res días después de que se venciera el plazo para postularse a ocupar de manera temporal la vacante dejada por Seth Williams en la Fiscalía Distrital de Filadelfia, se conocieron por fin los nombres de las catorce personas que se presentaron a la convicatoria hecha la semana pasada por la presidenta de la Corte del Common Pleas de Filadelfia, la jueza Sheila Woods-Skipper. La convocatoria fue publicada una semana después de que el exfiscal Williams reconociera ante un juez federal un cargo por corrupción y soborno como parte de un acuerdo con la jusiticia para evitar ser juzgado por otros 27 cargos por los que se le procesaba. En una carta enviada a la Philadelphia Bar Association, Woods-Skipper se dirigió a cerca de 12.000 jurisconsultos (entre abogados, jueces en ejercicio, fiscales, procuradores, jueces retirados), a los que invitó a ocupar el puesto que durante los próximos cinco meses y medio esatará a cargo de una entidad de 590 funcionarios y un presupuesto de $52 millones. El primer nombre que salió a la palestra fue el del juez retirado Paul Panepinto, quien presentó su candidatura muy temprano el viernes

LYNNE ABRAHAM Su carrera en el sistema judicial de Filadelfia inició en 1967 como fiscal asistente. Después pasó 4 años en la Corte Municipal. Después estuvo 11 años en la Corte Common Pleas de donde pasó a la Fiscalía Distrital, donde estuvo 18 años antes de retirarse en 2009.

D. WEBSTER KEOGH Llegó a la Corte de Common Pleas de Filadelfia en 1991, donde estuvo hasta 2003. En 2007 fue nombrado por la Corte Suprema estatal como juez administrativo de su Trial Division.

JOE KHAN Quizá es el más fresco de los candidatos, todo porque en la pasadas elecciones primarias demócratas, ocupó el segundo lugar detrás de Larry Krasner. Antes, Khan fue fiscal federal en el Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

KELLEY HODGE Actualmente abogada privada, Hodge hizo parte de la Fiscalía como fiscal asistente durante ocho años desde 2004. También trabajó como abogada del Safe School en 2011.

WILLIAM MANFREDI Este exjuez de la Corte de Common Pleas de Filadelfia sirvió duarente 31 años en esa entidad, donde pasó una década en la división de justicia criminal.

KATHLEEN MARTIN Es la actual fiscal interina de Filadelfia. Asumió el cargo desde el pasado 27 de junio cuando Williams presentó su renuncia. Llegó a la Fiscalía en 2015 como jefa de personal de la entidad.

CURTIS DOUGLAS Un fiscal municipal y federal con más de 25 años de experiencia. Se retiró del enten investigador en julio del año pasado.

LEON ARISTOTLE WILLIAMS Toda su carrera, desde 1983, la ha ejercido como abogado defensor.

ARLENE FISK Trabajó como fiscal asistente del Distrito durante 22 años antes de convertirse en una fiscal federal, cargo que sempeñó durante otrs 14 años.

BEN LERNER Actual director de Justicia Penal de la alcaldía. Fue director de la Asociación de Abogados Defensores de Filadelfia entre 1975 y 1990. En el 96 fue nombrado miembro del Common Pleas Court.

La limpieza del corredor de la heroína - ¿Tenemos una administración municipal adicta a la exclusión? Desencantado. Así se sintió Luis Cruz al ver que su empresa no tendrá ninguna opción de ser contratada para realizar alguno de los trabajos vinculados al proyecto conuunto de la alcaldía y la empresa Conrail para limpiar un tramo de la vía férrea a su paso por West Kensignton, más conocido como el corredor de la heroína o “El Campamento” de Filadelfia.

