Keep safe with these security tips We all know that South Africa has a high crime rate and therefore many of us are living behind burglar bars, 6-foot electric fences and are armed with alarms. Having travelled abroad, I am struck by the fact that people generally don’t live this way in many other parts of the world. High levels of security are, however, a ‘normal’ way of life in our fearful South African culture. So with no immediate solution to the high crime rate, how do we stay safe? This is a bit of a conundrum, because despite all our security, burglaries still happen despite alarm systems and armed response. If there’s one thing about the South African criminal – they are resourceful, ingenious and brazen and will find a way. All we can do is try to make it difficult for them. Here are some basic tips for staying safe: 1) When I was growing up, neighbours looked out for one another. Today we live more insular lives and don’t really connect with our neighbours. But knowing your neighbours is a great way to keep one’s property safe. When going away on trips, you can ask them to keep a watch on your house and alert the police if they notice anyone suspicious. 2) When living in gated complexes, don’t buzz strangers in. Criminals use the tactic of buzzing any apartment, pretending
to live in the complex and claiming to have forgotten their gate remote or code and requesting to be let in. Once in they can break into as many apartments or vehicles as they can. 3) Lock away spades, axes, picks, etc. in the garden which can be used in an attack. 4) Keep a safe distance from cash-in-transit vehicles. You know how criminals like to get into a knock-down and shoot-out while hijacking those. Don’t get caught in the crossfire. 5) Take a self-defence class to learn how to react to an attack or mugging. Stay safe!

LEADING A MODELLING BUSINESS The last time we met, we spoke about getting my people to work WITH me. All about the relationships we cultivate at the work place...... Today, let's talk about, getting my people to WORK! I'm often asked this question: "How do I get my people to work?" The answer....... YOU, WORK!!! This principle is very simple....PEOPLE DO WHAT PEOPLE SEE. You are not required to do their work but as leaders we are required to show them what work looks like. Like most things in life, leadership is caught and not taught. Followers need a clear picture from their leaders. So also in the workplace. The living picture they see in their leaders produces energy, passion and motivation to keep them going. So in our endeavour to MODEL good leadership remember that: 1. Staff are always watching what you do. Just as children watch their parents and emulate their BEHAVIOUR. 2. It is easier to teach what's right than to do what's right. Nothing is more confusing than people who give good advice but set a bad example. A related thought is also true. Nothing is more convincing than convincing than people who give good advice and set good examples. 3. We should work on changing ourselves before trying to improve others. Our standard of excellence should be higher for myself than those I set for others. 4. The most valuable gift a leader can give is being a good example. I know that when applying these principles our people will find in us good models who lead from the front as together we lead our business to a higher level. Recipe, Food, Catering CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT FUDGE 115gr 175ml 2tbsp 675gr 150gr 1tsp
BUTTER – plus extra for greasing EVAPORATED MILK MILK GRANULATED SUGAR PLAIN CHOCOLATE -broken into pieces. PEPPERMINT OIL
1. Grease a 18cm square tin. Pour evaporated milk and milk into a large, heavy-based saucepan and add the sugar, butter and chocolate. Heat gently, stirring all the time, until the sugar has dissolved and the butter and the chocolate have melted. 2. Bring to the boil and boil for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until a little of the mixture, when dropped into a small bowl of cold water, forms a soft ball when rolled between the fingers. 3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and leave to cool for 5 minutes, and then add the peppermint oil. Beat the mixture vigorously with a wooden spoon until thick, creamy and grainy. 4. Immediately pour the mixture into the prepared tin, leave to cool, and then mark into square. When the fudge is cold and set, cut up the squares using a sharp knife... he Community Development Foundation Western Cape (CDF WCape) is one of six community foundations in South Africa. The organisation is an agent for change, facilitating, and connecting development work from the ground up and works directly with CBOs as they are often the most strategically positioned and achieve significant results with limited resources. Engagements with Community-based Organisations are normally via face-to-face dialogues and we relentlessly create spaces for conversation and social networking in an effort to cascade to more effective and localised programmes. The asset-based approach to CDF WCape’s Ms Beulah Fredericks, work seeks solutions beyond the traditional development approach Executive Director of diagnosing community problems with an external lens. Rather it champions the recognition and leveraging of assets within communities in order that they truly own their development processes. Youth Civic Engagement; Sustainable Livelihoods and Holistic Health and Wellbeing of Women are but a few of the exciting community interventions worth supporting. You have an opportunity to do so by joining us at one of our fun(d) raising events for this year. The AUCTION on 18 APRIL 2013 at 18H30 at the Western Province Cricket Club, Ave de Mist, Rondebosch, is AN OPEN invitation for your support. Please join us for a evening of fun and if you have artefacts and other paraphernalia to donate, call : Cheryl Crowie on 021 761 8339. 11 | reCONNECT Magazine | April 2013
