several hours and got the worst sunburn, even though there was an umbrella next to her. I missed you the most when I had to put on suntan lotion by myself. Out in the water, there was a woman bodyboarding, which looks easier to do than surfing. If I were going to try it, though, I wouldn’t wear my bikini; I would definitely wear a one-piece. There was a young boy diving off the dock and then swimming back to the beach again. I noticed the lifeguard keeping a close eye on him. His brother was near me, making quite a large sandcastle. A nice young man offered to buy me an ice cream and I said yes because I was so hot. I hope when you come to visit me, we can go to the beach together and maybe you’ll buy me a treat! Love, Carolina

Dear Jane, Last Saturday my host family, the Jones’, took me to the local park. It was a nice hot day and the sun was shining. The park was busy, but very large. Their daughter, Clair, played on a swing and climbing frame. I played football, but didn’t play basketball. I relaxed on a bench and had a delicious ice-cream. There was a big fountain in the middle of park. In the park there were two old people playing chess, a young boy climbing a tree and a couple playing Frisbee. Etc.

Are you looking for the perfect spot for your family vacation? Look no further than Paradise Campgrounds! Our well-equipped campsites include your own personal cabin, room to set up your tents, and a campfire pit/circle. If you enjoy chopping wood, each campsite has a stump and an axe for that purpose. The littlest campers will enjoy picking berries (we have many wild raspberry bushes), while the older kids help with setting up camp. To work up an appetite, there are several well-marked trails to take you through the woods. Be sure to bring along sunscreen and insect repellent in your rucksack. Enjoy the happy sounds of Paradise Creek – the water is shallow, so feel free to get your feet wet. Imagine, after a day of hiking and playing games, lighting a fire for the evening, cooking steaks on the grill, and telling stories. There is plenty of wood for chopping, but be sure to bring your own matches to light your fire. For incredible memories you and your family will treasure for years – come camping in Paradise!

Professor Jameson, Can you believe I am actually in England? Yesterday I thought of you (my favourite art teacher) because we visited a museum, a really large one with many collections of art from different periods, and so many galleries that I almost got lost! One exhibit that I enjoyed very much was of some large pottery artefacts – it reminded me of a project we did in your class. There was a prehistoric spear inside a display case – I couldn’t believe how old it was! I was looking at a fossil display that surprised me by its age, as well. I also saw a bit of dramatic performance art that I thought was quite interesting. I remembered what you always told us, and tried to just relax and enjoy the art instead of analysing it all the time. I was admiring a lovely painting when I saw a group go by, so I started listening to their guide – it was fascinating. I also sat contemplating an enormous sculpture for a long while. You can tell that people really love this museum, because I saw many of them making a donation into the box. I made a donation, too – for me, and also for you! I hope you are well, Elena

I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that I went to a ski resort this weekend, which was a new experience for me. The bad news is that I got hurt. Here’s what happened. We drove up the mountain and parked the car. Then we went to the rental booth. I got skis (mine weren’t so long, because I’m a beginner), and my friend Jared got a snowboard. We both rented helmets, to be safe. And yes, I was wearing a thick coat and a scarf to stay warm. We got on the ski lift (it’s difficult to sit on the chair without falling!), and went to the top of a slope. We were heading down the slope when all of a sudden I saw a ski jump appear in front of me – other skiers were easily flying into the air, but I was scared. I tried to avoid it, but I fell. I lost a ski, and I hurt my ankle. Jared went to the First Aid station and someone came to help. It was very hard to get my ski boot off, and when we did, we saw my ankle was very swollen. They took me back down to the lodge, where I spent the rest of the day resting and drinking hot chocolate and watching Jared finishing his runs in style. Don’t worry, I’ll be okay in a week or two. Love, Miguel

Dear Diary, Sometimes I swear I HATE my little brother. Mum made me and Alex take him with us to the amusement park and because of him it was a huge mess. First we went on the Big Wheel, and the three of us barely fit into the seat. Then we decided to try the roller coaster (we were waiting in the queue for an hour!) but of course little Timmy started feeling dizzy and almost threw up on Alex. I was so embarrassed. From there we decided only to let Timmy on the kiddy rides, which was boring for us; there was a clown who did his best to make us laugh, but it really was for children. So, we sat Timmy down to watch the Old Tyme Theatre show while Alex was testing his strength – he rang the bell and won a prize! When we turned around, Timmy wasn’t there! We were asking for information at the booth when I heard Timmy screaming. We finally found him by the water park. Of course, when we got home, Mum blamed ME for Timmy getting lost. It’s not my fault Mum made me take him! And it ruined my date with Alex!! Love always, Janie

The group of friends was excited about spending the night in a haunted house. Sam, James, Tom, David, and the only girl in the group, Jessica, didn’t know what was waiting for them. First, they heard a strange noise in another room. It was a mad scientist, who was bringing Frankenstein to life. They decided to leave, but there were other creatures coming after them. A ghost started scaring Jessica, so she ran out the front door, where a man with a chainsaw was waiting for her. When David came face to face with a man with a huge knife in his hand, he began letting out a loud scream. Upstairs, a furry werewolf was chasing Tom towards the staircase. Poor Sam was so scared, with a headless horseman coming from one direction and Dracula coming from the other, he couldn’t even think of running away. And James stayed hiding upstairs, watching as the creatures terrorized his friends. Luckily, it was all a big joke – but it was a scary joke, too.

