The resurgence of the term ‘illegal immigrants’

n the past few weeks, we’ve noticed a resurgence in the casual use of the terms “illegal immigrants” and even “illegal aliens” by media organizations like TPM, Politico, the Washington Post and the New York Times. The latter two have always been spotty about style as far as this goes, hewing to their in-house style rather than the Associated Press’s stylebook — which in April of 2013 changed its guidelines for media use: “Except in direct quotes essential to the story, use illegal only to refer to an action, not a person: illegal immigration, but not illegal immigrant.” The AP change represented a victory for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and innumerable Asian and Latino journalists, editors and advocates who had long asserted that the compound word could not be understood as neutral — as it had no equivalent in common usage. Illegal driver for those with speeding tickets? Illegal filer for those with tax irregularities? Illegal rider for those who jump the turnstiles on the subway? In fact, the association of the word “illegal” with a particular subset of individuals in our nation has been so strongly drawn by repeated political and media use of “illegal immigrants” and “illegal aliens,” that many people still cannot read a sentence like the one in the preceding paragraph without at first misunderstanding and assuming (if only for an instant) that the driver, the filer and the rider mentioned are all undocumented. Jonathan Rosa, a linguistic anthropolist writing for the American Anthropological Association, explains it this way: “Organizations such as the Society of Professional Journalists have described ‘illegal immigrant’ as a ‘politically charged’ phrase that should be reevaluated for its potential violation of the widely embraced journalistic practice of assuming innocence until guilt is proven. Others have made the related case

that ‘illegal’ is at best a misleading generalization, at worst a slur. A person diagnosed with cancer is not described as cancerous; however, ‘illegal’ becomes a way of characterizing not just one’s migration status, but also one’s entire person.” If — as we’ve noticed in the past weeks — news media organizations are deliberately choosing to break AP style and revert to use of of the term “illegal immigrants,” it will have an impact. Google trends show that searches using the term “illegal immigrants” dropped by nearly 50 percent from April 2013 (when AP announced its stylebook change) to August. At that point the searches using those terms dipped to their lowest level since 2005. It isn’t much of a stretch to think that the change in wording in news media organizations that adhere to AP style guidelines was one of the contributing factors in the decline. Looking again at those Google trends for the search terms “illegal immigrants,” shows the term spiking in July of 2014 (during the unaccompanied minors at the border crisis), and again in November of 2014 when President Obama outlined his executive actions on immigration (and news organizations such as Business Standard ran headlines like: “Obama provides legal status to five million illegal immigrants”). Is there a spike in “illegal immigrants” searches now? Well, looking at the Google trends for June it is way too early to tell. But, we’re only three days into the month as we write this editorial and already we’re at the same number of searches with that term as the whole month of May. So, why now? Why are media organizations reverting to a term that those who are most frequently criminalized by it consider a slur? We don’t know. But like so much that has to do with immigration reform in the past years, what we once celebrated as a victory hasn’t remained one.

Will the discussion about immigrants and immigration slide further back to vituperative and destructive mode? Will we go back to using slur and generalization to characterize those who are our neighbors, friends, colleagues and associates?

Will we, years from now, look back and realize that this moment — poised between a return to criminalized language and characterization, or not — was the moment we chose to see the dream impoverished and light of our torch extinguished?

