Jim Kenney and the vision of coalition
J
im Kenney swept the Democratic primaries for mayor May 19. His victory is a testament not only to his own capacity and determination, but to the power of his coalition building. It was always understood that the former councilman would have union support, but the strength of Kenney’s campaign came in coalition — with young progressives and education advocates; with immigration and LGBTQ groups; with members of Philadelphia’s African American community. Kenney’s vision was one of a unified Philadelphia: “From my childhood home of South Philly all the way up to the Northwest, people of every neighborhood — all came together behind this effort. And make no mistake, it was that unity that made us victorious. We could not have accomplished so much in such a short time without all of us working together.” Though Kenney still has to face Republican Melissa MurrayBailey in the mayoral election November 3, the ratio of Democratic
to Republican voters in the city favors him. Still, in another show of unexpected coalition, Kenney and Murray-Bailey broke with tradition and made their first appearance after primary victories together, at a fundraiser for the Broad Street Ministry, where they addressed the “importance of an all-inclusive approach to city leadership.” For some Latinos, Kenney’s victory was bittersweet given that for the first time in its history, Philadelphia had a Latino mayoral candidate on the ballot. But Kenney had a good Latino following of his own — especially because of his work on immigration issues during his tenure at City Council — and through his connection with LUPE (Latinos United for Political Empowerment), who endorsed him as mayor. “#MyMayor!” exulted one member of our readership on her Facebook page. We extend our congratulations to Kenney for his resounding victory, and we look forward — in the months leading up to the November election — to hearing more about his vision for coalition and unity in the city.

Votantes ejercieron derecho al voto Aunque el juez Nelson Díaz no logró ser electo alcalde, tanto la jueza Mia Perez como la concejal María Quiñones Sánchez salieron invictas en las elecciones. REDACCIÓN AL DÍA Tras una ardúa jornada electoral y mucha expectiva los primeros resultados de la elección primaria en Filadelfia comenzaron a ser publicados después de las 8:00 p.m. En la contienda por la alcaldía James Kenney llevó la delantera desde un inicio, con una buena ventaja sobre el resto de los candidatos. Hasta el cierre de esta edición el 98 por ciento de los precintos habían totalizado sus resultados. Kenney, concejal de City Hall durante 23 años, fue uno de los últimos candidatos en formalizar su entrada en la carrera hacia la alcaldía a comienzos de este año. Tras una campaña de lo más feroz, ha superado en número de votos a sus oponentes: el senador Anthony Hardy Williams, la ex fiscal general de Filadelfia Lynne M. Abraham, el antiguo juez de la Corte de Quejas Comunes Nelson A. Diaz, el ex ejecutivo de PGW Doug Oliver, y el ex senador T. Milton Street Sr.; consiguiendo incluso más votos que los de todos sus contrincantes combinados. Con el 98 por ciento de los votos contados, Williams se convertiría en el segundo con más de 60.000 votos; menos de la mitad que los 128.000 de Kenney.
Abraham ocupó el tercer lugar con 19.320 u 8 por ciento de los votos, seguida por Oliver con 9792 o el 4 por ciento. El juez Nelson Díaz, candidato que hizo historia al ser el primer latino en aparecer en la boleta electoral como candidato a alcalde, ocupó el quinto lugar de los resultados recaudando 8.549 o lo que es igual a 3,7 por ciento, según la Oficina de los Comisionados de Filadelfia. “El progreso es proceso. Esto no es una derrota —es un paso hacia una mejor Filadelfia”, dijo Díaz durante su celebración de campaña tras los resultados de las elecciones. “Estoy orgulloso de haber tomado este paso”. Al día siguiente Díaz tuiteó el siguiente mensaje antes de desactivar su cuenta de Twitter: “Quiero agradecer a los que fueron a votar ayer y a todos los que me han apoyado a lo largo de este gran viaje. A seguir ¡Adelante!”, dijo Díaz. Milton Street quedó en último lugar con 3.887 o 1,6 por ciento de votos.

