“Sisters function as safety nets in a chaotic world simply by being there for each other.” Let us remember to love one another and act as each other’s safety net. There are times when we each are going through an individual struggle and things seem to spiral out of control.

Remember all we need is someone to catch us and reassure us that all will be ok. I charge each of you to reach out to one another and let them know you care.

Basileus Speaks Thank you so much to everyone who showed their support at Pink Goes Red event on February 5th. It was a great success. I know my abs loved the workout. I’m elated that we enjoyed our time belly dancing but we must not stop. Let us remember that African-American population tends to have higher rates of obesity and diabetes, which puts us at greater risk for high blood pressure and heart disease. Sorors, take a serious effort to improve your overall eating habits by learning about heart-healthy foods, and how to prepare them. And of course, if you’re not already active, get moving. Our month of programming doesn’t stop there. I am excited about our Founders’ Day coming up February 28, 2016 at Receptions – Loveland. This is our moment to celebrate our history. This year marks the 108th anniversary of the oldest black women’s greek letter organization. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has over 200,000 members in over 950 chapters located in the United States, Caribbean, Germany, Korea, Japan and most recently UAE. Our history is black history and I look forward to seeing each of you at our Founders’ Day celebration ready to celebrate this illustrious sisterhood. Thank you for being involved. Sisterly love, Soror Whitney B Gaskins Basileus, Sigma Omega Chapter

On January 18, 2016, sorors participated in our first Community Impact Day, In recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day of Service.

Have you committed to your personal 50-Week Challenge, Target III: Financial Literacy? This weekly savings plan encourages fiscal responsibility, which, by years end results in a useful sum of money. February 5, we implemented Target II: Health Promotion Community Impact Day, Pink Goes Red for Heart Health. Our 2015 activity was belly dancing with instructor Mindy Johnson at Iron Sharpens Iron in Evanston. While our focus was physical activity we also received information about the effects of heart disease and stroke, which greatly impacts our community. When you arrive at Chapter meeting be sure to grab a post-it note and declare your Target IV Acts of Green℠ Pledge. This will remind us about our responsibility to recycle and encourage us to protect our environment. Don’t forget to mark your calendar and make your reservation online at Eventbrite for the 2016 AKA Sigma Omega Founders' Day Celebration, February 28, 2016 at Receptions, 10681 Loveland Madeira Road, Loveland Ohio 45140.

About Our Programs Target II: Health Promotion | Denia J Redford, Chairman February is Heart Health Month; however, everyday should include the question, “How can I keep my heart healthy?” & “How can I help someone else?”

Engage in physical activity everyday, park your car further away from the entrance and walk in, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator you can even pick your favorite song and dance, dance, dance. These simple actions yield big benefits, such as weight-loss, which lessens work on the heart by decreasing blood pressure and cholesterol all of which reduce the risk of heart attack. Reduce sodium intake by choosing fresh/frozen vegetables, look for low or no sodium canned foods, use fresh herbs to season cooking, use vinegar, lemon juice, onions and low sodium sauces rather than high sodium and fat sauces. This will also lead to decreased blood pressure and cholesterol both of which, ultimately, reduce the risk of heart attack. Stop smoking…now, better yet don’t start. Smoking tightens blood vessels causing a heart to pump harder to get blood out to all parts of the body. Lessening this squeeze and push allows the heart to relax and work more efficiently reducing the risk of a heart attack. It saves those in the general area from secondhand smoke too. We all know the mental and emotional stresses of life can cause our hearts to work harder than usual. Set aside “me time” in your day to relieve your mind and your heart. Take a nap when possible, walk with or talk with a friend, read, write or speak with a counselor, clergy or health professional if necessary, but don’t ignore your stress. We all should learn Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Take a field trip to the local American Red Cross office or ask about available education at your church or school. If you need help in any area, please contact your physician for guidance. Some things are out of our control, but young and old, black and white, male and female, we all have a heart that needs TLC.
