General A. INTRODUCTION The A&K Hand Fed Corn Cutter is a self-contained unit, designed for the cutting of corn from cobs for whole kernel pack. The efficiency of any piece of equipment depends upon the manner in which it is installed, operated and maintained. With this in mind, careful consideration should be given to the installation. B. INSTALLATION The corn chutes, feed bins, or conveyors should not be fastened to the cutter. Make sure the cutter is level. There is a water jet provided for spraying a small amount of water on the knife head when cutting whole grain corn; this keeps starch from accumulating on the knives and helps keep knives free. Also, there is a water jet provided for spraying a small amount of water on the head drive gear. This keeps the gear cool and clean. The connection for the water line is on the left hand side of the base unit. See CC500-1 Page 5. The A&K Cutter is a very high speed machine and therefore it must be bolted securely to the floor through four holes provided in the pedestal. The floor must be of ample strength to support the machine. Make sure the wiring is correct. Refer to the electrical section of this manual. Before operating the machine check all adjustments.

BE SURE ALL BOLTS, SCREWS, HYDRAULIC FITTINGS AND NUTS ARE TIGHT

1

Be sure the operator has read and understands the safety information in this manual. The machine must be thoroughly cleaned, lubricated and adjusted before operation.

A.

Push the start button to start the machine.

B.

Pick up corn from the corn chute, feed bin or conveyor. Turn the ear so the small end will be first to enter the machine. Lay the ear on the feed trough chain and the chain will carry the ear into the cutter feed rolls.

Don’t ever put your hand into the cutter feed opening. This could cause personal injury. Don’t wear long or loose sleeves or loose fitting clothing. C.

Both hands can be used to feed the machine.

D.

Don’t piggy-back or lay end of one ear on another. This will cause a jam at the entry to the cutter head.

E.

Pieces of ears or ears 3” (76mm) or less in length can cause jams.

F.

In operation, if the water sprays are used, be sure they are turned on before feeding corn to the machine.

G.

Use the cob release lever to clear jams. Never attempt to clear a jam while the machine is operating . Shut it off. Never use your hand or metal objects to clear a jam. Use a soft wooden stick to clear jams that can’t be be cleared with the cob release lever.

H.

Don’t leave the machine running unattended.

General Safety Information Be sure the following safety instructions are read, understood and become a part of daily practice when operating or maintaining A&K equipment. Help prevent personal injury and/or property damage. 1. Do not attempt to operate any machine until you understand how it functions. If you are not certain after studying the service manual, contact the A&K office for assistance. 2. Never operate the machine unless all guards are in place and do not attempt to make any safety device inoperative. 3. Never start a machine until you are certain that all personnel and foreign objects are clear. 4. In cases where a machine cycles automatically, be sure everyone is aware of the automatic cycling. 5. Check all safety switches and other safety devices daily to be sure they operate. 6. Never perform maintenance or repair work until you are sure the power is turned off at the main control panel and cannot be turned back on without your knowledge. 7. Do not operate or perform maintenance or repair on a machine when taking any kind of drug, sedative or when under the infl uence of alcohol or overly fatigued. 8. Never, never reach into moving parts to clear a jam of any type. 9. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry of any kind that could get caught in moving parts. 10. Keep the floor around the machine clean and free of obstructions and water. If water is necessary at the machine, be sure to wear shoes that will not slip on wet floors. 11. Always wear safety glasses, hard hats, hearing prot ection and any other personal protective equipment in areas that require them. 12. Pay strict attention to all caution, warning and danger signs.

3

13. Always use A&K recommended spare parts. Special grade bolts should be replaced with special grade bolts. Learn the standard bolt grading system. Always replace expansion bearings with expansion bearings, etc. ALWAYS PRACTICE SAFETY, if in doubt, check it out first.