LA CONCEJAL DEL DIstrito Siete María Quiñones-Sánchez, vivió momentos de incertidumbre en una reñida contienda contra su retador Manny Morales, pero finalmente resultó vencedora, y celebró con familia y quienes la apoyan. convertirse en el candidato más votado de la abarrotada carrera al Concejo Municipal. La victoria tres a dos de los nuevos contendientes frente a los ya electos en el Concejo ha sido un resultado inesperado. El adinerado Domb gastó millones de dólares en su propia campaña mientras que Helen Gym contaba con una coalición de apoyo sin precedentes para un nuevo candidato. Aspirantes tan pregonados como Sherrie Cohen o Paul Steinke se quedaron varios miles de votos lejos de la nominación. Los cinco demócratas se enfrentarán en la elecciones generales de noviembre a otros tantos republicanos: los ya concejales

Perez se convierte en juez

En febrero en una entrevista con AL DÍA, Perez habló sobre la falta de representación latina en las cortes. “Tenemos pisos enteros de nuestro centro de justicia criminal dedicados a la división este de Filadelfia”, afirmó. “Entonces. ¿por qué tenemos solo a la jueza (Angeles) Roca en la corte familiar y a la jueza (Tere-
sa) Sarmina en la división civil. Esto es lo que tenemos que hacer entender a los votantes”. Y parece que lo consiguió. Con el 98 por ciento de los distritos electorales de voto reportados, Perez ha conseguido, al menos, el 3,8 por ciento de los apoyos. El número quizá no parezca muy alto, pero hay que recordar que en la votación a juez los votantes tenían que escoger

Sánchez victoriosa de nuevo
Después de un primer recuento electoral, la concejal del Distrito Siete Maria D. QuiñonesSánchez ha asegurado su asiento para un nuevo mandato. Al inicio del conteo su contrincante Manny Morales tomó una ventaja temprana, pero Sánchez rápidamente ganó la mayoría de los votos del distrito. Fue una batalla. Pero con el 98 por ciento de los votos escrutados, la concejal tiene confirmada su reelección con el 54 por ciento de los votos. La concejal convivió con sus seguidores en una celebración tras los resultados de las elecciones. “Hoy ha sido un día muy duro”, dijo Sánchez. “Sabíamos que teníamos un rival desesperado.” La contienda por el Distrito Siete ha sido uno de los más controvertidos de esta temporada electoral. Una vez más el Partido Demócrata se negó a respaldar a Sánchez, favoreciendo a Morales. En marzo, la campaña de Sánchez publicó más de 50 páginas con imágenes antiinmigrantes, publicaciones racistas y homofóbicas presuntamente de la página personal de Facebook de su retador. Sin haber comprobado que su cuenta fue hackeada, Morales perdió apoyo formal del partido demócrata pero decidió continuar en campaña. Sin duda una de las contiendas más reñidas, Morales acumuló 5.589 o 46 por ciento de los votos.
Orden judicial exige cesar la distribución de las boletas “ilegales” en el Distrito Siete
Durante las elecciones la concejal María Quiñones-Sánchez dijo a AL DÍA News que su equipo de campaña presentó un mandamiento juidicial contra LUPE (Latinos United for Political Empowerment), grupo que apoyó a Morales. La orden judicial afirmó que los equipos de trabajo de LUPE estaban distribuyendo “papeletas ilegales” que no incluían el requisito de “pagado por” que los materiales producidos por los esfuerzos electoralistas deben soportar. Un juez de la Corte de Quejas Comunes concedió una orden judicial e instruyó a los funcionarios de la Oficina del Sheriff Filadelfia confiscar las boletas. Según el portavoz de QuiñonesSánchez, Anthony Campisi, tan pronto como se retiraron dichas boletas, se produjeron otras irregularidades pero aún carecen de la revelación requerida por el Código Electoral Pensilvania — que dio lugar a una nueva visita al Tribunal de Quejas Comunes para una extensión a la orden judicial original. Basta con salir a la calle para comprobar que las estadísticas que la sitúan en el primer puesto de la lista de ciudades estadounidenses de más de un millón habitantes con mayor número de usuarios de bicicleta, no se equivocan. Sin embargo, y pese a la gran oleada de ciclistas que circulan por sus calles, tampoco pasa inadvertida la todavía necesaria adaptación de Filadelfia a las necesidades de aquellos que circulan sobre dos ruedas.
La pregunta entonces, parece obligada. ¿Por qué los habitantes de Filadelfia, aún sin la estructura necesaria, optan por moverse en bici? Street Films trata de responderla recorriendo la ciudad en compañía del director ejecutivo de Bike Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Alex Doty; preguntando a los que mejor pueden saberlo: los usuarios de bicicleta. Celebran cultura huejotzinga en South Philly ANA GAMBOA anag@aldianews.com A una semana de haber celebrado la novena edición del Carnaval San Mateo Carnavalero, la comunidad poblana y huejotzinga que radica en Filadelfia estuvo de placemes al recibir la visita del presidente municipal del ayuntamiento de Huejotzingo, municipio en el estado de Puebla en el que nació el icónico carnaval. El presidente municipal Carlos Alberto Morales Álvarez visitó la Costa Este durante la primera semana de mayo para recorrer las distintas áreas en las que se ha desarrollado, no solo la comunidad de Huejotzingo, sino también la gran tradición del carnaval. “Estamos orgullosos de estar aquí con el otro Huejotzingo. El Huejotzingo que viajó hace décadas para encontrar mejores horizontes, y estamos muy agradecidos por la bienvenida que recibimos”, dijo Morales en entrevista con AL DÍA. Desde el año pasado gran parte de la comunidad que radica en los estados de Nueva Jersey, Pensilvania y Nueva York invitó a miembros del gobierno municipal de Huejotzingo a visitar el área. El propósito de la visita fue poder ver cómo ha florecido la cultura del Carnaval de Huejotzingo, el más importante del Estado de Puebla, en las ciudades de Filadelfia, así como Camden y Passaic en Nueva Jersey. Descrito como un municipio con mucha historia y riqueza cultural, no solamente por su carnaval, sino por sus raíces
prehispanicas. “Es un municipio milenario”, dijo Morales. El Carnaval de Huejotzingo este año celebró en México su edición 147 en colaboración con el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA). El año pasado contó con la visita de 28 estados de la República Mexicana, la visita de seis paísdes de Latinoamérica, y la visita de cuatro países de Europa. Durante su visita a Estados Unidos Morales resaltó la importancia de las tradiciones de Huejotzingo, ya que dijo, han traspasado fronteras. Un día después de su visita en el sur de Filadelfia, el presidente municipal viajó a Passaic el pasado 10 de Mayo para celebrar la Representación de la Batalla del 5 de Mayo durante la conmemoración del carnalva en dicha ciudad. Durante la celebración participaron más de 300 danzantes, mientras que la organización local “Mi Casa es Puebla” montó una exposición de trajes del Carnaval de Huejotzingo. Para Morales, el Carnaval de Huejotzingo es único en el mundo. “Es la conmemoración de la Batalla de Puebla aunada a historias ficticias que son parte de la vox populi de los huejotzingas. Y por supuesto también es un carnaval único porque se utilizan mosquetones (armas artesanales), que se van detonando durante todo el desfile”, dijo Morales. Morales también tuvo encuentros con la cónsul de México en Nueva York y Patricia Ruiz Navarro, directora de “Mi Casa es Puebla”, con quienes analizó la situación de los inmigrantes.

