Dentro de la multiplicidad de costumbres navideñas en la comunidad latinoamericana, la música siempre ha sido consorte constante de todas las demás. Esta vez repasamos la música popular navideña en Latinoamérica y su presencia en Filadelfia. YAMILY HABIB Y PETER FITZPATRICK AL DÍA News

a música es el verbo del espíritu, que se manifiesta cuando las palabras no son suficientes. Cada momento, en cada cultura, cada celebración con cada necesidad, vienen todos acompañados de la vibración vocal y del ritmo, que acompasan y representan la alegría, el dolor, la esperanza y el
amor. En todas las sociedades de todas las culturas, existen rituales que ameritan la expresión del sentimiento, y las Navidades parecieran ser el 8 / DICIEMBRE 21 - 28, 2016 / ALDÍAnews.com
epítome de ellos. Durante el mes de Diciembre, la celebración del nacimiento del mensajero de los Cristianos es el repertorio más trabajado en la historia de la música, sobretodo desde la incorporación de los textos del Evangelio a las composiciones musicales a partir del siglo XVII. Pero fue la música popular la que alcanzó las esferas sociales más distantes y menos letradas, transformando el mensaje evangelizador en un componente cultural fundamental para la tradición Navideña. Sobretodo en Latinoamérica, donde la fusión cultural ha sido tan profunda y tan enriquecedora. El tambor africano, los instrumentos indígenas y la espiritualidad de la península, son los componentes que han enraizado la música popular Latinoamericana, que se hace presente durante los últimos meses del año.
EN LATINOAMÉRICA
Los Villancicos son el género popular musical Navideño, por antonomasia. Provenientes de las villas, eran la música popular no religiosa que formaba parte de la tradición oral, surgido de manera espontánea, para la narración del nacimiento de Jesús. Junto con la catequesis, la música popular religiosa se difundió por toda Latinoamérica, incor-
porando ritmos caribeños y otros géneros, pero manteniendo la oralidad. Los más populares siempre han sido El Tamborilero, Mi burrito sabanero, Noche de Paz y Feliz Navidad. La transformación del Villancico se hizo local en cada uno de los países latinoamericanos, otorgándole su color particular de acuerdo a la identidad de cada Nación. En Venezuela, por ejemplo, surgió el Aguinaldo. Diferenciándose del regalo propio de la navidad, el género musical nació de la mano con la liturgia y la adoración del nacimiento de Jesús. Es tradición no sólo la representación material del nacimiento en Belén, sino la manifestación musical para “adorar al niño Dios”. El Aguinaldo venezolano cuenta con versos hexasílabos que suelen improvisarse, acompañados del violín, el cuatro, el clarinete, el bandolín, el furruco, los tambores, maracas y guitarra. Existen dos géneros de aguinaldos: la parranda y el religioso, cuya diferencia fundamental suele ser la temática, y suelen variar de acuerdo a la región geográfica de la que provengan (oriental, central, guayanés, andino). La Iglesia Católica, hizo una de las primeras excepciones en la liturgia en Venezuela, permitiendo la música popular y alegre dentro de la celebración de las misas navideñas.
PORTADA Las canciones más conocidas suelen ser Niño Lindo, Cantemos Cantemos, Nació el Redentor, De Contento, Fuego al Cañón, Tun Tun, Un Feliz Año pa’ti, A ti te Cantamos y El Ángel Gabriel. Pero uno de los géneros musicales más potentes en la temporada festiva venezolana siempre han sido las gaitas. Si bien forman parte del repertorio musical nacional (reconocidas como Bien Patrimonial de Interés Cultural y Artístico de Venezuela), la comunidad venezolana alrededor del mundo asocia la gaita con las fiestas navideñas. El origen de este género musical fue la conjugación del villancico de los misioneros católicos, la percusión de los tambores, el sonido del furrureiguire, las maracas y la charrasca, además de una variación de la guitarra ibérica: el cuatro. Si bien existen teorías que sugieren que la gaita nació como un canto de protesta de los esclavos, también existen otras versiones que adjudican sus inicios directamente a la fusión del canto religioso. Es una composición con estructura formal de estrofa-estribillo, de métrica regular e irregular y con rima asonante o consonante, con autoREAD IN nomía en la forma tradiENGLISH cional de interpretación, NEWS.com/OPINION bien sea gaita de furro, de Santa Lucía, de Tambora o de Tamborera. Las agrupaciones más conocidas en el género de la gaita son Gran Coquivacoa, Cardenales del Éxito, la Agrupación Gaitera Rincón Morales, Guaco y Maracaibo 15. Entre las canciones más emblemáticas de la gaita navideña se encuentran: Sin Rencor, La grey Zuliana, Viejo Año, Negrito Fullero, Sentir Zuliano, Gaita buena no envejece y Nostalgia decembrina. De la misma manera, cada país latinoamericano ha adoptado los recursos religiosos de la colonia y les ha transformado en un proceso de hermoso sincretismo, dando origen a su identidad cultural, que si bien comparte algunos elementos con sus hermanos continentales, siguen teniendo características propias. Tal es el caso de la chacarera en Argentina: un ritmo y danza folclórica que se ha extendido desde la provincia de Santiago del Estero hacia el resto del país. Ejecutada tradicionalmente con guitarra, bombo legüero y violín, la chacarera tiene una coreografía y un ritmo particular de acuerdo a la zona geográfica donde se le ejecute, y es tradicional en la época Navideña. Sus intérpretes más conocidos han sido Los Fronterizos, Los de Salta, Los Chalchaleros, y sobretodo la familia Carabajal. En Bolivia, la tradición cuenta con la construcción de instrumentos musicales por parte de los niños durante la fiesta de Navidad, para cantar canciones propias como Niño Manuelito. Ecuador, por su parte, dio origen a una de las canciones más conocidas en Latinoamérica, por su acompañamiento musical y por el protagonismo que tiene durante las paraduras, o celebración de los primeros pasos del niño Jesús.

