POINT LINE PLANE The synopsis of this assignment was to use the principle of abstraction, photography and model making to produce an end goal of a 3 dimensional model. The process was done through a series of iterations where we first tested our photography skills and captured points, lines and planes. Then we used the principle of abstraction to extract the most important objects in our photos. Then for our final iterations we used our previous designs to create a 3d model from what we found through abstraction and photography.

Photography is shown during this iteration. The photos are positioned in an abstract way where there aren’t any threes of the same point, line or plane in the same column or row.

These are drawings of what i abstracted from the photos that were took. These were the things that I believed were the fundamental blocks of each picture.

This is an abstraction of the previous abstraction drawings. The task was to combine the 3 abstraction drawings from the previous iteration and make a new drawing.

The practice of lineweights and the principle of light and shadow were conveyed in this part of iteration process of this assignment. We had to extract different tones and shadows from the pictures and draw them.

SITE,PATH AND THRESHOLD This exercise deals with the site being the most important and centralized force of the exercise. We had to demonstrate the process of excavation. With using excavation, we had to make a site that contained 2 small spaces and a large gathering space. The material that was used was cardboard, and since we were excavating, whatever we cut out from the cardboard we must use that and nothing else. Think of it as there isn’t any more cardboard left in the world and we had to make a site with just what we were supplied with, which was 9 layers of cardboard with the dimensions being 18 x 24.

PLAN AND SECTION DRAWINGS This exercise was primarily focused on the programs and the drawings for our excavation exercise. We had to draw 4 sections and 2 floor plans. For the sections we needed 2 long ways and 2 short ways. For the floor plans, they consisted of the first floor and the second floor.

OCCUPIABLE WALLS This exercise was all about space. We were given the task to create 2 apartment spaces for 2 world renowned scholars, an environmental scholar and a social science scholar. The space we were given to create the apartments were extremely small. We had to fit two apartment spaces between 16 feet wide parallel walls. The measurements of the parallel walls were 84 feet long. The parallel walls divided the apartments from the garden and the plaza. For this exercise we had to involve the site’s surroundings, the garden and the plaza and find a way to involve that with the apartments in between the two parallel walls. We also had to include drawings (plans, sections and elevations) and a detail model as well.

LIVING LIGHT, HOUSE For our final project the deliverables for this exercise was that we had to make a building that included 30 units of housing, at least 2 classroom spaces, a recreational study space and also a climbing wall. We were also tasked with creating a core, that included an elevator and 2 fire stairs. We also had to include a lobby that had a security desk, bathrooms and a seating area. This was the first exercise that included square feet so it was kind of confusing taking that into account. We were also required to create a site model that our site would sit on. Our site could not had to fit in the dimensions of 75 feet x 100 feet, no more.

This is my first study model. It was extremely quick to make. The purpose of this study model was just to give me an idea of how I was going to plug everything together. I used the method of plug and pull.

Grids The deliverables for this assignment was that we had to choose one of the precedents that were listed by the professor. From there we had to make an analysis and extract all of the geometrical features of the front elevation of the building. From that we had to use that analysis and create 4 sides that are not similar to the analysis made. The principle of abstraction was employed to create the 4 other sides. We had to make it into a 3d model using glue and wooden dowels.

The precedent that I chose was the Eames House, Ray and Charles Eames, Pacific Palisades, CA, 1949
