n un esfuerzo por reconocer y apoyar la diversidad en el área del derecho, el Procurador de la Ciudad Sozi Tulante contribuyó al evento en que AL DÍA resaltó las contribuciones de siete abogados Latinos de importantes firmas en Filadelfia. Con una sala llena en el Club Pyramid, siete firmas fueron representadas en la ceremonia de Premiación: Foxs Rothschild, Stradley Ronon y Dilworth Paxson, por mencionar algunas. El evento recibió a los directores de estas firmas y les ayudó a reconocer a sus principales empleados Latinos. Aunque la abogacía es una de las profesiones menos diversas en el país (con un 88% de abogados blancos), el Procurador Tulante destacó la importancia de resaltar los logros de las minorías en el campo y alentó a la audiencia a fomentar el crecimiento de nuevas generaciones de abogados. “Con frecuencia, si eres un Latino en una profesión legal, te encuentras nadando contra la corriente, y necesitamos hacer lo posible para apoyar y recompensar a nuestros abogados Latinos por su excelencia. CASA “BLANCA” Con opiniones vacilantes en una gran variedad de temas, los nominados al gabinete de Trump podrían ser la imagen más clara de la presidencia por venir. Altamente acaudalados, blancos y hombres, con ningún Latino a la vista, la Casa Blanca seguramente hará honor a su nombre.

E

l 20 de Enero, el presidente electo Donald Trump asumirá su puesto en la Casa Blanca. Junto a él vendrán los integrantes de su gabinete, muchos de los cuales son algunos de los hombres más ricos en los Estados Unidos. Las posiciones más altas serán las más observadas, considerando que será su labor el dirigir los departamentos y las agencias gubernamentales que determinarán muchos sectores de la vida Americana. Con un gabinete que es bastante homogéneo en términos de raza y género (de hecho, sólo 3 de los 13 son mujeres y tan sólo 3 pertenecen a una raza distinta a la blanca), existe otro asunto que es recurrente: el trasfondo financiero de muchos de los nominados. Desde el Director Ejecutivo de Exxon hasta uno de los miembros de la junta de Wells Fargo, los asesores más cercanos a Trump representan intereses privados de una manera que no se había visto en gabinetes anteriores. No sólo los miembros están relacionados íntimamente con algunas de las empresas más grandes de América, sino que también creen en la privatización de muchos servicios de los cuales depende diariamente el Americano promedio, siendo su primer paso la derogación de la Ley de Cuidado de la Salud Asequible. Además de ser acaudalados, los nominados a estos cargos podrían dirigir oficinas que se oponen directamente a lo que ellos apoyan. Un ejemplo de ello es Ben Carson, el nominado a Secretario de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano. El Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano está a cargo de administrar la vivienda pública y el financiamiento a nivel federal, y determina cómo será distribuido en los diversos estados y ciudades del país. Carson ha dicho abiertamente que no considera que el pueblo deba estar “vegetando” en la vivienda pública y considera que los Americanos que dependen de asistencia pública deberían tener una cuota limitada de acceso para que puedan

trabajar por sí mismos y salir adelante en sus situaciones económicas. Con Carson en la cabecera de este departamento, eso podría significar un decrecimiento en las 1.1 millones de unidades de vivienda que se otorgan actualmente a 2.2 millones de americanos con ingresos mínimos en los Estados Unidos, de acuerdo al Centro de Políticas de Presupuesto y Prioridades. Pero Carson es tan sólo un ejemplo de lo que podría ser un corte drástico en la asistencia federal a servicio públicos. Asimismo la nominada para Secretaria de Educación es Betsy DeVos, quien tiene una larga trayectoria como activista de la escogencia escolar, habiendo trabajado fuertemente para apoyar el desarrollo de educaciones pagas y privadas y la implementación de escuelas privadas y subvencionadas en lugar de la educación pública y gratuita. Bajo su supervisión, Trump logrará su meta de redirigir la responsabilidad financiera de la educación pública al estado y a niveles locales, muchos de los cuales no pueden darse ese lujo. Otro ejemplo es el fiscal general de Oklahoma, Scott Pruitt, quien tiene lazos muy cercanos con la industria de combustibles fósiles, particularmente por su representación de Oklahoma en una demanda contra la E.P.A. bajo la administración Obama. Con él como nominado, las regulaciones actuales que la E.P.A. tiene instauradas serán drásticamente derogadas y las cuotas que recibe la energía renovable podrían ser gravemente reducidas, si no erradicadas. Los nominados de Trump se alinean perfectamente con muchas de las declaraciones que él mismo hizo durante su campaña, y anuncian una privatización de los servicios públicos. Esta reducción del apoyo federal es una pequeña muestra de lo que los nominados de Trump parecieran augurar: la creación de un interés corporativo frontal y centralizado por el gobierno federal. Y, mientras los directores ejecutivos ocupen posiciones gubernamentales, podemos asumir que el interés corporativo prosperará.

