El legado de Rizzo: ¿se merece una estatua? Tras los trágicos acontecimientos de Charlottesville, Filadelfia se unió a las ciudades que se plantean la remoción de monumentos de líderes que pasaron a la historia por su ideología de odio y racista. Sin embargo, tal y como sucedió en la pequeña ciudad de Virginia, la polémica empieza a sentirse en la calle. MÓNICA ZORRILLA

l segundo fin de semana de agosto reunió en Charlottesville, Virginia, a un desconcertante número de manifestantes neonazis, miembros del KKK y seguidores del MAGA. Aunque su motivación inicial era protestar públicamente en contra de la posible retirada de una estatua dedicada al general confederado Robert E. Lee, los reportes de ese día confirmaron que lo que se buscaba era un objetivo mucho más insidioso y terrorífico, enraizado en la “Alt-Right” (extrema derecha): preservar la “historia” en los espacios públicos para conservar y reforzar la ideología de la Supremacía Blanca. Las verdaderas intenciones quedaron al descubierto en sus cantos racistas, homofóbicos y antisemitas, incluyendo el mantra filosófico de la Alemania nazi, Blut und Boten, o “Sangre y Tierra”. Por la noche, los extremistas de derecha se engalanaron con gorras de béisbol rojas, khakis, polos y antorchas llameantes, mientras que de día optaron por uniformes militares, brazaletes con esvásticas estampadas y armas de fuego cargadas. La apología del odio terminó desencadenando un hecho de violencia que dejó decenas de heridos y la muerte de Heather Heyer, una activista antirracista de 32 años, arrollada por James Alex Fields Jr, un supremacista blanco de 20 años de Ohio. En respuesta a los hechos, tanto políticos republicanos como demócratas emitieron comunicados mostrando su total desprecio contra los manifestantes racistas y alabando la valentía de los que acudieron a protestar por su presencia, gente como Hayer, que literalmente sacrificó su vida para expresar su rechazo al fanatismo, la opresión y la creencia de que el origen racial y étnico determina la “americanidad”. En su página web, la CNN publicó una lista detallada de todos los monumentos confederados del país que serían retirados en las próximas semanas. La polémica en tonor a la remoción de estatuas y memoriales pone sobre la mesa la siguiente cuestión: ¿Qué legados merecen ser conmemorados en bronce a la vista del público, y cuáles sería mejor que permanecieran en los libros de historia? Esa pregunta se la hacen en Filadelfia. El pasado 14 de agosto, la concejal Helen Gym tuiteó: “En todo el país, estamos luchando para retirar los monumentos a la esclavitud y el racismo. En Philly tenemos trabajo pendiente. Retiremos la estatua de Rizzo”. La concejal retomó el asunto al día siguiente, también por Twitter: “No soy la primera en pedir que se retire la estatua de Rizzo, y no seré la última. Gracias, héroes y activistas que lucharon durante décadas contra las políticas de Rizzo, que lideraron la campaña para su retirada en los 70 (...) Y un reconocimiento para quienes retomaron la causa el año pasado. Estamos con ustedes”. Francis Lazarro “Frank” Rizzo no fue un soldado confederado, fue el comisario jefe de la Policía y alcalde demócrata de la ciudad entre finales de los 60 y principios de los 80. Rizzo se destacó por sus mensajes populistas de “hombre duro”, exigiendo “ley y orden” y animando a la policía a no limitarse en el uso de la fuerza a la hora de “limpiar las calles” de Filadelfia. La infame política de Rizzo se caracterizó por registros y cacheos de arriba a abajo a miembros del movimiento Black Panthers, ataques con perros a los estudiantes negros durante manifestaciones pacíficas, redadas llevadas a cabo en locales LGBT, incluso utilizando el eslogan “Vote por un blanco” en sus campañas electorales. Su estatua ha permanecido en suelos municipales, frente a la alcaldía más de veinte años. Manifestantes y activistas como el que fue detenido poco después de desfigurar la estatua, e incluso el alcalde Jim Kenney, han conseguido que el futuro del monumento a Rizzo sea esta semana el centro de las noticias locales, con-