ANA GAMBOA anag@aldianews.com uando uno visita las nuevas instalaciones de la organización Dress for Success es como entrar en una boutique con gran variedad de artículos profesionales, aunque la experiencia de compra es mucho más compleja de la normal. “Mujeres llegan a nosotros por razones muy variadas, en circunstancias en las que cualquiera de nosotros podríamos encontrarnos. Nuestra meta máxima es llevar a nuestras clientes hacia el éxito”, dijo Barbara Silzle, directora de la organización en Filadelfia. Un proyecto sin fines de lucro que forma parte de una organización global, Dress for Success promueve la independencia económica de mujeres desfavorecidas, proporcionando vestimenta profesional, una red de apoyo y las herramientas de desarrollo necesarias para encarrilarlas en una vía para prosperar profesionalmente. La sede de Filadelfia ha proporcionado servicios desde 2008, beneficiando a unas 2.500 mujeres al año. La familia, clave en la recuperación tras un trauma LUCÍA TEJO lucíat@aldianews.com Pese a su gran influencia en el desarrollo, la salud y el bienestar de la persona, la salud mental continúa siendo hoy en día un tema tabú; especialmente en caso de los más pequeños, donde el miedo o el desconocimiento dificultan que el menor reciba la ayuda que necesita. Una atención que, desde hace cerca de 40 años, se ha convertido en el principal motor del Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CCTC), la organización sin ánimo de lucro especializada en ofrecer tratamiento y terapia a niños víctima de trauma o abuso en Filadelfia. Cada año, unos 2.400 menores y sus familias reciben ayuda en un centro en el que un 30 por ciento del equipo es latino, tal y como explica a AL DÍA News el CEO de CCTC, Antonio Valdés: “Casi el mismo que de pacientes, cerca de un 35 por ciento de niños tan jóvenes como de 18 meses”. Junto a ellos trabajan en hogares, colegios y en su clínica. Todo ello con un enfoque especialmente centrado en el niño y su familia. “Muchas veces las familias de los niños que están con nosotros necesitan mucha ayuda también. Y estamos ahí para eso. Es difícil trabajar con una familia que está luchando con asuntos de recursos.[…] Tratamos de ayudar a las familias con muchas de las cosas que les están pasando en la vida para que ellos puedan trabajar mejor y tener más capacidad para trabajar con los niños, porque al fin y al cabo, una familia saludable y efectiva es lo mejor que hay para un niño”, explica Valdés.

Porque cualquier persona a la que le ha pasado una cosa así tiene que aprender a vivir con eso, porque uno nunca se va a olvidar. Si uno se olvida, más daño le hace. Si algo le pasa a una persona cuando es joven y lo tapa, que es algo muy natural que la mente hace para protegerse, taparlo. Pero eso le sigue afectando emocionalmente. Cuando ese niño a los 10, 11, 12 años tiene un comportamiento malo o le está yendo mal en el colegio… La gente se olvida, ‘¿te acuerdas lo que le pasó a ese niño cuando era chiquito?’ piensan que hace mucho y que no tiene nada que ver con eso, pero no es así. Y cuanto más jóvenes son, peor es el efecto. Porque un niño a esa edad de 3, 4 o 5 años está en el momento más importante de su desarrollo. Y si le pasa algo feo a esa edad, le puede cambiar

“Es difícil, sinceramente hoy en día se habla tanto de salud mental, que a veces viene un padre con un niño que tiene problemas del comportamiento y nosotros le ayudamos a entender que no es algo serio, que es parte del desarrollo normal de un niño. Es normal que un niño empuje los límites a cierta edad. Ahora, cuando un niño se está haciendo daño o no sabe como socializar con los demás niños o siempre está peleando o discutiendo, o hay una distracción muy grande, que el niño se queda separado de los demás. Eso son cosas, no para preocuparse, pero no hay nada malo en llamar a una persona, hacer una pregunta. Se puede hacer una evaluación y dejarle saber si necesita ayuda o no. Muchas veces en la familia tienen miedo a pedir esa ayuda porque no quieren que le pongan un diagnóstico a un niño sin necesidad. Y sí, hay padres que tienen que proteger a sus niños y tienen que estar seguros de que ese niño recibe los servicios apropiados. […] Ahora, servicios sin necesidad o medicina sin necesidad obvia-

» Los primeros síntomas, dos meses después del trauma

“Si un niño ha pasado por un trauma, lo más pronto posible que ese niño pueda volver a un camino de desarrollo más normal, es menor el efecto que ese trastorno va a tener en su vida. Por ello es importante no perder tiempo. Una cosa que mucha gente no sabe es que si una persona pasa por un trauma, típicamente los síntomas no se ven hasta seis u ocho semanas después. Lo normal sería que a los dos meses se empiece a ver un comportamiento distinto, y la gente que no lo sabe no lo asocia”.

» ¿Cuál

es el tratamiento o tratamientos ante un trauma?

“El tratamiento principal es terapia, pero mucha de esa terapia es familiar. Precisamente

sonas empieza a perder la esperanza de futuro y el creer que sí se puede... El efecto negativo que ello puede tener, no solamente en la recuperación de ese niño, también en esa familia. Es una de las cosas poderosas y muy negativas del efecto que tiene la violencia y el trauma, pierden su sentido de que sí se puede, de que hay algo por lo que luchar, que el mañana importa… Hay un patrón en personas que han vivido muchas dificultades, que se esfuerzan mucho en sobrevivir y no tanto en vivir”.