Vice Presidente MIKE PENCE Republicano

Con un voto en el senado en el caso de un punto muerto y en la posición de primer asesor del Presidente, el VicePresidente es clave tanto en el poder ejecutivo como en el legislativo. Con Mike Pence como Vice-Presidente electo, esta posición será ocupada por el antiguo gobernador de Indiana, que firmó para que entrase en Vigo la ley de libertad de credo, a través de la cual sería legal que algunos dueños de empresas negaran prestar servicio a clientes LGBTQ. Mike Pence también ha sido defensor de los campos de conversión de homosexuales, su postura es en contra del aborto y ha abogado por el movimiento Tea Party, por lo tanto, al cumplir su rol de Vice-Presidente electo puede preverse que continuará siendo “un Cristiano, conservador y Republicano, en ese orden”.

GABINETE DE NUEVA CASA “BLANCA”

Secretario del Tesoro STEVEN MNUCHIN Republicano

Productor Hollywoodense y antiguo empleado de Goldman Sachs, Steven Munchin ha sido nombrado como el candidato de Donald Trump para Secretario del Tesoro. Habiendo trabajado en la campaña de Trump durante el mes de Mayo, Mnuchin no es ajeno a las campañas políticas, especialmente en asuntos de contribución. Ha apoyado financieramente a Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama y a Charles Schumer, tanto en campañas políticas como en otros asuntos. El mayor inconveniente para la carrera de Steven Mnuchin es los 1.55 mil millones de dólares que obtuvo gracias a la crisis financiera del 2008 con su banco, así como sus asociaciones con los contribuyentes que incluso Trump ha ridiculizado en el pasado.

Secretario de Transporte ELAINE L. CHAO Republicano

Habiendo servido en la Casa Blanca como subsecretaria de transporte bajo la jefatura del Presidente George Bush, Elaine Chao tiene una extensa carrera en Capitol Hill. Trabajó como directora de los Cuerpos de Paz en la administración del Presidente George Bush y ha trabajado en diferentes áreas del gobierno durante su carrera. Como secretaria de trabajo en el período de George W. Bush, fue la única oficial en su administración que trabajo durante ocho años. Chao actualmente posee asociaciones que algunos cuestionan, concretamente sus posiciones en las juntas de Wells Fargo y Fox News. Aunque muchos en el gabinete de Trump están en la junta de Fox News o trabajan como comentadores, con los recientes escándalos de Wells Fargo, algunos intuyen que Chao podría enfrentar conflictos de interés.

Secretario de Salud TOM PRICE Republicano

Actualmente se desempeña como presidente de la Comisión de Presupuesto de la Cámara, es uno de los críticos más fuertes al Obamacare y ha planteado que tiene un plan integral para sustituirle. Sus ideas van desde la reforma de Medicare hasta permitir a los beneficiarios el uso de sus beneficios para adquirir seguridad privada, o la transformación de Medicaid en una subvención en bloque, en la cual los estados recibirían fondos en un pago único. Su nominación aumenta la preocupación entre los grupos de defensa a los derechos de la mujer, quienes están al tanto del historial de Price en el que ha desprovisto de fondos a programas como Paternidad Programada y ha recortado el acceso a anticonceptivos. Secretario de Defensa JAMES N. MATTIS Republicano

A pesar de que el General Mattis se expuso al escarnio público por sus declaraciones en el 2005 en las que afirmaba que “es divertido dispararle a algunas personas” frente a un grupo en San Diego, su claridad política y militar se ha decorado con elogios. Destacado como figura fundamental en la guerra de Irak y como comandante de combate experimentado, el General James Mattis cuenta con más de 44 años de servicio en el Cuerpo de Marines. Y tras ascender a un cargo para vigilar el Comando Central de los Estados Unidos, el General Mattis necesitaría aplicar para una dispensa del Congreso, para ser elegible a la posición debido a su reciente servicio.