Mabel McFiggan, una habitante de esta localidad situada al este del país, pasa a la historia al convertirse en la primera ciudadana estadounidense en pagar su compra en un supermercado mediante lo que en el

aquel momento se apodó como ‘food stamps’ o cupones de comida. Filadelfia (Pensilvania), 18 de mayo de 2015. Amada Mejía pasa por la caja de su supermercado habitual en North Filadelfia abonando su compra con su tarjeta Access, la versión modernizada y actualizada de los cupones de comida. Prácticamente 76 años separan a Mabel y a Amada. Los mismos que se cumplen desde que el Ministerio de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos comenzó a desarrollar su programa de asistencia a la nutrición para aquellos ciudadanos de recursos limitados. Una inicitiva que cumplió su primer medio siglo de vida en el 2014, ya que, aunque el de McFiggan fue el primer vestigio,
no se oficializó hasta 1964, cuando el presidente Johnson firmó el Food Stamp Act, convirtiéndo en permanente el programa piloto que inició tres años antes (en 1961) la administración Kennedy. Desde entonces, la inciativa ha sufrido un gran número de cambios. En 1974 se extendió a los 50 estados y en el 77 se establecieron estándares nacionales de elegibilidad; mientras que en 1984 la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías propició un cambio de formato, de los clásicos cupones al Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) —como curiosidad, la primera compra con este nuevo método se realizó en Pensilvania, concretamente en un supermercado de la localidad de Reading—. Se inauguraba así
el sistema que hoy usan los más de 46 millones de ciudadanos, entre ellos Amada, que, de media, se beneficiaron durante el pasado año 2014 del rebautizado como Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program en el 2008, y popularmente conocido, por sus siglas en inglés , como SNAP. Según datos del Food Assistance Landscape, un tercio del presupuesto del Ministerio de Agricultura se destinó a los programas de asistencia a la nutrición, entre ellos SNAP, que en 2014 redujo su presupuesto un 7,5 por ciento, respecto al 2013. COMPRANDO | Viene de 10 más en saltar a la primera línea de actualidad. Lo hicieron el pasado mes de abril, cuando el cocinero Mario Batali lanzó el reto #FoodBankNYCChallenge; con el que instaba al mundo a tratar de comprar comida con el mismo presupuesto del que disponen de media aquellos que adquieren sus alimentos con ‘food stamps’ en Nueva York: unos $29 semanales. La actriz Gwyneth Paltrow aceptó un reto que, no solo completó —admitió su derrota tras cuatro días—, sino que la convirtió en blanco de críticas. Su polémica lista de la compra, en la que figuraban alimentos como una docena de huevos, varias limas, arroz integral, un tomate, una cebolla, un aguacate, ajos, un paquete de guisantes, kale, lechuga, tortillas de trigo etc, nos invitó a ir un poco más allá y plantearnos: ¿qué es lo que compran con su asignación los millones de ciudadanos para los que rendirse (como en el caso de Paltrow) no es una opción? y ¿es la cantidad que reciben suficiente?

