‘reCONNECT hosts another successful Perfect Fit Campaign’

reCONNECT Magazine, in association with CIDC (Claremont Improvement District Company), held the 2nd Perfect Fit Health Awareness event in Claremont on 23 November 2013. A cool breezy morning set the tone for a day of fun, fitness and a chance to 'know your numbers' with FREE screenings of glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, HIV and BMI. With young and old participating, the overall message of the campaign is to create awareness of the importance of regular screening tests and encourage a healthier lifestyle. The day kicked off with Super DJ Oliver setting the tone with pulsating music. Shahied Abrahams entertained the crowd as MC. Kids’ dance groups from Hanover Park youth development (assisted by Penny Roberts) Sunlands Primary School hip hop dancers as well as the Lavender Hill dancers from Journey Back to You, performed and entertained the crowd. Planet Fitness had everyone literally ‘spinning their wheels’ with their energetic spinning classes adding vibrancy to the day, while dietician, Clint Pietersen, measured participants BMI and fat percentage. Fit Camp demonstrated some easy outdoor activities to practice at home and created a buzz with their 'mini boot camp' challenges which boosted heart rates and laughter levels! They handed a FREE 1 Week Fit Camp voucher to the overall winner of the challenge. The National Renal Care (NRC) Rasheda, Carol & Fagma, together with the Claremont Clinic, Sr Melody Camelo, Sr Barbara Reeks and Ann Albrecht doing HIV testing and health screenings. They were aptly assisted by Diane and her team of Compassion In Action, while Drs Evelyn & Neil Burman provided information on homeopathic remedies. Sister Maria and Shihaam from St. Lukes Hospice Charity Shops educated the public on health, the donation of unwanted goods etc. and their fund raising activities towards the care of patients with life-threatening illnesses.

Michele Muller of Herbalife and Sofia of Life Choices presented information on their products and programmes. 34 HIV tests performed (all negative) A total of 105 screenings, with results showing: High blood sugars > 8: 3 females, 2 males High Cholesterols > 5.5: 7 females, 2 males > 1 very high & advised to have proper lab test done. High blood pressures > 150/90: 9 females, 2 males. All advised to have it tested again in couple of days at another venue & if still raised, to seek medical advice. All persons with abnormal results also advised to do lifestyle adjustments. There were lots of spot prizes on the day and wonderful goodie bags handed out to all on the day,, contents of which were generously donated by Dischem, Woolworths Foods store in Claremont as well as the Venue in Lansdowne, with a donation of fruit and juice for participants and our beneficiary, Cafda Foster Care Program. We extend a heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to making the day a success and to those who help make the Claremont CBD, not just a safe space, but a fitter and healthier one.

From the Editor: A Special Thank You to our Advertisers, YOU the Readers, the reCONNECT Team and our Printers SED Printing Solutions. May this time ahead be a time of reflection and gratitude, filled with special shared moments with family and friends. The true spirit of Christmas is in love and compassion, in sharing and in nurturing hope, a spirit of joy and gratitude for all God has done, to enable us to be stronger and better equipped to meet the challenges that 2014 may bring. Have a wonderful, safe, & happy festive season everyone!

Stay sane during the silly season

Every year people rush about doing Christmas shopping and making preparations. For many it is a stressful time, not a joyous one. How do you dial back the madness? Remember the reason you are celebrating For those who are Christian, keep the reason you are celebrating top of mind. Focus your energy on the spiritual side and that is bound to make you feel more centred and peaceful. Plan ahead If you’ve left it too late this year, make a note to start earlier next year. Save a small amount every month and start your Christmas shopping in the middle of the year rather than leaving it to Christmas Eve! This one change will drastically reduce your stress and save money as you will be buying items when they cost less rather than during the heart of the festive season when things are more expensive. Eat-out rather than cook-in

Avoid the jam-packed shopping malls and the mad crowds running around looking for turkeys and gammon and rather book a nice restaurant early. It’s easier and a lot more relaxing and you won’t be sweating over the stove and hoping the turkey doesn’t dry out in the oven! Limit the partying Socialising is part of the festive season. Maintain a balance though – make sure you have quiet time at home. Spending all of your annual leave running around from party to party will mean you drag yourself back to work more exhausted than when you left! Most importantly, don’t over-indulge – try to eat and drink sensibly and continue with your exercise routine. This will keep you calmer and lower stress levels. Happy Holidays!

Out & About

Home Maintenance & Security

Stay safe this festive season It’s that time of the year again – where we unwind, party and generally just chill out. There’s nothing quite like a Cape Town summer and that undeniable Cape Town holiday atmosphere. The city buzzes, the beaches are packed and the nightlife pumps. Unfortunately, it is also a time of the year that criminals capitalise on. Last year 67 000 people across South Africa were arrested over the festive period for crimes ranging from murder, robberies, rape, burglary, kidnapping, fraud and shoplifting. Western Cape Police have announced that this year they will be running a number of anti-crime operations over the festive season. A watchful eye will be kept on illegal shebeens. The Traffic Department and Metro Police will also run regular roadblocks to help crack down on drunk driving and drug trafficking. The City of Cape Town is ensuring beach safety with lifeguards, disaster risk management staff and law enforcement being deployed to beaches across the city. Law enforcement can protect citizens to a certain extent, but it is still imperative that we take steps to stay safe. -- Keep your home safe by taking the necessary precautions. -- Be safe at the beach. Keep an eye on your children, and don’t drink too much. -- Park your car in well-lit areas. 06 |reCONNECT Magazine | DEC 2013/ JAN 2014

EXPERIENCE IS (NOT) BEST TEACHER!

As we rapidly head towards the end of 2013 and the end of another year in business, I think the time is right to ask: "How are we and how are our businesses?". Another year with so many experiences, so surely we must be wiser? Not necessarily, I say. In my opinion experience is not always the best teacher, contrary to what we were told and made to believe. If that was the case, why is it that after so many experiences, we still tend to repeat the same mistakes as we go along? Surely then our experiences in itself is not such a good teacher? I came to understand and learn that an EVALUATED EXPERIENCE is the one that teaches. Unless we stop, look and learn from an experience, it becomes just another experience. It is the ones that we walk away from with new insights and the knowledge that we and our business will grow because of it, that teaches. So as we approach the end of this year, let us intentionally take time to reflect. Consider all our personal experiences both good and bad and see what we have learnt. Celebrate our victories because of that which we did right and revisit our less successful moments and ask the right questions. Questions like: "What did we or did we not do?" Why did that which we did, not work? What could we have done differently? And.....What did we learn? These are some of the questions we need to ask during our reflection (look-back) moments. If not, soon we'll be right into 2014, conducting business "as usual" while expecting different results. We need to bear in mind that only intentional change can produce the desired results. If things have to change, let's change it as we continue to lead our businesses, from wherever we are.