Secretario de Estado REX W. TILLERSON Republicano

El Director Ejecutivo de Exxon, Rex Tillerson ha sido seleccionado como Secretario de Estado. Como director de la compañía de petróleos más valiosa del planeta, muchos consideran que las asociaciones de Tiller son un claro conflicto de intereses que podría impactar el sector ambiental, así como también las operaciones de seguridad de los Estados Unidos. Exxon se ha asociado con Rosneft, una compañía de petróleos rusa, para acceder a las reservas en el Ártico. El Presidente de Rusia, Vladimir V. Putin en persona asistió al acuerdo de Exxon, revelando que la asociación de Tillerson se ajusta en gran medida con el apoyo de Trump mismo a Putin.

Secretario del Interior RYAN ZINKE Republicano

Habiendo sido un SEAL de la Marina, Ryan Zinke ha sido nominado por Trump para ser Secretario del Interior. A la edad de 55 años, el ávido defensor de Trump estaba dirigido a competir contra el Senador de Minnesota Jon Tester en el 2018 y su designación podría evitar un oponente viable para el senador durante ese año. Zinke trabajó en los Comités de Servicios Armados y de Recursos naturales, donde fue receptor de fuertes represalias por parte de grupos ambientalistas y conservacionistas, por sus votos y prácticas. “Ambos somos optimistas sobre el futuro”, dijo Zinke sobre su posible posición con Trump.

e gustaría que ese artículo pudiera arrugarse en forma de bola por si mismo y dispararse contra las cabecitas de todos aquellos que votaron a Donald Trump en las pasadas elecciones. Quizás un pequeño golpe en la sien les haría reaccionar. ¿Pero en qué pensaban? No sé dan cuenta de lo que han hecho? Han conseguido que en menos de dos días tome el poder de la Casa Blanca un multimillonario y empresario de casinos frustrado que ha manifestado abiertamente sus ideas nacionalistas, xenófobas, machistas; que se codea con Putin, menosprecia a la prensa y cree que el cambio climático es un cuento chino. Y por si fuera poco, ha invitado a sus amigos ricachones y afines a sus ideas a gobernar junto a él. Bienvenidos a la nueva Administración Trump. Empecemos por Rex Tillerson, jefe del gigante petrolero Exxon Mobil y amigo de Putin, elegido por Trump para ser el Secretario de Estado. No tiene experiencia política, pero gracias a su cargo directivo en Exxon tiene contactos en todo el mundo. Contactos como el presidente ruso, que en 2013 le concedió la Orden de la Amistad de su país. La cercanía de Tillerson con Putin ha puesto los pelos de punta a los miembros del Senado, especialmente durante las últimas semanas, en que los servicios de inteligencia de Estados Unidos han confirmado que Moscú está detrás de los ciberataques a la campaña electoral americana que pudieron ayudar a la victoria de Trump. Quizás tengamos suerte y Tillerson se calme. Durante su segunda audiencia de confirmación de cargo ante el Senado, el futuro jefe de la diplomacia americana reconoció que la actitud de Moscú es “peligrosa” pero que hay que continuar con el diálogo. Tillerson también ha querido distanciarse de la posición negacionista de Trump ante el cambio climático, admitiendo que el calentamiento global pone ciertos riesgos. Su vinculación con una de las mayores petroleras del mundo no indican que tenga mucho interés en reducir las emisiones de carbono del planeta. Y si no cuidamos del medioambiente y el planeta se muere, poco importa si se construyen muros

anti-inmigrantes o se toman medidas antiglobalización. El cambio climático es un multiplicador de pobreza y éxodos migratorios. En esta línea, el otro nombramiento de Trump que más me molesta es el de Scott Pruitt como responsable de la Agencia de Protección Medioambiental (EPA). La comunidad científica no sale de su asombro por la elección para el cargo de este abogado que hasta ahora era fiscal general de Oklahoma y que se toma el cambio climático como una broma. Desde 2011 ha presentado más de una decena de demandas contra la EPA; por ejemplo, apoyando a la industria del fuel en contra del Plan de Energía Limpia de la Administración Obama. Entre los demócratas y los activistas se cuestiona la sintonía de Pruitt