a empresa de Cruz, Cruz Development, está ubicada a escasas manzanas de este infame corredor, donde durante de los últimos 20 años han llegado a acumularse más de medio millón de jeringuillas usadas y un centenar de adictos a la heroína malviven en las chabolas de los alrededores. A pesar de que Cruz Development tiene más de treinta años de experiencia en trabajos de limpieza y construcción similares a los que se realizarán en el corredor de la heroína –y que, además, ha colaborado ya en otro proyecto con Conrail– ni la alcaldía ni la compañía de ferrocarril parecen considerar importante el hecho de que se contrate a empresas pertenecientes a minorías étnicas para este proyecto que se encargará de borrar una de las peores imágenes que Filadelfia lleva proyectando al mundo en las últimas dos décadas. No tienen “ninguna intención de contar con pequeñas empresas” para la realización de los trabajos de limpieza del READ IN corredor de la heroína, dijo Cruz en una ENGLISH entrevista reciente. NEWS.com/OPINION Otra empresa de las minorías que ha sido excluida de participar en el proyecto es la Industrial Commercial Cleaning Group (ICCG), compañía que se encarga de los servicios de limpieza de 42 estaciones de la SEPTA y otras 25 de la NJ Transit. Desde el pasado abril, todos los intentos de la ICCG por participar en el proyecto del corredor de la heroína se han encontrado con las puertas cerradas, igual que la empresa de Cruz. La inclusión de negocios propiedad de minorías en proyectos financiados con dinero público procedente de los contribuyentes es más que un asunto de justicia básica. En áreas como West Kensington, donde la tasa de pobreza roza el 47 por ciento; el desempleo supera el 19 por ciento y el riesgo de exclusión social crece, emplear a empresas de minorías tiene ventajas intangibles mucho más importantes. Luis Cruz aseguró que, durante todos estos años, su empresa ha invertido en la comunidad y recurre a ésta a la hora de contratar a sus trabajadores. “Las grandes corporaciones no se acercan a la comunidad”, expresó. Filadelfia carga a sus espaldas con un despreciable historial en lo que se refiere a excluir a las empresas pertenecientes a minorías de oportunidades de contratación en proyectos del sector público y privado. Hoy en día, mientras la administración municipal (el alcalde y el Concejo Municipal) promete mejorar la inclusión de las empresas y trabajadores de las minorías a través de la iniciativa “Rebuild” (un proyecto de medio billón de dólares para renovar los centros recreativos y bibliotecas de la ciudad), el gobierno de Filadelfia y Conrail firmaron el pasado 5 de junio un acuerdo para llevar a cabo la limpieza del corredor de la heroína que no incluye ninguna disposición específica para garantizar la participación de empresas de minorías.

¿Es este el fin de DACA? El Secretario de Seguridad Nacional, John Kelly, contempla la posibilidad de negar el Estatus de Protegido Temporal (TPS) a cientos de miles de inmigrantes en Estados Unidos. YAMILY HABIB

sí lo aseguró el congresista Luis V. Gutiérrez, tras reunirse junto con miembros del Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) con el secretario Kelly el pasado miércoles. Las preguntas que tenían los representantes hispanos para el secretario eran bastante obvias: ¿continuará el programa DACA (Plan de Acción Diferida para ciudadanos hispanos llegados al país cuando niños)? ¿Continuarán los arrestos de ICE contra ciudadanos sin récord criminal? ¿Se renovará el Estatus de Protegido Temporal? ¿Qué sucederá con los veteranos deportados? Tras las respuestas de Kelly, Gutiérrez considera que debemos prepararnos para lo peor: el inicio de una deportación masiva. “El Secretario Kelly determina el futuro del TPS y básicamente nos dijo que no está seguro de extenderlo para cientos de miles de personas. También dijo que el futuro de DACA depende del Fiscal General Jeff Sessions, el principal opositor nacional a la inmigración”, aseguró Gutiérrez en una columna publicada por el National Institute for Latino Policy. Para el congresista, DACA estaría condenado a morir, y con él el estatus de cientos de miles de ciudadanos hispanos que han vivido en el país durante muchos años. “Esta es una llamada de alarma sobre la determinación de Trump, Sessions y Kelly sobre una deportación masiva y su disposición a empezar lo antes posible”, continuó el congresista, urgiendo a la comunidad a tomar cartas en el asunto. Los asistentes a la reunión hicieron hincapié en el poder de decisión que posee el secretario de Seguridad Nacional, insistiendo en que de él depende el futuro de miles de personas, pero el funcionario sencillamente declaró que ese tipo de decisiones se encontraban fuera de su alcance y que era labor del Congreso cambiar las leyes si estas no satisficieran sus demandas. Según Gutiérrez, Kelly “o bien no entiende