denando el legado del excomisario de policía y exalcalde de la ciudad que tan abiertamente defendió los derechos de los “no-negros” en sus ardientes discursos. Sin embargo, Rizzo tuvo –y sigue teniendo– un puñado de fieles seguidores, entre ellos sus propios familiares y las cerca de diez mil personas que han firmado una petición para conservar intacto el monumento en su honor en la ciudad, según informó CBS Philly el pasado 16 de agosto. Los activistas antirracistas que salieron a protestar en contra de las marchas supremacistas en Charlottesville estaban unidos por su deseo de desmantelar los sistemas que fomentan la opresión y el odio divisivo. A algunos también les une el deseo de derrocar bustos de bronce y vandalizar murales de líderes admirados por la Alt-Right, líderes que han sido convertidos en monumentos sin que merezcan nuestra admiración (al menos si tenemos en cuenta que Estados Unidos es un país construido sobre el pilar de la “libertad y justicia” por encima de todo, o que la Confederación fue traidora y nunca legitimada). Quizás la cuestión no debería centrarse tanto en sí una figura histórica u otra se merece un reconocimiento en forma de monumento físico, o en su significado histórico, sino en lo que simboliza exponer dicha estatua en un espacio público. ¿Qué valores quiere promover Filadelfia cuando los ciudadanos y turistas se paseen por delante de la alcaldía? ¿Qué creencias debería reflejar nuestro arte público? ¿A quién queremos inspirar, y a quién elegimos para que sean ciudadanos modelos de nuestra ciudad? ¿Cómo podemos educar al público retando el pasado y promoviendo las esperanzas en un futuro más digno y progresista? Texas es el segundo estado del país con mayor número de monumentos confederados apuró la retirada de estatuas luego del episodio de violencia racial en Charlottesville, Virgina. Entre estatuas, edificios, escuelas y otros lugares, en Texas hay al menos 178 espacios dedicados a la Confederación, según datos de la Comisión estatal de Veteranos, cifra superior a otros estados que lucharon en el bando del Sur durante la Guerra Civil estadounidense (1861-1865), como Florida (61), Luisiana (91) o Alabama (107). Tres de estos monumentos, dedicados a los generales confederados Robert E. Lee y Albert S. Johnston y al político John Reagan, fueron retirados la madrugada del lunes 21 de agosto de la Universidad de Texas, en Austin. En esta ciudad, varios concejales pre-
sionaron durante los últimos días para cambiar el nombre de la calle Robert E. Lee, un general confederado que defendió la pureza de la raza blanca y la práctica de la esclavitud durante la contienda de mediados del siglo XIX. Precisamente los carteles de esta vía, situada al suroeste de la capital sureña, fueron tachados con pintura permanente por un grupo antifascista a inicios de la semana pasada. El alcalde de Houston, el demócrata Sylvester Turner, anunció que la urbe estudia retirar una estatua confederada de uno de los parques más conocidos después de recibir una petición firmada por cerca de tres mil personas. El mandatario apuntó que es importante tomar una decisión “apropiada” y que no glorifique a aquellos eventos de la historia que “no merecen ser honrados”.