Una nueva Administración que es enemiga del planeta, de la globalización, la Ciencia y la diversidad cultural – en el gabinete Trump no hay ningún Latino prominente. con la industria petrolera y del gas. Negar el cambio climático es negar la ciencia. Y esta filosofía también la comparte la nueva secretaria de Educación, la también multimillonaria Betsy deVos. Activa defensora del sistema de escuelas concertadas, DeVos es además una fundamentalista Cristiana con un largo historial de oposición a la Ciencia, informó en diciembre The New Yorker. En Chicago, la familia DeVos ha donado dinero a una fundación Pro-Vida, lo que hace pensar que con ella a la cabeza de la educación pública podría poner en peligro la enseñanza de temas clave como el aborto, la teoría de la evolución o los avances en biotecnología. En resumen, una nueva Administración que es enemiga del planeta, de la globalización, la Ciencia y la diversidad cultural – en el gabinete Trump no hay ningún Latino prominente. Apaga y vámonos. n

Habiendo sido un ávido partidario de Trump desde el principio, Wilbur Ross es otro multimillonario en la lista de nominados al gabinete de Donald Trump. Sus miles de millones se hicieron a través de la habilidad de su compañía en transformar compañías desde la raíz, habiendo recientemente vendido la Compañía fallida Bethlehem Steel y la transformó en el International Steel Group que posteriormente vendió en 4.5 mil millones de dólares. Sin embargo, ha habido algunas dudas sobre su valor neto de 3 mil millones de dólares, o preocupaciones sobre su acumulación de deuda personal que podría transferirse bajo su asesoría dentro de la oficina, especialmente con la renegociación de NAFTA.

esulta triste admitir que los latinoamericanos estamos acostumbrados a las escenas políticas más incongruentes del mundo. Viniendo de Venezuela, la incompetencia al mando no parece ajena a la consciencia colectiva. Nicolás Maduro, Evo Morales e incluso Chávez, nos han preparado para soportar las circunstancias más inverosímiles y descabelladas, producto de gobiernos populistas cuyos mandatos han desvanecido cualquier conato de democracia en décadas. Pero el triunfo de Donald J. Trump como Presidente de la nación más poderosa del mundo parece retar cualquier preparación psicológica. No sólo por su incompetencia al mando, que él mismo se encarga día a día (twitt a twitt) de corroborar, sino por el respeto incondicional que muestran los ciudadanos y las instancias gubernamentales norteamericanas a los procesos democráticos. Pareciera contradictorio, pero amparar la subida al poder de una personalidad que minimiza a cualquier predecesor (Bush y Nixon incluidos), por respeto a la constitución, es algo digno de admirar. Ahora bien, lograr digerir que el anfitrión de El Aprendiz sea ahora el

dueño de la llave maestra del mundo no era suficiente, cuando tocó leer minuciosamente a las personas que había escogido para conformar su séquito: James Mattis, quien disfruta de dispararle a las personas; Wilbur Ross, y su despotismo profesional; Andrew Puzder y sus perspectivas sobre el salario mínimo; Rex Tillerson y su absoluta ignorancia más allá del taladro; Stephen K. Bannon y su soberbia mayoritaria y Ben Carson con su mano dura, son solo algunos de los colegas multimillonarios de Trump que ahora formarán el Gabinete que lo asesorará. ¿Alguien más se siente en el comedor de Lord Voldemort o soy sólo yo? Mofas aparte, esta es una circunstancia delicada, no sólo para el pueblo estadounidense sino para el mundo entero. Nada más peligroso que una potencia en manos de incompetentes con conflictos de intereses. Es alarmante cómo entre memes, chistes y huelgas artísticas, el mundo está dejando que un individuo abiertamente racista, clasista, misógino e incapaz de argumentar sus posiciones, haya escogido a un equipo a su medida, y que ahora todos tomen el timón del núcleo magnético de la política mundial, para llevar el barco a un puerto seguro en algún lugar de Rusia. n

Secretario de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano BEN CARSON Republicano