» ¿Cuál es el tiempo medio de curación?

“La palabra cura es difícil en este mundo porque uno nunca se escapa completamente del trauma. Si una persona fue violada cuando tenía 6 o 7 años, esas son cosas que se quedan como parte de la vida y uno aprende como vivir con eso. El tratamiento formal, típicamente puede ser de 9 meses a 15 o 18 meses. Los niños pasan por distintas épocas de desarrollo, por ello muchas veces explicamos a la familia que no es algo raro, que si un niño

con los niños jóvenes porque es importante ayudar a la familias a entender el efecto que el trauma ha tenido, no solamente en el niño, también en la familia entera. Muchas veces, con traumas que ocurren dentro de una familia, la familia ni cuenta se da que empieza a funcionar de una manera nueva. Y esa manera nueva ocurrió para ajustarse al trauma de esa familia, pero después de que el trauma pasase. Si se quedan con ese comportamiento ese comportamiento no va a funcionar bien cuando todo vuelva a su normalidad, entonces la familia si no es consciente puede resultar perjudicada. Por ello, hay que buscar esa conversación y abrir la puerta para hablar sobre cómo este trauma me ha afectado diferente al resto. Con esto se puede cambiar el comportamiento, ayudarse y respaldarse”.

» La pérdida de esperanza, un problema y un síntoma

“Lo triste de los efectos de la violencia y del trauma es que la primera cosa que se pierde es el sentido de esperanza y futuro. Y eso es un síntoma de trauma. La familia a veces no se da cuenta de que han sido afectados por el trauma. Y si un grupo de per-

estuvo en tratamiento por algo que le pasó; cuando tenga 12 o 13 años y se esté acercando a la adolescencia, lo que le pasó cuando era niño le puede afectar de una manera nueva. Y eso no es algo malo, hay que estar preparado para cuando llegue a esa edad y quiera hablar sobre ello otra vez y necesite ayuda que esa puerta se mantenga abierta y no lo vea como algo negativo”.

El Culinary Literacy Center enseña a cocinar a Filadelfia LUCÍA TEJO luciat@aldianews.com El Culinary Literacy Center del Free Library of Philadelphia se prepara para la llegada de la nueva estación con el lanzamiento de una serie de programas que se sucederán a lo largo de las próximas semanas y que están dirigidos tanto a niños como a adultos. La serie inaugural, bautizada como ‘Ingredients for good health’ y presentada por Cancer Treatment Centers of America, está enfocada a la mejora de la salud de la mano de la nutrición y unos talleres pensados para enseñar a preparar comidas saludables y con productos de temporada. El primero de ellos, dedicado a los supervivientes de cáncer y a la elaboración de recetas para aquellas personas que se encuentran en tratamiento o en periodo de post-tratamiento, tuvo lugar el pasado 19 de mayo; los dos próximos se celebraran el martes 16 de junio (prepración de platos sencillos con alimentos y productos de temporada) y el miércoles 15 de julio (sobre los beneficios de cocinar a la placha o al ‘grill’), ambos a las 6.00 p.m. El evento es gratuito previo registro en freelibrarycook.eventbrite.com.

Para los más pequeños y jóvenes de la casa, Culinary Literacy Center ha creado ‘Summer Thyme Cooks’, su serie de cocina destinada, por un lado, a niños de quinto y sexto grado; por el otro, a adoles-