Para ello, acompañamos a Amada Mejía, una colombiana de 80 años que reside en North Philly, a la compra. Esta vitalista y alegre latina, que llegó a Estados Unidos desde su Medellín natal hace más de cuatro décadas, cuenta que recibe SNAP desde que se mudó de New Jersey a Filadelfia 26 años atrás. La zona de la verdura, donde compra cebollas, es su primera parada. Después se dirige a la carnicería, ya que, según asegura, el pollo (junto con la leche y el queso) es algo que nunca falta en su carro de la compra. Este día también compra té y fruta, concretamente unos mangos y peras. Mejía reconoce “arreglarse” con los aproximadamente $89 que recibe al mes en concepto de SNAP. Aunque al ser preguntada por la idea de perder esta ayuda, no duda: “me hace falta”. Más drástica ante la idea de no percibir SNAP se muestra una puertorriqueña de 65 años que prefiere no desvelar su nombre. “Eso sería catastrófico porque estoy en una edad en la que por mi salud no puedo mantenerme”. Cuenta que, con los $68 que le corresponden (aclara que an-

tes recibía algo más, pero se lo bajaron) y que “hay que estirar mucho”, da prioridad a la compra de fruta, verduras y leche. Tampoco suelen faltar en su lista arroz y habichuelas. Dos alimentos, estos últimos, que también son imprescindibles para Aida Concepción. De herencia puertorriqueña pero originaria de New Jersey, ella vive con sus tres hijos de 11, 8 y 3 años en Filadelfia desde hace cuatro años. “No pueden faltar el arroz y las habichuelas, a ellos les gusta bastante porque es la comida de Puerto Rico y ellos nacieron allí todos”. Los cuatro reciben, dependiendo del mes, entre $350 y $400. Una cantidad con la que comprar comida “a veces se hace bien difícil porque a veces no da y aquí es bien cara la comida”, explica Aida Concepción. Según relata, además de dividir el presupuesto en dos (para la primera y la segunda mitad del mes), recorre varios lugares en busca de los precios más bajos y también mira bastante los alimentos que compra. Sin embargo, pese a todo, los SNAP no siempre son suficientes. “A veces hay que añadir. La segunda semana de cada mes que siempre
se acaba la leche, el queso, el pan…A veces no da”. Por todo ello, para su familia los SNAP son imprescindibles, hasta el punto de que asegura que, si tuviera que prescindir de ellos, “me quedo muerta de hambre. Yo ni tanto, porque uno aguanta como sea, pero el problema son los muchachos”. María Ortiz y sus tres hijos de entre 2 y 17 años también particpan en el SNAP, gracias al cual reciben una ayuda de aproximadamente $648 mensuales. ¿Suficiente? “Hasta ahora sí puedo, pero cuando llega la última semana próxima a recibir sí se me hace un poquito corto. Pero por lo menos me da como para unas tres semanas aproximadamente”, explica. En cuanto a los alimentos que componen su carro de la compra, cuenta, “como yo soy una persona bien ocupada compro comida precocinada en su mayoría. También compramos leche, frutas, vegetales; pero por lo general comida de microndas”. Pese a ello, no olvida sus raíces. “Los fines de semana como ya estoy en mi casa pues comienzo a ser bien puertorriqueña”. Y por ello, si hay un