Esta celebración comienza a principios de diciembre y prosigue durante las Navidades incluso llegando al Día de Reyes, el 6 de enero. El significado de Parranda indica la reunión de un grupo de amigos para sorprender a sus vecinos y es una versión de los villancicos. La mayoría de las personas involucradas en la parranda cantarán y tocarán algún instrumento (bien sea la guitarra, tamboriles, palitos o maracas). La parranda no pretende ser religiosa, sino

más bien es una expresión laica producto de una hibridación. Existen otros aguinaldos tradicionales o canciones de Navidad que también mantienen el espíritu de las festividades. Normalmente los miembros o parranderos llegarán a la locación y se reunirán silenciosamente en la puerta de alguna casa. Las parrandas normalmente comienzan después de las 10 de la noche para poder sorprender al vecino. Una vez que la persona observa al grupo, les invita a la casa donde hay refrigerios, música y bailes. Tras un par de horas el grupo, incluyendo al dueño de la casa, saldrán a buscar a más personas. A veces la parranda puede durar toda una noche y no terminar sino hasta horas de la mañana. Por otra parte, las posadas se cree que provienen de los frailes agustinianos de Acolman, cerca de la Ciudad de México. En 1586, el Fraile Diego de Soria recibió una bula papal por parte de Sixto V para celebrar las misas de Aguinaldo entre los días 16 y 24 de diciembre. Los Aztecas tenían la tradición de honrar a su Dios Huitzilopochtil durante el solsticio de invierno. Se celebraban comidas especiales donde los invitados recibían pequeñas figuras del ídolo hechas con una pasta de maíz tostado en el suelo y sirope de agave. Los frailes terminaron combinando ambas celebraciones. La palabra posada implica “refugio” y es la representación tradicional de la travesía de María y José en búsqueda de un lugar dónde quedarse en Belén. La celebración comienza con una procesión donde los participantes sostienen velas y cantan villancicos, mientras otras personas interpretan los papeles de María y José. PORTADA Posada, que consiste en dos partes: una interpretada por las personas en la calle, que reza las palabras de José pidiendo refugio, mientras una contraparte es cantada desde adentro de las casas diciendo que no hay vacantes. Tras un breve intercambio entre ambas partes, el posadero decide finalmente dejarles entrar. El anfitrión abrirá la puerta y todos podrán entrar. Las fiestas dentro de casa comienzan con una lectura de la Biblia y una oración, para dar paso a los tamales y una bebida caliente como el ponche o atole. Los invitados partirán piñatas y los niños tendrán dulces. Las nueve noches de las posadas representan los nueve meses que llevó María a Jesús en el vientre. La Novena en América del sur es una celebración religiosa mezclada con las parrandas. Por ejemplo, en Colombia, la Navidad comienza el 7 de diciembre con la celebración de la Inmaculada Concepción, día conocido como El día de las Velitas. A partir del 16 de Diciembre, las personas se reúnen cada noche a rezar La Novena de Aguinaldos, para recordar el nacimiento de Jesús.

