Dental Plaque: Explained

Dental plaques or dental caries is the base of all the dental problems or diseases, before we start about dental plaques and its effects. Let us know what dental plaque exactly is:

Dental Plaque:

It is s soft gelatinous mass, a bio-film (a group of micro-organism that forms cell and stick over a substance).It is either transparent or white in colour, which sticks to the surface of our teethes.

How does it form?

When you eat any food, there is certain leftovers still stuck in our mouth, so the leftover food particle and the saliva mix together to form a plaque. There is a chemical reaction between the leftover food, the saliva, bacteria’s and carbohydrates. Every food contains carbs in them but high sugar food like chocolate, cakes etc. have more carbs thus they contribute more in building up of plaques.


Effects on teeth: Plaques get stick to your teeth since it is in the similar colour that of our teethes, it becomes difficult to detect it, but we can feel it through our tongues if we brush them against our teethes. Still they are quite a task to know. They are the root cause of all evils on our teeth. 1: Plaques take 12 days to turn into tartar. 2: Plaques are soft and can be easily removed after brushing, flossing etc. but tartar are difficult remove. 3: Plaques causes gums bleeding, helping germs to attack gums inner tissues and teethes. 4: Weakens teethes and loosens the gums. 5: Creates cavities. 6: Plaques helps Gingivitis to take place, which in turn forms Periodontitis if left untreated.


Prevention and Treatment: Plaques is 100% preventable just by simple techniques like: 1: Brushing teeth twice a day. 2: Flossing teethes. 3: Visiting dentist regularly. 4: Maintain good hygiene of mouth.