EFE su autoridad sobre la ley actual o está obstruyendo o sencillamente está actuando muy bien de tonto, o quizá una combinación de las tres”, de manera de coincidir con la agenda del presidente de deportar a millones de personas, mientras pretende no entender el poder que tiene en el asunto. El programa DACA fue creado en 2012 por el presidente Barack Obama, para intentar proteger a los jóvenes llegados a Estados Unidos antes de cumplir los 16 años de edad. La mayoría de esos jóvenes, a pesar de haber pasado su vida entera en el país, siguen siendo considerados inmigrantes indocumentados bajo riesgo de ser deportados. El programa permite a los conocidos como “Dreamers” (“Soñadores”, en inglés) el acceso a la educación y la protección ante la deportación mientras no posean ningún antecedente penal, pudiendo acceder de la misma manera a un permiso de trabajo. Según Gutiérrez, alrededor de 800.000 personas estarían protegidas bajo este programa. Si bien el presidente Trump prometió durante su campaña eliminarlo, meses después de su inauguración aseguró que los dreamers no tendrían de qué preocuparse. Pero durante el mes de junio, su administración decidió terminar con el programa DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Resdents), que protegía a los padres inmigrantes indocumentados de niños ciudadanos estadounidenses. Durante el mismo mes, los fiscales generales de Texas y otros nueve estados Republicanos insistieron al fiscal general Jeff Sessions a eli-

minar DACA, amenazando a llevar el asunto ante los tribunales, según reportó la cadena hispana Telemundo. Frente a estas circunstancias, Kelly dijo a los congresistas hispanos que varios asesores legales le han convencido de que es poco probable que DACA sobreviva a una corte, negando por omisión el apoyo de la administración. “No indicó si ellos lo defenderían. Tampoco dijo que no lo harían”, diseñaló el senador demócrata Bob Menendez, “así que entre eso y lo que dijo sobre el análisis legal que ha escuchado, el asunto no pinta muy bien”, según reportó CNN. Nanette Díaz Barragán, representante demócrata de California, aseguró que los miembros del Caucus preguntaron a Kelly si estaría dispuesto a apoyar públicamente la legislación DACA, y que el secretario dijo que lo consideraría. Barragán aprovechó para recordarle al secretario que en otras oportunidades la administración había apoyado la preservación de algunas legislaciones, insistiéndole en que apoyara la legislación bipartidista conocida como la Bridge Act, que podría preservar el programa DACA, pero el secretario no prometió nada. Con Kelly lavándose las manos en el asunto y la frustración de los congresistas todo parece indicar que es hora de que la comunidad hispana se organice para defender sus derechos ante el peor de los escenarios. ■ Para más noticias nacionales visite nuestra web

La ignorancia de Trump no puede ser una excusa La verdad es que hay más rusos en estas historias de Trump que en una novela de Dostoievski y, como dijimos antes, es muy fácil cansarse, aburrirse, frustrarse, insensibilizarse de tanta estupidez y mala fe.

a han pasado seis meses de la presidencia de Donald Trump y es fácil cansarse, aburrirse, frustrarse, insensibilizarse de tanta estupidez y mala fe, de la novela de los rusos y las elecciones, la disposición del presidente a cerrar los ojos ante los chanchullos y triquiñuelas de su muy admirado Vladimir Putin, etc. Desafortunadamente, esto es lo que ha dominado las noticias excluyendo prácticamente otras informaciones sobre asuntos de mayor impacto en la vida de la población. Hace unos días, después de su muy anticipada reunión con Putin durante la cumbre G-20 en Hamburgo, Alemania, Trump anunció alegremente la creación de “una unidad de ciberseguridad” para garantizar que ninguna elección en EE. UU. pudiera ser manipulada nuevamente. Dicha unidad sería diseñada e implementada en colaboración con el presidente de Rusia, es decir, con el supuesto manipulador principal de las elecciones americanas. Como podrán imaginarse, el entusiasmo por semejante idea no fue general. Por ejemplo, el senador Lindsey Graham, republicano de Carolina del Sur, expresando lo que muREAD IN ENGLISH chos en el propio partido de Trump pensaban, calificó el plan como “muy cerca NEWS.com/OPINION de ser la idea más estúpida que haya escuchado jamás.” Como dicen en inglés: ¡ouch! Típico de Trump, quien no tiene respeto ni por él mismo, tras 12 horas de críticas incesantes se retractó de tal anuncio sin pudor alguno. “El hecho de que el presidente Putin y yo hayamos hablado sobre una unidad de ciberseguridad no quiere decir que yo crea que puede suceder”, escribió en su cuenta de Twitter el domingo por la noche. Bueno, usted sabe, él no es un político, no tiene experiencia en estos asuntos, está aprendiendo sobre el terreno, afirman los que todavía lo apoyan después de cada tuit ofensivo, mentira descarada o disparate estúpido. Es increíble, como tantas otras cosas en esta administración, pero esta gente parece creer que la ignorancia y la imprudencia del presidente son excusas válidas por haberse convertido en el hazmerreír mundial y haber regalado la seguridad nacional. Como si fuera poco, Trump se reunió también en Hamburgo con el mandatario mexicano Enrique Peña Nieto, quien comparte con él el dudoso honor de ser el presidente más despreciado de su país en muchas décadas. Es difícil de creer, pero Trump, delante de Peña Nieto, respondió a

