Words with Ta-Ku Written by Katie Burgess Q&A by Carlo Piva & Justin Plant

Native Perthian Reagan “Reggie” Matthews is pricking up ears all over cyber space. Operating under his pseudonym of Ta-Ku and challenging genres with his unique sound, he is swiftly accumulating an impressive global fan base for a primarily self-produced artist residing in the world’s most isolated city. The recently released ‘Re-Twerk’ is a good metre mark for the growth of Ta-Ku’s exploration of sound; receiving a few mixed reviews but ultimately breaking new terrain for electronica based music. From an invitation to the Red Bull Music Academy in 2008, to now launching ‘Sunday Records’- a label intended to provide a platform for friends and local talent, Ta-Ku appears to be on something of a fast track to success. You can check out what the fuss is all about at; sunday-records.com We quizzed him on where he is at now; soundcloud.com/takugotbeats What/ Who inspired you to produce music?

Really it all started with a long time friend of mine going halves in some Stanton STR80 turntables with me back in around 2005. We would collect records and at that time we were well into hip hop and rap music. Of course Dilla is really the one artist who inspired me to actually start making it. How would you describe your style/sound?

It’s really hard to say, especially this year as I have really tried to experiment with as many different styles as I can! I’m having a lot of fun playing around with different genres although I would say that the style I’m most known for is my soul music.

Has living in Perth played a part in your creative process? You have done edits and remixes of Chet Faker, Hermitude, TZU and Flume just to name a few! Who else would you like to What do you think of Perth’s music scene? Definitely! Perth is an amazing place to live. It isn’t remix or work with?

Well I have quite a few other remixes coming up, and if you keep an eye on my SoundCloud, you will see them dropping soon! I would LOVE to officially remix someone like Grimes! She is so unique.

the musical mecca that Melbourne, LA or Berlin is, but it is still a very inspiring place and the music scene is thriving. The isolation tends to help musicians or artists really blossom here, as there is a certain yearning to really excel in whatever we do due to being so far away from everything else.

You provide a lot of your music for free on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. For instance this week you allowed everything from your Bandcamp to be downloaded for free! What is your What are you doing when you are not producing? I’m just a normal dude with family, work, friends etc. I motivation to do this?

Personally I love free music! So whenever I get the chance, I give away my latest release or my back catalogue. It’s just as a way of saying thank you for You recently dropped volume two of 50 days for Dilla, what supporting me. So whether you’ve bought my music in the is it that makes Jay Dee so special? past, or you’ve told someone about my music, or even if Every single song of his has soul... so much soul! Whether you just stream my music via sound cloud, I’m honestly so it’s in his bass line, his sample choice, his chops, his snare thankful for anyone taking the time to check me out. or his high hat – I’ve never witnessed music with such personality! Incredible producer.

work a 9-5 in health insurance by day and produce to keep sane. I also love anything visually beautiful. Big fan of design, fashion, photography etc Finally, what’s up next for Ta-Ku?

The next month and a half is very exciting. I have a split 12” dropping with Suff Daddy and an EP with U.S blog ‘Live For The Funk’. I’ll also be working on my debut full length too.
