isual appeal in general, in the social and economic enhancement of communities these days is welldocumented. A public space is a social space such as a town square that is generally open and accessible. They produce safer, more attractive places for people to live and work in an era in which the look, feel and quality of life of a city are critical to attracting residents and businesses." "'Safer' is a word that may not come to mind with talk of improving the appearance of public spaces, Creating beautiful public spaces is crucial to improving sense of community. Public space can be defined as any space that everyone is welcome to. A public space is open to people of all kinds and does not exclude anyone. The public sphere plays an important role in our communities: it's where we observe and learn to interact with people who are different from us. Public space has also become something of a touchstone for critical theory in relation to philosophy, (urban) geography, visual art, cultural studies, social studies and urban design. The term 'public space' is also often misconstrued to mean other things such as 'gathering place', which is an element of the larger concept of social space. Most streets, including the pavement, are considered public space, as are town squares or parks. Government buildings which are open to the public, such as public libraries are public space. Although not considered public space, privately owned buildings or property visible from sidewalks and public thoroughfares may affect the public visual landscape, for example, by outdoor advertising. In real sense, Public space is all around us a vital part of our everyday urban life. The space we take through to our various walks of life, the place where children play or the nature and wildlife, the local park in which we enjoy sports. Public spaces can simply be a place to get away for a moment from the bustle of a busy daily life or in other words public space is our open air living room, our outdoor leisure centre. Despite their importance to us, our public spaces are often taken for granted or neglected. The value of public spaces includes economic value, impact on physical and mental health, benefit for children and the young people, reducing crime and rear of crime. They're becoming less important. All of this means we may need a concerted campaign to keep the "public" in the public sphere, to actively encourage people to observe and interact with each other. We may even need to redesign our public places to do this. http://www.planetizen.com/node/29865

Photography and Arts

Point-and-shoot technology has progressed to the point that just about anyone can take pictures that are in focus, properly exposed, and fairly well lit, freeing you to concentrate on artistic aspects. The challenge that remains is to compose a good picture by controlling how the subject is seen and what emotions are felt by the viewer. This can be done through composition - the relationship of the elements in an image with each other and with the frame. You know that good feeling you get when you snap a great shot? Well, just follow these guidelines, and you'll start to see things differently through the viewfinder and take great shots more often. Take an extra minute to compose your photograph so that the reason you are taking it is clearly evident. Control your canvas by moving subjects, props, or your angle to add context and see things in a better way. "I love to experiment with composition, especially with photography because you can create a very interesting image out of an ordinary place. I carefully cropped it so that the woman sits off to the left facing the light while including other elements of her room. Notice how the rectangular shapes play off each other, creating an interesting composition." One of the most common mistakes of amateur photographers is placing the subject smack dab in the middle of the frame. This makes a picture more static and less interesting. That's why one of the most popular guidelines in both photography and painting is the Rule of Thirds. Imagine a tic-tac-toe board over your viewfinder and position the subject along one of the lines or at one of the intersections. If your subject fills most of the frame, position a focal point (like those smoldering eyes) at one of the intersections.

Lifestyle and Healthy Living

Introducing X-FACTOR LIFESTYLE MEDICAL CENTRE which opened doors recently in March 2012, offers a unique approach to conventional medical care. This is a General Medical Practice with a difference. Under the caring hand of Dr. Fayruz Sattar, MBChB (UCT), the centre seeks to treat patients with the aim of empowering them to live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives. X-Factor Lifestyle Medical Centre offers the full services of a general medical practice, which includes the treatment of acute and chronic medical illnesses, health screening and general medical check-ups. However, the difference lies in the passion that Dr. Fayruz Sattar has for helping patients understand that “prevention is always better than cure”. She has extensive experience in general medical practice. “I have been practicing for twenty years and in this time I have found that doctors need to impart this message with more enthusiasm and vigour,” she says. Better management of habits such as unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, smoking and stress is essential for optimal health. This all too common cluster of risk factors leads to the development of the chronic diseases of lifestyle, namely: obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and tobacco/alcohol/substance addiction. These disease processes lead to catastrophic, but often preventable results of strokes, heart attacks, tobacco and toxin-induced cancers, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, osteoporosis and many others. These diseases are becoming the leading cause of death in the developing world. Also, for women, particularly those who delay child-bearing due to the practical demands of life, these risk factors contribute towards difficulty in achieving a pregnancy. As part of her special interest in lifestyle interventions in the management of the chronic diseases of lifestyle, Dr. Fayruz Sattar has recently completed three years of study towards a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine.

I have been practicing for twenty years and in this time I have found that doctors need to impart this message with more enthusiasm

It is with this capable background, that in addition to offering a conventional medical service, Dr. Fayruz Sattar is introducing within the practice, lifestyle intervention programmes with a specific focus on weight loss, nutrition, exercise and motivation. “It is my vision to offer a comprehensive service where my patients will receive all the elements necessary for achieving an optimal state of health. I will not only treat and advise patients, but also offer them the necessary support structure and tools required to achieve their goals from within the practice. This includes nutrition plans, exercise programmes and emotional support,” she says.
