Ambos son miembros del panel de nominación, un grupo que durante las próximas semanas jugará un papel clave en el establecimiento de la nueva Junta Escolar del distrito que es el octavo más grande de los EE.UU. Gonzales, presidente y CEO del Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, dijo que el papel del panel de nominación es “asegurar que la junta escolar final consista no sólo en los mejores candidatos posibles, sino también que sea una junta diversa e inclusiva que refleje a la población que nuestras escuelas sirven”. Debe ser un reflejo de los niños que van a la escuela”, dijo Camarda, directora de alianzas para el Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware y miembro de la junta directiva de Nueva Esperanza, que estableció Esperanza College y Esperanza Academy Charter School. “Estamos trabajando en formar una junta mucho más sensible, que entienda mejor las necesidades de la comunidad y que también sea responsable, ya que son de nuestra comunidad”, afirmó Gonzales acerca de los beneficios de establecer control local. Camarda dijo que el control local también significa responsabilidad y rendición de cuentas por latinos, inmigrantes y otras comunidades subrepresentadas en la ciudad. “Ha sido demasiado fácil decir que no tenemos el control”, aseguró Camarda a propósito de los últimos 16 años de gobernanza de la Comisión de Reforma Escolar. Y añadió que la nueva junta “significa que tenemos el control, y eso significa que tenemos que realizar y hacer lo que sea para asegurar que nuestros niños estén educados”.

ace un año, cuando el presidente Trump estaba obsesionado por convencer a todo el mundo de que el tamaño de la asistencia a su juramentación había sido “más grande” que la de Obama en 2009 (pese a que las imágenes de archivo mostraban exactamente lo contrario), fueron las mujeres de este país las que le dieron una lección de grandeza. Lo que mundialmente se conoció como la Women’s March fue la reacción de millones de mujeres (y algunos hombres, hijas, hijos, madres y padres) que declararon el 21 de enero de 2017 su decisión indeclinable de resistir y oponerse al primer presidente abiertamente “pussy-grabber” de Estados Unidos. La protesta mundial en contra del machismo y la misoginia encarnados por Trump fue ante todo una manifestación política de millones de mujeres que llenaron las calles como nunca antes se había visto y que prometieron seguir haciéndolo hasta cambiarle el chip a una sociedad que todavía le rinde culto a “los padres fundadores de la patria” pero que carraspea y

voltea hacia otro lado cuando se denuncia el acoso sexual, el abuso de poder, la iniquidad salarial… la violencia de género. Pues bien, esa marcha espontánea de 2017 es ahora un movimiento social –como acertadamente lo definen Jessica Weiss y Eulimar Núñez, periodistas de Univisión (link is external)– con vocación de poder. Las etiquetas #MeToo y #TimesUp demostraron que no hay casos aislados cuando se trata de violencia de género. También demostraron la necesidad de combatir ese fenómeno sistemático de manera masiva, en las redes sociales, en las calles, en las oficinas y en las urnas.

UNA MARCHA

Filadelfia no es ajena a esa realidad. El sábado pasado fue uno de esos días que evocan la llegada de la primavera. No por el clima que hizo, sino porque un mar de pancartas y gorritos rosados se tomó el Benjamin Franklin Parkway y lo convirtió una vez más en escenario multicolor de protesta social. Si hay una cosa más linda que el famoso bulevar, esa es el mismo Parkway lleno de gente con letreros de todos los tamaños y todos los idiomas. Se vio un poco de todo: desde carteles que hacían un llamado para que Trump sea sometido a un proceso de destitución, hasta los que exigían una cosa tan elemental en una democracia real como el respeto a la diversidad. También hubo los que no se ahorraron calificativos que palabreaban las recientes declaraciones racistas del mandatario hasta los que reivindicaron el valor político y social de tener vagina. Miles de mujeres, blancas, negras, latinas, mestizas, gordas, flacas, jóvenes ancianas, ciudadanas, inmigrantes, documentadas e indocumen-

tadas asistieron a la cita; todas marcharon hacia una especie de mismo destino: ¿Las elecciones presidenciales de 2020? Quizá sí, quizá no. En todo caso, sus presencias fueron testimonios del compromiso. Y cuando el compromiso es multitudinario, como sucedió este sábado, la indignación adquiere un tono de alegría; la rabia se vuelve fiesta porque entre todas surgió una especie de camaradería que las convenció de que ninguna está sola, de que todas importan. Entre las miles de consignas, una fue preponderante: la que llamaba a votar en masa y con enfoque de género. Es que no hay otra opción. El precedente de la elección de Trump es un argumento de fuerza que para quienes se reunieron en el Parkway, que exige un cambio de rumbo y la participación de todas y todos. Por eso la consigna de este año se pareció más a la de una campaña política que invita a votar por candidatas –ninguna en específico– que se identifiquen con la causa y se comprometan con la lucha feminista. Elecciones como la de Rebecca Rhynhart – la primera mujer contralora de Filadelfia que destronó a un hombre con exceso de confianza y prepotencia– es apenas una muestra de lo que pueden lograr las mujeres (y los hombres) si se organizan y participan en todos los escenarios de la vida pública de la ciudad. La segunda marcha de las mujeres fue una muestra de que los ánimos de indignación siguen calientes y de que son suficientes para llegar con fuerza a las elecciones legislativas de noviembre. ■ Para ver más noticias locales visite nuestra web

Llegó la hora de inyectar un poco de sentido común a la batalla contra la drogadicción En Pensilvania se han malgastado miles de millones de dólares para frenar las muertes por sobredosis en las últimas décadas.

