MANUSCRIPT CENTRE THE CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF ISLAMIC MANUSCRIPTS The Manuscript Centre within Al-Furqan was established in 1988, aiming to preserve and study the Islamic manuscripts, which constitute a particularly important part of the Islamic heritage. Islamic manuscripts are estimated to number 3 million, covering subjects as diverse as the Qur’an, prophetic studies, jurisprudence, logic and philosophy, as well as mathematics, botany, biology, poetry, literature, art and crafts.
The Manuscript Centre within Al-Furqan is committed to mobilising every available expertise to preserve these manuscripts and to restore their content to the cultural mainstream. The most important events and activities carried out by the Centre are:
Nowadays, these manuscripts are not the exclusive preserve of Arab and other Muslim countries, or even of countries with large Muslim minorities. Manuscripts are found extensively in Europe, the Americas, Japan, Australia and Africa. There is hardly a country that does not possess some manuscripts produced under under the aegis of the Muslim civilization through fourteen centuries of Islamic history. This enormous treasure, the most important intellectual and scholarly heritage in Islam, is -in many areas- in danger of being destroyed through social upheavals, political conflicts, natural causes or simply lack of proper care. It is therefore of the utmost importance that it should be documented as soon as possible, and that every attempt should be made to preserve it for posterity. It is also important that its treasures should be made available to the world. The Manuscript Centre has as its aim the documentation and preservation of the Islamic written heritage. It is pursuing this aim principally through its work in surveying, cataloguing, editing and publishing Islamic manuscripts.

THE WORLD SURVEY In 1989, the Foundation set up a research project to investigate as comprehensively as possible the collections of Islamic manuscripts existing worldwide. Scholars were identified and commissioned to carry out the survey in 106 countries. The project resulted in The World Survey of Islamic
Manuscripts, which is the most wide-ranging survey to date, both in terms of the countries and the languages covered. The Foundation made history in the field of Islamic manuscripts by successfully completing the Survey, an ambitious academic project of a collective bibliographical work that brought together the world of manuscripts from almost every part of the world. The objective of this project was to conduct an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of these collections. The survey aimed at filling gaps left by previous bibliographies and similar works, and at the same time worked to bring together and update most of the information included in them. It oers a guide to collections of Islamic manuscripts and details of how to access them. www.al-furqan.com

After a series of intense meetings with consultants and academic councils in Istanbul, Madinah, and elsewhere inside and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, spanning a period of 4 years, work started on the Encyclopaedia.
During the first conference organised by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, Sheikh Hamad al-Jasser gave a keynote speech at the Foundation’s launch, in which he presented presented some of the most valuable manuscripts of Makkah and Madinah, and urged the Foundation to undertake the task of producing an encyclopaedia of the two great cities. This encouraged His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, the Chairman of the Foundation, to fulfill his long-held dream of publishing the Encyclopaedia of Makkah al-Mukarramah and Madinah al-Munawwarah.

THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MAKKAH AL-MUKARRAMAN AND MADINAH AL-MUNAWARRAH The main focus of the Encyclopaedia series is to bring to light and document the many roles played by both holy cities of Makkah and Madinah in various fields, such as the natural environment, the social, economic, cultural, scientific, religious and political life, as well as the architecture, planning and the sources documenting the history of both holy cities, based on an array of resources, such as books/publications, historical documents, photographs, maps and recordings. The aim of the Encyclopaedia project – as described by His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, the Chairman of the Foundation – is to acknowledge the merit and grace of two of the most holy sites on Earth, the city of Makkah, the sanctuary of the House of God, and Madinah, the city of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), upon the Islamic civilisation and humankind. The project also highlights the profound role that these two cities played in supporting scientific and cultural initiatives throughout the centuries, as the origins of Islamic civilisation and its source of enlightenment The first volume of the Encyclopaedia was published in the

HOUSE OF KHADIJAH
BINT KHUWAYLID IN MAKKAH AL-MUKARRAMAH A Historical Study of Its Location, Building and Architecture
A BRIEF ON THE BOOK The book on "The House of Khadijah (may God be pleased with her) in Makkah alMukarramah" is an architectural and scholarly study on the house belonging to Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may God be pleased with her) in the noble city of Makkah. This is the house where the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself lived; where he married his wife, and where all but one of his children were born, may God be pleased with them. Here he (peace be upon him) received God’s revelation, and from here he undertook his famous Night Journey and Ascension (Isra’ and Mi’raj). It is on this account that al-Tabari and others stated that the house of Khadijah (may God be pleased with her) is the "best place in Makkah after the Sacred Mosque".

AL-FURQAN ISLAMIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION
PARTICIPATION IN BOOK FAIRS Since 1988, the Foundation has taken advantage of the opportunities provided by book fairs, to communicate directly with the researchers, intellectuals and academics who share its aims and help to realise its goals in the fields of preservation and publishing studies on Islamic manuscripts as well as on maqasid, while fostering its relationship with other readers who have a more general interest in its manuscript editions and other publications Over the last 25 years, Al-Furqan has taken part in approximately 40 international fairs throughout the world, concentrating its eorts on fairs held in Arab-speaking countries, such as Cairo International Book Fair, Sharjah International Book Fair, the Algiers International Book Fair and the Casablanca Book Fair. To maximise its presence as some fairs, strengthening the bonds between the organisation and those interested in its work, the Foundation has not simply restricted itself to displaying its publications, but it has also organised a series of public lectures and seminars on various aspects of Islamic heritage and civilisation.

AL-FURQAN ISLAMIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION
LIBRARIES MAIN REFERENCE LIBRARY IN LONDON The establishment of a major Islamic studies reference library of printed material to support and enhance its various research projects in general, and the cataloguing, study and editing of important Islamic texts in manuscripts in particular, is one of the most important scholarly achievements of the Foundation. Founded in 1991, the Library’s main objective is to uphold the Foundation’s mission, by enhancing access to the Islamic heritage resources. Among these, priority was given to a comprehensive collection of printed catalogues of Islamic manuscripts from countries all over the world, and to important primary and secondary sources in the field of Islamic studies. The library is intended to serve students and researchers of the Islamic heritage, specifically those undertaking research into Islamic manuscripts.
THE MAKKAH AND MADINAH CENTRE’S LIBRARY It is important to mention that beside the Foundation’s main Library in London, the Makkah and Madinah Centre housed in the Jeddah branch of Al-Furqan, in Saudi Arabia, possesses specialised and fully automated collections of printed books, periodicals, manuscripts, documents, reports and university theses. The Encyclopaedia Library has now been fully catalogued and is functioning as a reference library supporting the work of the Encyclopaedia of Makkah and Madinah, one of the Foundation’s leading projects.
