A PEEK INTO THE FUTURE – GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS There is an increasing interest in nutrition not only from health professionals, but also the general public. When educating about foods, it is important to raise concerns about the side–effects of genetically modified (GM) foods. As recently as September 2012, a study was published where rats were fed genetically modified corn for two years and developed massive mammary/breast tumours, kidney and liver damage and other serious problems like immune function decline. The extension of evidence from animal studies to humans is accepted practice in medical science. However, we need to understand that rats live only a few years and humans live around eighty years. Human observations of the effects of GM foods are only about 10 years old, so we may still be decades away from knowing its true effect. This is the strongest evidence to date to exercise precautionary measures against GM foods as previous studies declaring GM foods as safe were only conducted for a few weeks, with the longest study being about three months. It is difficult to precisely know how much GM foods we consume since there is no legislation in place for food labelling informing the public of this. Most diets contain at least 10% of genetically modified foods and if you eat processed foods, the chances are that the content is a lot higher. 04 | reCONNECT Magazine | November 2012
Many of us are consuming GM foods from Day 1, as many infant formulae contain GM ingredients! Furthermore, a recent Norwegian study lasting 10 years, found that GM corn products caused obesity. In addition, the structure of the intestines was altered so that it was less able to digest and absorb proteins. This makes the body less able to produce amino acids which are the necessary building blocks for proper cell growth and function. Studies have also shown a strong link between GM foods and cancer, particularly breast cancer. What is probably the scariest implication of GM foods in the diet, is that it has been found that the altered genes found in GM foods are absorbed by the intestine and found in human blood, muscle and liver tissue. The impact of this unnatural introduction of foreign genes into the human body will not be known for another generation or two! Unless we take notice of the evidence from the animal studies we are now aware of that is… Start lobbying for food labelling which identifies GM ingredients! Food-manufacturers are still able to bypass this loop-hole by labelling GM tainted foods as “natural” or “all-natural” as no legislation exists to the contrary! DO WE REALLY HAVE TO WAIT 50 YEARS TO SEE WHAT GM FOODS WILL DO TO THE HUMAN HEALTH AND LIFE-SPAN?

TOP TIPS! It’s time to review your security precautions. As we head towards the travel season, it’s a good idea to take a fresh look at whether your home is as safe and secure as it could be... Walk around your property and identify your possible 'weak areas'. If in any doubt ask your security company or your SAPS Sector Commander to assist/accompany you on this task. It may be that foliage or trees surrounding your perimeter fence are thick enough to hide a person close to your entrance gate. Check that your electric fence is working and check that your gates close effectively and are always locked. Do you have battery back-up in case of electrical outages? Is your electricity supply box outside your property securely locked? Is your gate correctly installed so that it cannot be lifted off its hinges or rails? Instruct your family and staff not to allow any unknown person
onto your premises, no matter their reason or excuse. Identify all workmen, delivery personnel and so-called official suppliers prior to entry. Are your windows adequately burglar-proofed? Do not leave windows that are visible from the road open - even if they are not on the ground floor. Ensure no valuables (or keys) are left close to open windows or can be reached through the openings of security doors. Do you have sturdy house doors and are they locked when not in immediate use? Have you taken special precautions with 'sliding doors'? Is your kitchen door or side door as secure as your front door? Do you have sufficient lighting outside - in your garden, entrances, gate, garage, etc.? (Source: SAPS and CPF - Crime Prevention Tips")

We have now introduced the LED (light emitted diodes) lighting. This product has been introduced into the market about 5 years ago and has taken the world by storm. The savings on power consumption are astronomical and only uses a fraction of what the old 60w incandescent and 50w halogen lamps would use. The incandescent lamp and the halogen bulb will soon be a thing of the past because of their high power consumption. The CFL’s (compact florescent lamp) will eventually be phased out, because it contains mercury and is not environmental friendly.

Keeping yourself safe with LPG Safety What you can do:
• Get to know your gas system, cylinder sizes, single or change-over regulators, where your shut-off valves are located, where the lines T off etc. • Get to know which way is ON and OFF. Much gas is lost due to people who think that the cylinder tap works the same as all taps, it does not. Clockwise is shut / off, anti clockwise is open / on. • Do not expect your gas appliances/systems to be maintained by electricians, the builder, the plumber, the garden boy etc. If a non-certified person works on your system or appliances, you will be held liable for damage caused, by insurance companies. • Check your gas reticulation on a regular basis with a 50/50 mix of Sunlight Liquid and water, if it bubbles you have a leak. • Check washers on the end of the regulator / pigtails and replace at least yearly. • Check gas hose / pigtails for sun damage, squirrel damage or general wear and tear. • Regulators that are older than 5 years should be pressure checked to ensure they are not about to blow. • If you suspect a leak, switch off cylinders and all in line shut off valves, then check the line with the soapy water test. • Get a Fire Blanket (Hobs / Heaters) or a DCP fire extinguisher. • Get your Cadac Cylinders and appliances checked at the beginning of the summer season. • If something goes wrong, don’t panic, the cylinder cannot explode. Turn it off or if there is a fire, cover the appliance and smother the fire then turn off the bottle.
06 | reCONNECT Magazine | November 2012
• Do not use Camping or Cadac type cylinders on top of your electric plate. This is the one instance that is the most fatal if you do not notice your stove-top is on. • Hose may not be more than 2 meters , in all instances of 2meters or longer copper pipe must be installed • Insurance companies are now also asking for Compliance Documents; please ensure that whoever installs you gas supply can supply you with one of these. In all the years we have been in business, we can say that the incidences around gas are negligible. Safety is our concern, my gas delivery team are instructed to check washers, hose, pigtails etc. Please report any concerns you may have to me.

• Supervise constantly: Good supervision means you are able to scan the pool area every 20 seconds and be able to reach the pool in 10 seconds. • Put multiple safety barriers between children and the pool: Install a 1.2 m fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate that has a locking mechanism beyond a child’s reach • Always check the pool first if a child is missing: Child drowning is often a silent death that alerts no one with splashes or yells for help. Many drowning accidents happen when children have been missing for less than five minutes.

LEADING YOUR BUSINESS THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES... Once we come to understand the greatest challenge of leadership to be the ability to lead oneself, the next is the ability to lead your business, family or organization successfully. This journey is not always the best of journeys and often we wonder whether the leadership position and responsibilities cannot just be shifted to someone else. It is through these difficult times that we get to really understand that leadership is not about the corner office with a view or the special parking place.....It is then that we need to know that leadership only has one function and that is to lead those who are looking to you, to a better place....through whatever situation it is they find themselves in. It is also through these times that respect is earned and increased. I suggest that the first thing we need to do through these times is to: FACE REALITY... We need to look at the situation for what it is and not what it was or what we would like it to be....Know that disappointment is that gap between your dreams and where you really are. I suggest that here, we apply the principle of the SCOREBOARD...The scoreboard that is visible and out there at all times. As business leaders we tend to display our scoreboards only during the good times....We need to understand that the benefit of the scoreboard. When we have our eyes on the scoreboard at all times, we are aware of the real situation and we will know that changes and decisions need to be made in order to change the score in our favour. So as leaders having to lead our businesses through difficult times, I suggest that we keep our eyes on the scoreboard and keep it real!