Russell Andersen Regional Manager Frampton Cinemas Mike Buxton Branch Manager Maple Boulevard Mr. Buxton, I am writing to inform you that a recent visit to your theatre revealed some major problems that we need you to address immediately. The first problem is the signs around the box office – they are very small, and people in the queue can’t see the show times. You need to check your printer, as the ticket was hard to read. Our visitor noticed that the cut-out for the new animated movie was far away from the sweet counter, which is where children would be more likely to see it. We also found that the placement of your popcorn stand is not very efficient, as it gets in the way. In fact, buying snacks in your theatre is very inconvenient because there are three different places at which to buy them. A young couple who was holding hands commented that they wished everything was in one place. We also spoke with a young man who was choosing a sweet and he said he didn’t like to have to wait in the queue over and over – so he didn’t buy as many snacks. We do want to compliment you on the variety of posters you have up, as they help customers who are deciding what film to see, either that day or for a future visit. We also thought that the usher who was collecting the tickets was very professional and courteous. However, we do require that you make immediate changes so that we can increase business at your location. Please contact my office if you require guidance or funding. Best regards, Russell Andersen

EDITORIAL: TIME FOR FIFA TO MODERNIZE The incredible events of recent football matches, both at the World Cup and other major tourneys, have created anger and disappointment in many fans. When a goalkeeper can move off the line before a penalty shot is taken, when obvious flopping is rewarded with a foul, when a linesman doesn’t accurately raise his flag to call offsides … these referee errors can take alreadyexcited crowds and cause them to become violent. The problem of these errors is that they are all extremely visible on instant replay, to the viewers at home, the fans in the stadium – even the players on the pitch. Players running to the referee to protest getting a card is nothing new – but now they have video evidence. It is time for FIFA to create a system similar to the one used in American football, where managers can challenge certain types of calls. This would encourage referees to apply the rules with more care and consistency – and help fans and teams to know that the number of goals shown on the scoreboard at the end of the match reflects the real events of the contest.

Dear Diary, I think the surprise birthday party I threw for Craig today was a big success. His parents let me organize everything. We had a great big arch with lots of balloons and streamers, and a banner that said “happy birthday.” Besides the birthday cake, I tried to make sure there were lots of refreshments so people wouldn’t get hungry. The punch bowl looked so pretty with the ice and the fruit drink I prepared, and there were also a few bottles of soda. Most of the adults sat at one table watching us all have fun. Since Craig’s little brother, Chris, and his friends are such brats, I tried to keep them busy, too. There was area for playing Twister (though some of them don’t know their right from their left), and another area for getting faces painted – though it was mostly only girls that did that. A lot of the kids had fun jumping on the trampoline, though of course Chris did fall off and started crying to his mum and dad. And of course he had to be crying while Craig was blowing out the candles. But it doesn’t matter; our friend Gordon was in charge of taking pictures and he managed to get some pretty good photos. I think Craig looked so cute wearing his little party hat! So, except for Chris’s tantrum, I would say the party was a success. Craig loved all the presents everyone got for him (he said he liked mine the best), and everyone had fun. I’m really happy. Love, Sally

THE HONORABLE GREAT CHANCELLOR XERGONDOFLT THE HUMBLE ADVISOR ZEBALK EARTHLINGS
Honourable Great Sir, I have returned from a long visit to Earth, and I am reporting on these creatures’ daily activities. Their residential streets have many unusual features. First is the way that children return home from their educational activities. They are not instantly teleported, but instead take the school bus. As they are getting off this vehicle, they are met by their parents or find their own way to their homes. I also observed that adults who were getting home would store their vehicles (often known as cars) in garages, if possible. I did see some parked cars on the street. Apparently these creatures are sensitive to precipitation and temperature. In addition, their vehicles do not fly. The streets are made of paving slabs, a hard and rather unattractive material. They also like to share their space with other living creatures, such as plants – but do not allow them to grow wild. For example, I saw one woman trimming bushes. I do not think the rosebushes on our planet would tolerate such treatment. Also, when they wish to send objects to each other, they have to use a person known as a postman, who may even make a “special delivery” for certain packages, which the recipient must “sign for” – how inefficient, do you not agree, Honourable Great Sir? In addition, they use animals for pets, and not for food. How curious. In addition, these creatures separate themselves from their next-door neighbours either by use of a fence or a wall, instead of a force field. It is primitive, to say the least. I hereby recommend we ignore the Earthlings, as they have nothing to offer an advanced society such as ours. Respectfully, Your humble servant, Zebalk

Kids, Your father and I are trusting you to take care of the house while we are gone. Please pay attention to the following rules and instructions. You may eat your dinners in front of the TV in the living room. But Beth, as the oldest, we are trusting you to get Anna and Kyle to do their homework at the big table in the dining room. If you need to use the computer, you may go into the study, but do not touch any of our papers. No fighting over the internet. The three of you should take turns cleaning the kitchen after dinner. Do not wait to wash all the dishes till the night before we come home. Beth, you can have a friend over if you want – but no disappearing downstairs into the basement or upstairs into the loft. We need you to be in the main house so you can keep an eye on Anna and Kyle at all times. Thank you so much for helping us with that. If you need to go into the garage to get balls or your bicycles, that’s fine. Do not even think about touching the car. Before you go to bed, Beth, we’ll need you to double-check that both the front door and the back door are locked, as well as all the windows. Beth, as a special privilege you can sleep in our bedroom instead of sharing with Anna. But don’t watch TV all night – and do leave the door open so you can hear your brother and sister. Last thing, kids – no playing out on the balcony. We know it’s fun to drop water balloons but wait till we get home, okay? We love you and trust you will all be safe and smart, and listen to Beth. Love, Mum & Dad

From the desk of Ingrid Norton, Interior Designer Proposal prepared for: Mr. & Mrs. Harold Ranklin Dear Harold and Janet, Based on the consultation we held at your home last week, and a careful consideration of your budget, I would like to propose the following modifications to your living room. Since you described it as a space where your family spends a great deal of time, whether playing a board game (I noticed your children playing Monopoly when we were there), or looking at photo albums (so nice to still have these in our digital world, isn’t it?), I wanted to make sure the entire space was welcoming and comfortable. You currently have two sofas, which I feel should stay, though they could be freshened up with new upholstery. I know your children and their friends enjoy just laying on the sofa while watching TV. However, I think we might be able to increase seating by exchanging the armchair for a loveseat. The placement of your coffee table in the middle of the room isn’t ideal, however; I propose getting a larger, rectangular one to replace it, which will give you more space for magazines and the remote control. I’m also recommending that you add two end tables at the outer ends of the sofas. I have just the matching set in mind! Your fireplace is quite old-fashioned. I would suggest opening up the room by replacing it with a gas fireplace; this will give you much more space and eliminate the need for firewood. I’d suggest that we move the vase from the end table to the mantelpiece above the fireplace to reduce the chances of it getting broken. Finally, I want to suggest that we mount both the TV set and the DVD player on the wall. This will give us a wonderful space for storage underneath. I also think that you should replace your curtains with blinds – this will make the room feel bigger and also make it easier to block out light when you watch movies. I hope my proposal is to your liking. I have many additional ideas on how to make this space work for you and your family. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this further. Regards, Ingrid