l debate sobre los símbolos confederados se ha extendido por el país desde los hechos del viernes 11 de agosto, donde grupos de extrema derecha se manifestaron en Charlottesville (Virginia) contra la retirada de la estatua del General Robert E. Lee, quien luchó en la guerra civil de Estados Unidos a favor de los estados que apoyaban la esclavitud. Tras la aparición de grupos contramanifestantes como el Black Lives Matter, se desencadenó uno de los episodios más violentos por racismo, desde el ocaso de la lucha por los Derechos Civiles. Tras los eventos violentos sucedidos en Virginia, los representantes por Pensilvania, Dwight Evans, y Nueva York, Adriano Espaillat, presentaron el pasado jueves un proyecto de ley contra el odio, que exige la reducción del financiamiento federal para monumentos relacionados con la esclavitud o a la supremacía blanca. “La bandera de batalla confederada es uno de los símbolos más controversiales en la historia de Estados Unidos, implicando una representación del racismo, la esclavitud, la opresión de los afroamericanos y uno de los períodos más oscuros en el pasado de nuestro país”, dijo Espaillat. “Hemos entrado en un nuevo capítulo de la historia estadounidense tras la violencia y muerte ocurridas en Charlottesville, a manos de supremacistas blancos que portaban antorchas tras la decisión de la ciudad de remover los símbolos de su linaje confederado”. Los días calientes siempre imponen la necesidad de refrescarse. Pero ¿qué sucede cuando esa necesidad se convierte también en una oportunidad para entender la diversidad cultural de Filadelfia?
C
remosos o aguados, dulces y agrios, refrescantes o empalagosos, simples o barrocos… la cuenta es larga. Tanto lo es que hasta podría decirse que hay un tipo de helado para cada tipo de persona. ¡Y en Filadelfia hay un millón quinientas mil! Precisamente por eso, y porque en verano el rey es el más frío de todos los postres, el equipo de redacción de AL DÍA se propuso hacer un relato ‘a seis manos’ sobre este manjar, otrora reservado para la aristocracia, que hoy es el más popular de los placeres y que constituye una forma más de entender y disfrutar el aporte de la inmigración a nuestra ciudad. Cuenta el portal ChillyPhilly.com que fue gracias a una ola de inmigrantes franceses, que llegaron huyendo de la rebelión de esclavos en San Domingo (hoy Haití), a finales del siglo XVIII, que Filadelfia empezó a refrescar la lengua. En 1843 la filadelfiana Nancy Johnson inventó la heladera manual, un cilindro metálico que, por medio de una manivela, giraba hasta convertir la leche en una sustancia fría y cremosa. El invento de Johnson le abrió las puertas a la democratización del dulce congelado. Tal fue el efecto que a mediados del siglo XIX la comunidad afroamericana también disfrutó de las mieles del negocio. Augustus Jackson, considerado el padre del ice cream, fue quizá el primer afroamericano de la ciudad que hizo fortuna mediante el comercio del helado. Pero si a Jackson se le considera el “padre del ice cream” a William A. Breyer –y a su hijo, Henry– se les recuerda como los pioneros del ice cream móvil y al estilo filadelfiano, cuya receta desterró para siempre la yema de huevo y se limitó a la mezcla de crema, azúcar y frutas frescas. Así, en resumidas cuentas, Filadelfia fue dándole forma a una industria reflejo de su propia sociedad: una mezcla perfecta de diversidad de mujeres, europeos y afroamericanos que forjaron las bases de la cultura heladera. Hoy son los heladeros latinos, asiáticos y árabes los llamados a dar el siguiente paso en la evolución de la industria: pequeños y grandes empresarios que a través del diálogo, la tradición y la experimentación han enriquecido el menú: desde una simple bola de ice cream, pasando por una piragua en North Philly a una paleta de jugo natural, el helado filadelfiano es cada vez más rico y diverso; como su gente. n verano podría sobrevivir a base de helado. De chocolate, avellana, café, vainilla, dulce de leche… No me importa pasarme un buen rato haciendo cola frente al mostrador de mi heladería favorita de