Theatre and Tragedy
Studying how tragedy was represented in theatre by watching 4 plays from different time periods and regions.
Antigone • Greek Tragedy • Duty vs. Family • State vs. Morality • Asserting one’s own Individuality
Hamlet • Shakesperean Tragedy • Self-actualization • Obligation and Individuality • Renaissance Morality
Blood Wedding • Spanish, 1920s • Social norms • Revenge & ego • Gender Equations
Ghashiram Kotwal • Marathi, 1700s • Power and morality • Revenge • Objectification and greed
KEY Learnings • The role of power in human behaviour. • Different point-of-views completely change who seems right or wrong. • This understanding can be used in provoking the right feelings for the subject matter and thus help us in achieving effective, targeted and intentional meaning-making in our messages.
Storytelling & creating Empathy are vital devices in effective communication.

Typography and Composition
Giving a VOICE to

In the second module of Typography this year, we focused on composition and how it can be used to achieve hierarchy in any text. How this hierarchy can make communication

At the end of this series of assignments, we understood how the visual composition of a text goes hand in hand with the functional aspects such as legibility and emphasis. Playing

existing meaning of the text. Furthermore, the hand-done approach also added to our basic skill set. We also developed our intuitive visual judgment to gauge the

COLOUR The definitive learning from this course was the lateral processes that can be used for generating ideas. How the outcome-issue-innovation triangulation can be useful in justifying a context and synthesising the appropriate solution.
To develop the strategy, rules and gameplay, I experimented with different variations of the rules and objectives of the game. This preliminary game testing was done on illustrator by manually clicking the squares and changing their colour. This gave me an idea of the interaction of the game and the users.

TOUCHING Production Processes 1// Faculty - Bharat Suthar
Printing Processes
Ty p e s o f
PRINTING In this course, we familiarised ourselves with various printing technologies : Relief Printing, Lithography, Offset, Screenprinting, Gravure, Laser Printing Inkjet etc. The primary objective of this theoretical understanding was to enable us to decide the most suitable produciton technique to use for projects.
Paper sizes &
DIMENSIONS
Another significant part of this course was understanding the different paper sizes that are available. We learnt about the two main systems :
ISO sizes
Imperial sizes
This series is based on the scalability of a root 2 rectangle. The base size of A0 is defined as a paper of 1 sq. metre.
This series is based on the British standard of paper dimensions.
These sizes are slightly smaller than the imperial sizes and they follow a geometric progression. Sizes include A0, A1, A3 A4 and so on. B & C series follow a similar pattern.
These sizes are widely available with Printers in India. Sizes include : 13x8 in, 12x18in etc.

In a State of Distress - A project to highlight the problems faced by some Indian states.
INTRODUCTION
SCOPE
In today’s media-dominated environment, where we are bombarded with messages, the narrative is often one-sided and a lot of voices and alternative viewpoints get lost & muff led in the fray.
Every state of India is culturally rich with various visual artforms. And given the extremely heterogeneous country that India is, there are a plethora of socio-political issues that every state faces, be it based on identity-crises, autonomy, basic needs etc.
The alternative and underground media, with their guerrilla-like modus operandi are the only source of hearing the “other” side of the story which is oft-neglected. Graphic Design has always played a key role in bringing alternative stories to light and raising awareness and provoking people to think for themselves. Thus I chose this project to explore how visual communication can be used to understand socio-political issues and express them with a view to evoke empathy and thought.
Research on this project would entail looking at the current trends in media and the way they portray/not portray various states & talking to people from different states. NID being a sort of microcosm of India, I believe this could be used to my advantage in understanding different issues. As the issue-based, narrative part becomes clearer, parallely, I will be exploring the directions I can take in terms of the outcome - borrowing from the states’ visual culture, ways of presenting the illustration; be it a comic book, poster series, or other illustration formats.