Lessons in Etiquette, by Betty Bidet Lesson 6 – Dinner Service . . . choosing and decorating your space is one of the most important elements of throwing a dinner party. It is to be hoped that you have an elegant dining room, with French double doors. If all you have are sliding doors, keep them closed and covered with a curtain. Do not be afraid to open your sideboard and use the fine china you received at your wedding. That’s what it’s for, after all. Set your table with a lovely tablecloth, and be sure to use cloth napkins and placemats (optional). Make sure each person has the utensils they’ll need – at least two forks, and a steak knife if you are serving meat. Light a few candles to make the table beautiful. Serve colourful punch or other beverages in a glass or crystal pitcher. If you are serving turkey or ham, be sure to use a silver platter. You’ll want to find your carving knife well before dinner starts so you’re not looking for it at the last minute with hungry guests waiting. Before beginning, many guests will appreciate saying Grace. You may do this standing, before pulling out a chair to sit down. Carving the turkey or chicken is an art which you do not want to practice in front of guests. You may want to slice the turkey in the kitchen, instead. Remember – giving yourself plenty of time to prepare is the best way to ensure that both you and your guests will have a wonderful meal – and a memorable time.

Sarah, I’d like you to focus on the kitchen today, please. The icebox needs cleaning out – we have some old frozen meat that has certainly gone bad. If you could also clean the hob with a scrub, that would be great – my spaghetti sauce boiled over two nights ago. I’d also like to see the biscuit jar get a deep cleaning – we ate the last one yesterday - as well as the fruit bowl – I think it may be getting mouldy. Why don’t you put them in with the other dishes when you’re loading the dishwasher? Please put away the dishes that are in the drying rack – some of those bowls go up on the high shelves in the cabinets. Be very, very careful when getting things down - stand on a step-stool to be safe. I’d also really appreciate it if you wouldn’t mind chopping the vegetables I left on the breakfast bar – that will make it easier for me to make dinner when I get home. You should find your payment here on this table. Leave me a note if anything comes up. Thanks, Janet

CLUB NGA – NO GIRLS ALLOWED Plan of Attack for Monday My reconnaissance mission has revealed that the bathroom will be the best place for the next attack on Andrea and Christine (aka my “sisters”). Andrea yelled at me for barging in, but I got some very good ideas. First, I am going to put green food colouring in the toilet tank so they will scream the next time they flush. I am also going to cover the bidet with plastic wrap so no water will come out. I will fill the medicine cabinet with fake plastic spiders, six on each shelf. I am turning the showerhead so the water will hit the shower curtain and then go on the floor, so they’ll have to clean that up. I am putting another nasty fake spider underneath the soap on the soap dish. I also plan to loosen the towel hook so their towels will fall on the floor. I am squeezing out all the toothpaste in the tube and replacing it with peanut butter so they won’t be able to brush their teeth. And, I am coating Andrea’s comb with vegetable oil so the next time she combs her hair it’ll be a huge mess. They won’t even dare to look at themselves in the mirror when I’m through with them!

Dear Mum, You told me to write down all the reasons why I don’t want to share a bedroom with Amy anymore, so here it is. Number one, having a bunk bed is so childish – we’re old enough to have our own beds. Plus, her bed is always unmade - her sheets are never tucked in and it’s just always so messy. I always try to keep my bed neat and my blankets folded. Also, we both have a lot of homework and having just one writing desk is really hard. She thinks I’m doing homework right now, actually. So she’s sitting there reading a book waiting for her turn to use the desk. And when she does, she’ll want to have the stereo on, but I like it quiet in here. Also, I hate the posters she puts on the walls, AND she always wants the window open cause she says she’s hot, but I’m always cold! So, I propose you let me use the loft as a bedroom. I think we’ll both be happier that way. Love, Johannes

Home Improvement 101 How to Make Your Office Space more Efficient and Welcoming There are many ways to make your office or study a better space in which to get your work done. You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to do this, either. Tip #1 – Consider replacing your standard chair with a swivel chair. You’ll be able to move around more easily, and switch in an instant from typing up a document on the computer to talking on the phone. Tip #2 – Buy a file cabinet which is big enough for all your paperwork. Using paper trays can lead to a very messy look, as they can easily overflow. Tip #3 – Replace your bulky reading lamp with a smaller version that takes up less space on your desk but still gives you the extra light you need. Tip #4 – If you have fluorescent lighting, this may be giving you a headache. Try using natural and yellow-coloured light for a more welcoming feel. Tip #5 – Try making the space more personal with special touches like a potted plant or small sculpture. Also, put inspiring pictures on the walls, like one of you winning an award or on a special vacation. These are just a few of many ideas that can help make your study a place where you can work, and be happy, too.