una pregunta de un periodista diciendo que espera “absolutamente” que México pague por el infame muro fronterizo, una de sus promesas de campaña más indignantes. El presidente mexicano no protestó, no dijo palabra, sino que permaneció sentado junto a Trump, un escolar tímido aterrorizado por el matón de la clase. Los mexicanos estaban furiosos. “Trump dice otra vez que México pagará por el muro. ¿Cuándo se atreverá [Peña Nieto] a decirle en su cara y en público que México no va a pagar?’, manifestó en un tuit Jorge Ramos, el periodista de Univisión que, como se recordará, fue expulsado de una conferencia de prensa durante la campaña. Probablemente nunca, Jorge, probablemente nunca. Y para terminar por hoy, tenemos el escándalo del hijo mayor de Trump, Don Jr., quien se reunió durante la campaña –y lo negó después— con una abogada rusa supuestamente ligada al Kremlin que Jr. pensaba poseía información perjudicial sobre Hillary Clinton. Trump ha dicho que su hijo mayor (quien deja mucho que desear tanto en cerebro como en personalidad), es “una persona de alta calidad” y Jr. ha negado airadamente haber cometido algún acto ilegal. De todas maneras, por si acaso, Donny ha contratado los servicios de un abogado de alto perfil y, por supuesto, extremadamente caro. La verdad es que hay más rusos en estas historias de Trump que en una novela de Dostoievski y, como dijimos antes, es muy fácil cansarse, aburrirse, frustrarse, insensibilizarse de tanta estupidez y mala fe. Pero hay que hacer cualquier esfuerzo que sea necesario para mantenernos enojados, alerta, dispuestos a resistir a Trump y su pandilla de desalmados compinches. Hay que detener la persecución y el abuso de los inmigrantes, sus intentos de eliminar los duramente ganados derechos de las mujeres y los gays, su disposición de envenenar el planeta a cambio de ganancias, su apoyo al abuso policial, sus extraños y misteriosos tratos con Putin y Rusia. n Latinoamérica hay calles en las que el comercio del sexo y las drogas circulan y se mezclan libremente justo en las narices de la sociedad y las autoridades. Algunas de esas calles son conocidas como “zonas de tolerancia”, pequeñas periferias urbanas o territorios de nadie donde la decisión oficial es darle luz verde a la prostitución (y extraoficialmente, a todo lo demás que sucede en torno a ella) con el propósito de “controlar” problemas que, por su complejidad, es mejor tenerlos concentrados en su solo lugar que esparcidos por toda la ciudad. Filadelfia no es del todo ajena a este tipo de cosas, aquí también hay “periferias”; basta caminar a lo largo de la avenida Kensington (a cinco millas del centro) para tener una idea del drama que viven miles de drogodependientes, entre ellos muchas mujeres víctimas invisibles de tráfico humano. Quizá por ello no hay razón para que la ciudad se pierda la oportunidad de experimentar desde una óptica artística lo que significa ser puta y adicta, aquí o en Cafarnaum. Esa necesidad la sintió precisamente una artista hispana, nacida en El Paso y radicada hace años en Filadelfia. Con la intención de mostrar un poco de lo que pasa en la periferia (“de aquí o de Cafarnaum”), Ada Trillo acaba de inaugurar su exposición ‘How did I get here?’, un ensayo fotográfico que retrata en blanco y negro las secuelas que dejan en el cuero y el alma la

