INTRODUCTION The chosen architect for the research is from Veritas Architect and the name of the architect is Ar. David Mizan Hasyim. . David is half Malaysian and half American where is father is Malaysian and his mother is American citizen. David has four siblings including himself. He was born on 31 May 1961. He was raise in the city of Kuala Lumpur. To be exact at his home town is at Jalan Yap Kwang Seng. In education his attend his primary school at Good Sheppard primary school and afterwords attend St.John high school that is 1.5km away from Good Sheppard School. David favorite subject in school are Physics, art and mathematics because of the way his think is always in logic sense. . What actually make he realize want to be become an architect are been told to us are, he used to built thing as in play with Lego. Before he moving to Jalan Yap Kwang Seng David and his family are rental a house in Petaling Jaya and to be exact at Seksyen 16 until he was 12 years old before moving to Jalan Yap Kwang Seng. Being such an inspirational person, he has been leading the firm since founding it in 1987 and has been a role model in his team. He truly believes in listening to his clients as well as responding to their needs. Before he started his career as a professional architect, the educational background of Ar. David Mizan is truly inspiring in the most simplest way. He actually graduated his B(sc) in Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1983. . Ar.David then further pursue his dreams by going staight away to Harvard University Graduate School to continue his studies and within 3 years later, graduated his Master in Architecture. . His early influences to be and architect are surprisingly not from his parent or uncle but from a book. The book is title are The Fountainhead and was written by ANY RAND. What inspires him about it was how the book talks about heroism of being individual, importance of personal intregrity, disipline, self-confidence, the hierachy of the self above the community and the individual above the masses. . He claimed that he never had a boss throughout his career except when he had to an internship and worked for a few months in the US and Malaysia. In the year 1983 he had work with BEP Arkitek in Malaysia for an eight months internship whereas in the year 1984 he continued with another three months internship at Voorsanger & Mills Architects in the United States. Having gone through internships, it made David realized that he could never be a good employee because he disagreed with his bosses. During the world economy downturn in the year 1987, a year after he graduated, he took a leap on deciding to start a company on his own. His first office was situated in Kampung Baru, . It was a small place above a motorcycle workshop, he avoided his clients to come visit him at the office because he was feeling embarrassed and afraid that he might chase the clients away by welcoming them a bad office faรงade

appearance. His first break through project was Gasing Heights Condominium at Petaling Jaya. Gasing heights is a six towers, eight hundred units of condominium which he got it partly by relationship and partly by design competition.

Architecture Theory The project that I analysis that is design by Ar. David Mizan Hasyim are the W Hotel and Services Apartment in Kuala Lumpur. The W KL otel and Residences project is located in the Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle district, considered Kuala Lumpur commercial, shopping, and entertainment hub, on Jalan Ampang Street. Located just northwest of the famed Petronas Twin Tower , the project site is 5192 square meters of the land bounded on the north by Jalan Ampang, to the west by the bank, wisma BSN and the the east and south by lots designated for future development. The Project is a mixec use tower that consist of resedential and hotel component, The residentail progeam includes unit apartment hat is between one bedroom and four bedroom apartment a roof top ameity level with swimming pool, a four level below grade parking desk and a ground floor entry lobby. Both partial and full view of KLCC can be seen aroud the hotel. The W Hotel consist of three major programmes components 1. Residential 2. Hotel 3. Ballroom.

Artist rendering of W Hotel.

The inspiration of Ar. David got to design the W Hotel is from the way he been grown up in the jungle city of Kuala Lumpur. The inspiration come from the Klang river itself. On how the narrative flow of water form the river is the main CONCEPT of the W Hotel. The CONFLUENCE of NARRATIVE is the ideal concept that Ar. David incorparate to the design layout of W hotel. Ar. David relate the the mateial of the building with the site contact as in the W Hotel is darken in the scheme where the rest of the sturcutre are in

lighter scheme.

The Narrative concept of W Hotel & Services Apartment.

The plan of the W Hotel & Services Apartment The way the plan being designed as it look as narrative as possible. What Ar. David try to achieve are the narrative flow of circulation of the interior building. The function of it is to relate to the concpet that he been developt. It to make the interior assessable to public easily. Below is the sketches of Ar. David Mizan Hasyim on how the layout of the floor plan of the pool area is going to be design in a way to follow the concept of the Narrative.