centes de entre 13 y 18. Desarrollada durante cuatro semanas, la principal finalidad es que los participantes aprendan habilidades básicas en la cocina, así como trucos e información sobre platos y alimentos saludables. La primera sesión de niños tendrá lugar del 25 de junio al 16 de julio, entre las 9.20 a.m. y las 10.30 a.m., y la segunda entre el 23 de julio y el 13 de agosto, en el mismo horario. Mientras que las de jóvenes están organizadas en las mismas fechas, pero de 12.00 p.m. a 2.00 p.m. Las clases, lanzadas con la ayuda de Vetri Foundation for Children, culminarán con una comida/degustación en grupo y de estilo ‘familiar’ de los platos previamente cocinados. Además, los niños podrán poner en práctica lo aprendido en casa gracias a las recetas semanales y una bolsa de comida con los ingredientes necesarios para realizarlas. La historia de la lucha por la igualdad LGBT que comenzó en Filadelfia hace 50 años se sigue escribiendo en nuestros días y será motivo de una gran celebración en la ciudad. ARTURO VARELA arturov@aldianews.com n anticipación al 50 aniversario de unas de las primeras manifestaciones por los derechos LGBT en la nación, que se llevaron a cabo justo aquí en Filadelfia antes de los disturbios de Stonewall en Nueva York, AL DÍA News habló con organizadores de esta gran celebración y pioneros de ésta lucha por la igualdad que se sigue librando en nuestros días. Entre las piezas centrales de esta celebración está la exhibición “Speaking Out for Equality: The Constitution, Gay Rights & the Supreme Court”, organizada por William Way Community Center y el National Constitution Center. Esta exhibición hace un recuento de la lucha por la igualdad LGBT a través de la historia y su paso por los tribunales. La exhibición, que se lleva a cabo del 5 de junio al 7 de septiembre, coincide con una anticipada decisión de la Corte Suprema sobre el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo en junio, el mes de la historia LGBT. “El tiempo no podría ser mejor para hablar de esta lucha que comenzó en la década de los cincuenta y que continúa en nuestros días”, dijo Chris Bartlett, director ejecutivo de William Way. “Esta exhibición va a ser una gran oportunidad para que distintas generaciones, tanto los jóvenes como los ancianos, aprendan sobre la importancia de la historia LGBT en nuestra región y en nuestro país”. LUCHA | Viene de 10 “Es importante que la gente en Filadelfia conozca el papel que la ciudad jugó en este movimiento que se ha llevado a cabo durante los últimos 50 años, y que tuvo sus raíces aquí en Filadelfia de la misma forma que nuestra nación tuvo sus raízes aquí hace más de 200 años”, dijo Vince Stango, jefe de operaciones de NCC. Pese a que la exhibición “Speaking Out for Equality” es una de las piezas centrales de la celebración del 50 aniversario, los organizadores invitaron a otras organizaciones a montar sus propias exhibiciones y programación en torno a la historia LGBT. “Uno de los objetivos era mostrar la diversidad de la comunidad LGBT por lo que invitamos a otras organizaciones a enfocarse en aspectos particulares de la historia”, dijo Bartlett. Por su parte, The African American Museum in

Philadelphia, presenta “Legendary: Inside the House Ballroom Scene” (junio 12 - agosto 16), una exhibición de fotografías de Gerard H. Gaskin, sobre la cultura de los salones de baile de la comunidad LGBT afroamericana y latina. “Hubo un esfuerzo por parte del comité organizador de ser tan inclusivo como fuera posible para que distintas voces de distintos grupos étnicos fueran representadas”, dijo David Acosta, miembro del comité organizador del 50 aniversario. “Ha sido un éxito expandir la gama de las organizaciones participantes para que puedan contar su propia historia”. Malcolm Lazin, presidente de la celebración del 50 aniversario, director ejecutivo de Equality Forum, y fundador del Mes de Historia LGBT, habló sobre otros componentes de la celebración. “Del 2 al 5 de julio se llevarán a cabo una variedad de paneles, fiestas, un festival en el ‘gayborhood’, un servicio “INTERFAITH”, la exhibición del documental ‘Gay Pioneers’, y una ceremonia por el 50 aniversario de las manifestaciones LGBT en