explotación sexual, la drogadicción y la pobreza en Ciudad Juárez. “Como mujer, me parte el corazón ver las circunstancias que estas mujeres enfrentan y me molesta que la sociedad las prejuzgue en vez de entender que la mayoría no está metida en ese mundo por placer sino porque son víctimas de las condiciones”, expresa Trillo. Y no es para menos. Su rabia y sentimiento de impotencia empezó justo en las calles de Kensington, donde la artista tuvo su primer encuentro con ese mundo periférico tan presente pero tan invisible a la vez. Un encuentro que quizá definió para siempre su mirada de artista. “Fue en ese lugar donde, por primera vez en la vida, tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar y fotografiar a una mujer embarazada, con marcas de inyecciones de heroína en su cuello y que se prostituía a plena luz del día”, recuerda Trillo mientras conecta inmediatamente ese momento, esas imágenes que guarda en su memoria, con las imágenes que ahora expone en pleno centro de Filadelfia. ¿Pero por qué mostrar algo del otro lado de la frontera que sucede aquí también? Quizá porque así como Filadelfia es hermana -en las buenas- de ocho ciudades, el drama de las drogas también puede hermanarla con ciudades como Juárez. “Vivo aquí y las galerías a las que estoy afiliada está aquí. [Sin embargo] Toqué tantas puertas como pude en México con el objetivo de exponer mi obra allá, pero no les interesó. El punto de mi trabajo es que este tipo de historias suceden en cualquier lugar del mundo, incluida Filadelfia”. Europa se asentó en Filadelfia, pero la cultura y lugares en los que creció siempre han ido de la mano de su producción artística. Su medio de expresión inicial es la pintura cargada de capas de oro y el simbolismo de Latinoamérica. Después de estudiar fotografía en la Universidad de las Artes de Filadelfia, Trillo se propuso retratar la inmigración a lo largo de la frontera entre México y EEUU, pero se dio cuenta de que su trabajo ponía en peligro la vida de los sujetos que trataban de cruzarla. En una iglesia de Ciudad Juárez, conoció a una mujer de la limpieza llamada Luli, que antes había sido prostituta. Luli se ofreció a acompañarla a visitar distintos burdeles de la zona, con el fin de despertar la conciencia ciudadana sobre los apuros que sufren las mujeres que trabajan allí.

EN LOS BURDELES DE JUÁREZ

“Es una zona muy peligrosa, no era muy consciente de que necesitas a alguien para que te acompañe,” comenta Trillo en su estudio, rodeada de las fotografías tomadas durante su estancia en Juárez. “Pensé que iba a encontrarme con un puñado de chicas guapas enfundadas en minifaldas brillantes, pero la realidad era muy distinta. Era más bien lo contrario: vi sobre todo mujeres totalmente explotadas, tan adictas a la heroína que la droga se convierte en su razón de vida. El único motivo que tienen para sobrevivir son las drogas. Están atrapadas, no tienen dinero propio y la mayoría sufre”. Tras ese primer encuentro con las prostitutas, Trillo se interesó por sus historias. Su intención era retratar su dignidad, sin ocultar la dura realidad de sus vidas. Quería hacer algo para ayudarlas, y pensó que lo que podía hacer era dar voz a esas mujeres a través de su arte. punto de vista, dejaría que fuesen sus fotografías las que hablaran por ellas. “No soy activista,” admite Trillo. “Soy artista, y el arte, para mí, es fundamental que despierte emociones. Cuando uno ve arte debe sentir algo, si ve arte y no siente nada, entonces es que no le ha conmovido.” Durante tres años consecutivos, Trillo destinó periodos de tres o cuatro meses a estar con prostitutas de Juárez. En 2015, el primer año, se dedicó a visitarlas. En México, la legislación sobre prostitución varía de estado en estado: de los 31 estados que tiene el país, 13 tienen una ley que regula el mercado del sexo. Y, según datos del Departamento de Estado de los EEUU, 22 estados mexicanos tienen leyes que prohíben el tráfico sexual, aunque rara vez se imponen. En Juarez, Trillo tuvo la oportunidad de ser testigo de todo esto. “Los policías están por todas partes”, recuerda la artista. “Se les ve fuera de los burdeles, bien relajados,” añade. En Juárez, las áreas donde la prostitución está descriminalizada se conocen como “zonas de tolerancia.” Por lo general, las trabajadoras del sexo mayores de 18 años están aceptadas en México, un país donde la práctica de relaciones sexuales con menores de edad es considerada ilegal. Debido a las restricciones edad, todas las mujeres fotografiadas por Trillo dijeron a la artista que tenían 27 años, aunque uno puede ver que son mucho más jóvenes a primera vista. Hacen esto para protegerse, ya que serían declaradas culpables en caso de que el propietario del burdel las acusara de mentir con la edad. Algunas incluso admitieron durante la entrevista que llegaron a Juárez como menores, solas. La mayoría de las trabajadoras de los burdeles visitados por Trillo no son originarias de Juárez, sino de otros estados del sur, o del resto de Latinoamérica.