Fue director del departamento de Neurocirugía Pediátrica en el Hospital John Hopkins y el Jefe más joven de ese departamento en el país, a la edad de 33 años. Su publicitado discurso hacia el Presidente Obama en el Desayuno Nacional en Oración en el 2008 le propició la fama por sus perspectivas sobre asuntos sociales y políticos. También fue homenajeado con la Medalla Presidencial por la Libertad durante el mismo año. E

l día después de que se anunciara que Donald Trump era el presidente electo de los Estados Unidos, cientos de personas tomaron las calles de Filadelfia para protestar. Con pancartas que rezaban desde “Revisemos la 13ava Enmienda” hasta “No es mi Presidente”, la multitud estaba a rebosar de energía y determinada a rechazar una presidencia en manos de Trump, de cualquier manera. La multitud de manifestantes era muy diversa, entre estudiantes universitarios, votantes primerizos y organizaciones políticas de la ciudad. Y a pesar de sus diferencias de edad, trasfondos y etnias, todos los protestantes tenían algo en común: una clara consciencia de que muchos de los derechos que dan por hechos se verían modificados durante una presidencia en manos de Trump. Desde el primer votante que entrevisté – quien se encontraba intentando poner al día sus visitas médicas antes de la derogación del Obamacare, hasta una pareja que se cuestionaba si su matrimonio seguiría vigente ante la Corte Suprema y la ley del matrimonio igualitario, estas eran personas que no estaban dispuestas a ceder sus libertades civiles que habían ganado durante la administración Obama, y se encontraban incluso más temerosos de la pérdida de otros derechos. Si observamos la reforma del programa de préstamo estudiantil de billones de dólares a través de las becas Pell, los planes de amortización de préstamos basados en la situación socioeconómica de los estudiantes, la reducción de la sentencia por disparidades entre el crack y la cocaína en polvo, e incluso la implementación de un plan federal para priorizar los delincuentes antes que sus familias inmigrantes, Obama ha intentado promulgar planes incluso en los escenarios más difíciles a los que se enfrenta cada miembro de los Estados Unidos de América. Es cierto que hay muy pocos que no se han beneficiado de lo que la administración Obama ha calificado de “Esperanza”. Para muchos, es la esperanza de cambio lo que eligió al primer presidente negro de los Estados Unidos y fueron los derechos ganados en el camino lo que hizo que fuera reelecto para una segunda vuelta. No son las incontables mujeres que perderán su derecho a escoger mientras Mike Pence sea Vice-Presidente. No serán los millones de inmigrantes que, de hecho, son quienes hacen grande a este país, mientras Trump intenta endurecer las políticas de inmigración. No, proteger los derechos del americano promedio no es una prioridad en la lista de Trump. Con un gabinete de multimillonarios y Directores Ejecutivos, una presidencia de

Si bien la administración Trump ha hablado abiertamente sobre su compromiso con la clase trabajadora y pobre, la nominación de Andrew Puzder a esta posición en el gabinete podría significar un golpe a los trabajos, al salario mínimo y a otras políticas económicas. El doble criterio con que los periodistas cubren las noticias

