AKRITI GOEL PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN STUDENT

Having lived most of my life away from home, I adjust well to new surroundings and this has also instilled in me a willingness to talk to new people. As a student of public space design, I aim to understand how people act and interact in public spaces and how the spatial elements affect their behaviour. I have also come to learn that most spaces hold emotional value for people. This helps me integrate both, the emotional and the functional aspects of any space that I design.

CO- LIVING A co-living space had to be designed for a ‘Square Factor Competition’ keeping in mind that benefits both- the people living in it and the startups running it. It was aimed at giving the inhabitants a homely feel alongside maintaining a proper balance between private and open spaces. Moreover, we had to make the best possible use of the area provided and accomodate as many people as possible. AREA OF PROJECT: 930 square metres SKILLSETS USED: AutoCad, Sketchup, Pcon Planner, Photoshop GROUP MEMEBERS: Khushi Monga, Sriranjani Suresh

The ground floor has been designed as the main space for social interaction amongst the residents. It contains some spaces on the ground level and the rest of the spaces as mezzanine floors which can be reached using steps.

Three types of rooms were made available to the residents of the space. All of them form part of the ‘Residential Block’. CY

The task was to design an inclusive public open space as an interface between the gated community and the surrounding residential layout that breaks the visible and invisible boundaries that are created by these gated communities in the given site. AREA OF PROJECT: 1365 square metres SKILLSETS USED: On site research and analysis, Hand Drafting, Photoshop

ACCESS TO THE SITE

Dead end ahead (Pedestrian access to Dua Layout) Longer route to main road

INCLUSIVITY IN COMMUNITY

2 Minutes walking distance to the main road

It is a peaceful neighbourhood. Even though there are college students living in 2 of the buildings.

Drainage is well planned and water logging does not take place. Drains run under the stone ramps leading to the houses, no stairs/steps have been used. KEY: PRIVATISED ROADS GOVERNMENT ROADS WALKING DISTANCE FROM SITE WIND DIRECTION SUN DIRECTION

08

DISTANCE OF THE SITE FROM THE CENTRE OF THE CITY

It is a safe neighbourhood. Gates are usually notlocked at night although individual doors maybe locked. There is police patrolling at night

I have designed a playground for children and a multi-purpose hall, to facilitate daily interaction between the two communities. The playground is focused on ‘Natural Play’ and would also help develop motor skills as well as sensitize them towards nature.

There are other facilities like an outdoor blackboard, donated books, ice-cream and juice centre as well as a life size chess board to add to the functional value of the space. The entire space has been made wheelchair accessible.

09

This area can be used as a seating area by the parents/elders watching over their kids playing. Can be used as an exhibition space to put up stalls at the benches.

10

This hall can be used for cultural programmes and events like talent shows for children can help bring the 2 communities together.

This is a life size chess board in the space as an attraction. Chess is a game that can be played by people of all ages. The pawns have been made into sitting stools as well. The checkered tiles may be used to play hopscotch, ‘staapu’ or tic-tac-toe amongst other games.

REDESIGN AND LIGHTING FOR A RESTAURANT The task was to redesign the famous ‘Stacking Roof House’ into a restaurant, whilst keeping the basic structure of the building intact. We had to attempt to incorporate all spaces a restaurant would need alongwith maximising seating for the same.. Furthermore, I did the lighting design for the restaurant with proper calculations and measurements. AREA OF PROJECT: 290 square metres SKILLSETS USED: AutoCad, Excel, Autodesk Maya

REDESIGNING FOR ACCESSIBILITY The redesigning of Udupi Grand at Dairy Cross, Yelahanka New Town was proposed. The aim is to make it accessible by all and at the same time make changes in the services and systems aspect as well to increase efficiency of functioning of the space.

16

the old, children etc. • To understand the exclusions that take place on site and make them inclusive through creativity and logic.

AREA OF PROJECT: 135 square metres SKILLSETS USED: Observational research, Hand Drafting, Photoshop

RESEARCH QUESTIONS How to make the process of choosing and ordering food easier for all? (I noticed multiple people facing exclusion in this area.)

