Emily Howard Kyoto Untitled 1/2/3/4/5 What started out as a silly idea for something to keep me busy during the spring break holidays quickly became a passion project for me. Through this book, I wanted to capture my current impression of Ine, so that 10 years in the future I could look at it and remember what I was thinking and feeling now in my small, oceanside village. I made the book by cutting images from colored paper with a knife, scanning the pieces once I had finished cutting them, and then arranging them into a book through a website. I poured hours and hours into this project, but it was all worth it for the moment I finally got to hold the book in my hands.

Sarugajo and Hachiman Jinja Sarugaji is absolutely my favorite place in Kagoshima. It really is nature’s playground with giant boulders, swimming spots and waterfalls. Hachiman Jinja is the local shrine in Izumi, Kagoshima. It hosts Japan’s largest shrine bell and smallest shrine bell.

I’m originally from Toronto, Canada. I was placed in Izumi, Kagoshima and have been so inspired by my surroundings for past 3 years. I was a full time animator back in Canada, and during that time rarely drew or made art outside of work. Being in Japan, particularly living in Kagoshima prefecture, has made me fall in love with art again. I’m never short of inspiration whether it comes from the places I’m visiting or the foods I’m eating. Through drawing and painting I’ve been able to document my travels and experiences. It’s been truly exciting to be able to share my love for Japan and Kagoshima with everyone.
