Remembering poet Miguel Hernández, in Barcelona, Spain
I
was 21 when I first read him; he was 23 when he first published. I was a student in Bogotá, Colombia, and could barely understand any literature, mainly that abstract one LEA EN my elderly lady ESPAÑOL professor reciting NEWS.com/OPINION the lines written by spanish writer Miguel Hernández. She deemed these master pieces, although he put them in paper in his late 20s. Me, completely in the dark about “the profound meaning,” as my old proffesor writing slowly and solemnly as the words screamed. According to her (an aged woman, PhD, educated in Paris), we were a bunch of ignorants and she often got upset with us, her teenagers who were students, because of our obvious lack of connection with the music in this poeter. Perhaps, she had forgotten she had been in her 20s herself and that, in their 20s, human beings have barely “opened their eyes.” For example, this line dedicated to “Ramón Sijé, a quien tanto quería,” acquires a meaning I didn’t see then. “A dentelladas secas y calientes...” the writer charged, to follow with his desire to “Desamordazarte y regresarte,” Ramón! He was his dear friend, dead and buried, like García Lorca, after he was killed cowardly in the Spanish Civil War. Miguel Hernandez, “el niño poeta,” attempts to “resurrect” in his famous poem, “Orihuela,”

MIGUEL HERNÁNDEZ his friend and mentor, using the spell and the power of the written word and his own masterful and very natural lyrics. Like in Walt Whitman’s, poetry in Hernández grows larger when the words are fewer and simpler. He is one among many writers from Spain, many other more famous and celebrated than him, but this is the one I happen to remember this luminous day of July the 5th, 2016, in front of the Mediterranean Sea, in Barceloneta, Barcelona, Spain, “La Madre Patria” (The Motherland), as Latinos in general tend to call, sometimes reluctantly, the part of the Peninsula that came to our America and has stayed there there for the past 500 plus years. Hernández, born in Orihuela, “su pueblo y el mío,” in 1910, the year after my own father Pedro who know how to write, was born in Galán, Santander, Colombia.

People for the American Way.

A

Don’t exclude any Latino from “PoliticalFest:” We like to party! Former Governor Ed Rendell, master of “PoliticalFest” 2016, must make it clear: Don’t exclude anybody, specially Latinos.
T
he DNC party, the one with music, drinks, lots of food and networking is about to start in our city. While we all gear up to host the largest party in town, with 6,000 delegates and four times as many journalist from all over the world, some house rules must be observed. Since the TV and photo cameras will all be rolling and zoomed in on us it is incumbent upon every single Philadephian, specially at the leadership level, “to behave and show kind manners to all.” Our Philly shrug, and/or tobacco-chewing attitude, must stop even if it is for the week, the week all the eyes of the world will be literally looking at us. To hear already stories of lawyerly deception, or exclusion of the little ones at the hands of the mighty powerful, or public stories of cowboy politics, will be horrifying. As much as it and will be a shame to all us— leaders or not.
Just an example: AL DÍA was invited to participate in the “PoliticalFest,” put together by the host committee, presided nominally by former Governor Ed Rendell. This “PoliticalFest,” a huge success when Republicans came to town, is now back to entertain the Democrats with mostly funny and serious stories of our past as well as of our present. As we accepted, we also asked to allow AL DÍA to extend its tent to touch more people, without encroaching on anybody else’s. The agency in charge of the logistics pushed back on us as we asked to, please, not pigeon-hole AL DÍA along the Philadelphia Gay News and the Philadelphia Tribune, two other respectable pubs in town. No answer so far. We hope Mr. Rendell is reading this editorial and avoids further scuffle by doing the right thing: inclusion, not exclusion; celebrate the little ones as much as the big. Don’t obfuscate the cameras. After all it is, indeed, party time! No, Ed? ■

to sigue siendo la misma.

¿A qué edad?

Fotos: Peter Fitzpatrick/AL DÍA News nar platos colombianos”, dijo Chino.

Honran a Cheo Feliciano EFE
U
