for Cholesterol, Glucose and Blood Pressure TESTS - with HIGH Cholesterol being the most concerning finding on the day. The spinning classes from Planet Fitness also contributed to a great atmosphere with good participation from onlookers. Curves ladies were energetic, doing Zumba and having BMI and fat % measured, which I gladly participated in. Fit Camp created a buzz with their 'mini boot camp' with off the hook, feet tapping music. Their education, on various 'keep fit' outdoor exercises, was a great eye-opener and what to do during those rainy days. The WP Blood Transfusion had their info table and had a register for people who were interested in donation blood. CDF - Community Development Foundation, promoting their programs. Jakura restaurant as well as U and Me Health, with their smoothies and juices, supported the event. Feel Pampered had their health products on display and gave advice on nutrition. Planet Nails - showcasing products, who they are and what they do. Juta Books contributed items for the goodie bag to be handed over at the Plumstead Dialysis Unit.

A cloudy cool morning set the tone for the day, which started off well with the little boys and girls with painted faces, from Gym Wizards & Flairs Gymnastics, who had everyone spellbound with all kinds of intricate gymnastic moves. A definite hit! NRC were responsible
Overall a great event! A special thanks to all who contributed to make Claremont, not just a clean, safe space but a healthier and fit community.

A salute to mothers
The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness ~ Honore de Balzac, Author
I think mothers will always have an advantage over fathers. It’s not that fathers don’t love and have a bond with their kids, but a mothers bond is different. It is the mother who carried a life within her and felt it grow until the day came when intense labour pain gave way to intense and overwhelming love for this new life just brought into the world. It is a moment unlike any other – the moment a woman becomes a mother. Mothers always love their children, even when their children don’t always seem to love them back. Mothers always forgive. Mothers always protect. Mothers always teach. Mothers are self-less – they will go without if necessary, rather than have their child suffer. I recently spent time babysitting my friend’s 7-year old son. Somewhere during the early mornings getting ready for school, picking up from school, breakfast, lunch, supper, homework, bath-time, reprimands and play time, it dawned on me – motherhood is hard work! Phew! How they do it, I don’t know. Parenting is exhausting yet mothers seem to become superwomen, juggling work, home, kids, cooking and numerous other tasks! Yes, today I stand in awe – I am in awe of mothers. So take the time this Mother’s Day to stand in awe of your mother! Happy Mother’s Day to all the supermoms out there!
X-FACTOR Lifestyle MEDICAL DOCTOR X-Factor Lifestyle Medical Centre opened doors recently in March 2012. This is a General Medical Practice with a difference. X-Factor Lifestyle Medical Centre offers the full services of a general medical practice, which includes the treatment of acute and chronic medical illnesses, health screening and general medical check-ups. However, the difference lies in the passion that Dr Fayruz Sattar has for helping patients understand that "prevention is always better than cure". She has extensive experience in general medical practice. "I have been practising for twenty years and in this time I have found that doctors need to impart this message with enthusiasm and vigour", she says. As part of her special interest in lifestyle interventions, Dr Fayruz Sattar has recently completed three years of study towards a Master's Degree in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine.
Leading with your Brand With so many different brands around, how do I excel or establish myself as the leading product or service provider? Let's take a closer look at the brand and branding. A brand is defined as a name, term, sign, symbol or design or combination of those that is intended to identify goods and services of one seller or group of sellers used to differentiate them from those of other sellers. Branding is not about getting to your target market but it's about getting your prospects to see YOU AS THE ONLY ONE WHO PROVIDES A SOLUTIONTOTHEIR ISSUE, CHALLENGE OR PROBLEM. Branding is a recognition factor that creates awareness...that you or your firm represents a certain quality in a particular area.....The value of the brand is that people purchase that brand for that brands own sake. So Brands create an attraction to products or services. It is true that perceptions become reality, therefore, remember that your branding will occur by default whether you intended it to or not. Therefor it's imperative that you create the brand that you desire. A brand that, delivers the message clearly, confirms your credibility, connects your target prospect emotionally, motivates a buyer, cements user loyalty. A brand that resides in the heart and minds of existing customers as well of prospects. One of the ways that you can influence their perceptions is your unique identity that sets you apart. It's your goal to get them to remember you, value you and to care about you. Remember that a successful branding message conveys what you stand for and what the client can expect. Therefore you need to clearly establish what you stand for and what you stand for in your business needs be in complete alignment with what you stand for as a person. Personal branding is far more than what you do, it is you! It allows you to distinguish yourself in what is unique about you, who you are and what you do differently from everyone else. So spend some significant time on creating your own brand as you continue to Lead (with your brand) from where you are.

Keep healthy this winter Winter is my favourite time of year. Comfort food, hot chocolate, soup and snuggling up. Winter also often gets the blame for weight gain. We tend to eat more in winter and sometimes more of the fattening foods. I mean let’s be honest, is there anything better on a cold winter’s day than hot fish and chips with that unmistakable sharp whiff of salt and vinegar that hits your nostrils! But winter doesn’t have to be about overeating on bad foods. Your favourite comfort foods can be tweaked to make it healthier. A good Mac ‘n Cheese is always great winter comfort food. A few changes to the way you make this popular dish will cut some calories. Use whole-wheat pasta and a sharp mature cheddar but balance it with a creamy low-fat cottage cheese. If you like to add something extra in your Mac ‘n Cheese (a lot of people like to add bacon), rather replace the bacon with spinach as a healthier option. Then comes dessert and bread pudding is always a winner. A simple dessert which can also have a lighter version. Use whole-wheat bread instead of white, less sugar and add some fruit like raisins, apples or pears to compensate for the reduced sugar. Experiment with some recipes and stay warm and healthy this winter!