Barcelona, esperando a que cada miembro de una familia de turistas en sandalias y los hombros quemados por el sol decida de una vez de qué lo quiere. En este aspecto, soy bastante práctica. Soy más fan de los helados cremosos que de los sorbetes afrutados, así que suele caer siempre una bola de chocolate o de turrón, mi favorito. Sin embargo, cuando llega el momento de decidir si lo tomaré en una copa o encima de un cucurucho de galleta crujiente, me entran todas las dudas. Cup or cone? Con esta misma duda titulaba el 31 de julio The New York Times una de las secciones de su newsletter matutino, que cada día recibo en mi correo electrónico. Empiezo a leer y con alegría descubro, entre malas noticias sobre Donald Trump, Rusia y Corea del Norte, que la empresa de helados suaves (softees) más conocida de Estados Unidos, Mister Softee, es originaria de Filadelfia, mi ciudad adoptiva. “¡Viva!”, se me ha escapado en voz alta, pensando que lo próximo que haré al regresar a Filadelfia será zamparme un Softee en Logan Square, uno de mis lugares favoritos. Mister Softee fue creada en 1956 por los hermanos William y Hames Conway en Filadefia. Los dos trabajaban para Sweeden Freezer, un fabricante a gran escala de máquinas de helados, y decidieron ponerse por su cuenta a desarrollar una nueva tecnología que permitía hacer helados más ligeros en el mismo punto de venta. El Día de Saint Patricks, (17 de marzo) de ese mismo año, Bill y Jim salieron por primera vez con su camión a vender helados de color verde por los barrios del Oeste de Filadelfia. Dos años después, en 1958, la compañía había crecido tanto que tuvieron que trasladarse del centro de la ciudad a unas instalaciones más grandes en Runnemede, NJ, donde sigue ubicada actualmente. 60 años después, Mister Softee gestiona una flota de más de 600 camiones franquiciados
de venta de helados en 15 estados del país, y tiene presencia puntual en Reino Unido y China. De Nueva York a Seattle, los camiones de helados de Mister Softee, pintados en azul y blanco, son fáciles de reconocer en todo el país. El artífice de la famosa canción fue Les Waas, un destacado publicista de Filadelfia, fallecido en abril del año pasado, a los 94 años. Hijo de un modista de disfraces para el teatro y una profesora de escuela, Waas creó su propia agencia publicitaria en los años 50, sin tener experiencia previa como lingüista o creativo, según el obituario publicado por The New York Times. De joven, Waas trabajó en una empresa metalúrgica en los astilleros de la Marina en Filadelfia y después se enlistó en las fuerzas áreas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Entre otros lemas publicitarios, Waas creó uno para la cadena hotelera Holiday Inn, los Phillies y otras empresas del sector alimentación de Filadelfia, como Kissling Sauerkraut.
¿QUIÉN FUE EL LISTO?
En EEUU, la disputa sobre quién inventó antes las máquinas para hacer softees sigue abierta. Dairy Queen y Carvel claman dicho honor. Carvel empezó a vender softees en 1934, un poco por accidente, cuando en el Memorial Day de 1934 el camión de helados de su fundador, Tom Carvel, se estropeó, forzándole a vender helado semi-deshecho. Dairy Queen, por otro lado, presume de haber puesto a la venta su propia fórmula de helados suaves en Kankakee, Illinois, un 4 de agosto de 1938. El experimento fue un éxito. Sea cual fuere el primero, los helados de Mister Softee siguen siendo los más populares. ¿La clave del éxito? La campaña publicitaria de los 60, el modelo de negocio de franquicias y quizás también la contribución de Margaret Thatcher a la receta. Según los medios británicos, en 1940, la entonces futura primera ministra británica trabajaba como química en la multinacional de la alimentación J.Lyons and Co, que en ese momento tenía un acuerdo con Mister Softee para distribuir sus nuevas recetas de helado suave en maquinaria americana. Las malas lenguas dicen que la participación de Thatcher, conocida por su política económica conservadora, consistió en añadir más aire a la receta, permitiendo inventar un helado de menos calidad y que diera más beneficios.”