A partir del 16 de Diciembre, las personas se reúnen cada noche a rezar La Novena de Aguinaldos, para recordar el nacimiento de Jesús. Esta tradición se remonta a finales del siglo XVIII cuando Fray Fernando de Jesús Larrea, seminarista de Quito, Ecuador, escribió una oración nocturna. Posteriormente fue modificada por la Hermana María Ignacia, incorporándole un poema de aspiraciones llamado Los Gozos. Cada noche de la novena va acompañada por villancicos y comidas tradicionales. La parte fundamental de las Novenas es el sistema llamado-respuesta en los Gozos, donde cada verso es respondido con el canto del Villancico de origen ecuatoriano, Dulce Jesús Mío, acompañado por panderetas que llevan los niños. La celebración de la Navidad es muy importante para los niños latinoamericanos, quienes suelen escribir una carta al niño Jesús y ponerla en el nacimiento. La carta desaparece, lo que significa que el niño Jesús la tomó y sabe qué regalos colocar cerca de sus camas en la víspera de Noche Buena. Es durante esta víspera cuando todos disfrutan de la cena de Navidad, donde se degustan tamales, natilla y buñuelos, seguidos del brindis familiar, siempre con un vaso de aguardiente o sabajón. En definitiva, la Navidad es una de las épocas más celebradas en la tradición latinoamericana. medida que se acercan las Navidades, a los venezolanos les gusta escuchar gaitas en sus casas, y escuchar gaitas significa escuchar a Guaco, una conocida banda musical venezolana nacida en los años 60 que dio sus primeros pasos hacia la fama interpretando estas típicas canciones navideñas, que se tocan con furrucos, charrascas y tamboras. Con el tiempo, la banda fue creando su peculiar estilo -una mezcla de ritmos tropicales, salsa, pop, funk y ritmos urbanos, que el mes pasado la hicieron merecedora de un Grammy Latino al Mejor Álbum Tropical Contemporáneo.

“Guaco es toda una institución en Venezuela”, explica David Escalante, un creativo venezolano residente en Barcelona, donde el grupo tocó el pasado 9 de diciembre. A las pocas semanas de recibir el Grammy, Guaco inició una pequeña gira por España y Estados UnidosHouston, Orlando y Miami - para la alegría de la comunidad venezolana expatriada. Y muy especialmente, para los miles de inmigrantes que se han visto obligados a huir del país en los últimos años a causa de la complicada situación política y económica, con la incerteza de no saber cuándo van a poder volver. Se trata de una emigración masiva: se calcula que cerca de dos millones de personas han abandonado el país, la mayoría jóvenes con estudios, como David, que tiene menos de 30 años. Jóvenes o viejos, todos saben quién es Gustavo Aguado, el único integrante original del
grupo, fundado en la ciudad de Maracaibo en los años 60. Le preguntan cómo es posible que una banda tradicional haya podido durar tantos años, sin haber pasado de moda. “Pues la verdad es que nadie lo entiende, ojalá se perpetúe en el tiempo”, responde Aguado, sonriendo. Viene acompañado de tres músicos jóvenes, con quien ha grabado Guaco Histórico 2, el álbum merecedor del Grammy Latino, y los cuatro desprenden entusiasmo y buen humor. “Estamos contentos de poder tocar en Barcelona, nos sentimos muy bien acompañados acá, entre tantos venezolanos. La verdad es que no hay demasiadas diferencias entre dar un concierto en Venezuela, en España o en EEUU: el público venezolano se comporta igual dondequiera que esté: es impulsivo, reverente, tiene sentimiento: así somos los venezolanos ”, dice Aguado. “Como Sera”, “Lo Eres Todo”, “Eres Mas”, “Pideme”, “Si fuera tu bailo conmigo”, “Las Caraquenas” …sus grandes éxitos siguen llenando las salas de conciertos tanto en el extranjero como en su país. “ Y eso tiene mérito, porque tal y como está la situación en el país– inmerso en espiral de crisis, inflación y violencia – el venezolano sigue sonriendo, sigue bailando”, dice el cantante veterano. “Por eso exactamente estamos hoy aquí: por nuestra lucha, por nuestra batalla por establecer un patrimonio venezolano, que ya dura más de 50 años”, concluye. En sus últimos álbumes, Guaco experimenta con ritmos hispanos, música urbana, Pop fla-
CULTURA menco. Poco queda de las gaitas zulianas que tocaban en los 60. “Nunca imaginé que iríamos a poder vivir de esto”, admite Aguado. El pasado octubre, la Súper Banda de Venezuela estuvo casi un mes de gira por Japón, invitados por un fan de su música, un “guaquero” nipón, que costeó los gastos del viaje. “En Japón cantaban nuestras canciones sin saber ni papa de español”, bromea el cantante. De cara al año que viene, el grupo planea lanzamiento de un nuevo álbum y el estreno de la película Guaco: Semblanza, un documental que recogerá los cincuenta años de carrera artística de la agrupación, que está en la última fase de rodaje. “El año pasado vinieron a Barcelona en junio. Fue raro escucharles en verano, ya que los venezolanos asociamos Guaco a las gaitas, y las gaitas, a la Navidad”, explica David, que espera sentado a poder hacerse una foto junto a su ídolo. Esta vez, el concierto en Barcelona no podía