oda profesión tiene su punto ciego. Los médicos son a veces los peores pacientes. Los maestros pueden ser los peores estudiantes. Los abogados pueden ser los peores clientes. Y a muchos periodistas--que, se supone, deben pedir cuentas a ciertos individuos--no les gusta rendir cuentas ante los demás. Por suerte, si mis compañeros profesionales no comprenden en algún momento lo que están haciendo mal, Donald Trump se los indicará con mucho gusto. El presidente electo envía tweets a menudo sobre los que él denomina “medios deshonestos”. En un ejemplo reciente, después de que Meryl Streep criticara a Trump en los Golden Globes por presuntamente READ IN burlarse de un reportero discapacitado durante la campaENGLISH ña, el multimillonario envió un tweet diciendo que nunca NEWS.com/OPINION hizo eso y echó la culpa del malentendido a los “medios muy deshonestos”. Estoy seguro de que los periodistas están cansados de que Trump los tome de punto. Pero la verdad es que el Cuarto Estado merece una sacudida. En primer lugar, con toda esta repentina preocupación por las “noticias falsas”, sin duda hay un claro doble criterio en la manera en que se cubren las noticias. Los medios están actualmente muy preocupados por el nombramiento de Jared Kushner, yerno de Donald Trump, como alto asesor de la Casa Blanca. Pero no recuerdo que muchos medios protestaran en la década de 1990, cuando Bill Clinton creó una oficina en el Ala Oeste para que su esposa Hillary, la ocupara mientras intentaba reformar el sistema sanitario de la nación. En un intento por irritar a Trump por la selección de su gabinete, algunos demócratas afirman que los nominados deben tener considerable experiencia en los asuntos pertinentes a ese departamento. Gran idea. Pero ¿por qué ningún miembro de los medios señaló que si esa ley regía cuando Barack Obama asumió su cargo, no podría haber nominado a Kathleen Sebelius como secretaria de salud y servicios humanos porque la gobernadora de Kansas no había estudiado medicina? ¿O a Hilda Solís como secretaria de Trabajo, ya que la ex legisladora nunca había sido activista laboral? O Anthony Foxx como secretario de transporte porque el ex alcalde de Charlotte, Carolina del Norte, nunca había administrado ferrocarriles, carreteras ni aeropuertos. Durante la campaña, los medios no fueron honestos cuando se trató, por ejemplo, de defender el uso de Hillary Clinton de un servidor de emails privado. Una y otra vez, muchos reporteros, locutores y comentaristas aceptaron toda manipulación de la información que la campaña de Clinton ofreciera sobre el escándalo. Mientras tanto, gracias a WikiLeaks, sabemos que la es-

tratega demócrata Donna Brazile--colaboradora en ese momento de CNN--no vio nada malo en filtrar una pregunta del debate a la campaña de Clinton, a fin de ayudar a torpedear la insurgente candidatura del senador Bernie Sanders. La connivencia entre la campaña de Clinton y los medios comenzó en realidad antes de que Clinton anunciara su candidatura a la presidencia. Nuevamente, gracias a WikiLeaks, sabemos que en abril de 2015, varias docenas de reporteros, locutores y comentaristas seleccionados que se esperaba que cubrieran la campaña, se reunieron en la casa de Washington del presidente de la campaña de Clinton, John Podesta, y en la casa de Nueva York de Joel Benenson, estratega jefe de Clinton, para celebraciones extraoficiales. En la lista de invitados se encontraban John Harwood, de CNBC y el New York Times--que jugó a asesor político y observó en un email a Podesta que “el partido de la oposición” se había “descarrilado”; Maggie Haberman, entonces reportera de Politico y ahora en el New York Times, que parece tener la reputación en el bando de Clinton de ser un conducto fiable para colocar sus versiones de los hechos, en tal medida que un operativo de la campaña en un momento expresó su confianza en que podrían “moldear más las cosas si iban donde Maggie”; y Glenn Thrush, entonces

Ahora leo que los reporteros están preocupados por el reto de tener que cubrir a Trump, ya que el presidente electo miente tan a menudo y sin esfuerzo alguno. Oh, sí. Si hay algo que los medios no pueden tolerar es la deshonestidad. ■