Trillo comenta que a pesar de mentir con la edad y no expresar abiertamente que no quieren vivir en Juarez, es evidente que ninguna quería acabar en un burdel. “Es algo muy obvio, cuando una mujer te dice que empezó a los 13, nació en Guadalajara y sus padres viven en los Estados Unidos.”

EN LA SOMBRA

Aunque muchas de estas mujeres no tienen intención de cruzar con éxito la frontera con EEUU, no hay garantía de que se libren de los carteles de la droga, el tráfico de personas o el trabajo sexual. Durante muchos años, la cifra de mujeres y niños que son transportados de México a EEUU víctimas del tráfico sexual ha sido una incógnita. Un estudio realizado por el Observatorio Nacional Ciudadano sobre el tráfico de personas entre 2010 y 2013 solo consiguió recopilar información de 16 de los 31 estados que tiene Mexico; los 15 estados restantes no disponen de datos estadísticos sobre este problema. Un estudio realizado por la Universidad de Texas, publicado en 2017, estima que alrededor de 79,000 niños y jóvenes son víctimas de redes de tráfico sexual en el estado de Texas. Juárez está justo por encima de Río Grande, a una media hora en coche desde El Paso. El mismo estudio destapó que Texas es el segundo estado de EEUU con mayor cifra de víctimas de tráfico de personas: uno de cada cinco personas que pasan por el estado han sido víctimas de este crimen. Aunque cada vez aparecen más estudios, la falta de datos fiables sobre este problema es preocupante. De momento, solo tienen en cuenta las mujeres atrapadas en redes de tráfico en México y después transportadas a los EEUU. Organizaciones como InSight Crime estiman que cerca del 87% de las personas víctimas del tráfico hu-

Samantha Laub/AL DÍA News para enfermedades de transmisión sexual o contra la Hepatitis C.” El Articulo Journal of Urban Research estima que en las zonas fronterizas de Juarez más de 10,000 negocios han cerrado desde el año 2009, obligando a más de 230,000 habitantes a abandonar la ciudad. Según Articulo, buena parte de este fenómeno demográfico se debe al auge de la violencia vinculada al tráfico de drogas y a las bandas criminales. También se estima que solo en 2010 más de 3,000 personas fueron asesinadas en Juarez. Por su parte, La Jornada en Línea y Proceso reportaron en su día que cerca de 800 mujeres trabajadoras del sexo desparecieron o fueron asesinadas en la ciudad entre 2010 y 2014. Trillo también fue testigo de todo esto.