n situaciones desesperadas hacen falta medidas desesperadas. A principios de los años 90, la desesperante realidad de que las muertes por drogadicción en Filadelfia superasen de largo las muertes por homicidio obligaron a un político local a tomar una medida aparentemente desesperada: estudiar alternativas a las ineficientes prácticas llevadas a cabo hasta el momento para librar la guerra contra las drogas y terminar con el crimen, el caos y las muertes vinculadas a este fenómeno. La iniciativa, planteada por el entonces concejal municipal John Street, era de gran sentido común, pero sólo recibió reprimendas. Los opositores a Street denunciaron su propuesta de estudiar otras opciones, como legalizar las drogas o proveer drogas a los drogadictos, con el fin de reducir los crímenes cometidos para conseguir opiáceos. En 1990, el Philadelphia Inquirer publicó una editorial que, más allá de ensancharse contra Street, encapsulaba todas las voces de rechazo en contra ese estudio, desde la policía hasta el clero. “Legalizar las drogas representaría una devastadora admisión del fracaso”, decía la editorial, ignorando READ IN el hecho de que la guerra contra las droENGLISH gas ya era de por sí un fracaso devastador, NEWS.com/OPINION en términos de su capacidad para detener el consumo o uso abusivo de drogas. La situación vuelve a rozar la desesperación este año, teniendo en cuenta que el número de muertes por sobredosis en Filadelfia ha alcanzado las 1,200 -en comparación a las 907 ocurridas en 2016 y a las 702 en 2015- lo que ha llevado al alcalde Jim Kenney a proponer una medida desesperada: crear una red de lugares seguros para el consumo e inyección de drogas en la ciudad, con el fin de evitar las muertes por sobredosis. La propuesta de Kenney, aplaudida por algunos y abucheada por otros, es una réplica de medidas similares adoptadas en otras ciudades europeas, y que han sido efectivas para reducir las muertes por sobredosis. Una editorial reciente del Inquirer apoyaba la propuesta de Kenney. ¡Qué diferencia puede lograrse en dos décadas! ¡Qué diferencia en la demografía puede lograr un cambio en las muertes por sobredosis! La cifra de muertes por sobredosis entre la población blanca de Filadelfia es el doble que entre los negros, y un 50% más alta que entre los latinos, según datos de la Alcaldía.

Street, hoy profesor de la universidad Temple, dijo que las autoridades han aprendido mucho sobre las ineficiencias de la guerra contra las drogas desde los 90, aunque todavía existe una despiadada indiferencia hacia este asunto. “La gente se sigue muriendo, pero nadie quiere admitir los fallos”, dijo Street, exalcalde de Filadelfia, durante una entrevista la semana pasada. Uno de los fallos que las autoridades de Pensilvania siguen cometiendo es negarse a legalizar la marihuana -curiosamente, una sustancia que ha sido probada como beneficiosa para el tratamiento de la adición a los opiáceos. En marzo de 1983, el hermano de John Street, Milton, entonces senador del estado de Pensilvania, propuso la legalización de la marihuana como un método para aumentar la recaudación de impuestos y reducir el racismo en la guerra contra la marihuana dirigida a las minorías. La propuesta de Milton Street para legalizar la marihuana generó un ridículo rechazo por parte de sus colegas legisladores, la policía y el clero. El año pasado, el auditor general de Pensilvania propuso la legalización de la marihuana como un método para recaudar más impuestos y ayudar a solventar el grave déficit fiscal del gobierno del estado. Interesante constatar, pues, que tanto Milton Street como el Auditor General proyectaron recaudaciones fiscales de más de 200 millones de dólares anuales con una posible legalización de la venta de marihuana. El rechazo a la propuesta de Street robó a las arcas públicas más de seis mil millones de dólares en recaudación fiscal, además de miles de millones adicionales gastados en la persecución policial de la posesión de marihuana, que no es precisamente la más peligrosa de todos los opiáceos. La semana pasada, el senador de Pensilvania Sharif Street, sobrino de Milton Street e hijo de John Street, se unió a un grupo de legisladores y activistas que defienden la legalización de la marihuana- alegando los mismos motivos que su tío. La familia Street conoce el camino correcto hacia una eficaz política de drogas, mientras otros se desvían en detrimento de la sociedad. ■

urante los últimos 12 meses hemos visto cómo la estigmatización de la comunidad hispana en Estados Unidos se ha transformado en el pan de cada día. Las persecuciones internas, amenazas contra las ciudades santuario, el aumento de las redadas o la suspensión del DACA y el TPS para los ciudadanos centroamericanos han sido tan sólo la punta del iceberg de las políticas migratorias de una administración que insiste en hacer del inmigrante su chivo expiatorio. Esta realidad supone no sólo la radicalización de posturas racistas y xenófobas por parte de quienes ahora llevan el mando del país, sino también la necesidad de analizar la participación de la comunidad latina en la política nacional. A finales del 2016, la población latinoamericana en Estados Unidos se veía representada por tan sólo el 1% de los funcionarios electos, a pesar de ser la comunidad con el crecimiento más acelerado en todo el territorio nacional (sin tomar en cuenta la población puertorriqueña). Según datos de la National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO), actualmente alrededor de 6,100 Latinos han sido elegidos para representar a sus comunidades en los órganos legislativos y gubernamentales, a nivel municipal, estatal y nacional, y su conglomerado se estructura “desde la base hacia arriba”, como explicaba el editor de la revista PODER, José Fernando López, en su columna para el Huffington Post hace algunos años. Sin embargo, la candidata demócrata no obtuvo el mismo apoyo de la comunidad latina que tuvo su predecesor Barack Obama, quien durante el 2008 recibió el apoyo del 67% de los latinos, mientras que en el 2012, esa cifra aumentó al 71%. Asimismo, durante la era Obama, algunos funcionarios latinos electos intentaron distanciarse de las trincheras demócratas y trazaron una trayectoria distinta, como fue el caso de Jaime Herrera Butler en Washington y Raúl Labrador en Idaho, a quienes López describe como “republicanos que han asimilado la cultura de manera diferente a la comunidad hispana”, al igual que el fenómeno Marco Rubio,