Dear Kara, Today was the craziest day ever at the coffee shop. I mean, I’m glad I got a job there; working as a waitress isn’t that hard – you write down what people order and then bring it to them! But today I got all sorts of people; a man who just stared at the menu for like twenty minutes trying to decide what to have – I tried to be patient, but it was ridiculous. There was another guy who was adding so much cream to his coffee that he turned it white – and then asked for more! Then there were two guys sitting at the counter who easily spent two hours chatting – which is fine, but I bet I refilled each of their coffee cups ten times! And, to make the day even more stressful, one of the helpers dropped a tray with a full cup of coffee on it. Luckily there was fresh coffee in the coffee machine so that customer didn’t have to wait too long. At least the tip jar was nice and full by the end of the day. It needs to be, if I’m going to pay for school. How’s your receptionist job going? I miss you! Love, Martha

As a restaurant reviewer, I have eaten in dozens of fine establishments. But I must say that Danny’s, in the Victoria Street district, is perhaps one of the best. When I entered, the maître d’ greeted me promptly and courteously. While they prepared my table, I admired the waiting area, which was adorned with beautiful flower arrangements and also featured a Specials board with the fresh fish of the day – salmon, my favourite. The host called “Iverson, party of one!” and I was brought to a nice out-of-the-way table with a spotless tablecloth and comfortable covered chairs. My waitress appeared almost immediately with an icy cold water pitcher. I do have to say that she was a bit forgetful, and left the pitcher on my table during my entire meal. However, she was very attentive while taking my order. I was apprehensive when I saw that a different waitress was bringing my order, but it was exactly as I had specified. I had trouble deciding what to have, since the menu featured many appetizing choices. As I was tasting my food, however, I knew I had picked just the right dishes. The French onion soup wasn’t too salty, the risotto was cooked to perfection, and the roast duck was juicy and tender. I noticed that all the other diners around me also seemed to be enjoying their meals. My compliments go out to Danny, owner and head chef. I will be eating here again.

Hi, Ellen, Sorry I haven’t emailed you in a while – you know how crazy it can get with the children! You won’t believe who I met while I was in the grocery store the other day – Caroline from high school! I forgot my shopping list so I was having trouble deciding what to buy. I turned down an aisle, pushing my shopping trolley along, when I saw her. She was looking at microwave dinners. I was surprised to see her little shopping basket filled with junk food – you know how healthy she used to be. When I said hello, she didn’t recognize me at first - can you believe it? We started wandering the aisles together, chatting like old times. I got a few oranges and melons in the produce section, and Caroline was weighing apples when she told me she was out of work. I felt very badly for her. We kept talking as we reached the checkout. I saw a newspaper on the magazine rack with the current unemployment rate – I tried to hide it from her, but she saw it and started crying. The bagger, a young man, looked at us like we were crazy but we didn’t care. Caroline put her items through after me, and as the young man was bagging the groceries, you know what I did – I paid for them. She tried to protest but I told the checker to close up the cash register quickly. She cried even more then, but I could tell she was grateful. We promised to be in touch – I’ll let you know if we make any plans. How is John these days, by the way? Still working overtime? Marianne

Dear Betty’s Bakery, I just wanted to tell you how much I love your bakery. You go beyond just basic bread and birthday cake. No matter what I’m looking for – perhaps a maple-glazed doughnut to complement my coffee, a perfectly flaky scone, or even a chocolate-chip biscuit for my nieces – I know that Betty’s will have the freshest and tastiest products. From the very first bite, the care you take in mixing the ingredients is obvious. I love bringing my nieces in because you can smell all the delicious goodies coming out of the oven, and the samples you have on the counter are always a real treat. I was tasting a muffin the other day - a blueberry one – and thought I had gone to heaven! The littlest girl also likes watching the bakers as they are frosting cakes - it´s amazing how artistic they are. Even your “basic” bread is beyond delicious – you must have your workers kneading the dough for hours to get that rich, dense flavour. It’s no wonder you always have to refill the basket! I recommend your bakery to everyone I can. In fact, a friend of mine wanted to know where she could get a really flavourful apple pie - not too sweet, with a flaky crust – and I sent her to you. Thank you for all the deliciousness you have brought into my life and into my family’s, as well! All the best, Maggie Mode

Hi, Alexa, I can’t believe you missed Erica’s bachelorette party! We had so much fun. We went to a bar called the Lighthouse – they have the biggest selection of draft beer on tap in town. People got a little crazy! Our cocktail waitress tried to keep up with our orders, but we gave up and went to order most of our drinks from the bartender. Marie, the maid of honour, actually started yelling at the bartender when he wasn’t serving her drinks fast enough. But he was really cute and I thought he was doing the best he could. I mean, he was mixing drinks and pouring beer at the same time. I was sitting at the bar watching him serve all those drinks, and I was impressed. So I actually wrote my phone number on a cocktail napkin and gave it to him! A few drinks later, we were all up on the stage singing karaoke at the top of our lungs – so I’m not sure how likely he is to call, since we were pretty silly. But there were lots of cute guys to talk to in general, and we all got lots of attention – though Erica obviously got the most. And when we left, Marie was getting a phone number- from the bouncer!

It can be tough when you’re trying to lose weight. You think that you can’t enjoy your favourite foods. But the truth is that you can have almost any food you like – as long as you practise portion control and choose lean options. What does this mean? First of all, when choosing proteins, your best choice is obviously fish, like a delicious salmon fillet served with a lemon wedge for flavour. But if you MUST have fried chicken, try to eat the white meat – and avoid the greasier drumstick – or even worse, the wing, which is almost all skin and no meat. You should also be careful that no matter what you eat, you try to avoid consuming too much salt. This means not only reading the label on that can of tomato juice, but also not overdoing it with the salt pot when seasoning your steamed vegetables. Yes, carrots and broccoli are good for you, but too much sodium is not! Can you have butter and other condiments? Of course you can! But again, practice moderation. Don´t put the entire tub of margarine out on the table – use a tablespoon to measure out a single portion and use only that. Also, remember that, besides your regular mayonnaise and butter, that jar of mustard in your fridge contains lots of strong flavour – and you only need to use a tiny bit. Can you have sugar? The answer, again, is yes – in small amounts. Keep the sugar bowl in the cabinet so it’s hard to access. If you can, use sugar cubes to keep track of the amount you’re consuming. Go ahead and put some whipped cream on that mug of hot chocolate – but only a dab. Stay hydrated. It’s easy to think we’re hungry when we’re really thirsty. Put a pitcher of ice water on the dinner table and be sure to drink half a glass before you even start eating. Make a pot of tea when you think you’re hungry for a snack – and you may find you’re not so hungry anymore. Finally, as you try to add healthier foods – fruits and vegetables – to your diet, remember that a serving size is smaller than we think. You don’t have to eat a whole bunch of grapes – ¾ of a cup will do nicely. Keep a platter of fruit on your kitchen counter to encourage you to reach for these instead of a biscuit when you need a snack. It really is true – small changes and easy choices can make losing weight a much simpler proposition. Good luck!