CLIMATE As for the climate issues at the building Ar. David design the hotel to sustain to Malaysian tropical humid weather. The diagram below are showing the windrose chart of the W Hotel and Services Apartment. During dry season the wind is strong at SSE and slowest at the WSW. During the wet season the windrose chart show the the most windy is on N and the least windy is at S.

Windrose Diagram. Because of Malaysia are tropical humid country with the sun orientating toward the building will be block using the faรงade that been design by the Ar. David and his team. The way the plan being designed as it look as narrative as possible. What Ar. David try to achieve are the narrative flow of circulation of the interior building. The function of it is to relate to the concept that he been develop. It to make the interior assessable to public easily. The window of the building are been orientated not to faced the evening sun so that the area around the building can be cool down. The area that are facing the evening sun are been putting a shading device that are a louvers sort of to minimize the hotness of the evening sun from penetrated the building throughout. The Residential apartments and Amenity level, and Hotel suites and rooms, just below, occupy the tower portion of the massing at the northern end of the project site.

DISCUSSION The Project is a mixed use tower that consists of residential and hotel components. The Residential program includes approximately 354 apartment units ranging between one bedroom and four bedroom apartments, a roof top amenity level with swimming pool, a four level below grade parking deck, and a ground floor entry lobby. The Hotel program consists of a ground floor entry lobby, above grade parking deck, sky lobby with restaurant and lounge spaces, conference center, a grand ballroom with pre-function and support spaces, amenity level with spa and outdoor swimming pool, and nine hotel room levels with an additional level of large suites with terraces. The project will be constructed of reinforced concrete. The building envelope will be a custom unitized curtain wall specified to achieve high building standards and will project a distinctive image in accordance with such an assembly. While most of the surrounding buildings are lighter in color and tone, this proposal is darker in color. The darker façade will distinguish the building from the surrounding context, establishing itself as an icon in Kuala Lumpur’s skyline. In concept, the building’s façade acts to unify multiple program types and scales into a single architectural expression. The façade at the location of the residential units is scaled to the height of two floor levels, organized in a staggered pattern. This articulation allows the wall to adapt to multiple unit layouts, while maintaining a consistent and ordered appearance from the outside. The size of the glass openings are set at a comfortable residential proportion allowing for expansive views of the surrounding context. The façade at the location of the hotel units is scaled to the height of three floor levels providing the W Hotel a more vertical and distinctive quality, while still maintaining the character of the overall building. The glass is setback at the amenity floors providing exterior colonnade spaces, allowing for landscaping and exterior habitable spaces. Backlit channel glass cladding is used above the entry lobbies to activate the façade along the street. The lobby entrances are transparent and inviting with the use of customized glass storefront systems. Channel glass is also used at the façade of the ballroom pre-function, the ballroom service areas, as well as the shuttle elevator tower. At the location of the shuttle elevators, the translucent channel glass will be back-lit allowing the silhouettes of the moving elevator cabs to animate the façade. The remaining ground floor exterior is clad in stainless steel, responding to the neighboring Petronas Towers.

CONCLUSION What Ar. David and his team have created a building structure that are have an relationship to the owner. What he usually ask the owner before continue to design the building are, he will ask a personal question to the client as what type of family and how the client want the design and so on. With that mighty idea from the client he begin to design to satisfied the client need and also he will overpromised the client to make an impression. But also by the end of the project is done the client are satisfied with the work and the idea that have been poured by the Ar.David an the Veritas group. Another cool fact about the W Hotel are the way the facade pf the building been design is related to the site context of the Petronas Twin Tower. The vertical and horizontal line of the facade is to compliment the facade of the Petronas Twin Tower. Anothrer phase to construct the W Hotel and Service Apartment are the relation of the hotel to the Petronas Twin Tower as a rule that is such the new building that going to contruct must not be taller than the Twin Tower. So at the of it this are the analysis that I did for the study of the W Hotel and Services Apartment in Kuala Lumpur.