quien logró ponerse a la cabeza del GOP con estrategias más conservadoras. Pero el escenario en el 2018 es distinto. La comunidad latinoamericana necesita con urgencia líderes que no sólo representen los ideales de un partido que los apoya, sino que identifiquen las necesidades de las comunidades que finalmente los elegirán, promoviendo la heterogeneidad del entramado social estadounidense no como un elemento político, sino como una realidad inevitable. El deber de nuestros líderes políticos es defender nuestros derechos como ciudadanos en el país, pero el reto se encuentra en definir las estrategias. Una parte importante de la población estadounidense que hace eco de los postulados de Samuel Huntington (cuyo libro El Choque de Civilizaciones y la Reconfiguración del Orden Mundial parece ser la Biblia de la Administración Trump) sobre el divisionismo y el peligro que supone el aumento de la población hispana en el país; la nueva mirada política necesita precisamente desmentir eso, demostrar que la cultura inmigrante nada tiene de colonizadora y tirar por la borda finalmente tantos años de estigmatización para poder acercarnos de verdad al Sueño Americano. n Para más noticias nacionales visite nuestra web

¿Quién puede creerle los cuentos a Trump? Anoche, martes, Donald Trump pronunció su primer discurso del Estado de la Unión, y porque tengo que entregar mi columna al periódico los lunes, no me fue posible reportar sobre el mismo. No es que me importe mucho.

a verdad es que estoy seguro de que no me perdí gran cosa. Después de todo, no importa lo que haya dicho, no se pueden tomar en serio las palabras de alguien que, según el Washington Post, hasta el 10 de enero había dicho 2,000 mentiras. No es por gusto que lo bautizaran popularmente como el “mentiroso en jefe”. Y no tengo una bola de cristal por lo que no puedo saber cuál es el mensaje que ha elaborado Stephen Miller, el extraño neo-nazi que le escribe los discursos a Trump, para que su jefe lo lea en un teleprompter. Pero me atrevo a predecir con certeza ce estar a punto de cercar al propio presidente, así como a absoluta que sus palabras no pueden haber tenido mucho sus secuaces. En realidad, no parece que el anciano residenque ver con la realidad y, consecuentemente, que su discur- te de la Casa Blanca tenga mucho de lo que enorgullecerse. Otra cosa de la que estaba seguro cuando escribí esta coso rozó la verdad solo de forma marginal. El candidato más improbable se había hecho con la llave de la Casa Blanca, después de una campaña basada en la división, el racismo y la promesa del resurgir nacionalista en los estratos sociales que se habían sentido relegados por administraciones anteriores. Muchos culparon de esto a los dos períodos del gobierno de Barack Obama, al liberalismo que parecía haberse instaurado en la economía nacional y al resentimiento acumulado por años en la población blanca menos educada. Pero para la comunidad latina, el peligro era inminente: un muro fronterizo, la promesa de que el país “volvería a manos de los estadou-

nidenses” y la amenaza contra los programas de inmigración, suponían que el gobierno de Donald Trump hablaba en serio cuando catalogaba al hispano de “bad hombre”. La retórica de campaña convenció a muchos otros de que la causa del desempleo, la violencia y la recesión económica era la alta tasa de inmigración, caracterizando al hombre hispano e inmigrante de enemigo nacional. Durante sus discursos, Trump aseguró que el primer problema era de carácter fronterizo, cuando decía que “hemos dejado nuestras fronteras abiertas de par en par, para que cualquiera entre, y para que las drogas fluyan a niveles sin precedentes”. Así garantizaba el candidato el argumento principal para la construcción de su anhelado muro fronterizo que, según pregonaba, “será un arma muy efectiva contra las drogas y el crimen”. UN ARMA NUEVA: EL ACOSO

Medios nacionales comenzaron a reportar un aumento en la retórica anti-inmigrante dentro de las comunidades, que hacía eco de la campaña agresiva y violenta del ahora presidente. Sus primeras medidas se aplicaron de manera inmediata tan pronto se inició el mes de febrero del 2017, según reportaba la oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE). Ésta acababa de iniciar una serie de redadas a nivel nacional para detener alrededor de 680 personas que poseían condenas previas por violaciones a la ley, como bien aseguró el entonces secretario de Seguridad Nacional, John Kelly. Las condenas “incluían, pero no se limitaban, a homicidios, abuso sexual agravado, agresión sexual de menores, actos lascivos con menores de edad, libertades indecentes con un menor, tráfico de drogas, violencia, asalto, cargos por conducir bajo influencia o cargos por porte de armas”. Si bien el ICE no especificó en ese momento si la naturaleza de ese 75% de arrestos contemplaba todo el espectro de criminalidades, varios grupos activistas denunciaron la escala y la sincronización de las redadas que incluían “daños colaterales” como la detención arbitraria y la caracterización racial en las calles de las ciudades. Y es que la orden ejecutiva presidencial para la deportación de “inmigrantes criminales” permitía la deportación de individuos “bajo cualquier cargo”. Durante estos 12 meses, AL DÍA ha estado siguiendo de cerca casos de deportación que demuestran un cambio radical en las nuevas medidas migratorias de la Casa Blanca, donde familias se han visto separadas y amenazadas por cargos tan sencillos como multas de tránsito o incluso por ningún cargo en lo absoluto. 12 / ENERO 31 - FEBRERO 7, 2018 / ALDÍAnews.com