OBJECTIVE • To redesign a fast food restaurant that is accessible by most of the public, taking into consideration the special requirements of the disabled,

Will making Udupi Grand accessible by all affect the business in a negative or a positive way? ( for example: reduced seating )

17

Railing at ramp and stairs provided at different heights for convenience of usage by wheelchair users and children. 18

Ramp has been designed using the 1:12 Ramp Slant Ratio.

Dry dishes, mostly the popular ones are showcased and numbered according to their number on the menu. Helps people not knowing the language choose food items. The eye level has been kept in mind while designing the menu which can also be read in braille.

Some counters will be wihout the upper glass case, to allow children access to the food. So that they may carry it for their families.

DANCE SCHOOL The concept of my dance school is that of open areas being integrated well with covered areas. It is a Bharatnatyam school designed to make students feel close to nature, learn from their gurus and obtain the necessary life skills and knowledge. The design has been built keeping in mind the climatic conditions of Bengaluru. The design has been made keeping the wind direction in mind and the inspiration for verandahs, platforms and lining trees has been taken from Sangath and Kalakshetra. AREA OF PROJECT: 1500 square metres SKILLSETS USED: AutoCad, Sketchup, Vray, MS Word, Photoshop, Illustrator

SITE ANALYSIS

21

• Dance studios have iron oxide flooring to provide the ideal surface for dancing. • Dance studios have been placed on the ground floor and lined with arches and jaali brick walls to allow for proper ventilation and lighting, whilst preventing excess solar radiation. • Acoustic privacy has been achieved through optimum spacing and usage of an adequate amount of trees. • Corridors have been used as vestibules and circulation spaces which connect the studios as well.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

• Classrooms and faculty rooms have been placed on the first floor because both these spaces will not involve loud noises and hence it would not disturb the dance studios below. • A sick bay has also been provided keeping in mind that a dancer can suffer both major and minor injuries occasionally.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN

• The second floor has the canteen, the library and the Audio- Visual centre.

MUSICAL KIOSK - ADALU Built using durable materials, this kiosk is an inviting place for people of all ages willing to try their hand at music. This also helps those underpriveleged people access music instruments who cannot afford them. Placing this in the park, adds another activity that the park could be utilised for. Also, this provides for any activity which is less strenous, unlike most of the activities which the park is otherwise used for. AREA OF PROJECT: 14 square metres SKILLSETS USED: Site Analysis, Hand rendering and drafting

24

25

26

This kiosk is structurally formed by putting elements of 4 different instruments together, the back wall consists of 20 bamboo flutes (venu) placed strategically to allow wind to blow through. A partition in the middle is formed completely of strings. A side wall consists of multiple insult drums for people of all heights, the entrance steps leading into the kiosk are like piano keys which play music each time you step on them.

PRODUCT DESIGN VERTEX TABLE Designed with a 90 degree angle to allow it to fit the corner of any bedside, this table is glow in the dark to help locate your belongings at night. It was our first time working with wood and the aim was to try and incorporate other different materials along with it. GROUP MEMBERS: Drishti Bajaj, Sonal Aggarwal

PROCESS

DUAL-AXIS LAMPS Made using wood and metal, these lamps can be placed vertically or horizontally. In both positions, light forms interesting patterns because of the perforated metal sheet that has been used. LED strips have been placed in circles inside the lamp facing each of the two sides to evenly distribute the light.

PROCESS

EFFI - A wayfinding app Effi, is a wayfinding app. It aims at providing navigational support to people with motor and mobility issues. It acts as an aid to find routes that suit one’s preferences in the best way possible.

We aim to enhance the experience of ageing for an individual by simplifying everyday tasks and finding ways to help them cope with a new environment.

PROJECT STATUS: Work-in-progress GROUP MEMBERS: Akshata Murdeshwar, Maitreyi Bhatnagar, Drishti Bajaj, Atharva Dyanmote

ADVANTAGES

• Works as an add-on app for google maps. • Helps you decide your route on the basis of ease and comfort. • Helps you choose special routes incase you are physically handicapped to minimise obstacles and effort. • Provides special assistance and 24/7 response incase of emergencies. • Initially works using the broad data base collected. • Personalises the app for each user according to their post trip rating. 30

LOOPHOLES

• Is it imperative to use this application? • There need to be different ‘effort’ approximations for individuals with different set of issues. • How comfortable will all users be with smartphones and their interface? • How scaleable is it? • How ‘in accordance’ is it to solve the problem at hand?