Dear Mum, Yesterday I was feeling a little stressed at work, so I thought I’d go and sit outside on a bench and just people-watch for a while. I realized that there are a lot of people out there with just as much stress as me! First of all, a city street is not a good place for relaxing. There is so much going on. I saw a young man who was hurrying to answer the phone that was ringing in the phone box, and who almost got hit as he was crossing the street. Then there was an actual accident – one car rear-ended another, right in front of me! They hadn’t been paying attention to the traffic light, and the first one stopped suddenly – and the other guy ran right into him. The scary part is that there was a man on the pedestrian crossing and they could have hit him. I also watched as a woman was doing her best at hailing a taxi – but they kept passing her by. It made me glad I take public transport – I mean, even though waiting at the bus stop can be boring, it’s nice to know you will always get a ride. I do try to be careful when I step off the kerb onto the bus, though – it´s so slippery in winter! There was a delivery truck around the corner that I saw, too – those delivery men are strong AND fast. Even though there was a clear signpost stating that they could not park there, they had their work done in less than five minutes. What was sad was the homeless person I saw across the street, sleeping on a bench. I hope he has a shelter to go to at night. Anyways, it wasn´t the most relaxing way to spend my lunch break – but it did give me a little perspective. How are Dad and Muffy? Be sure to give them hugs and kisses (and strokes!) from me. Love, Elena

The Ballard arson case took an interesting turn yesterday in court. The prosecutor carefully interrogated each person on the witness stand. His final statement, eloquently making his case, seemed to condemn Ballard. As he was accusing the defendant, the members of the jury could be seen nodding their heads in agreement. However, the defence lawyer was preparing his argument the entire time. As he gave his opening statement, he approached the jury box without hesitation, and instantly captivated the jury – and the rest of the audience - with his emotional plea for sympathy for Ballard’s difficult childhood. The trial was adjourned before defence could call witnesses, but when the judge banged the gavel, the jury no longer seemed so convinced. It remains to be seen if the defence can follow up on its strong opening.

Dear Mum, I really should have paid more attention to your instructions on how to wash clothes! I was at the laundrette on Saturday and it was a disaster! I was able to figure out which one was the washing machine, but then I couldn´t get it to run. I must have pushed every button and turned every knob on it before I figured it out. It was really confusing. And then once I got the first load done, the tumble dryer wouldn´t work, either! It turns out that the power cord had come loose. I got it plugged back in and dried the first load. But the problems continued! I was emptying the dryer and realized I had shrunk some of my favourite shirts! And then, I had the worst time folding the clothes – each shirt took me like a minute to fold neatly. How do you do it so fast? By the time I finished and loaded my laundry basket up with clean clothes, a whole afternoon had gone by. I can see I have a lot to learn. Love, Janine

London, 17 June 2010 - A major bank robbery occurred Friday afternoon at Epic Bank. Witnesses have stated that the robber was a tall man with a low-pitched voice. He and his four accomplices wore masks, making more definite identification impossible, though footage from security cameras is being closely examined. Barbara Teed, an Epic Bank patron, was present at the scene: “I was at the window talking with the cashier when it happened. The men came in and started waving their guns around. They had one young man kneeling on the ground – I was so afraid they were going to shoot them, I was scared stiff. Everyone else was putting their hands in the air, but I couldn´t move an inch.” Another witness, William Andersen, was directly threatened by the robbers: “I was close to the door when I saw they were holding up the bank. I tried to get away. One of them yelled at me and the next thing I knew I was laying on the floor. Still, I tried to keep an eye on them while they were grabbing the money and putting it in their bags – I wanted to see if maybe I could identify one of them.” Unfortunately, neither Andersen nor any of the other witnesses has been able to provide a detailed description. If you have any information about this crime, please contact the police department immediately.

Hi, Madison, I had the WORST day yesterday! The Gregory family asked me to babysit for them – never again! Mrs. Gregory asked me to take the kids to a department store so they could pick out a present for their cousin Thomas’s birthday. They were little monsters! I couldn’t get them to stay in the boys’ section – first little Amanda ran over to the girls’ section because she wanted to try on a pink dress – “for the party,” she said. Then her older brothers Bryce and Alex decided they were “big boys” and started pulling slacks off the racks in the men’s section. Then all three of them disappeared – I found Amanda trying to climb into a crib in the babies’ section, but it took me another five minutes to find the boys. I finally discovered the both of them hiding inside the skirt of an extra-large dress in the plus-size section. But it didn’t stop there – then the three of them ran over to the women’s section, saying they wanted to pick out a present for Mrs. Gregory – but when I followed them over there, they escaped to the fine jewellery section, saying they were going to buy their mummy a diamond necklace. I could tell the salesperson was angry – they were putting their dirty hands all over the display case. I apologised and tried to get them to come away – but then there was Amanda sticking her fingers in the eyeshadow samples at the cosmetics counter. I finally managed to bribe them to come and sit down at the café with a biscuit and a hot cocoa. I ran and bought dear little cousin Thomas’s gift while they were still having their treat. I swear I will never babysit for them again. Were we this bratty when we were kids? Your big sister, Lizzie

