Spring Cleaning on a Budget: 3 Things to Stop Doing Now

While you may have heard running a lemon through your disposal will clean the blades, think twice before trusting that tip. It may indeed clean the appliance, but lemon's citric acid can also corrode the metal, while the peel can damage grinders and clog pipes.

#3 Stop Using Hot Water in the Washer

Hello, May — and spring cleaning season! Save time and money by putting a stop to these three cleaning habits that might be costing you. Vinegar isn’t the be-all it pretends to be. Nor is lemon. Image: @lkathome

#1 Stop Using Vinegar on Wood and Stone From windows to laundry, vinegar is an ecofriendly cleaning powerhouse. But it's also an acid that can damage stone and wood. When cleaning your granite or marble countertops, use mild soap and warm water instead. It'd be a shame to ruin your carefully-chosen kitchen materials. And only clean floors and furniture with madefor-wood cleaners.

This is one time you shouldn't listen to grandma. Today's laundry detergents clean more efficiently than ever in cold water. Even though it might feel strange, winter's much-used blankets will get just as clean on the cold setting — and you'll save money on utilities, too. Caveat: When a family member is sick, or you're washing dirty cloth diapers (or other nasty messes), then listen to grandma. Use hot water mixed with chlorine bleach to kill all that icky bacteria.

#2 Don't Use Lemon in the Disposal

MAY DAY - May 1 May Day, the first of May is celebrated around the world. It has a number of meanings. In many other countries it is a celebration of spring and the coming of summer. It is celebrated with many spring flowers, many of them blooming right in your own backyard. To communist and socialist countries, it is a celebration for the workers. In many countries it is celebrated as part of a one to threeday holiday. Of particular note, it is not a national holiday in the United States, except in Hawaii where it is known as "Lei Day".

NATIONAL NURSES WEEK - May 7-13 National Nurses Week, and a number of specific Nurses Days during this week, provides recognition to nurses for their contributions and commitment to quality health care. It brings awareness to the importance of nurses in the care , comfort, and well being of all of us, and especially our children and the aging, and those in poor health. • May 7-13: National Nurse's Week • May 8: National Student Nurses Day • May 6th: National Nurses Day • Wednesday of Nurse's Week: School Nurses Day • May 12: International Nurse's Day The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition. International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it's the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

POLICE OFFICER’S MEMORIAL DAY - May 15 Police Officer's Memorial Day was created and established as May 15th by an Act of Congress. Police Officer's Memorial Day honors and remembers police officers who gave their lives while on duty. Police officers protect us 24/7 every day of the year. It's a sometimes dangerous job. They know they are putting their lives at risk to make and keep us safe. Police officers know the risks, and accept them. Sometimes, they pay the ultimate price. Please show our respect and appreciation for police officers everywhere...today....and everyday. Ways to participate in this day: • Show appreciation for police officers. • Make a donation to a police officer fund or memorial

• • •

Participate in activities honoring officers who have died on duty. Better still, create a memorial event, if there isn't one in your area. Thank your police officers for a job well done.

ARMED FORCES DAY – May 16 Celebrated the Third Saturday in May, this is simply a day to salute sharply all of the men and women in all branches of military, who protect you and our country. They can be called upon at a moment's notice to perform a risky and perilous mission for freedom and country. They train diligently both physically and mentally, so they will be prepared to prevail in any mission they face. Just how did it all begin? Well, each branch of the military had their own day of celebration. But, on August 31, 1949 then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. President Harry Truman also announced the holiday in a presidential proclamation on February 20, 1950. All branches of the military were asked to celebrate on this day and they complied on the first Armed Forces Day which was held the following year on May 20, 1950.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DAY – May 28 Amnesty International Day recognizes the need to protect human rights around the world. The Amnesty International organization strives to accomplish these goals by providing awareness and recognition of the issues. They work to publicize local and regional problems, and to arouse citizens, governments and politicians to action. Celebrate Amnesty International Day by: • Learning more about human rights issues • Becoming active in human rights causes • Writing your politician on human rights issues • Making a donation

7 Memorial Day Facts You Probably Didn't Know

Today, Memorial Day is synonymous with barbecues, picnics—but the holiday's roots trace back far further than you might have realized. Below, a few facts about the history of Memorial Day, and how it's evolved throughout its 150-odd years.

1. Multiple cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. According to the Library of Congress, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, to be the "Birthplace of Memorial Day," referencing a celebration the town had in 1866. However, other places are known to have celebrated the holiday earlier, and exactly where the first celebration took place remains in dispute.

2. It was originally called Decoration Day. The holiday was celebrated by “decorating” the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and more, hence the name “Decoration Day.” Over time, it became known as Memorial Day.

3. Union General John A. Logan founded the holiday. Although people were already decorating graves of fallen Civil War soldiers in an unofficial way, General Logan codified the holiday. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies

now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he famously said. 4. Memorial Day wasn’t celebrated on the “last Monday in May” until relatively recently. When General Logan officially launched the holiday, he called for it to be observed on May 30. After the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect in 1971, however, it was moved to the final Monday in May.

5. Logan may have chosen May 30 an interesting reason. The date was selected because it wasn’t the anniversary of any battle in particular—well, according to legend, that is.

6. It’s customary for the U.S. president or vice president to give a speech. And traditionally, that speech is delivered at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, the 3rd U.S. Infantry also place American flags in front of Arlington’s over 260,000 graves and niches

7. Originally, only soldiers who had died in the Civil War were honored. After WWI, though, the holiday began to encompass members of the American armed forces who had fallen in any conflict. Courtesy of Town & Country Magazine May 2019