LAS VOCES DE LAS SILENCIADAS

El informe 2014 sobre el Tráfico de Personas, elaborado por la Oficina para el Control y la Lucha contra el Tráfico de Personas (perteneciente al Departamento de Estado), identificó que “el turismo sexual infantil persiste en México, especialmente en las zonas turísticas (…) y en las ciudades fronterizas del norte, como Tijuana y Ciudad Juárez. Buena parte del turismo sexual infantil proviene de EEUU, Canadá y Europa occidental, aunque también de México.” El mismo informe resaltaba que “es difícil evaluar los esfuerzos del gobierno por identificar y dar asistencia a las víctimas” debido a la “falta de datos estadísticos fiables” sobre la cifra exacta de mujeres y niños atrapados en redes de trata de blancas o tráfico sexual en México, o de México a los Estados Unidos. El tráfico sexual no solo es legal en algunos estados mexicanos. También goza de ciertos niveles de legalidad en Texas. Según la organización contra el tráfico de personas New Friends New Life, la legislación de Texas no castiga a los individuos que colaboran o participan en el transporte de trabajadores del sexo. La vaguedad de la ley en México y Texas ha favorecido la aparición del turismo sexual en determinadas zonas fronterizas. Trillo comenta que, si bien la situación de las mujeres en estas zonas es muy complicada, todavía lo es más en Juarez. “El turismo sexual está en otras zonas de la ciudad, más cercanas a la frontera. Muchos soldados destinados en Fort Bliss patrullan en el desierto entre Texas y Nuevo Mexico suelen cruzar la frontera para tener relaciones con prostitutas de Juarez,” explica Trillo, que aprendió a distinguir las “zonas de tolerancia”

de ciudad Juárez de las zonas de burdeles. “Estas mujeres no están en la misma posición: las prostitutas que tiene relaciones con clientes americanos cobran entre 25$ y 30$. Las chichas que yo he fotografiado cobran entre 3$ y 5$. Es un mundo totalmente distinto”. Según la Dra. Laura Bamford, especialista en Medicina Interna y Enfermedades Contagiosas y colaboradora de Philadelphia Fight, “las trabajadoras del sexo de todo el mundo tienen algo en común: a menudo han sido forzadas a prostituirse, víctimas de la trata de blancas, de la supervivencia económica y del abuso de sustancias tóxicas.” Más allá del abuso de drogas, y de su impacto negativo en la salud de estas mujeres y de las comunidades donde viven, el trabajo sexual por si mismo ya tiene un impacto negativo, teniendo en cuenta que la asistencia médica a la que pueden acceder las prostitutas en sus barrios suele ser limitada. “El enorme estigma que pesa sobre el trabajo sexual discrimina a las trabajadoras del sexo a la hora de tener acceso a servicios médicos básicos y fiables, como los tratamientos de rehabilitación de drogas, tratamiento y prevención contra el virus del Sida (HIV) o tratamientos

Si bien la idea inicial del proyecto de Trillo se inspiró en el problema con los inmigrantes en la frontera del suroeste de EEUU, la artista cree que los burdeles fotografiados no representan un problema fronterizo. Representan un problema de abuso de drogas y de abuso contra mujeres jóvenes. De las 20 mujeres fotografiadas para la exposición, dos han desaparecido. Claudia no ha vuelto a ser vista nunca más. Bonita fue asesinada. “Luli me explicó que esa chica fue secuestrada,” explica Trillo, apuntando a la fotografía de Bonita, envuelta en plástico y a punto de ser enviada a la Galería de arte Twenty-Two, en 236 South 22nd St, donde se expone la obra de Trillo hasta el próximo 6 de agosto. “Ella era diferente del resto. Un poco más rubia, con ojos color avellana. Cuando la entrevistamos parecía muy tímida, pero quiso continuar igualmente porque quería comprar crack. La última vez que regresé a Juarez, pregunté si podía hacerme una fotografía con Bonita. Los dueños del burdel me respondieron que no, porque había sido asesinada. Fue muy triste.” Las voces silenciadas de estas jóvenes mujeres emocionaron a Trillo, madre dos niñas en edad adolescente. “Todas estas mujeres siguen el mismo patrón: jóvenes, de clase humilde. Desaparecen porque no tienen voz.” Con la aprobación de la propietaria de Twent-Two Gallery, Shawn Murray, Trilllo ha decidido donar los ingresos de la venta de sus fotografías a dos organizaciones sociales: la Coalición contra el Tráfico de Mujeres, una red global sin ánimo de lucro que lucha contra el tráfico sexual, centrándose en los supervivientes y las víctimas. Y el Centro Maria Antonia, en Ciudad de Mexico. El centro pertenece a las Hermanas Oblatas del Santísimo Redentor, una orden religiosa fundada en Madrid en 1864 que se dedica a prestar asistencia a prostitutas con adición a las drogas y a sus familias. ■ Para ver más noticias locales visite nuestra web