A Trump se le podrá llamar ahora “el acosador en jefe”, pues sus mecanismos de terror obligan a las personas a pensárselo dos veces antes de cruzar la frontera. Tales fueron los casos de Guadalupe García de Rayos, Armando Páez, Rafael, Sonia y su hija con parálisis cerebral, Liliana Cruz, e incluso el de Ramón Ruíz Ortiz, cuya comunidad apoyó abiertamente a Trump durante las elecciones presidenciales. Todos ellos compartían un trasfondo parecido: habían venido al país hace mucho tiempo, habían creado un hogar, trabajaban, pagaban impuestos y no habían cometido ningún crimen. Pero para el presidente, sus promesas y su ideología van siempre primero. A un año de su investidura, Trump ha cumplido con casi todas sus promesas: ha puesto el financiamiento de su muro como moneda de negociación fundamental en todos sus proyectos legislativos, ha aumentado el financiamiento de los oficiales de inmigración, ha aumentado las redadas y la detención de inmigrantes sin récord criminal, ha intentado cancelar el financiamiento a las ciudades santuario, intentó bloquear el flujo de ciudadanos musulmanes al país, ha intentado suspender la inmigración de países minados por grupos terroristas y por ende de refugiados, ha dado por terminado el Estatus Temporal de Protección (TPS) para países centroamericanos y ha suspendido temporalmente el programa para los jóvenes llegados en la infancia (DACA). Pero, ¿cuáles son las cifras reales de deportación?

Según declara la Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) en su portal web, el 2017 “ha sido un año exitoso en esfuerzos de seguridad fronteriza, en la reducción de la migración a través de la frontera, el aumento de las fuerzas en el interior y en el desmantelamiento de empresas criminales trasnacionales”. De la misma manera, la oficina explica en su reporte del año fiscal que todas sus medidas se han aplicado de acuerdo con la Orden Ejecutiva presidencial firmada el 25 de enero del 2017, y que sus estrategias contienen “la detención de personas que hayan sido condenadas por algún crimen, que hayan abusado de algún programa relacionado con beneficios públicos o que sean objeto de una orden final de deportación y que no hayan cumplido con ella”. Asimismo, la agencia explica que “cualquier ciudadano puede ser detenido de acuerdo al juicio de un oficial de inmigración que considere que plantea un riesgo para la seguridad nacional”. Este tipo de operaciones son llevadas a cabo por el organismo dependiente de ICE denominado “Operaciones de Ejecución y Remoción” (ERO, por sus siglas en inglés), y contempla varios tipos de arrestos: 1. Administrativos Arresto de ciudadanos inmigrantes por violación de las leyes migratorias. Durante el año 2017, ICE “registró su tasa más alta de arrestos administrativos”, comparado con los tres años fiscales anteriores. (Figura 1) 2. Administrativos por crímenes cometidos Contemplan el arresto de extranjeros con condenas criminales conocidas. Durante el año 2017, ERO arrestó 105.736 personas, lo que representa un aumento del 12% con respecto al año fiscal 2016. (Figura 2) 3. Administrativos sin cargos criminales Consisten en el arresto de inmigrantes que no estaban cometiendo un crimen en el momento de ser detenidos. Durante el año 2017, este tipo de detenciones representó el 26% del total de las detenciones del ICE. De esos arres-

tos, el 59% poseía algún tipo de cargo criminal sin resolver, pero el otro 41% contemplaba individuos indocumentados, previamente deportados o sencillamente personas que no habían cometido crimen alguno. (Tabla 1) 4. Arrestos generales Llevados a cabo dentro de la comunidad, fuera de prisión y en zonas que limitan el acceso a ICE. Durante el año 2017, este tipo de detenciones llegó a las 40,066, a diferencia del año fiscal 2016 donde se llevaron a cabo 30,348 arrestos. (Figura 3) Ahora bien, las tasas de detención no equivalen directamente a los números de personas deportadas durante el primer año de la Administración Trump. Las deportaciones se llevan a cabo en circunstancias variadas que incluyen detenciones fronterizas y detenciones dentro del territorio. Durante el año 2017, ICE ha reportado un aumento de las deportaciones por arrestos llevados a cabo dentro del territorio, comparado con el año fiscal 2016 durante la administración Obama. (Figura 4) Si bien varios medios nacionales han reportado que las tasas de deportación durante el primer año de gobierno de Trump son considerablemente menores a aquellas registradas

Según ICE, el 2017 “ha sido un año exitoso en la reducción de la migración a través de la frontera y en el aumento de las fuerzas en el interior”. CUANDO EL TERROR ES MÁS FUERTE QUE LA DEPORTACIÓN

Durante los ocho años precedentes a Donald Trump, el presidente Obama era conocido como “el deportador en jefe”, el hombre que se había encargado de dejar un legado de “deportaciones innecesarias” como reclamaba el National Council of La Raza en el 2014, cuando más de 2 millones de deportaciones se habían registrado hasta el momento. ¿Por qué es entonces tan agresiva la respuesta contra Trump durante su primer año? La respuesta es sencilla: a Trump se le podrá llamar ahora “el acosador en jefe”, pues sus medidas no se basan sólo en el refuerzo de las fuerzas del ICE, sino en la persecución de los inmigrantes, su estigmatización y en mecanismos de terror que obliguen a las personas a pensárselo dos veces antes de cruzar la frontera. Así lo confirmó un reportaje de The Associated Press publicado en el mes de diciembre, donde comparaba los datos de arrestos en la frontera con respecto a aquellos realizados en el interior, y atribuía esa diferencia a que menos personas deciden ahora emigrar a Estados Unidos gracias a la retórica violenta y amenazante de esta administración. “Los inmigrantes potenciales se han dado cuenta de que Estados Unidos no está precisamente colgando un cartel de ‘bienvenidos’”, dijo Michelle Mittelstadt del Migration Policy Institute, al medio. “Creo que ahora hay un sentimiento de que Estados Unidos es menos acogedor”. n el supermercado grande, al que me niego a entrar, hay cada vez más oscuros, vendiendo y comprando. El barrio se está vaciando de personas y hace tiempo que se ensucia con esa avalancha que ya no se irá ni descansará hasta ensuciarnos a todos. Desprecio, asco, miedo. Así podría resumirse lo que siente por los inmigrantes de su barrio el protagonista de Mírame, la nueva novela de Antonio Ungar (Bogotá, 1974). Escrito en forma de dietario personal, Mírame es la historia de un parisino xenófobo y solitario que espía a sus vecinos desde la ventana

