Are You At Risk?

According to a recent German study, a popular class of heartburn medications might raise the risk of dementia in seniors. These medications, called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), include Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.

Research found that seniors 75 or older who take the medication regularly had a 44 percent increased risk of dementia compared to seniors not using the drugs. The study found only an association rather than a causeand-effect link, so additional clinical trials are needed. Until then, doctors should take care to prescribe PPIs as directed to avoid inappropriate use, and patients can wean themselves off PPIs and reduce acid reflux by eating smaller meals, avoiding chocolate and caffeine and remaining upright for a few hours after eating.