3AR & #3 CUTTER HEAD 7

Cutter Head Adjustment Adjustment for Minimum Knife Opening – The purpose of the minimum knife opening is to be able to adjust the knives to the smallest opening which is necessary for the size cobs being run. This reduces the movement of the knife mechanism. Be sure the minimum knife opening does not permit the knives to strike each other. Reference is made to Drawing CC700-000  Remove (Item #2) CC700-008 lock key.  Turn outer plate (Item #2) CC700-007 clockwise to release.  Loosen the six screws (Item #4) pan head screw #8-32 x 3/16.  Open the knives to full opening.  Close knives in towar d the minimum stop until the right size opening is obtained.  Tighten the six screws (Item #4) pan head screw #8-32 x 3/16.  Replace outer plate (Item #4) CC700-007 and turn counter-clockwise and replace lock key (Item #2) CC700-008.

FEED ROLL DRIVE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM HAND FEED CORN CUTTER - 2006

DRAW N BY:

JANOS

P A RT NU M B ER

CC06-008A

Lubrication When the cutter is put into initial operation, inspect the grease lines carefully to make sure tubing and fittings have not been damaged in shipment. The A&K Cutter is provided with a single point lubrication system that will lubricate all the main bearings on the cutter. When grease is pumped into the system through main zerk, each bearing in turn receives a measured amount of grease. The lube block has a cycle indicator. The pin in cycle indicator moves IN and OUT as the piston in that section moves. The pin movement indicates this section of the block is cycling. Machines having centralized systems must be lubricated every four (4) hours. The lubrication system must be cycled two (2) times to insure an adequate supply to each bearing. If high pressure is required to cycle lube block, it could mean a blockage in the system. Continued high pressure could cause damage to the grease line or gasket between the sections in the block. The cutter head assembly is lubricated by a 12 ounce (340g) gravity feed bottle oiler and should be set to provide six (6) drops per minute to the head. An FDA approved oil should be used in this gravity oiler

Trouble Shooting A.

JAMS 1. The line up between the feed rolls and the feed chain may be incorrect, causing the ear to enter the feed rolls off center. The chain may be either too high, too low, or the trough sides may not be properly centered with the cutting head. 2. The knife opening is not large enough. 3. Knives may be dull. 4. Be sure that the corn is fed into the machine small end first. 5. Check feed roll gauging linkage. Eliminate all lost motion and adjust to suit the ear size being cut. 6. Check the feed roll shafts to make sure they are centered with the cutting heads. 7. NEVER remove jams from the cutter with anything but a piece of wood, and ONLY AFTER THE MACHINE IS STOPPED. 8. Jams may be relieved by moving the spreader arm located on the left hand side of the cutter. Moving this lever will open knives while machine is running and aid in releasing the jams.

B.

HEADS FREEZING OR STICKING 1. This is usually due to a starch accumulation in the head bearing and heads. Heads should be removed and thoroughly cleaned with clean cool water and a soft brush. It is usually necessary to take the head apart and thoroughly wash to remove any starch accumulation

C.

DEEP CUT 1. The gauging linkage may need adjustment. 2. The head may be starching up, causing the knives to open too hard. 3. The knives may be too short or dull to do good work.

74

D.

BROKEN COBS 1. Feed roll shafts may be out of adjustment, not centered with the cutting head.

E.

DEEP CUT ON ONE SIDE 1. Feed trough adjustments may be out of line, causing the ear to enter the head crooked. 2. Feed roll may be out of line vertically or horizontally with the cutting head.

F.

RAGGED CUTS 1. This may be caused by the corn being damaged on one side before it gets into the cutter itself. 2. Knives may be dull or there may be broken knives in the set. 3. One or more of the knives may be sprung. 4. The knives may not be a matched set.

G.

CHAFF IN CORN 1. Too many hulls or chaff may be caused by the feed roll spurs digging into the cob too deeply. This is usually caused by the tension being too tight. 2. The corn may be coming through the cutter damaged. If so, the cutters will cut the damaged kernels off, not only making a very ragged looking job, but a great deal of chaff will end up in the cut corn.

H.