de su casa. Al principio está convencido de que son árabes, pero “la rumana desdentada de la tienda de comida” de su barrio le dijo que eran inmigrantes paraguayos, “y que nadie sabe a qué se dedican, y que escupen en la calle y que había tenido que quitarle al más joven una lata de atún y otra de tomates picantes que quería robarse”, escribe el protagonista, en tono racista. Los hechos transcurren en un hipotético París tras el mortífero atentado islamista en la sala Bataclan, en noviembre de 2015. “La realidad es muy injusta con los inmigrantes, especialmente después de un atentado”, dijo Ungar durante la presentación de la novela en Barcelona, la semana pasada. Y cuando Ungar habla de atentados y de inmigración, sabe de lo que habla. Casado con una escritora palestina, Ungar se convirtió al islam y vive desde hace unos años en Jaffa, un

CULTURA enclave palestino dentro de Israel, bajo la amenaza permanente de atentados suicidas. Antes de vivir en Israel vivió seis años en Barcelona, donde trabajó de traductor y escritor (su novela más conocida, Tres Ataúdes Blancos, ganó el premio Herralde de novela en 2010 y ha sido traducida a siete idiomas), y en Iowa, EE.UU, donde participó en un programa internacional de escritores. “No quería que los lectores europeos pensaran que el protagonista es simplemente un loco, sino que vean que bien podría ser uno de ellos”, explicó el autor. “Es un hombre obsesionado con que los extranjeros algún día harán algo, aunque no se da ningún detalle de por qué los odia, sino que es una respuesta irracional. Quería que fuera un odio lo más cotidiano posible", añadió.

Para Ungar, su experiencia personal con la inmigración se remonta a sus abuelos paternos, Hans y Lilly Ungar, ambos judíos, que llegaron a Colombia por separado, huyendo del nazismo en su Austria natal. Hans y Lilly se conocieron en Bogotá y juntos fundaron la que sería la librería más grande de la ciudad, la Librería Central, por la que han pasado todos los grandes escritores latinoamericanos. “Los libros siempre han sido lo nuestro. En nuestra casa siempre hemos estado expuestos a los libros. Tony, que fue arquitecto, leía mucho. Y su hijo, Antonio, mi nieto, aunque estudió Arquitectura, como su papá, finalmente cayó en los libros. Se dedicó a escribir cuentos y novelas y es hoy un escritor conocido”, explicó Lilly, la abuela del escritor, en una entrevista con la revista Arcadia, hace dos años. Efectivamente, Antonio estudió Arquitectura, como su padre, pero en sus ratos libres se dedicaba a escribir historias, su pasión desde niño. A los 23 años logró que MÍRAME le publicaran su primer libro, una Novela, 2018 recopilación de cuentos y relatos cortos, y eso le animó a dejar la arquitectura para dedicarse de lleno a escribir. La decisión no fue en balde. En el año 2010, con 35 años, Ungar ganó el prestigioso premio

Herralde de Novela con Tres Ataúdes Blancos, una novela de suspense con toques de humor y fantasía, que habla de la corrupción y violencia que acechan un país imaginario a los pies de los Andes llamado Miranda. Se trata de la Colombia donde creció el autor, marcada por la corrupción, la desigualdad entre ricos y pobres, las guerrillas y el narcotráfico. “Colombia es un país muy duro para los pobres, pero muy cómodo para la clase media alta como la nuestra”, admitió el autor en una entrevista con el diario israelí Haaretz. Ungar ha preferido que sus tres hijos crecieran en Jaffa en lugar de Colombia. La vida en Palestina tampoco es fácil, con la sombra de los atentados acechando en todo momento. “Los atentados siembran el miedo y cambian el relato de la inmigración”, dijo el autor en Barcelona. Para obtener el pasaporte israelí, Ungar también tuvo que convertirse al islam, la religión de su esposa. Sin embargo, no se define como judío ni como musulmán. “Soy secular”, confesó a Haaretz.

Durante los últimos diez años, Ungar ha compaginado su oficio de escritor con la periodista y traductor, como el protagonista de Mírame. En Barcelona, donde vivió seis años, tuvo ocasión de conocer al escritor chileno Roberto Bolaño, que se convirtió en una especie de tutor, pero en general sus amigos no son escritores. “Los escritores suelen ser engreídos y llenos de codicia, al menos los latinoamericanos y los españoles. Prefiero ir con gente que no ha estudiado nada, o con arquitectos, gente a quien no les importe si soy o no escritor”, explicó a Haaretz. Su único amigo escritor es el colombiano Sergio Álvarez, quien presentó su última novela en Barcelona. “Mírame refleja la crisis actual de esta Europa que no sabe qué hacer con los inmigrantes. Entonces, ¿por qué el protagonista de la novela es un occidental racista y no un inmigrante?, le preguntó Álvarez. “Pues porque la realidad es claramente ya muy injusta hacia el inmigrante. Hoy, trece años después de ese intento inicial de modernizar el formato, The Guardian ha decidido adelgazar. Y parece ser que ha logrado su propósito. Pero, si la elegancia de su tipografía y la calidad del papel no tienen demasiado contenido calórico, ¿qué les ha motivado a llevar esta dieta? Lo que motiva a la mayor parte de las empresas: el dinero. Para la mayoría de ustedes, humanos, bots y trolls leyendo estas líneas, la operación de adelgazamiento que han experimentado numerosos periódicos no parece una noticia demasiado difícil de digerir (especialmente si no es usted nativo de Reino Unido, hogar de los majestuosos corgis, los scones a la hora del té y de nuestro querido The Guardian). Pero la noticia de verdad no está en el acto de que The Guardian haya decidido imprimir menos, teóricamente, sino en por qué se vio forzado a hacerlo. The Guardian está considerado uno de los cinco mejores periódicos del Reino Unido por su consolidada tirada de ejemplares y su fiel cartera de lectores, que cada día ojean sus páginas o deslizan el mouse por la pantalla en busca de artículos originales en su web. Ha sido siempre íntegro y meticuloso a la hora de cubrir noticias y dar exclusivas importantes, como escándalos por escuchas telefónicas, el programa de espionaje PRISM o los papeles de Panamá. Aún y así, el medio no ha podido escaquearse de las demandas de inmediatez digital que comporta el siglo XXI,