En el condado de Filadelfia, la cifra era de 475.890 personas (lo que equivale a un 31 por ciento de sus residentes). La cantidad recibida oscila entre los $16 (el mínimo) y los $194 (la máxima), cifra que aumentó con respecto al año pasado gracias a un cambio en la normativa. También ha favorecido la eliminación de los ‘asset test’, llevada a cabo el pasado mes de abril por Tom Wolf. Aunque el número de personas que recibe SNAP podría ser mayor, ya que las estadísticas demuestran que no todos los ciudadanos que cumplen los requisitos de elegibilidad solicitan la ayuda. El miedo o el desconocimiento son los motivos principales, según explica Glory Morales, SNAP Helpline Outreach Counselor de Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. “Muchas veces hay muchas personas indocumentadas que tienen un poquito de miedo porque hay ese tabú de que

ARTURO VARELA arturov@aldianews.com l misterio y las conspiraciones que rodean la vida y muerte de Barry Seal, el traficante de drogas y piloto del Cartel de Medellín en la década de los ochenta, inspiró al artista de teatro Thaddeus Phillips a producir un espectáculo que es como una combinación de una obra, un concierto y una instalación, en colaboración con Dj Mario Cotto y el artista de instalación Jeff Becker. La presentación de “The Incredibly Dangerous Astonishing Lucrative and Potentially True Adventures of Barry Seal” se llevó a cabo el pasado fin de semana en Fringe Arts. Si se la perdió, Phillips ya está trabajando en otro espectáculo basado en Seal, cuyo estreno se llevará a cabo en el Fringe Festival 2015 en septiembre. Phillips está bastante familiarizado con la historia de Seal, ya que ha interpretado a este personaje, o mejor dicho a su alias Ellis MacKenzie, en el programa de MundoFox “Alias El Mexicano,” sobre José Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha, uno de los líderes del Cartel de Medelllín junto con Pablo Escobar y los hermanos Ochoa. Seal inició su carrera como el piloto más joven de TWA, desarrolló las rutas de tráfico del Cartel de Medellín, y trabajó en el caso Irán-Contra— el escándalo político durante el gobierno de Reagan, en el que funcionarios de alto rango de la administración facilitaron en secreto la venta de armas a Irán, cuando el país estaba sujeto a un embargo de armas. “The Incredibly Dangerous…. El cine español más contemporáneo se estrena en Nueva York LUCÍA TEJO luciat@aldianews.com Desde el profesor español, fan incondicional de John Lennon, que utilizaba las canciones de los Beatles para enseñar inglés en la España de los sesenta y al que da vida el actor español Javier Cámara en la película ganadora de varios Goya ‘Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados’; hasta el dúo de amigos africanos que llega a Europa, captado por un ojeador, con la promesa de convertirse en astros del balón en el filme ‘Diamantes negros’. Las mejores y más recientes historias contadas por el cine ‘made in Spain’ llegan a Nueva York de la mano del ciclo ‘Contemporáneos. Plural Spanish Cinema’. La inciativa, lanzada por el Instituto Cervantes y celebrada del 13 de mayo al 17 de junio, acerca cinco filmes con una temática de lo más variopinta, pero con un vínculo común, el talento cinematográfico español. La primera de las proyecciones ha sido ‘Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados’, una obra del conocido cineasta español David Trueba. Ambientada en la España de 1966, la cinta recrea
el atípico viaje que emprende un maestro para conocer a su ídolo (Lennon), quien en ese momento se encuentra rodando una película en la localidad española de Almeria (sur de España). La cinta, que inauguró este proyecto el pasado 13 de mayo, fue galardonada con seis estatuillas en la edición XXVIII de los premios del cine español, los Goya: mejor película, mejor actor principal, mejor actriz revelación, mejor director, mejor guión original y mejor música original. El segundo de los títulos españoles que integra el ciclo ‘Contemporáneos. Plural Spanish Cinema’ es ‘Diamantes Negros’, su director Miguel Alcantud narra la aventura de Amadou y Moussa, dos amigos que viajan desde Mali a España para convertirse en jóvenes promesas del fútbol. Su viaje, sin embargo, les descubre las sombras de un deporte que los ve, como bien define su título, como ‘diamantes negros’. La película fue proyectada el miércoles 12 de mayo. La próxima entrega de esta iniciativa tendrá lugar el próximo 3 de junio, día en el que se proyec-

