Regional Director’s Note Greetings Sorors and Happy Holidays! Ten months ago, we ended the 68th Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in Richmond, Virginia, facing uncertainty and even a bit of fear. Little did we know that by the end of the year, we would still be in a season of unprecedented challenges for our sorority, our country and the world. We had many questions and perhaps some skepticism of how we would operate and continue to render “service to all mankind.” Sorors, you have proven that nothing is too hard for Alpha Kappa Alpha women! Although we could not see each other in person, I have felt your love and seen your dedication to service despite the detours we all had to take personally, professionally and in our sorority. We have (somewhat!) mastered the digital platforms that are now the primary means of facilitating our programs and fundraisers, conducting our meetings and staying in touch with one another. Our chapters have thrived! Our sisterliness remains as we have made sure that our less mobile sorors were safe and well. Our concern for our surrounding communities has been steadfast as we have reached out to our community partners as they struggled to help families and individuals in need. We’ve even added new phrases to our vocabulary such as “you’re on mute”! Sorors, I could not be prouder of the way you stepped up to these challenges in a Marvelous way. As the New Year approaches, I look forward to continuing our commitment to doing “a new thing” by making our processes more efficient, our sisterhood stronger, and our communities better. As we prayerfully emerge from the sadness and isolation that COVID-19 caused for so many, let us not forget to embody that same spirit of determination, resilience and resourceful. We’ve already seen what we can do in a global pandemic – watch out 2021! The year has had its highs and lows, and we can all agree that one of the best highs was the result of AKAs L.E.A.D. Witnessing the election of Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris was for so many the joy we needed to feel hopeful about our country’s future. Let us continue to keep the entire administration in prayer as they move forward in service to our country. Many of the year’s lows were reflected in the losses we all felt as a sisterhood with the transition of our beloved past Supreme Basilei Soror Faye B. Bryant and Soror Eva L. Evans, as well as our 4th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Soror Lucille Piggott. Sorors across the region also lost loved ones to COVID-19 and other illnesses. We are our sisters’ keeper, so please keep these sorors and their families lifted in prayer. Thank you sorors for all you have done and all that you will continue to do as 2020 comes to a close. Let us move boldly toward a new year filled with hope for a healthier country, a kinder humanity and a brighter future for so many who have been hurting for far too long. This holiday season, please remain safe and remember that there is a brighter tomorrow ahead if we take the needed precautions. I am blessed and honored to call you my sisters. With love and gratitude,