Filadelfia”, dijo Lazin. Fue el 4 de julio de 1965, cuando siete mujeres y 33 hombres llevaron a cabo una manifestación por los derechos LGBT en Independence Hall. Las manifestaciones, que se llevaron a cabo cada 4 de julio hasta 1969, pasaron a ser conocidas en la historia como “the annual reminder demonstrations”. Ese mismo año se llevaron a cabo las protestas de Stonewall en Nueva York, que marcaron el inicio del movimiento de liberación LGBT y la lucha por los derechos de esta comunidad. “Es importante saber que hubo una historia LGBT antes de Stonewall. Muchas de las ideas que dieron paso a los disturbios fueron germinadas en Filadelfia”, dijo Bartlett. Por su parte, Lazin agregó que “el movimiento de derechos LGBT se formó en Filadelfia con las manifestaciones de los ‘annual reminders’ y los origins de este movimiento claramente están en Filadelfia”. Si en un principio los participantes fueron cuidadosos a la hora en su forma de presentarse, los hombres vestían traje y las mujeres vestidos para verse “normales”, según recordó Bello, en la última de estas marchas “querían verse gay”. “Anteriormente nos habíamos presentado como una minoría que requería los mismos derechos pero como esto no sucedió hubo que llevar la lucha al siguiente nivel”, dijo Bello. “En la última marcha queríamos dejar en claro que estábamos aquí y que no íbamos a pretender ser otra cosa más que gay, que éramos parte de la sociedad y que merecíamos los mismos derechos que cualquier otra persona”. Bello recuerda que en un principio el movimiento estaba consciente que el cambio tomaría tiempo. “En el 65 los organizadores de las manifestaciones en Independence Hall sabían que las posibilidades de lograr un cambio eran prácticamente nulas”, dijo Bello. “Sabían que iban a ser ignorados pero creían que sus ideas eran las correctas”. Aunque ella considera que en los últimos años ha habido una aceleración en el progreso en materia de derechos LGBT — que ha quedado evidenciado con abolición de políticas discriminatorias como “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), la Ley de Defensa del Matrimonio (DOMA), y con la creciente legalización de matrimonio gay en cada vez más estados de la nación — aun hay mucho por hacer. “Aun no tenemos protecciones a nivel nacional contra la discriminación de empleo”, dijo Bello. “Filadelfia tiene una ordenanza de igualdad de derechos pero no el estado de Pensilvania”. Por otra parte, ella forma parte de la iniciativa LGBTEI, que aboga por los intereses de personas LGBT de la tercera edad. “Proveemos información a agencias que trabajan con personas de la tercera edad sobre las necesidades de los ancianos LGBT que no siempre se sienten cómodos diciendo que son gay”, dijo Bello. “Para quienes están en un asilo de ancianos esto puede implicar distintas restricciones, y quienes están enfermos y requieren cuidado pueden enfrentar barreras con respecto a su pareja si no están casados, lo cual también tiene un impacto tremendo cuando se trata de Medicaid”.

Cuando él se unió a los Marines en 1990 aun se les preguntaba a los interesaos sobre su orientación sexual. Quienes respondían que eran homosexuales quedaban automáticamente descalificados. “Yo mentí en mi solicitud por-

que sabía que era gay”, dijo Alva. En 1994, el presidente Bill Clinton implementó la política Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), como un compromiso por aceptar a homosexuales en las fuerzas armadas aunque este implicaba que tenían prohibido hablar al respecto. “Esto significó que si eras gay no podías decir nada al respecto”, dijo Alva. “La ley obligó a individuos como yo a seguir mientiéndo sobre quiénes éramos. Si uno de tus compañeros Marines te preguntaba por qué no tenías novia y nunca tenías una cita en-

tonces más valía que estuvieras preparado para mentir porque si empezaban a sospechar podías perder tu trabajo”. Aun así a lo largo de su carrera de 13 años en la que formó parte de ocho unidades distintas hubo varios amigos Marines a quienes les confió que era gay. “Cada vez que le decía a alguien, siempre estaban cómodos al respecto, y me decían que seguía siendo como un hermano para ellos”, dijo Alva. En 2003, Alva estaba al frente de una misión cuando pisó una mina explosiva y perdió una pierna. “Si tenías pareja ni siquiera podías ponerlo como contacto de emergencia en caso de que te pasara algo”, dijo Alva. En el 2008, Alva participó en una audiencia en la Cámara de Representantes sobre DADT. No fue hasta el 2011 que la ley fue abolida. Él considera que pese a los logros aun hay mucho por hacer cuando se trata de la gente LGBT en las fuerzas armadas. “En las Fuerzas Armadas utilizamos el término ‘misión cumplida’, pero cuando se trata de la igualdad de las personas LGBT en las Fuerzas Armadas, la misión no ha sido cumplida”, dijo Alva, quien considera que la próxima frontera tiene que ver con las personas transgénero. Por otra parte, hizo un llamado por hacer frente de manera