Esos pequeños motores que acompañan a muchos carros de hot dog, bagels o comida halal y que les permiten tener su propia fuente de electricidad. Un proyecto piloto de la compañía emergente local MOVE Systems, gracias al apoyo eco-
nómico a un grupo de donantes privados, llevará a la ciudad de Nueva York 500 vehículos para la venta de comida que funcionarán de una forma parecida a la de un automóvil híbrido. Usarán energía solar, gas natural y además podrán ser cargados gracias a sus baterías, lo que se traducirá en un importante ahorro para sus dueños. Según sus creadores “este sistema no es sólo más limpio y más tranquilo, también es más potente y fiable”. Se espera que los nuevos carritos tomen las calles tras el fin de semana de Memorial Day.

PILAR C. CASI pilarc@aldianews.com Kevin Moore estaba durmiendo cuando la mañana del 12 de abril su tío le avisó de que la policía había parado a su amigo Freddy Gray. Al salir a la calle, Moore le grabó gritanto de dolor mientras los agentes lo llevaban a rastras hasta la furgoneta. Una semana después, Gray fallecía de las lesiones que sufrió en su columna vertebral durante su custodia policial. Varios años antes, en 2012, un vídeo de Youtube captaba a un detective de Filadelfia golpeando a una mujer, Aida Guzmán, durante el Desfile Boricua. En ambos casos las imágenes se viralizaron, y mientras en Baltimore les ha costado en-
frentar cargos de homicidios, el agresor de Filadelfia fue despedido y expulsado del cuerpo de seguridad local (a pesar de que meses más tarde, se reincorporó al servicio).

uando habla de la inmigración, el gobernador de Wisconsin, Scott Walker, se está volviendo famoso por su torpeza. En semanas recientes, Walker cambió de opinión, manejó datos incorrectos e hizo demagogia con los extremistas. Durante un reciente viaje a Iowa, el probable candidato presidencial republicano para 2016 hizo todo eso. Durante una entrevista con un sitio web conservador, preguntaron a Walker qué debe hacerse con la inmigración. Walker respondió: “Un número de cosas. Seguridad en la frontera por supuesto. A diferencia de este presidente, yo fui en realidad a la frontera y estuve allí con el gobernador de Texas”. Pero durante una reunión en 2013 con la junta editorial del Wausau Daily Herald, el gobernador expresó: “Se oye a alguna gente que habla de la seguridad de la frontera y de una muralla y todo eso. Para mí, no me parece que es necesario todo eso si se cuenta con una manera mejor, más sana de permitir que la gente entre en el país en primer lugar”. Ahora, al empezar con el punto de la seguridad fronteriza, Walker está en pleno modo demagógico y suena mucho como “alguna gente”. Su capacidad de amar y perdonar es inmensa. ¿Cuántas veces los niños golpeados y maltratados por los adultos olvidan todo, secan sus lágrimas en la almohada, y
al día siguiente con una sonrisa levantan sus brazos y confían de nuevo? La esperanza en los niños es como el sol: deja atrás las tinieblas y nace una y otra vez, a pesar de los huracanes y de las tormentas. Un niño te dice: “fallé tres veces”, mientras un adulto que falla tres veces se considera a sí mismo un fracasado. Cuántas cosas podemos aprender de los niños y, sin embargo, los adultos creemos que les enseñamos. Y enseñar es sensibilizar: a las palabras, las ideas, los problemas, la angustia, a la humanidad, y al universo entero. ¿Será por eso que Jesús de Nazareth dijo: “si no os hacéis como niños no entraréis en el reino de los cielos”?
Josephine S. Chavez, una lectora de mis columnas, recientemente me escribió señalando algo que a menudo se pierde en la conversación general de la adquisición del inglés. Dijo: “Pienso que estamos dañando nuestra cultura al no enseñar a nuestros hijos y nietos a hablar español. Saber dos lenguas es como tener lo mejor de dos mundos.” No podría estar más de acuerdo. Debido a las severas complicaciones de mis hijos durante el nacimiento, y algunos inquietantes retrasos de desarrollo, los médicos me aconsejaron utilizar una sola lengua en casa. Eso, y la facilidad de establecer una lengua en una familia en la que el papá no habla español, significa que mis hijos —con gran pesar de mi parte— son monolingües. Las clases de español y los intentos de inmersión no lograron nada, pero aún sigo pinchándolos cada vez que puedo. Imaginen mi deleite el fin de semana pasado, mientras nos dábamos una panzada de TV viendo la serie “Daredevil” de Netflix, cuando pude decir: “¿Ven? ¿Ven? Miren eso —¡Daredevil y Claire Temple hablan perfecto español, el Señor Foggy y su compañero hablan un español decente, Kingpin Wilson Fisk habla mandarín y japonés y el asistente de Kingpin habla por lo menos esos idiomas y ruso!” En el Episodio 8: El gran rival
de la diminuta, pero terrible y malvada, Madame Gao, le pregunta cuántas lenguas habla. Con cara de póquer, pero con una pizca de satisfacción, ella ronronea: “Todas.” Literalmente la aclamé, causando la irritación de mis dos hijos, quienes no tan veladamente lo indicaron con sus ojos y me rogaron que no iniciara otra diatriba más sobre cuanto más sanos, ricos y sabios podrían ser si sólo aprendieran otro idioma. Cualquier otro idioma. En un mundo globalizado e interconectado, ¿quién puede darse el lujo de hablar sólo uno? Si un grupo de héroes de unas historietas que se remontan a los años 60 puede trasmitir el mensaje de la importancia de hablar múltiples lenguas, quizás es un comienzo. Mientras tanto, independientemente de si usted es extranjero o nacido en Estados Unidos, enseñe a sus hijos otra lengua —sí, hasta el esperanto o Klingon funcionan. El Klingon Language Institute dice que es “la lengua de mayor crecimiento en la galaxia—.” Si pudiera empezar de cero, ignoraría el consejo de los médicos y de los especialistas en desarrollo e insistiría en un hogar bilingüe. Hubiera valido la pena un año extra en que los niños no hablaran por toda una vida de poder conversar con otras partes del mundo.