a historia reciente de Europa está marcada por el Telón de Acero que separó dos formas de entender la vida, la capitalista y la comunista, durante casi 30 años. Un cuarto de siglo después de celebrar un continente en el que cada vez desaparecían más muros, los Estados miembros de la Unión Europea han dado marcha atrás y comenzado a blindarse de nuevo, esta vez para tratar de evitar la llegada de cientos de miles de refugiados de Siria, Irak o Afganistán. Estas estrategias han inspirado al presidente Donald Trump en su propuesta para la construcción de un muro que impida la llegada de migrantes de forma ilegal desde México. Como desvelaba el Washington Post durante la campaña electoral, Trump confundió la valla de Melilla, una de las puertas desde África a Europa que separa Marruecos de la ciudad autónoma española en territorio africano, con la frontera con México. En el anuncio de 30 segundos aparecía uno de los saltos masivos a la valla que se producen en la frontera de Europa Sur, para recordar su propuesta de levantar un gran muro que evite la entrada de personas. Las imágenes correspondían en realidad a una grabación de 2014. De todas maneras, ésa es la valla precursora de la política de muros de la Europa moderna y la inspiradora del que quiere construir Trump. La valla de Melilla, que en realidad son dos, dejando un espacio de “tierra de nadie” en el medio donde se vulneran diariamente los derechos humanos, empezó a construirse en 1998 midiendo tres metros de altura. En su momento, costó casi 35 millones de dólares. Tras la crisis de migrantes del otoño de 2005, se elevó hasta los 6 metros. Hoy en día son 12 kilómetros de valla doble con una sirga tridimensional de 3 metros entre ellas, plagada de puestos de vigilancia, caminos entre las vallas para el paso de vehículos, sensores de ruido y movimiento o equipos de visión nocturna y cámaras térmicas. Además, recientemente se le ha añadido una malla metálica en la que es prácticamente imposible meter los dedos para ayudarse a trepar. La parte más polémica de estas vallas son las concertinas, unas cuchillas que se instalaron en 2005 con el fin de desalentar a quienes intentaran cruzar la frontera y que causaban profundos cortes a quienes lo intentaban. VARIOS INMIGRANTES PASAN la alambrada en la frontera entre Hungría y Serbia cerca de Roszke (Hungría), 27 de agosto de 2015. La Policía húngara interceptó a 3.241 personas, entre ellos 700 menores, tras cruzar la frontera de manera ilegal desde Serbia, un número que supone un récord de entradas en el país en un solo día, informaron las fuerzas de seguridad. EFE denuncias masivas de distintos colectivos consiguieron que el gobierno del socialista Rodríguez Zapatero que las había instalado, las retirara en 2007. Pero en 2013, el ejecutivo del conservador Mariano Rajoy volvió a colocarlas en un tercio del recorrido. A pesar de ello, miles de inmigrantes y refugiados que huyen de la guerra y el hambre consiguen saltar cada año. No contentos con los muros ya existentes, los diferentes Estados miembros han construido nuevas barreras para intentar frenar la llegada de refugiados. Uno de los más temidos es el muro de la llamada Jungla de Calais, un campamento improvisado en Francia en el que esperan quienes intentan colarse en los camiones que cruzan a Reino Unido a través del Canal de la Mancha. Tiene cuatro metros de altura y un kilómetro de longitud. Su construcción, que costeó el gobierno británico a pesar de encontrarse en suelo francés, ascendió a 2,7 millones de dólares. Calais es una de las últimas paradas en el recorrido de los refugiados en busca de una nueva vida. Tras superar la frontera marítima entre Grecia y Turquía, deben enfrentarse a los Balcanes, la región fría que se interpone entre el Mediterráneo y Alemania, destino de la mayoría de ellos. La primera frontera y la más complicada es la que separa Grecia de Macedonia, donde los refugiados recién llegados a la UE vuelven a abandonarla. Una valla plagada de concertinas junto a un agresivo ejército y policía, combaten la llegada de migrantes. Si consiguen cruzar ese umbral, se encontrarán una valla de espino de 175 kilómetros entre 12 / ENERO 18 - 25, 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com

Según un análisis de Reuters, Europa se ha gastado casi 600 millones de dólares en construir 1.200 kilómetros de valla desde la caída del Muro de Berlín. La cifra equivale a casi el 40% de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México.

Serbia y Hungría, la siguiente entrada de nuevo a la UE. El gobierno del conservador Viktor Orban, acusado de actitudes poco democráticas en su país, impone penas de 3 años de prisión a quienes crucen la frontera de forma ilegal. En 2015, casi 400.000 personas atravesaron el país de camino al centro de Europa. Si no fuera porque da miedo, que la caída del Telón de Acero empezara por un corte en la alambrada entre Hungría y Austria podría desencadenar la risa. No será suficiente. La última frontera antes de llegar a Alemania, la que separa Austria de Eslovenia, también fue sellada por alambres de espino que tienen más de 4 kilómetros de extensión y 12 controles en los pasos fronterizos que se han intensificado en los últimos meses. Como reacción, Eslovenia amenaza con levantar un muro parecido en su frontera con Croacia, como si de fichas de dominó se tratara. La Europa fortaleza también se acoraza en el Círculo Polar Ártico, entre Noruega y Rusia.