retroactiva a los miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas que perdieron su trabajo debido a su orientación sexual. “A esas personas que sirvieron a nuestro país les han sido robados sus derechos”, dijo Alva. Fernando Chang Muy es profesor de ley en la Universidad de Pensilvania. Él y su pareja fueron parte de la demanda que llevó a la legalización del matrimonio homosexual en Pensilvania en el 2014. “Estamos orgullosos de haber formado parte de esa demanda que logró la igualdad de matrimonio para los gays en Pensilvania”, dijo Chang Muy, inmigrante cubano de raíces chinas. Su fotografía, al lado de su esposo y su hija, forma parte de la exhibición en el NCC. “Conocí a mi compañero cuando estaba en la escuela de leyes en la década de los ochenta. Llevamos juntos 34 años, y hace 21 años adoptamos a nuestra hija, pero no nos casamos hasta el año pasado, luego de que ganamos la demanda en Pensilvania”. Chang Muy, quien además es abogado de inmigración, habló sobre los logros que han habido en materia de inmigración se trata de la comunidad LGBT. “Hasta hace apenas unos años, el ser gay no es considerada una razón para que una persona no pueda ser admitida a este país”, dijo Chang Muy. Por otra parte, a raíz de la abolición de la Ley de Defensa del Matrimonio en 2013, los ciudadanos estadounidenses que están casados con personas de su mismo sexo nacidas en otro país, pueden patrocinar a su pareja para que obtenga su residencia estadounidense. “La discriminación contra las personas LGBT en materia de inmigración han disminuido pero todavía existen muchos retos”, dijo Chang Muy. Entre ellos mencionó los retos que enfrentan las personas LGBT que enfrentan persecución en su país de origen debido a su orientación sexual y su identidad de género, y que buscan asilo o refugio en EE.UU. Por otra parte, los retos que enfrentan los inmigrantes transgénero que son llevados a un centro de detención, y que no siempre son puestos en instalaciones de acuerdo al género con el que se identifican. “Han habido muchos avances pero aun hay un largo camino por la igualdad”, dijo Chang Muy. “Espero que en la generación de mi hija y las generación es por venir haya mayor igualdad y justicia tanto para las comunidades LGBT e inmigrantes”.

ANA GAMBOA anag@aldianews.com uando el artista mexicano César Viveros supo que podría ser elegido para desarrollar un mural en honor del papa Francisco, no tenía idea sí sería seleccionado. Sin embargo, Viveros tenía en claro una sola cosa: Cuenta con la suficiente inspiración para hacerlo realidad. El Encuentro Mundial de las Familias y la organización Mural Arts Program anunciaron la semana pasada que Viveros dirigirá el desarrollo de un mural de 4.239 pies cuadrados en honor a la histórica visita del papa Francisco a Filadelfia en septiembre próximo. “Durante el proceso de se-

lección mostré a los organizadores imágenes que hablan sobre la familia. Cómo los padres pueden influir en la vida de sus hijos”, dijo Viveros. “Lo que se aprende en la niñez influye en gran medida en el futuro”. Inspirado por el tema central del Encuentro Mundial de las Familias “Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive”, el mural se titula “The Sacred Now: Faith and Family in the 21st Century”. El proyecto será plasmado en las paredes externas de la escuela St. Malachy, ubicada en el norte de Filadelfia. De acuerdo con la visión del artista, el mural será creado a partir de 153 paneles individuales que miden 5 pies de ancho por 5 pies de alto que abarcarán tres secciones del

edificio. Según Viveros, el mural tiene como objetivo capturar el impacto de “la relación, la interacción, las acciones, la inclusión, la compasión, y cada momento de la vida que nos da la oportunidad de compartir quienes somos al vivir esta misión de amor”. El artista nació en el estado mexicano de Veracruz y ha vivido en Filadelfia durante casi 18 años. En su carrera como muralista ha desarrollado más de 30 proyectos por la ciudad. “El muralismo aquí es una profesión noble, es un trabajo duro. Pero también es la oportunidad de prestar un servicio y ser la voz de los que no tienen voz”, declaró a AL DÍA en 2009. Durante la conferencia de prensa realizada el 29 de mayo, Viveros declaró que uno de sus proyectos más importantes fue la colaboración que realizó con reos del Instituto Correccional Estatal en Graterford, un mural llamado Healing Walls. “Creo