l dominio del inglés continúa aumentando entre los latinos, según un nuevo análisis del Pew Research Center, con una cifra récord de 33,2 millones de hispanos en Estados Unidos que hablan ahora inglés adecuadamente. Ese párrafo no trasmite correctamente mi afán y deleite por el hecho de que una organización oficial, que no adhiere a ningún partido, valide lo que he dicho en los últimos 20 años: los hispanos se asimilarán como cualquier otro grupo inmigrante de esta nación. Tarde o temprano, hablarán inglés de la misma manera en que los inmigrantes irlandeses, italianos y alemanes lo hicieron antes de ellos —todos los cuales fueron temidos y discriminados debido a sus idiomas de origen y sus acentos—. Pero la adquisición del inglés es siempre la crítica más fácil aplicada con gran severidad a los inmigrantes (o a cualquiera que parezca serlo): “Aprenda el idioma.” Hace varios años en el estacionamiento de una biblioteca que había agregado recientemente libros y medios en español para servir a la creciente base de usuarios inmigrantes mexicanos, un señor me dijo, “We no speaky Spanish here.” Le respondí: “Tengo un título de postgrado y yo no ‘espeaky’
estúpido”. La cara de asombro que puso fue impagable. Lo que la mayoría de la gente no parece comprender es que los hispanos han progresado en este frente durante décadas. En 2013, informa Pew, los hispanos que hablaban inglés adecuadamente representaban el 68 por ciento de todos los hispanos de 5 y más años, mientras que en 2000 representaban un 59 por ciento. Pew también señaló que la porción de latinos nacidos en el extranjero que habla inglés adecuadamente no se ha modificado muchos desde 1980, pero sigue siendo aceptable: en 2013, el 34 por ciento de los latinos nacidos en el extranjero, que sumaban 6,5 millones, hablaba inglés adecuadamente, comparado con 1980, cuando la porción representaba el 31 por ciento y sumaba 1,3 millones de personas. Pero no todas fueron buenas noticias. En 2013, el 73 por ciento de los latinos de 5 y más años —que suman una cifra récord de 35,8 millones de personas— dijo que aún habla español en casa, mientras que en 2000 un 78 por ciento lo hacía. El porcentaje de declive en 13 años aún es relativamente pequeño, pero sería una lástima que los hispanos se americanizaran hasta el punto de convertirse cada vez más en monolingües.