o es ningún secreto que Filadelfia se está transformando en un centro de foodies y trendsetters culinarios, con abundancia de restaurantes que exhiben varios tipos de cocina deliciosa. Una gran diversidad de chefs y restaurantes, cocinas escondidas en la parte trasera de un sencillo foodtruck de comida halal en el campus de la universidad Drexel o en el lujoso restaurante israelí Zahav, han conseguido llenar los diferentes vecindarios de la ciudad de exquisitas opciones para disfrutar de un brunch alcoholizado, una noche especial o un tentempié barato. El postre, quinto plato en una comida estrictamente formal (y el más importante, aunque pueda discutirse) también está teniendo su “momento” en Filadelfia. Especialmente, en los restaurantes étnicos, pensados para satisfacer a los inmigrantes que añoran la comida de su país, o para los paladares aventureros que buscan probar algo verdaderamente “nuevo”. En University City, los estudiantes pueden tomarse un granizado taiwanés en Winterfell Dessert o esperar en la cola para comprar unos adorables kawaii o unos deliciosos macaroons en Sugar Philly (suele estar aparcado en la 38th con Walnut). En Chinatown podrá degustar un bubble tea o el típico rollo helado tailandés en Teassert Bar, un lugar que es casi tan interesante de ver que para comer, y el helado frito tradicional de Malasia en el Banana Leaf o el Penang (elija con qué dulce veneno lo va a rebozar). El Gran Caffe L’Aquila, uno de los últimos italianos en abrir sus puertas en el centro de la ciudad, fue en su día un café emblemático de la Piazza Duomo. Un accidente transformó literalmente en ruinas el antiguo local, pero el destino se encargó de que su futuro diera un dulce giro cuando el campeón del “gelato” Stefano Biasini y el premiado toastador de café Michele Morelli conocieran a Riccardo Longo y, voilà, L’Aquila resurgió de las cenizas en Chestnut Street. Además de su amplia muestra de bocados deliciosos de origen europeo, el restaurante ofrece una experiencia azucarada única en la ciudad:una cena-degustación de gelato. Y aún así, después de todos los cambios demográficos y fascinantes que han ocurrido en la historia de los helados de Filadelfia, una empresa ha resistido la prueba del tiempo: Bassett’s Ice Cream, que ha estado sirviendo bolas del mismo cremoso helado de vainilla, hecho con un 16% de mantequilla, desde su apertura en Reading Terminal Market en 1892. Todo empezó un poco antes, en 1861, con Lewis Dubois Bassett, profesor y granjero Quaker, batiendo helado en el patio trasero de su casa, lo que convierte a Bassetts en una de las heladerías más antiguas de América. Ni siquiera el presidente Obama pudo resistirse a un cucurucho de Bassett’s durante su visita a Filadelfia, en 2010. Más allá de introducir nuevos sabores, como el “Guatemalan Ripple” y el “Pomegranate Blueberry Chunk”, la marca Bassets se ha expandido en China, y desde junio de 2017, en Corea del Sur. Y gracias a este intercambio cultural, Bassetts también ofrece ahora helado de “Matcha” en todas sus tiendas alrededor del mundo.