que ese mural dio visibilidad a los presos. Mi trabajo principalmente se centra en los grupos marginados que no tienen visibilidad o voz propia“, dijo Viveros. “Este proyecto supera todo lo que he hecho en el pasado. Es la madre de todos los murales”, dijo Viveros. “Los niños me inspiraron. Me recuerdan a los días en que mi madre me enseñó a creer en algo mucho más grande, que con humildad uno puede convertirse en parte de algo tan grande como el universo”. Agregó que muchas de las imágenes en el mural incluyen a niños rezando porque cree que “es importante que uno crezca con fe, independientemente de la religión. La fe te mantiene vivo, te da la certeza de que siempre hay esperanza para una vida mejor o para un mundo mejor”, dijo Viveros.

El proyecto se llevará a cabo través de una técnica colaborativa. Cada panel del mural será pintado de forma individual. Organizadores del proyecto alentaron a los miembros de la comunidad a participar en el desarrollo a través de sesiones públicas o ‘Paint Days’. El primer taller de pintura se llevó a cabo el martes 2 de junio en las instalaciones de la escuela St. Malachy.

Soñar ayuda a modificar los prejuicios sociales EFE Los prejuicios sociales más enraizados, como el racismo o el sexismo, pueden reducirse durante el sueño, según un estudio en el que un grupo de voluntarios aprendieron nuevos patrones de pensamiento y los fijaron en su cerebro mientras dormían. El estudio, realizado por expertos de las universidades estadounidenses de Evanston, Austin y Princenton, apoya las recientes investigaciones que demuestran que los recuerdos pueden reactivarse de manera selectiva y fortalecerlos durante el sueño. Los científicos saben que dormir potencia la formación de la memoria al resucitar cierta actividad de las neuronas formada durante los periodos de vigilia y este proceso puede estimularse experimentalmente dando, cuando se duerme, ejemplos relacionados con cosas que acaban de aprenderse. Ahora, el doctor Xiaoquing Hu y un grupo de investigadores han demostrado que ese método no sólo funciona con la información recién aprendida, sino que puede influir en actitudes implícitas interiorizadas durante la infancia, según un articulo publicado en Science. Aunque muchas personas apoyan la igualdad y la tolerancia, los prejuicios sociales pueden seguir operativos en el cerebro y llevarlas a realizar acciones negativas de manera inconsciente, señala el estudio. En experimentos realizados con videojuegos de visión subjetiva los participantes, independientemente de

su raza, tendían a disparar más a personas negras que a blancas, mientras que en instituciones que buscaban ayudantes de investigación el equipo docente -tanto hombres como mujerestendían a contratar hombres, aunque las candidatas estuvieran igual de cualificadas. Si bien “en los últimos años la tendencia a mostrar actitudes racistas o sexistas ha disminuido, los prejuicios sociales pueden influir en el comportamiento de las personas de una manera inconsciente o implícita a pesar de sus intenciones o esfuerzos para evitarlos”, agrega. El estudio realizado por Hu y su equipo partió de descubrimientos recientes los cuales sugieren que la consolidación de la memoria durante el sueño pueden ser esencial para fijar la información aprendida en el periodo previo de vigilia y se centraron en contrarrestar prejuicios de raza y género.

Un estudio con 40 voluntarios

A un grupo de 40 voluntarios se les mostraron fotografías de hombres y mujeres de diferentes razas y aprendieron a asociarlas con características opuestas a los prejuicios. Así, identificaron los rostros femeninos con palabras relacionadas con la ciencia o a los hombres negros con palabras “buenas” y cada una de esas asociaciones se vincularon a un sonido. Después de ese “aprendizaje” los voluntarios durmieron durante 90 minutos, durante los cuales se repitió uno de esos sonidos, elegido aleatoriamente, para reactivar la asociación de

Tanto después de despertar como una semana más tarde, el equipo comprobó que algunos prejuicios sociales implícitos de los voluntarios se habían reducido y estos eran lo que habían asociado al sonido que escucharon dormidos. Durante el sueño, la información que el cerebro acaba de almacenar puede integrarse con otra ya existente y transformarse en representaciones estables a través de un sistema conocido como consolidación. Los mecanismos de esa transformación se cree que involucran la reactivación repetida de la información, especialmente en el sueño, lo que lleva a una mejora del rendimiento de la memoria una vez despiertos. El equipo señala que hacen falta nuevas investigaciones para tratar cuestiones como cuánto entrenamiento es necesario para que los beneficios implícitos persistan y se conviertan en beneficios explícitos en las relaciones interpersonales o si el método se puede adaptar para ayudar a la gente a cambiar hábitos como fumar.