caer en una fecha mejor: tres semanas antes de Navidad. “Para los venezolanos en la diáspora, somos una especie de denominador común, somos un paliativo”, explica Gustavo. “¿Y la música sirve para eso, no? Para calmar los sentimientos”, dice el cantante, a quién no le gusta hablar de política. “Mi única política es dar alegría a la gente”, dice. La política de verdad, se la deja a los políticos, por los que siente poco respeto, tanto por los venezolanos como los del resto del mundo. “La palabra política en sí es una alteración de la verdad, y eso es un hábito a nivel mundial. Sino, cómo se entiende que la política pueda llevar a un batracio como Trump a la presidencia de los EEUU?”, exclama, sonrojado. Reconoce que en su país, la situación es crítica, “estamos a punto de ebullición”, pero evita criticar abiertamente al régimen de Nicolas Maduro, como han hecho otros cantantes venezolanos. Es el caso del dúo Chino y Nacho, que han arre-

Archivo particular metido públicamente contra Maduro en varios conciertos y exigen su renuncia inmediata. “Lo que debemos hacer es ir a votar, ir a votar siempre”, se limita a decir Gustavo. Gracias a la experimentación con el Pop y la música urbana, Guaco sigue siendo un fenómeno que no pasa de moda. “La música pasa por un proceso de masificación, hay que adaptarse a ese proceso”, dice el músico, orgulloso de que Guaco esté de moda entre los adolescentes venezolanos y se escuche de nuevo en las escuelas. En el próximo año quieren expandirse por Latinoamérica, especialmente en México, un mercado que consideran fundamental. Pero por ahora se conformaran con tres bolos en Estados Unidos y un gran concierto de fin de año en Venezuela. A David y a su amiga, Cristina Bolívar, les gustaría pasar las Navidades y el fin de año junt a sus familias, en Caracas, pero tendrán que conformarse con el pequeño concierto de Guaco en Barcelona para telentrasportarse a su país. “Me vine a Barcelona sola, a la aventura”, explica Cristina, de 28 años, que llegó a España hace menos de un año con un visado de asilo político. En Caracas, Cristina trabajaba de reportera de política para el periódico 6to Poder, hasta que el gobierno de Maduro ordenó su cierre y confiscación de los bienes. “El director está ahora en los tribunales”, explica Cristina. “Como comprenderás, no es lo más fácil ser periodista política en Venezuela en estos momentos”, añade la joven venezolana. Cristina no tiene familia en Barcelona, pero tenía muy claro que tenía que marcharse de Caracas, costase lo que costase. “Con la inflación que tenemos y la divisa por el suelo nos cuesta muy caro. Pero la situación allí está terrible”, admite. n