a esquina de la calle novena con Ellsworth tiene algo especial, dos heladerías mexicanas que, aunque están ubicadas en el corazón del Italian Market, tienen poco que ver en apariencia y sabor con la tradición italiana de la gelatería. Una de ellas sobresale. Los colores chillones de sus paredes y sus puertas abiertas de par en par –en pleno verano– atraen hasta al más desprevenido de los transeúntes. Se trata de La Guerrerense, un local que con solo tres meses de funcionamiento ya está en las bocas de los habitantes de South Philly. Pero ¿cuál es el secreto para que un local de helados logre ser popular en tan poco tiempo? Seguramente no lo es la novedad de la tienda en el barrio. Antes de llegar, La Guerrerense ya era una marca reconocida en varias bodegas

del sector, todo porque desde que abrió su casa matriz, hace diez años en Wilmington (DE), Gabriel Rojas y su familia se han encargado de darle forma a un pequeño imperio heladero presente en 51 locales comerciales y bodegas hispanas de Nueva Jersey, Pensilvania y Delaware. La clave entonces es el sabor y la tradición. Aunque la producción para mantener una presencia de esa magnitud debe ser gigantesca (La Guerrerense ofrece 60 sabores de helado en ice cream y 26 en paletas de pura fruta) su helado sigue siendo –como avisa un cartelito a la entrada– “ciento por ciento casero”. Su elaboración conserva al máximo el espíritu artesanal con el que don Gabriel, el padre de los Rojas, hacía helados en su pueblo natal, Iguala: una garrafa llena de hielo y sal, un motorsito para ayudar a girar las aspas y otra garrafa para mezclar la leche y “el toque secreto”. 10 / AGOSTO 23 - 30, 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com
Es así como la fábrica de La Guerrerense se convierte todos los días, desde la madrugada, en un taller: de ahí salen besos de ángel, uno de sus helados insignia y cuyo sabor no puede describirse de otra manera porque simplemente no hay nada que se le parezca en la tierra. También salen helados de piñón, de rompope, de queso, de gansito, de tequila... Una variedad sin igual que poco a poco ha conquistado el paladar de propios y extraños. “Nosotros tenemos clientes americanos, indios, chinos, puertorriqueños, mexicanos. Todas las razas se comen este helado, porque es un helado hecho con amor”, dice Rojas. Precisamente es el amor por lo que hace, y un talento nato para crear sabores, lo que le han permitido a él y a su familia convertirse en unos de los pocos referentes latinos en la industria heladera de la región.
UN ESPÍRITU CÁLIDO PARA UNA INDUSTRÍA HELADA
Rojas es un inmigrante mexicano proveniente de Iguala, en Guerrero. Cuando cuenta su historia se encarga de dejar claro por qué se define como “un hombre con mucha suerte”. En 1986 cruzó la frontera y pese a que su primera noche en Estados Unidos pudo ser el prólogo de

su vida en el país –tuvo que dormir en la calle porque en el lugar donde se iba a hospedar no tenían espacio para él–, lo cierto es que llegó en el mejor momento para los indocumentados de entonces: la amnistía de Ronald Reagan. Su experiencia es la antítesis de la propuesta republicana para transformar la expedición de tarjetas de residencia en un sistema de “English only”. Sin inglés y sin título universitario, pero con papeles y una voluntad inquebrantable, Rojas trabajó en todo lo que pudo: como bracero, como estampador de camisas, como soldador en una empresa de muebles para baños, como comerciante de joyas... en poco más de 15 años juntó el capital suficiente para independizarse. Sin ser cocinero abrió un restaurante de mariscos. Su hermano Antonio, chef experimentado, se encargó de sacarlo a flote y llevarlo a buen puerto. Dos años después repitió la fórmula: sin ser heladero abrió La Guerrerense, y con maquinaria y talento “made in México”, ahora dirige una empresa que le da trabajo a 12 personas, que produce 35 botes de dos galones y medio de helado y 4.800 paletas diarias. La Guerrerense es casa de uno de los mejores helados latinos de Filadelfia, y su historia la mejor metáfora de la experiencia inmigrante en el país.