El resultado es un pagina web, especialmente dirigida a jóvenes residentes en Pensilvania y menores de 18 años, en la que recopilan información legal sobre temas como la privacidad médico-paciente, el embarazo, los métodos anticonceptivos, las enfermedades de transmisión sexual, el acoso, las enfermedades mentales o el abuso de sustancias como el alcohol o las drogas. Además, ‘Your Body, Your Rights’ también aborda temas y problemáticas de actualidad en el entorno adolescente como el ‘sexting’ (envío de mensajes con contenido sexual) o el conocido como ‘dating violence’ (el comportamiento o conducta abusiva con la intención de ejercer un dominio sobre la pareja). La web recopila desde la legislación actual que regula estas prácticas o abusos hasta teléfonos o platarformas a las que pueden recurrir las víctimas. También incluye una guía sobre el uso de las redes sociales. Por último, esta organización, fundada en 1929 por la hija de una víctima de un aborto ilegal, ofrece diversos números y lugares de contacto para todos aquellos usuarios que necesiten ayuda; así como historias contadas por otros adolescentes o noticias de actualidad.

Bastaron seis segundos ¿C ómo evitar que se formen los tornados? Imposible. No hay forma de prevenirlos; los tornados son fenómenos naturales. Hasta la fecha no se conoce mecanismo alguno para disipar o evitar la formación de huracanes o tornados. Lo que sí puede hacerse es predecir la trayectoria de un huracán y alertar a la población cercana para que pueda protegerse. Les llaman “Supercélulas” a las nubes más poderosas y destructivas que existen en la tierra: una inmensa tormenta en rotación. Pueden durar varias horas o unos segundos. Estas tormentas son las más propensas a producir tornados de larga duración y pedazos de granizo del tamaño de una naranja. El cielo se va oscureciendo y las nubes comienzan a girar como si fuesen un remolino. Los tornados son el fenómeno climático más destructivo y poderoso del mundo. Estos pueden variar en intensidad y alcanzar velocidades de viento de 480 Kms. por hora por 75 metros de ancho. Los tornados con grado 5 en la escala de Fujita pueden destruir edificios y arrastrar zonas de pastos y sembradíos sobre troncos de árboles y postes telefónicos. El tornado

Estos materiales químicos quedan expuestos luego de un tornado contaminando agua y suelo, creando un ambiente sumamente tóxico en ríos y lagos que afectan la flora y la fauna de la región durante años. de este país dan luz verde para apresar y extraditar a aquellos individuos que infringen las leyes norteamericanas. En este momento, los 14 dirigentes corruptos están en camino hacia las cortes norteamericanas para enfrentar sus ofensas. Los dirigentes de la FIFA sentían ser los intocables y amos del futbol. Nadie los tocaba y nadie los controlaba. Se reían a carcajadas cuando los acusaban por corrupción o malversación de fondos. Hoy, gracias a las leyes norteamericanas, estos delincuentes de cuello blanco ya no gozan de impunidad. uando Hillary Clinton anunció que Lorella Praeli sería la directora de participación latina de la campaña, el anuncio produjo una mezcla de reacciones —“Hillary Clinton recluta a una Dreamer”, “La campaña de Hillary contrata a una ex Dreamer” y “Hillary contrata a una ex ilegal como directora de participación latina”. Es imposible saber qué mensaje estaba tratando de enviar Clinton al contratar a Preaeli, ex directora del grupo de apoyo United We Dream quien actualmente tiene estatus legal de residente permanente. Quizás Clinton simplemente quería a alguien en su gabinete que estuviera familiarizada con las dificultades de los inmigrantes sin papeles.