GENERAL MEMO TO ALL PET WORLD EMPLOYEES: We will have an all-staff meeting this Saturday at 7am. In the meantime, please keep the following in mind: 1) Mickey the Massive Mouse keeps escaping from his cage. He is one of our customers’ favourites and we do not want anything bad to happen to him. We all know the snakes would love to make a meal out of him, so please – make sure all hatches are closed securely. 2) We do not mind little children pointing at the tarantula – but when they start tapping on the glass of its case, it is a problem. Remember, all our spiders have been de-fanged and de-venomed, but there is no reason to allow them to be irritated unnecessarily. Please say something to these children and to their parents. 3) We have also noticed that Polly the Parrot is shedding her feathers right now and is not in a good mood. Please keep her on her perch behind the counter until she finishes moulting. If a customer wishes to hold or touch a bird, please direct them to the parakeets or canaries. 4) As always, dear Pet World employees: when a very small child wants to pet the puppies, please make sure that you are the one holding the puppies. One of our Dachshunds was very nearly dropped the other day by a three-year-old. 5) The same goes for the kittens. No matter how much the child insists, you must be the one holding the kittens. We had a customer get a small scratch the other day and her mother spent a half hour complaining. 6) Some of our customers are very selective when picking out a fish. If they are picking a larger tropical species, you may be patient with this. But if they are choosing a smaller goldfish or guppy, encourage them to pick the first one that swims into the net. We are losing valuable time standing in front of the aquariums. Thank you, everyone. We look forward to seeing you bright and early on Saturday. Scones and coffee will be provided.

To: Parents of Buster James , From: ___ Mrs. Royce ____ , Dear Mr. & Mrs. James, I am sorry to tell you that Buster has not been behaving well in the classroom lately. I thought perhaps it was a question of time, but his behaviour has only gotten worse. At the beginning of the year, Buster was a model student, raising his hand to ask questions, and sitting quietly when he finished his work. He even organized my bookcase for me one day while I was grading papers at my desk. But, a few weeks ago, the problems began. For example, on one occasion he was working out a maths problem on the whiteboard in front of the class, and made a mistake. When another student pointed it out, Buster threw an eraser at him. Obviously it did not hurt anyone, but it concerned me. The throwing of objects has continued – he very nearly punched a hole in the screen during another student’s science presentation. One day during geography studies he tried to sit on his globe and split it in two! I have also caught him tormenting our class pet, Bubbles the Bunny, and sketching inappropriate drawings in his textbooks. In addition, he is constantly leaning over in his seat and bothering his classmates. Is there anything going on at home I should know about? Please, contact the school as soon as possible so we can schedule a visit and get to the bottom of this unusual behaviour. Thank you for your time. Regards, Mrs. Royce

MEMO RE: SAFETY INSPECTION OF ROOM 107 (SCIENCE LABORATORY) TEACHER: MICHAEL PARKS, BIOLOGY INSTRUCTOR COMPLETED BY: DEPARTMENT CHAIR MADELEINE ROONEY Mr. Parks, I observed your class last September 23rd to be sure your students were following all safety procedures. In general, protective equipment was worn consistently, though not all students were wearing their lab coats. This is very important to avoid chemical spills on clothing or skin. The fire extinguisher on the wall was up-to-date, and the eye wash station was clearly marked with a sign. Do your students know how to operate it? I did see several problems; for example a student who was dissecting a frog was covering his nose with his hand. This is unsanitary, which is why I suggest you provide masks. I also noticed that one of the lab tables is located far too close to the sink, which makes it difficult to move around. One student who was measuring water into a beaker bumped into that table and nearly caused some boiling chemicals to spill! One of your students (I believe her name is Susan) was so intent on looking through the microscope that she didn’t notice her slides scattered all over the table. It is important that you teach your students to be orderly while they conduct experiments or research. Now, there were lab partners at a back table who were also conducting some dangerous experiments – one was mixing chemicals quite confidently, while the other looked surprised at the bubbling mixture she had created. Neither one was writing anything down in their notebooks. How will they learn from their mistakes – or successes - if they do not write down their experiences? In fact, Mr. Parks, I think the safest individual in your class was the skeleton by the door. I would suggest that you work with your students more closely on all aspects of laboratory safety – not just wearing gloves and goggles.

Speaking of transportation … I just took the London bus for the first time, and it was quite an experience! So much is happening at once. Getting on the bus is pretty easy – you don’t have to worry about paying the fare in cash; you use a pre-paid card. But I almost missed my stop because I was watching all the people: a nice young man giving up his seat to a pregnant woman; another one hanging on the strap so hard I thought it would break; an older gentleman reading the paper (I can’t do that, I get motion sickness) … there was also a kid hanging out of the window, but the driver yelled at him and made him sit back down. I also had fun watching a man nodding off in his seat – he kept waking up, looking around, and falling asleep again. It was also interesting to see how firmly the bus sticks to its schedule – there was a man running to catch the bus, but the driver was already pulling away, and didn’t stop. I felt a bit bad for him. You also have to be careful about pulling the cord too early or too late for your stop. Luckily someone else was getting off the bus at the same time as me, so I didn’t have to worry about it. Overall the buses are quite clean, though I do think there are too many advertisements – all over the inside and outside! But, I suppose that’s important to keep costs down. At any rate, it’s a convenient way to travel and I plan on learning the routes. Maybe you should consider it if your car repairs are too expensive! Miss you, Vanessa

Dear Atlantic Air Customer Service, I wanted to tell you what a wonderful experience I had on a recent flight with AA. My wife and I were travelling to the Bahamas on vacation, and we were originally seated in an exit row. My wife recently had surgery, so we requested a change of seat. Unfortunately, only isolated middle seats were available – which again would have been a problem for her as she needs to get up frequently. So the flight attendant kindly re-seated us in first class. The extra space helped my wife enjoy the flight so much more, and having an aisle seat made it easier for her to reach the lavatory. Your newer jet airplanes are beautifully equipped, I have to say. I could actually hear the pilot as he was making his announcements! I like the design of the new tray tables; usually it seems like my laptop is too heavy for them. I am a tall individual and usually I hit my head on the overhead bins when I am getting in or out of my seat – but the new cabins feel very spacious. Also, our long flight was made much more pleasant by watching the in-flight movie – on screens which are much bigger and brighter than what I am accustomed to. As we reached the Bahamas, I could see blue skies and blue water from my window seat. But the truth is that relaxing in First Class made us feel like we had started our vacation early. We both want to thank you for a wonderful experience, and assure you that we will be flying Atlantic Air again. Best regards, Landon Michael