En este lado del Atlántico,ya hemos vivido de cerca casos similares: El verano pasado, The Village Voice, uno de los primeros semanarios alternativos del país, apreciado por su creatividad y su énfasis en la comunidad, se vio obligado a abandonar el papel y convertirse en un medio completamente digital. El cambio se produjo después de sesenta años siendo el periódico gratuito más conocido de las calles de Nueva York. De igual manera, en 2014 la revista Playboy anunció su decisión de retirar sus obscenidades -y, de acuerdo, sus inteligentes historias de ficción y bien documentados reportajes - de las estanterías de los quioscos para convertirse en una revista online. Durante un tiempo, siguió publicando en internet sus infames fotografías de celebridades y playmates escasamente vestidas para atraer a un público más numeroso a su sitio web, asegurando que el contenido era “seguro para trabajar” y apropiado para compartir en las redes sociales. Cabe señalar que en 2017 los desnudos regresaron porque, como dice el refrán, el sexo vende. Y, ¿cómo podríamos olvidar la muerte del Philadelphia City Paper en 2015? Descanse en paz. A veces, incluso las mejores primicias y el periodismo más original pueden llegar a sufrir bajo la tiranía de los tests virales de Buzzfeed y los titulares llamativos en busca de clics. En la batalla por la supervivencia de los medios del siglo XXI, solo aquellos que estén dispuestos a mantenerse al día con la tecnología

de los tiempos ganarán. Sin embargo, el rebranding y rediseño de la marca puede ser pernicioso o, como lo expresó Amol Rajan, editora de medios de la BBC, “culpable hasta que se demuestre su inocencia”. En un artículo publicado en la misma BBC, Rajan destaca que incluso ser etiquetado como tabloide podría tener connotaciones negativas para The Guardian, deslegitimándolo a un nivel completamente superficial. Después de todo, los tabloides tienden a ser ... malos, repletos de ese tipo de artículos que a uno le hacen temer por la humanidad (pero también le hacen pensar si Kylie Jenner estará embarazada o no). Estos tabloides están repletos de chismes, especulaciones dramáticas y artículos ñoños que enganchan, que es exactamente por lo que uno no lee The Guardian. Rajan sugiere que The Guardian abandone el término “tabloide” y opte por algo más aceptable para su audiencia, como un “compacto”. uentan los amantes de la montaña que Sir Edmund Hillary, el primer hombre que coronó el Monte Everest, pudo estar muy poco tiempo en el pico, porque la climatología indicaba que era importante bajar lo antes posible. A pesar de ello, cuando se le preguntó por este hecho, el filántropo aventurero comentó: “Más que llegar a la cima, lo más hermoso ha sido el camino recorrido hasta ella”… De la misma manera que el montañero neozelandés, las Águilas de Filadelfia coronaron el pasado domingo la complicada ascensión hasta el título de la Conferencia Nacional, siempre más abrupta que la de la Conferencia Americana. El hecho de que en los últimos diez años la Nacional haya tenido nueve campeones diferentes demuestra lo complicado de la aventura. Sin embargo, como Hillary, el equipo de nuestra ciudad tiene que estar más orgulloso del trayecto recorrido, del aplomo mostrado para afrontar crudas lesiones, de ser dado como favorito para perder en los dos partidos de playoffs a pesar de jugar en el Lincoln Financial Field… porque las grandes gestas se construyen paso a paso, partido a partido. Muchos expertos evaluaron la clasificación

de las Águilas para el Super Tazón como la temporada más sorprendente ejecutada en tiempos recientes por un equipo de la NFL. Pero el enorme éxito de Filadelfia tiene que estar ligado, por encima de todo, a un nombre, Doug Pederson, el entrenador que no solo volvió a su casa, como máximo responsable, para recomponer los desaguisados dejados por su predecesor, Chip Kelly, sino a construir una franquicia ganadora, algo que ha tardado solo dos años en conseguir, una hazaña que ni los más optimistas de lugar hubieran previsto cuando se hizo cargo de las riendas del equipo en la temporada 2016. Conocí a Pederson en la Liga Mundial de Fútbol Americano (más tarde NFL Europa). Allí jugó como mariscal de campo de los New York/ New Jersey Knights a principios de la década de los noventa y en los Rhein Fire de Dusseldorf, Alemania, a mediados. De allí dio el salto a la NFL y, aunque no triunfó como hicieran otros jugadores de su posición (Kurt Warner principalmente), sí que estuvo en el sitio adecuado para aprender de los mejores, trabajando bajo entrenadores sabios en aspectos ofensivos, especialmente en Green Bay. Pederson siempre fue un gran observador, una esponja que sabía asumir y mejorar los conceptos que le esbozaban. De esta forma, en su primera oportunidad al timón de un club NFL, ha explotado de manera espectacular. Si te dicen que durante una temporada vas a perder, entre otros, a hombres como tu mejor liniero ofensivo, Jason Peters, tu apoyador central estelar, Jordan Hicks, tu corredor especialista en acciones de pase, Darren Sproles, y sobre todo al mariscal de campo más en forma de toda la liga, el joven Carson Wentz, probablemente te des por vencido. Sin embargo, las Águilas han sabido sobreponerse a todo, mostrando la solidez de su bloque y el gran papel de sus entrenadores. Es cierto, Wentz es muy bueno, pero la emersión de su sustituto, Nick