an pasado ya casi dos semanas desde que un joven neonazi atropelló con su vehículo a un grupo de activistas anti-racistas que se plantaron en Charlottesville, VA, para manifestarse en contra de una concentración de supremacistas blancos que protestaban por la retirada de la estatua de un General Confederado. El inesperado ataque, que provocó decenas de heridos y la muerte de una activista antirracista de 32 años, Heather Hayer, dejó a la población estupefacta. No solo por el marcado tinte racista del atentado, sino por la falta de contundencia

del presidente Donald Trump a la hora de condenar un incidente que atenta con los principios de igualdad y libertad del país y revela que los grupos neonazis siguen vivitos y coleando. En lugar de condenar con dureza los ataques neonazis, Trump se ha limitado a condenar la violencia mostrada “por ambas partes”, tanto por parte de los grupos de izquierda radical, como los supremacistas blancos, entre los que se engloban seguidores del Nazismo y del KKK. ¿Estamos realmente ante un presidente racista, incapaz de condenar a un grupo de neonazis? A esta pregunta pareció anticiparse el escritor neoyorquino Philip Roth en su novela La Conjura contra América, publicada en 2004. Roth –ganador de un Premio Pulitzer– sitúa el inicio de su novela en 1940, imaginando que el famoso aviador Charles Lindbergh se presenta como candidato republicano a las elecciones presidenciales, prometiendo que EE.UU. no in-

Por mucho que Alemania invada Europa y siga persiguiendo a los judíos, los estadounidenses no tienen porqué morir en una guerra que no les incumbe, sostiene Lindbergh, apoyado por una plataforma que, curiosamente, se llama “América Primero” (America First). Lindbergh, igual que Trump, también un personaje famoso, sin carrera política, que triunfa en las elecciones gracias a sus promesas populistas y controvertidas, como la de pactar con Hitler para no intervenir en la Guerra, y así proteger la economía americana y ahorrarse miles de muertes. Una vez en el poder, su gobierno empieza a adoptar políticas antisemitas, marcadas por el patriotismo americano más casposo. Políticas que aterrorizan a la comunidad judía de EE.UU., como ahora ocurre con los indocumentados latinos. El protagonista de la novela, Philip, es el hijo de una familia de inmigrantes judíos de Newark (NY), inspirada en la del propio autor. “La elección de Lindbergh me había dejado muy claro que el despliegue de lo imprevisto estaba en todas partes. Lo implacablemente imprevisto, que había dado un vuelco erróneo, era lo que en la escuela estudiábamos como “historia”, una historia inocua, donde todo lo inesperado en su época está registrado en la página como inevitable”, escribe Philip Roth. Inesperado e inevitable, como el hecho de que Trump pudiese ganar las elecciones con

su retórica racista contra los inmigrantes, especialmente contra los latinos. Ocho meses después de llegar a la Casa Blanca, no hay indicios de que Trump quiera poner fin a su actitud beligerante y fanática. La semana pasada, la destitución de Steve Bannon, estratega jefe de Donald Trump y controvertido agitador de la extrema derecha, abrió una luz de esperanza. Pero el país todavía espera una condena solemne por su parte contra todos aquellos grupos supremacistas blancos que fomentan el odio y creen que el origen racial y étnico determina la “americanidad”. En la novela de Roth, la obsesión del presidente Lindbergh por esta misma idea de americanidad le lleva a lanzar un programa de adoctrinamiento de niños judíos en los valores americanos. Los niños judíos son enviados a Kentucky para convivir con granjeros y ganaderos tradicionales y contagiarse de los valores patriotas. Sandy, el
hermano pequeño del protagonista, es víctima de este “lavado de cerebro”, para frustración de Philip y sus padres. También su tía sucumbe a las ideas racistas y termina casada con un rabino colaboracionista. El mensaje de Roth está claro: el ser humano es débil y ante la tentación del poder y el dinero es capaz de perder su dignidad y traicionar al resto de su comunidad. “Tampoco había comprendido hasta entonces la manera en que la vanidad desvergonzada de los necios sin remedio puede determinar totalmente el destino de los demás”, escribe. Como ocurre hoy con los indocumentados latinos, en los años 40 los inmigrantes judíos
eran víctimas de discriminación social y vivían bajo el miedo a ser deportados. Y también entonces los políticos manipulaban la información para defender sus intereses. En la novela, Roth alaba la libertad de expresión y la función de la prensa para revelar la verdad. De hecho, el gran rival de Lindbergh es un periodista, Walter Winchell, que en un momento del libro, antes de ser asesinado, dice: “Tengo un mensaje para los señores Lindbergh y Hitler. La situación me obliga a declarar con una franqueza que ellos no pueden malinterpretar que somos nosotros, y no ellos, los dueños del destino de América”.