El primero quiere construir un muro de acero de cuatro metros de alto con la excusa de reforzar la seguridad en una de las puertas a la zona Schengen, el acuerdo que establece la libre circulación de ciudadanos europeos entre los países del continente. Pero no fue suficiente. La guerra de Siria y la falta de vías legales para pedir asilo en algún país de la UE sin jugarse la vida siguen empujando a cientos de personas en brazos de la mafia cada día, según datos de Frontex, la agencia europea para el control de fronteras. Diversas ONG han advertido de que el acuerdo vulnera los tratados internacionales de derechos humanos y creen que Turquía no asegura la protección de los refugiados. Contar la verdad con dibujos

e madre francesa y padre sirio, Riad Sattouf creció siendo un chiquillo rubio entre niños árabes que de vez en cuando le llamaban “judío” a modo de insulto por su cabello claro. El pequeño Riad no entendía esa fijación por llamarle judío, pero tampoco le importaba. Hoy en día, este reconocido ilustrador y dibujante de cómics de 38 años tampoco parece interesado en darle las culpas a nadie por los prejuicios que flotan tanto en Oriente Medio como en Occidente. Sin embargo, cuando decidió dibujar sus memorias en El Árabe del Futuro, sí tenía clara una cosa: quería decir la verdad, por muy cruel que fuese. El resultado es un cómic autobiográfico en tres volúmenes que retratan su infancia y juventud en la Libia de Gadafi y la Siria de Hafez Al-Assad. Con una mezcla de ironía e ingenuidad infantil, Riad Sattouf va narrando los hechos que marcaron su infancia en el Oriente Medio de finales de los años 70 y los años 80- episodios que no pueden ocultar su desagrado hacia una sociedad ultraconservadora y tradicional del mundo rural árabe – aunque deja que sea el lector quién haga sus propias interpretaciones. “Yo creo que en el paraíso habrá muchas bananas”, le dice en una viñeta Adnan, el niño libio que vive junto a su apartamento, en Trípoli. -¿Qué es el paraíso? , le responde Said. -Es un lugar magnífico donde vamos después de morir. La vida allí es más bella que aquí” La conversación entre Said y su vecino libio muestran el abismo cultural existente entre dos niños de mundos tan diferentes, a pesar de lo que le diga su padre, convertido en profesor universitario después de terminar la carrera en Paris. Orgulloso de sus raíces árabes y de su izquierdismo idealista, el padre de Said está convencido de que el mundo árabe tiene mucho futuro y decide aceptar un puesto de profesor en la Libia de Gadafi, llevándose a su mujer francesa y a su hijo consigo. Al llegar a Libia, la familia de Said se instala en una casa sin llaves, porque Gadafi había prohibido la propiedad privada – algo genial, según su padre - y al cabo de un día tuvieron que mudarse a otro apartamento porque

otra familia había ocupado su casa. A las pocas semanas, su madre fue despedida de su trabajo como locutora de noticias de radio porque no podía contenerse la risa cuando tenía que informar sobre las amenazas de Gadafi de invadir Estados Unidos y de asesinar a Ronald Reagan. A pesar de la propaganda política y las palabras alentadoras de su padre, en Libia la alimentación escaseaba, y muchas veces la familia se alimentaba de bananas. La madre de Said, Clementine, es paciente, no juzga la sociedad que le rodea, a pesar del machismo que la rodea. Intenta que Said escuhe sus cassettes de Brassens y aprenda francés para que no olvide su cultura, pero en ningún momento aparece diciendo que “Francia es mejor”. Sus abuelos maternos, a los que visitan una vez al año en su pueblo pesquero de la Bretaña france-

Tras un periodo en Libia, la familia se muda al pueblo natal de la familia Sattouf, una aldea rural en las afueras de Homs, en Siria. La Siria rural bajo el gobierno de Al Assad es un territorio mucho más hostil que Trípoli, con costumbres casi salvajes, en las que los niños se entretienen matando a perros y mascotas en la calle, para el horror del pequeño Said y de su madre. Pero una vez más, ni el niño ni su madre juzgan. Los dibujos, que cuando están basados en Siria adquieren un tono rosado, exponen una realidad, no la interpretan. Said, sin cuestionarse lo que ocurre a su alrededor – tampoco puede comparar con nada más – se adapta al colegio rural, en que los niños tardan dos horas caminando para llegar a la escuela

y la profesora les azota las manos con el bastón y les enchufa propaganda en la cabeza. “Mañana tendrá lugar un gran evento en nuestro país! Habrá elecciones presidenciales.