Foles, no ha hecho otra cosa que ratificar el excelente trabajo de Pederson & Co. Su sistema de opción de carrera o pase (RPO), leyendo el interior de la zona media defensiva rival, ha demostrado sencillez y eficacia, siendo ejecutado por Foles a la perfección en los playoffs. Hemos tenido cinco días sensacionales para disfrutar de las épicas victorias obtenidas en casa ante Halcones y Vikingos. Ahora no vale ninguna otra cosa que centrarse en las potentes huestes comandas por Bill Belichick y Tom Brady. Por supuesto, las Águilas no serán favoritas en esta postemporada una vez más, pero en nuestro foro interno podemos confiar en Pederson y sus muchachos para dar la campanada ante los Patriotas de Nueva Inglaterra y acabar con la maldición de 58 años sin ganar en Filadelfia el título de la NFL. ■

López cuenta que cuando vio “Lady Bird” sintió que estaba viendo su película. “Lo disfruté y en ocasiones seguí pensando: ‘Vaya, la madre es como la mamá de mi película. Vaya, no la dejarán ir a la universidad como Ana’”. Pero más allá del conflicto principal de la película, López vio más motivos para pensar que la

Después de más de 30 años de lucha para llegar a ser una de las dramaturgas chicanas más importantes de Estados Unidos, López vive con sentimientos encontrados los triunfos de la película de Greta Gerwig, directora y guionista de “Lady Bird”. En entrevista , la escritora mexicana dice que cuando escucha los elogios para el film de Gerwig se siente realmente feliz: “Me encanta cuando se celebra la historia de una mujer”. A ello hay que sumar que Gerwig se sumó hoy a la terna de mujeres nominadas a mejor director tras las candidaturas que lograron Lina Wertmüller (“Seven Beauties”, 1975), Jane Campion (“The Piano”, 1993), Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”, 2003) y Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”, 2008), la única que ha logrado la estatuilla. Y otra película, “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri”, una comedia negra sobre los intentos de una madre de que se haga justicia a su hija asesinada, representa ese cambio en Hollywood, al igual que el hecho de que Rachel Morrison se convirtiese en la primera mujer en la historia en ser nominada a mejor directora de fotografía por “Mudbound”. Sin embargo, la tristeza también embarga a López al pensar que ha estado en la industria como guionista por más de 27 años y ha recibido grandes rechazos simplemente porque sus historias son de mujeres latinas. Con esfuerzo, López logró llevar al cine su obra teatral “Las mujeres de verdad tienen curvas”, que cuenta la historia de Ana, una joven de una familia mexicana de Los Ángeles con aspiraciones que se ganó una beca para estudiar en Nueva York pero su madre se niega a dejarla ir y prefiere que siga trabajando en su taller de costura. Con guión coescrito por López, en 2002 se estrenó la cinta homónima que dinamizó la carrera de América Ferrera, quién interpretaba a Ana. Al hablar del tema López llega hasta las lágrimas, pues asegura que no fue fácil salir de las sombras como indocumentada e imponer su sueño de convertirse en dramaturga y quedarse en Los Ángeles para defender a su comunidad y trabajar para que en el cine sus historias no sean descartadas continuamente. Incluso López cuestionó su talento como autora hasta que se dio cuenta de que “no era su habilidad para escribir sino que algunos ejecutivos son simplemente racistas/sexistas y usan la excusa de ‘es solo un negocio’” para justificarse”, resaltó. Aunque el sabor agridulce aún queda en López, el éxito de “Lady Bird” le da un nuevo empuje a ese sector de mujeres latinas, que, consideró, no sólo son discriminadas por su género, sino también por su origen. “Yo también merezco un lugar en Hollywood y la oportunidad de seguir contando historias impactantes. Coescribí una versión mejor de ‘Lady Bird’ que desafía el ‘status quo’. Ojalá mi película hubiera sido apreciada así”, lamentó. ■

Así lo cree el escritor mexicano Laury Leite, que la semana pasada presentó por primera vez en EE.UU. su novela “En la soledad de un cielo muerto”, que se publicará en inglés este año. En una entrevista con Efe, Leite explicó a que tanto “En la soledad de un cielo muerto” como su segunda novela, “La gran demencia”, aún no dada a imprenta desde fuera de México, relatan historias sucedidas en su país natal, que el autor abandonó hace 14 años. “La distancia y comparar la vida en otros países te da la posibilidad de mirarlo (a México) más a fondo”, señala este escritor de 33 años, quien ve en una sociedad “tan conflictiva” como la mexicana “mucho material literario”. “Es una mezcla de culturas tan explosiva como fascinante”, dice. El Instituto Mexicano de Cultura de Miami acogió la semana pasada la presentación de la novela con la que Leite, nacido en 1984 de padre brasileño y madre mexicana, ha debutado en ese género, después de publicar cuentos, ensayos y artículos periodísticos. La editorial miamense La Pereza compró a

