INTRODUCTION

About Pune : • • • •

Pune also called Poona, is the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, after Mumbai. It is the ninth most populous city in the country with an estimated population of 3.13 million. The old city part of Pune dates back to the 16th century. There is radial growth around the old city. Along with its extended city limits Pimpri Chinchwad and the three cantonment towns of Pune, Khadki and Dehu Road, Pune forms the urban core of the eponymous Pune. MAP OF KATRAJ

MAP OF PUNE

About Katraj : •

Katraj Is Suburb Of Pune In The Indian State Of Maharashtra, And Within The Jurisdiction Pune Municipal Corporation. Katraj Is Famous For Its Peshwa - era (18th Century) Lake Katraj has high amount of Public attraction due to Rajiv Gandhi zoological park, Bharti Vidyapeeth university, Katraj dairy and huge transit hub for many buses. Katraj is well connected to the southern cities of Maharashtra like Kolhapur, Satara and has good connectivity with southern states of India.

• • •

History of Katraj • KATRAJ

• •

CHRONOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF PUNE FROM 1820-2011 (SOURCE TOWNPLANNING DEPARTMENT )

The Katraj aquaduct which was built in the 18th century supplied water to the maratha empire during that time. The Jain temple was built in late 20th century and one of the major Jain pilgrimage in Pune. Bharati Vidyapeeth a deemed university was established in 1964 is one of Indias top 10 private University located in Pune. Katraj Dhankawdi complex established in 1990 onwards.

REASON BEHIND THE STUDY •

• • • •

• •

• •

Katraj is the entry point of Pune from the Southern side. Thus it is the Image of Pune for people entering from the southern side. But this Image of Pune is not very Well Maintained. Major Chunk of this Area belongs to the Residential Zone. Thus the Commercial Sector is not as very well developed In the heavy rainfall of 2019, a canal wall was damaged as well as due to lack of proper storm water drainage, there was water logging inside houses. There are a number of factories and small scale furniture industries located in a radius of 10 to 15 km near Katraj intersection. Also the continuous development of the areas in the outskirts necessitatesthe import and export of materials and other items from the bypass, thus increasing the number of multi axle vehicles at the Katraj intersection. The intersection also has a main PMPML bus depot, thus making the intersection more congested. Though Katraj is a Transit hub, an intersection of National Highway 4 and State Highway, it is not well developed. Katraj is not Spread out evenly. Certain spaces are very crowded while others have scarce crowd. Heavy vehicles, private buses, public buses, two wheelers , four wheelers and rickshaws, all use the same road thus there is heavy traffic in this area throughout the day. The Katraj Lake which is a Tourist Attraction Point is not very well maintained.

Most Mixed-Use buildings along the Primary Roads: Katraj-Kondhwa Road, 24M. All Development along Tertiary Road is Residential. Major Parking is done on road and not on personal premises. Two wheelers of visitors are parked on the road adjacent to the lake.

Residential Open Space Amenity

Development Plan Of Katraj 2014

Mixed-Use Commercial Canal

There are less stand alone commercial buildings and most of them are mixed-use buildings. The reserved open spaces are not in use. Planned chowk has been constructed. More development is observed around the lake which resulted in its size reduction. Direction of roads has been changed as highway has been introduced from katraj chowk.

• • • • •

Direction of roads has been changed as highway has been introduced from katraj chowk. All the Land is reserved for residential purpose. Some part of land is reserved for Mixed-Use along the Katraj-Satara Road. All the Forest Area is converted into residential area. The development of Katraj is done after 1990

➢ Open gym proposal

➢ Streetscape- street art

➢ Small food hub under bridge with a sitting space where one can also charge their appliances.

ZONE LEVEL PROPOSALS 1.Rehabilitation of Katraj Bus Terminus 2.Rehabilitation of vendors market WHY BUS TERMINAL? • • • • •

Main problem faced at katraj and adjacent chowk is traffic. Improper bus, rikshaw and pedestrian movement are the main causes of traffic at chowk. As bus stop is located near to chowk, due to which other vehicular movement also get disturbed. Due to less capacity of that junction to withhold such major activities also results in congestion. Scope for proposal ,as Development Plan of 2014 proposed bus terminus on site

WHY VENDORS MARKET? • • • • •

Mandai was developed in a organic form near the chowk which itself creates chaotic condition on roads. Pedestrian movement was not in planned and safe manner which affects adjacent road traffic. As it is observed from analysis that Katraj and nearby area is commercially developing, which creates more scope proper market for better traffic conditions. Also by observing current condition there is need to relocate or rehabitat that Mandai from that place to make that junctions chaos free. Scope for proposal,as Development Plan of 2014 proposed Mandai and Market in Katraj
