Mumbai Transport
What is
Integrated Navigation Services
It is means of conveying passengers and freight by more than one type of transport, for example, rail, road, water, motor vehicle, air, and pipeline. Integrated transportation services are necessary when there is no direct connection between points of departure and arrival or when integrated services are more advantageous than a single type of transport. Transport directly affects many aspects of national, State and local government policy and service provision. State and local government each have a key role in transport planning, maintaining transport infrastructure and delivering transport services in the city metropolitan region and other areas. An integrated approach to transport planning is a positive way to influence the planning and provision of transport systems towards more sustainable patterns.

About the project
Project Brief
The aim of the project is to create a coordinated visual identity and information delivery system which is scalable, adaptable to various formats of Mumbai transport and delivered through all the mediums including static signs to the latest systems of widgets, apps and digital information media. As well as aiding efficiency, signage and information graphics can help create a distinctive sense of place. The benefits are many, ranging from helping to build a favourable image, and giving a visible expression of the Mumbai transport environment, to providing cohesion between the transport modes including all their touch point like buildings, platforms, zones and interchanges, vehicles and communicating information to diverse users.

Looking
Around the world To make an integrated transport system for Mumbai we looked at what other cities around the world have done for the development of their public transport system. The below mentioned cities have been selected on the basis of their remarkable work and wide acceptance in the field of integrated transport system
London 1) Well categorized information. 2) Well Planned design Guideline. Hong Kong 1) Multi lingual information 2) Pop ups for necessary information Portland 1) Precise information 2) Make it simple Moscow 1) Systematic information 2) Associate complex information to simple symbols Dubai 1) Look around the world and make it big The MMRDA project

Data
Analysis
The following questionnaire was distributed among the working class people (Age 15 - 50) of Mumbai who travel daily form their home to office and other destinations.
45% People use more then two modes of transport daily to reach their destination.
The purpose of this questionnaire was to generate insights on : 1. How people plan their daily journey / travel. 2. How do they reach a particular destination. 3. How does the available information help them reach the destination, and lastly. 4. Whether the initiative has a demand or not(do they believe that it will facilitate them ). The collected information was then analysed to draw inferences.
More then 54% people think they don’t get enough information on how to change the mode of transport.

• 55% People can not travel in unknown areas of Mumbai without having enough info. • A lot of people ask other people for their destination or the next train/ next bus. • Rickshaw is the escape from public mode of transport. • Traffic flows from north to south in morning and south to north in the evening. • People can walk long distances. • There are a lot of people who don’t have adequate information to change the mode of transport. • People are clueless about the navigation and Information on transport mode in Mumbai.

Design elements
Element 1
Colour
Choosing the right colour for a particular mode of transport is very important because colours play a very important role in recognising a set of information and relation, for example when people were asked what colour would they like to associate Ferrari with, a lot of people said Red. Over here we are trying to assign colours to each and every mode of transport so that after a while people can see the desired mode of transport faster as they can easily relate to it.

Element 2
Typography
One of the best ways of communicating an idea is to have a good typeface. By good type face I mean, the one that is readable, easily seen and can be easily understood. For this project we have selected the following typefaces 1) Frutiger 2) Gill Sans 3) Helvetica All these fonts are specialized for signages. That means their • Leading • Tracking and • Kerning are adjusted for maximum and comfortable viewing. I am looking at a typeface that can be easily used in both electronic media as well print media. The colour of this typeface will be black. The better the typeface is, the faster the reading (communication of thoughts) happens and so on.

Devnagiri Type face Since Mumbai is a bilingual City I required to include Devnagiri typeface . It must have the basic characteristics of : Modern (for a cosmopolitan crowd) • Simple yet dynamic • Clarity • Quick grasp Based on the selection of the devnagiri typeface we will select the English typeface so that they match perfectly.
Element 3
Graphics
Concept 1 Isometric look While making the concepts for the graphics the idea was to keep it simple and self explanatory. The information that can be accessed quickly and all at once. If the whole visual has to be accessed in one glance it has to presented via isometric drawing. Following icons were created for the art work from this inspiration.

Concept 2 Top view look When it came to mass viewing of the information we had to present the information in the simplest way possible and that’s the time when it occurred to me that the same set of information that was presented in isometric view can also be shown in a planned view in a much simpler and better way .

The identity
Logo and the naming
While working on this system the main question was, is identity necessary and should there be a series of iconography to design within this communication system ? The answer is YES, under a recognisable identity the series of icons used across communication collaterals will become standardized. The logo for the proposed identity should be such that it should represent movement and speed. It should nicely balance in with the curves of the identity. While working on the identity it was decided that the logo will be italic and will belong to sans serif family.

It is very important that the system also has a name. A name that suggests the purpose of the project/ the system since for a project aimed at the masses in informative nomenclature would be more suitable then a thematic one .The following names were decided for this project MITS : Mumbai Integrated Transport Service. MAPS : Maharashtra Aekikrit Parivahan Seva. MINS : Mumbai Integrated Navigation Service. Out of these three “MAPS(Mumbai Aekikrit Parivahan Seva) was selected as the final name as it goes well with the purpose of the project and is short for Maps which is the primary source of information.

Element
To give important information like • Transport mode logo • Stop name • Companies concerned We had to create design element that could act as space for all these information, also it should visual look similar to the identity. Out of the two options the second option was preferred as the curve clearly falls in sink The colour of the design element will be taken from the identity with which it is being associated with, and the right side will have contrast colour combination.

After a lot of thinking it was decided that we would also include auto rickshaw stand as a part of design development process as we are dealing with the communication of the information. The priority is to look at the communication part of the visual.

Conclusion
Mumbai is one of the largest city of India. With a population of over 11 million it is also one of the most populous cities in southern Asia. It has more then 4 modes of transport in any major part of the city. With new projects like mono rail and metro, mumbaikars can now travel more conveniently. So based on the research and the data analysis we concluded that there is a need for making the Mumbai transport systematic more integrated using properly designed and structured information.