VIBRATION 1. The Cutter is a very high speed machine, therefore it must be bolted SECURELY to the floor. 2. The floor must be amply strong to support the machine without vibration. 3. Because of the high speed of the drive shaft of the machine, an out-ofbalance line shaft may transfer vibration to the cutters. 4. Machine should be checked carefully for dry or tight bearings.

75

I.

HEAD BEARING WEAR CLEARANCE The easiest way to inspect for excessive wear is to check the clearance between the cutter head bearing and the cutter head gear. Disassemble the cutter head and check the clearance between the cutter head bearing and the cutter head gear with a feeler gauge. If the space between the cutter head gear and bearing exceeds more than .03, the wear is excessive enough to produce irregular cutting. The cutter head gear, cutter head bearing and cutter head shell should be replaced.

76

Clean up A.

CLEANING 1. As soon as the run is finished, whether it is noon, evening or during the night, machines should be washed down at once with cold or lukewarm water. 2. The heads should be removed. 3. The knives should be removed from the head and both cleaned thoroughly. Some canners submerge the head in a tank of water and leave it there until it is ready to start the next day’s run. However, this is not necessary if the heads are thoroughly cleaned so that no starch remains in them to set up while they are not in use. 4. The machines may be steamed down if so desired but steam should NEVER be put directly on the knives or on the machine before all of the corn and corn starch is washed off.

B.

CLEANING AND STORAGE 1. When season’s run is completed, clean the machine as usual. Then, wash and steam them down and allow them to dry thoroughly. Machines should then be gone over carefully. 2. The heads themselves should be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned. When reassembling, we suggest the use of white vaseline instead of oil. Wrap the heads carefully and store them in a dry place. 3. The machine should be checked over carefully and a list of any parts that will be needed prior to the next season ordered promptly.

77

Knife Honing 1. A&K recommends all FMC cutter knives be honed on an A&K Knife Sharpener. When the Knife Sharpener is properly used, it will provide a consistently sharper knife while maintaining the correct angles of the knife. NOTE: Honing stones and knives should be kept clean at all times when sharpening. Proper honing of cutter knives is very important to the successful operation of the corn cutter. Improperly honed knives will not only cause irregular cutting but also wasteful hours of corn cutter adjusting. No corn cutter adjustment will compensate for an improperly honed knife! 2. Hand Honing For hand honing, A&K recommends using a Carborundum 3183 stone and one hard Arkansas stone. The knife should be honed on the backside and the stone should contact the knife. After the knife has been honed on the backside, it is only necessary to remove any burrs on the inside 8 degree angle with the Arkansas stone. Never Hone The Knife on The Inside Angle! While stoning the knife on the backside, be sure to stone the knife evenly from the curved heel. If the point is honed more than the heel, it will shorten the knife point unnecessarily and thereby shorten the life of the knives. CAUTION! The inside bevel lid is not to exceed 1/32. Care should be taken to hone the backside of the knife only on those portions indicated in hand honing. Burring should be accomplished in the same manner also. The honer insures constant honing of the knife at the same and correct angles after it has been set up. The honer jigs are adjustable and have stops. These jigs and stops should be set to provide the correct knife honing angels as directed. 3. When the knives have been used and rehoned during the average season, they are usually slightly out of shape and should be returned to A&K factory in Eugene, Oregon for regrinding. The service charge for this procedure is very reasonable and most canners ship all their knives to A&K every year immediately after their pack is finished.

78

4. Knives cannot be reground indefinitely, as there is a definite minimum length which will give satisfactory results. Before shipping your knives to have them reground, it is recommended to carefully inspect the length of the knife blades. Knives that are returned to A&K are inspected, and if found to be too short, they will be returned to the customer without regrinding. Therefore, transportation charges can be saved if you check the length first. 5. New knives are 1-3/16” long. If, after frequent use, they are less than ¾” long, they are very apt to do poor quality work. Therefore, A&K will not regrind knives less than ¾” long unless specifically requested by the customer. The customer will assume all risk as far as satisfactory operation is concerned.
