Although modern technology makes everyone’s life easier, when your computer hits the fritz, it can be utterly debilitating. Too often, users are quick to call in professional help for simple problems that can be solved more easily than you might think. If you’re a new computer user or just aren’t very tech savvy, the following are a few basic first steps to try before you make an appointment with a specialist.

Reinstall The Operating System

Ever wish you could reset your car odometer to 0 miles or transform that favorite outfit into exactly what it looked like o the rack? With a computer, you can do just that. If other methods aren’t working, you can reset your computer back to the day you bought it by reinstalling your operating system (OS). All broken files, viruses and corrupted data will be eliminated in the process. Just remember that because the reinstall fully resets your computer, all your bookmarks and files will be erased— so be sure to back up all your important documents and photos before reinstalling your OS.

If there’s one particular program that is giving you trouble by constantly crashing or slowing to a crawl, consider uninstalling that program and then downloading it again.