It’s time to prepare your car for summer driving! Planning on taking a road trip with the family? Or cruising around town enjoying the good weather? Don’t go anywhere until you’ve completed everything on our to-do list: 1) Have a mechanic look under the bonnet to be sure your engine is perfectly tuned. This will help you save money on gas. This is also the time to make sure your gear stick is moving smoothly – you don’t want to have a problem with your transmission on the road! It may also be a smart idea to have your brake pads and hand-brake checked out. 2) Also replace any broken headlights or taillights, as well as wornout windscreen wipers. You can probably do these repairs yourself. 3) Clean your car, inside and out. This means vacuuming the front and back seats, polishing the dashboard with dust repellent, and removing all unneeded papers and items from the glove compartment. 4) If you are going to be the primary driver this summer, take a moment and adjust everything to your liking. Pre-set the stations on the radio, adjust the side view and rear view mirrors to minimize blind spots, and raise or lower the steering wheel to a comfortable height. 5) Before leaving town, be sure your tyres are properly inflated. This is for safety as well as good gas mileage. Then roll down the windows, turn up the music, and enjoy summer driving – it’ll be over before you know it!

Dear Mum and Dad, I am having a wonderful time on the Robinsons’ boat – thank you so much for letting me come with Janie and her parents! I am learning so much! First of all, I know you are worried about safety. There is a nice big lifeboat with its own small motor, and of course several life preservers in case someone goes overboard. They have taught me very carefully about being safe up on deck – I know how to watch out for the boom when they move the sails, and I always keep one hand on the rail. In fact, I’m learning so well that just today, when Mrs. Robinson was steering the boat, she let me hold the wheel! It was very exciting to feel the way the rudder responds to the movement of the wheel. I’m not very good at plotting a course yet – Mr. Robinson told me we would have ended up on the wrong island – but it’s fun to learn. And, of course, Janie and I get to spend lots of time just lounging on deck, drinking cold lemonade and gossiping. We did have a bad moment earlier this week when there were no winds and we had to use the engine. We were in a dolphin-sighting area, but the noise of the propellers in the water drove them away. Mrs. Robinson says maybe we can try going there again later. It’s time for us to go now – they say we’ll be pulling up the anchor soon. We should make port again in a few days, and I’ll write you another email then. Can you believe your daughter is becoming a real sailor? Lots of love, Alexia

Los Angeles, 30 July 2010 – Problems have been reported on the set of Angelina Roberts’s newest film, Runaway Raider. Three months into production, studio executives have replaced the director, James Lucas, with a relative unknown, Bryce Ballard. Sources claim that Lucas was going over-budget; for example, demanding extravagant numbers of extras for disaster sequences. Word also has it that Lucas was dissatisfied with the look that the film’s make-up artists designed for the actors representing the zombie invaders. Sources say that Lucas wanted to use special computer graphics effects instead, which the studio rejected. Additional pressure has been put on the production with news of another disaster movie featuring Roberts’s major box-office rival, Cameron Ryan, directed by Steven Scott. Ryan and co-star Tom Gibson have been rehearsing intensely in preparation for filming. Unlike Runaway Raider, which is being produced mostly under the lights of an LA set, Scott’s movie will be filmed onlocation in New Zealand. What does this mean for Ballard? He will have to deliver Runaway Raider on budget and ahead of schedule. He will have to guarantee quality acting, even after eight hours in the make-up chair. He will also have to maximize on Roberts’s audience appeal. The actress herself has expressed her support of Ballard, saying, “I think Ballard has the right talents to make this movie a true thrill for audiences.”

To: Pierce Township Council From: Concerned Citizens of Pierce We are writing to express our concerns about the terrible condition of our train station. If we want Pierce to become a tourist destination, it is urgent that we renovate the facility to attract visitors. We remember when the station was bright and new. We have fond memories of showing our tickets to a friendly, helpful conductor, or of waving good-bye to our visitors. The train itself was always shiny and clean. Today, however, the station has lost much of its beauty. The glass ceiling is always dirty, blocking out the sunlight. Asking for directions at the information desk is a waste of time, because they never seem to know where anything is. If you are running for the train, the conductor will probably NOT wait for you. Even the clock always seems to have the wrong time. Eight trains a day used to arrive in our town. Looking at the schedule today, we are down to only six – and three on Sundays. We must invest city money in the station and in the people who work there so that all Pierce residents can enjoy greater prosperity. Sincerely, Concerned Citizens of Pierce

Hi, kids, Your dad and I are having a wonderful time on vacation. The flight was great and we had no trouble getting a rental car. The hotel isn’t exactly the greatest, though. Some areas are new and remodeled and others really need repair. For example, the front desk in the reception area is just beautiful – it’s made of polished marble – and the pool is clean, clear, and even has a deep end for diving. The hot tub is a bit small, unfortunately – we wanted to relax in the bubbles last night and had to wait half an hour for some other people to get out. Unfortunately, the restaurant is very minimal – they don’t even have steak on the menu! Even though I know it’s good exercise, I refuse to use the stairwell – there’s not enough lighting and it feels rather unsafe. But the people who work here are so nice. When we were checking in, we requested a room with a view and the receptionist gave it to us, no extra charge. We met another couple when we were taking the lift up to our room the first day and they told us that scheduling a tour using the hotel’s concierge service was easy and a great way to save money. To test that, I had your dad use wi-fi on his laptop in the lobby to search for a city tour (while I met with the concierge) – and the hotel really did have the better deal! Which reminds me – it’s time to get ready! Please send us an email soon; we want to know that you and the house are all in one piece. Love, Mum