a presidenta de la Comisión de Parques y Recreación de Filadelfia, Kathryn Ott Lovell, presidió ayer junto al Concejal Bobby Henon y varios miembros de la comunidad, la ceremonia inaugural del American Legion Playground, en el noreste de Filadelfia,en motivo de la finalización de las obras de renovación recientes. La modernización del parque es fruto de las continuadas quejas por parte de los habitantes de la ciudad, no solo del noreste, que lamentan la falta de espacio para que los niños puedan jugar y aprender. “Aplaudo la dedicación del Concejal Henon a la mejora de los parques e instalaciones recreativas, y por supuesto a la comunidad de aquí, del noreste de Filadelfia”, dijo la Comisionada Ott Lovell. “Las mejoras en el American Legion serán disfrutadas por personas de todas las edades y aptitudes. Estoy deseando inaugurar más parques como este por la ciudad muy pronto “, añadió la Comisionada.
Tras la instalación de equipamiento nuevo y recubrir el pavimento con una superficie más segura, los miembros de la comunidad pueden finalmente ver su parque como un lugar que toda la familia puede disfrutar. El parque no está limitado a los niños, también se ha creado una área de fitness para adultos. Por otro lado, la zona de juego principal se dividió en dos zonas, una para los niños pequeños y otra para los más mayores. Con un coste de 280.000 dólares, el proyecto de renovación del parque comenzó en 2014 con la esperanza de renovar los espacios verdes y de juego en toda la ciudad. Las familias habían dejado de venir al parque debido al mal estado de las estructuras, viejas y aparentemente inseguras. “Ahora que lo hemos renovado, estoy deseando ver este patio de recreo y esta cancha de baloncesto mucho más utilizados. Quiero agradecer al departamento de Parques y Recreación, Proyectos de Capital y Propiedad Pública por su increíble trabajo en la Legión Americana “, dijo el concejal Henon.n

n grupo de científicos de una universidad californiana está probando en pacientes con lesiones de columna un método de estimulación eléctrica para ayudar a la médula espinal a encontrar “vías alternativas”, como hacen los conductores “cuando hay un atasco en una autopista”. “La médula espinal contiene vías alternativas que pueden ser utilizadas para evadir la lesión y enviar mensajes del cerebro a los miembros”, explicó el neurocirujano Daniel Lu, de la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (UCLA). Brian Gómez, de 28 años y tetrapléjico desde hace cinco años, cuando se rompió el cuello en un accidente de moto, está siendo tratado de manera experimental con el método desarrollado por investigadores del Centro Médico Ronald Reagan de UCLA. La estimulación eléctrica “entrena a la médula espinal para encontrar y utilizar estas vías (alternas)”, anotó Lu, quien además es profesor de neurocirugía de la Escuela de Medicina David Geffen de UCLA y director del La-

Las lesiones en esa área -detalló Lu- son muy delicadas, pues generalmente producen la pérdida de movimiento en las cuatro extremidades. Adicionalmente al estimulador también se implantó bajo la piel del paciente, en la parte baja de la espalda, un “paquete” con una batería y su unidad de proceso, lo “suficientemente pequeño para que quepa en la palma de la mano”.

El trabajo con Gómez hasta el momento ha dado resultados positivos en la recuperación parcial del movimiento de una mano. Experimentos anteriores con estimulación eléctrica habían permitido que pacientes con lesiones en las extremidades inferiores “pudieran estar de
pie y mover sus piernas por ellos mismos luego de una lesión en la parte baja de la columna”, señaló el neurocientífico Reggie Edgerton, profesor emérito del Colegio de Ciencias de la Vida de UCLA. Sin embargo, “(en el campo científico) había un considerable escepticismo de que pudiéramos utilizar una aproximación similar para recuperar funciones de las manos en pacientes cuadrapléjicos con lesiones en la parte superior de la columna”, anotó Edgerton, quien trabaja conjuntamente con Lu. Los avances logrados por el hispano en su tratamiento son muy alentadores. “Esto significa una diferencia enorme para mí”, declaró Gómez, dueño de una tostadora de café en San Dimas, California.■