Si en “En la soledad de un cielo muerto” habló del desarraigo y la falta de “un lugar en el mundo” que siente un mexicano que emigró a España y debido a la crisis económica en ese país debe regresar al suyo y a vivir con su madre, en esta nueva obra retrata la vida de una familia en los suburbios de la capital de México. Los padres son antiguos “hippies” que se adaptaron al modo de vida convencional y tuvieron tres hijos, cada uno muy diferente en su manera de pensar y vivir, subraya Leite. También son muy diferentes las dos novelas de Leite, empezando por como las escribió. Según relata en la entrevista mostrando el original, lleno de tachaduras, anotaciones a pie de página y subrayados en distintos colores, la primera la escribió a mano y solo cuando estuvo finalizada la pasó a una computadora. En la segunda, “más larga, compleja y con más perspectivas y narradores”, usó la computadora desde el principio. “Han sido dos desafíos muy diferentes”, señala el autor mexicano-canadiense, pues ya obtuvo la nacionalidad del país donde reside actualmente y del que es su esposa. Antes de establecerse en Canadá vivió en España y quizás por eso le interesan las migraciones y el desarraigo, pero en sus novelas evita deliberadamente caer en la autobiografía. “La computadora es hoy en día lo más parecido a un hogar para mucha gente”, señaló en una entrevista con Efe cuando se anunció

eryl Levitz se acuerda de una Filadelfia diferente. Levitz se enamoró de la ciudad del Amor Fraternal hace más 40 años, cuando a su marido le ofrecieron un puesto en el departamento de psiquiatría de la universidad de Pensilvania y se mudaron a la ciudad. Enseguida se quedó prendada de la excepcional diversidad de Filadelfia, de su arquitectura y diseño únicos, de la comodidad de poder ir andando a todas partes. Sin embargo, Filadelfia no era un destino atractivo para mucha gente y Levitz admite que la ciudad tenía algunos fallos. “No me gustaba, por ejemplo, ver que no había lugares para almorzar o para ir de compras, que no había nadie en las calles…”, recuerda Levitz en una entrevista con AL DÍA. “Me di cuenta que podíamos hacer algo para arreglar aquello”. Entonces llegaron los 80, cuando el promotor Bill Rouse propuso construir un rascacielos que sobrepasara en altura la estatua de Willam Penn, situada en lo alto del tejado de la Alcaldía. El proyecto implicaba romper por primera vez con el límite de altura tradicional de la ciudad y generó un animado debate en toda la ciudad. “Fue cuando pensé, esta ciudad está tomando vida”, dice Levitz.

Rouse logró sacar adelante su proyecto y empezó a construir el Liberty Place en 1985, convirtiéndose en un símbolo del amanecer de una nueva era en Filadelfia. “(Rouse) logró decir, de una forma que yo no supe hacer: ‘Filadelfia puede cambiar’”, explica Levitz. Levitz decidió ponerse manos a la obra y ayudar a acelerar y a orientar este cambio en la ciudad como defensora del turismo en Filadelfia. En 1996 se convirtió en presidenta y CEO de la recién fundada Visit Philadelphia, la agencia oficial de marketing y turismo de la región. Antes había sido vicepresidenta de Turismo de la Oficina de Visitantes y Convenciones de Filadelfia, y cofundadora de la Asociación de Propietarios del Centro de la ciudad. Después de 40 años trabajando para poner a la ciudad en el mapa, Levitz acaba de anunciar que se retira. Una decisión difícil, admite, dada su pasión por Filadelfia, pero cree que ha llegado el momento de “pasar el mando”, aprovechando que la agencia funciona bien y tiene la “energía y capacidad” para seguir adelante. La Junta de Directores de Visit Philadelphia ha lanzado una campaña a nivel nacional para encontrar su relevo. Levitz espera poder retirarse este año, pero seguirá siendo la presidenta y CEO de la organización hasta que ella y la junta hayan encontrado la persona ideal para ejercer el puesto.

UN TIEMPO BIEN APROVECHADO

Para determinar el impacto que ha tenido Levitz en el sector turístico de Filadelfia, uno solo necesita fijarse en las cifras. Según las estadísticas compiladas por Visit Philadelphia, el turismo de la zona ha hecho enormes progresos desde que la agencia puso en marcha las primeras campañas publicitarias, con el empuje de Levitz. noctaciones por motivos de ocio en la región aumentaron en más del 100%, pasando de los 7 millones en 1997 a más de 15 millones en 2016. -En 1996, el turismo de ocio representaba el 14% (250,000) de las reservas de hotel en el centro de la ciudad. l fiscal general Josh Shapiro dijo que el año 2017 sería un año lleno de retos. “Vimos algunas cosas en este país que no estoy seguro de que estuviéramos preparados para ver”, dijo Shapiro. “Desafortunadamente, el discurso del presidente ha envalentonado a los fanáticos cobardes de este país”. Las palabras del fiscal general iban dirigidas a los más de 150 asistentes a la segunda conferencia anual “Unificando a nuestras comunidades, respondiendo al odio”, celebrada el pasado 17 de enero en el Constitution Center. Según estadísticas del FBI, el número de crímenes de odio en los EE.UU aumentó casi un 5 por ciento en 2016, y estas cifras sólo representan los crímenes de odio que han sido reportados. El estudio del FBI revela que más del 50 por ciento de los delitos por cuestiones de raza cometidos ese año fueron dirigidos contra afroamericanos, mientras que los crímenes contra los judíos representaron el 53 por ciento de los delitos relacionados con religión. Entre 2015 y 2016, los crímenes por motivos religiosos contra musulmanes aumentaron un 19 por ciento, mientras que los crímenes contra las comunidades LGBTQ representaron el tercer tipo de crimen de odio más frecuente en 2016. El área de Filadelfia no es inmune a este escenario de intolerancia, discriminación e injusticia. Durante la conferencia, Nancy Baron-Baer, directora regional de ADL, y Rue Landau, directora ejecutiva de PCHR, dieron varios ejemplos de episodios de prejuicios y odio ocurridos en la región de Filadelfia en el último año.