Even though I know it’s good exercise, I refuse to use the _______ – there’s not enough lighting and it feels rather unsafe. But the people who work here are so nice. When we were _______, we requested a room with a view and the _______ gave it to us, no extra charge. We met another couple when we were _______ up to our room the first day and they told us that _______ using the hotel’s concierge service was easy and a great way to save money. To test that, I had your dad _______ on his laptop in the lobby to search for a city tour (while I met with the concierge) – and the hotel really did have the better deal! Which reminds me – it’s time to get ready! Please send us an email soon; we want to know that you and the house are all in one piece. Love, Mum

Hey, Gerard, I am so tired of being in the hospital! Believe me, breaking both your legs skiing is NOT a good idea. I mean, when I was getting ready for surgery, it was a little bit exciting – talking to the doctors, finding out what would happen in the operating room, watching them put in the IV to make me sleepy … but now, I have to do physical therapy for two hours, twice a day, plus exercises in my room. It is so hard! Right now a nurse comes to roll me over to PT in a wheelchair, and then I work with the therapist until my muscles are shaking. I won’t be allowed to leave until I’m on crutches, at least. I suppose it could be worse. The ICU is on the way to PT, and that’s where they’ve got the people who are on life support. I’ve seen some people go by on stretchers and from the looks on their faces, they’re definitely worse off than me. It’s just so boring. You need to come to visit and sneak me in some chocolates and cola from the coffee shop. They want me eating healthy so I don’t put on too much weight. Time to do my stretching exercises now. Write me an email soon or come visit, seriously, I might just die of boredom if you don’t! Mike

HOW TO MAKE DOCTOR’S OFFICE VISITS EASIER FOR YOUR CHILD Think about how scary a doctor’s office must seem for a child. People wearing masks, strange machines – and of course, the idea that everything will hurt. There are things you can do to help your child do well. 1) Explain to your child that people go to the doctor to feel better. Some children get scared in the waiting room when they hear people coughing loudly, blowing their noses repeatedly, or complaining of pain. Remind him that soon everyone will be feeling better, and that’s why they’re there. 2) Let your child know what will happen ahead of time. Tell her that the first step will be getting weighed on a big scale (which may also measure her height), that the doctor will use a cold stethoscope to listen to her heart, and that the nurse will use a blood pressure cuff that will squeeze her arm. Tell her that none of it will hurt, and be positive after each step: “See, now that squeezing was easy, wasn’t it?” 3) Ask the doctor to show your child what tools she is using, and even give a demonstration on you. For example, before looking in his ears, the doctor might let your child look in YOUR ears. The same can also be done before checking his reflexes (so he knows the little hammer doesn’t hurt). 4) The scariest part for most children (and adults!) is if drawing blood for samples or injecting some kind of medication is necessary. Some children respond well to being shown the syringe and having the process explained. Others do better if they don’t look. It is important to remember not to minimize your child’s pain or fear and to give plenty of positive encouragement and reinforcement. Most doctors have lollipops on hand, too. Doctor’s visits may never be actual “fun,” but the fear can be reduced with careful action on your part and by communicating with your healthcare provider.

Hi, little sis! Mark is going out of town for a week on business – but he gave me a gift certificate for TWO to my favourite beauty salon to make up for missing date night. Do you want to come with me? I don’t know about you, but the ends of my hair haven’t seen a pair of scissors in months. I also find the whole process very relaxing – especially the washing part – it’s so nice just to lean back into the sink and have someone else use hot water and shampoo to massage my stress away. And the conditioner they use is wonderful – I can never get a comb to go through these curls at home! It is amazing to see all the hair they end up sweeping away at the end … did all that really come from my head? I know you don’t really like anyone else cutting your hair, but the gift certificate is very generous – you could think about getting highlights again – I think you looked great with the blonde ones you had a few years ago! Of course, that would mean sitting under the dryer for a while, which would make it hard for us to continue gossiping, ha ha! Or we could make it simple – what do you think about a side-by-side spa day? We could see about getting a pedicure and manicure, and maybe a shoulder massage and facial mask, too. My skin has been really dry lately. Oh, this would be so much fun, Angie, I think we both deserve a little special attention. I’m thinking either Tuesday or Thursday – let me know when it would work for you, okay? Lots of love, Your Big Sister

Hi, honey, The bachelor party weekend is going fine. I’m sorry I haven’t answered my cell phone, but I lost the charger. We’ve been spending most of our time down in the casino; Mark is a serious gambler and he’s actually won a lot of money. I was playing the fruit machines, but that gets boring after a while – and frustrating when you see little old ladies hitting the jackpot right and left while you win nothing. We had an exciting time yesterday, though. Scott was playing blackjack and losing badly – he kept busting with 22 or more – and the rest of us wanted to leave and get dinner. We kept telling him it was time to go, so he told the dealer, “This is my last hand, and I’m going all in.” Just as she was dealing the cards, we heard some really loud cheering coming from a craps table, where the shooter was rolling the dice. There were at least twenty people standing around the table, all of them shouting. Suddenly, three security guards came to the table. They took the shooter by the arms and kicked him out of the casino. Apparently he’d been using his own dice. But the good news? Scott actually won his hand! He went to the cage, cashed out his chips, and bought us all dinner. So, I’m having fun, but I miss you and can’t wait to see you Monday night. Love, Your hubby

Liverpool, 13 August, 2010 – Police officers responding to an anonymous emergency call discovered the bodies of two young men in an apartment on Redding Lane in the early hours of the morning. Alex Wong, lead detective on the case, has blocked off the crime scene and will not allow reporters past the police tape, but we have been able to learn some details about the incident. Officers have been taking statements since four a.m. from at least a dozen witnesses, filling several notepads with their observations. It appears that they all described hearing yelling and fighting from the apartment, and that this happened frequently. Photographers have not been permitted to enter, but it is rumoured that the bodies show signs of trauma, though no weapon has been found. When pressed for additional information, Detective Wong stated, “We need to let the crime scene investigators do their work. We are collecting evidence from every room in the apartment.” Wong also implied that after dusting for fingerprints, a possible suspect has been identified – though he will not release any names at this time. We will continue to report on this situation as new information becomes available.