Un informe de la Organización para la Cooperación Económica y el Desarrollo concluyó que en 29 estados del país, la tasa de sobrepeso y obesidad infantil supera los 30 puntos porcentuales. Especial para AL DÍA News a publicación de un reciente estudio en la prestigiosa revista The New England Journal of Medicine, arrojaba a principios de este mes datos sorprendentes y preocupantes sobre la incidencia del sobrepeso en la población mundial. Los investigadores analizaron los datos de 68.5 millones de personas sobre la prevalencia del sobrepeso y la obesidad entre los años 1980 y 2015. La fatídica conclusión de sus estudios se resume en

que el 5% de los niños y el 12% de los adultos son obesos. Unos datos que aún son más preocupantes si se analiza la incidencia de este problema en la comunidad latina. Tanto este estudio como otros anteriores, señalan a Estados Unidos como un país con importantes tasas de sobrepeso, encabezando la lista de los lugares con más adultos obesos. Y eso, lejos de ser tan solo un grandísimo problema de salud nacional, se ha convertido en dos. Parece que nuestros hijos no solo heredan nuestras costumbres culinarias sino que ade-


más han ido reduciendo su actividad diaria, acentuando de esta manera el sedentarismo y los niveles de obesidad infantil. El informe 2017 de la OECD, la Organización para la Cooperación Económica y el Desarrollo, hace hincapié en que la obesidad no es un problema que solo afecta a los adultos. De acuerdo a su más reciente estudio, uno de cada seis niños sufre de este mal. Pero es importante analizar aún más estos datos. Conscientes de que la obesidad es un problema inexistente en parte del mundo, no sorprende saber que de nuevo los niños estadounidenses son lo que encabezan las listas de obesidad infantil. Y la diferencia con el resto de países es sorprendente. Por ejemplo, mientras que un 10% de los quinceañeros daneses tiene sobrepeso u obesidad, la tasa en el caso de los niños estadounidenses sube hasta alcanzar el 31%.

el CDC, Centro para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, aconseja seguir una serie de recomendaciones. Como primer y necesario paso, se recomienda observar el consumo de calorías que realiza su hijo y su relación con su actividad física. Este consumo debe ser equilibrado y adecuado para su edad. Si observa que su hijo consume más calorías de las que debería, recuerde que usted no debe imponer una dieta sin consultar a un especialista.

ADIÓS A LAS TENTACIONES

Los snacks de media mañana o las meriendas de la tarde de nuestros hijos pueden suponer un momento complicado a la hora de seguir una dieta saludable. Habitualmente los niños están expuestos a meriendas a base de productos preparados. Con el fin de crear nuevos hábitos alimentarios en nuestros hijos, el CDC propone preparar tentempiés saludables que no sobrepasen las 100 calorías, tales como media manzana, medio plátano, una taza de frutas del bosque, uvas o zanahorias.

OBESIDAD EN EL ENTORNO LATINO

Observando los datos del estudio, concluimos que las tasas de obesidad en adultos estadounidenses revelan diferencias importantes entre comunidades. Un porcentaje muy alto de los obesos adultos de este país se corresponde con inmigrantes que llegaron a Estados Unidos y a su segunda generación. En el caso de los latinos, de acuerdo al último informe de The State of Obesity, un proyecto de Trust for America’s Health y la Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, la tasa de obesidad supera el 30% en 29 de los estados norteamericanos, llegando a superar el 42% en algunos lugares. Como ya hemos comentado, las tradiciones culinarias pasan de padres a hijos y la población latina no es una excepción. En el caso de los niños latinos, la obesidad es tres veces más frecuente entre los pequeños de entre 2 y 5 años que entre los niños blancos no latinos de la misma edad.

FACTORES DE RIESGO

¿A qué se debe este incremento? ¿Por qué es la población latina más vulnerable a sufrir enfermedades relacionadas con el aumento de peso? De acuerdo al estudio The State of Obesity, existen varios factores de riesgo que condicionan el aumento de casos de obesidad entre la población infantil. El nivel de estrés de las diferentes comunidades, el acceso a supermercados, la comida que se proporciona en el colegio, la salud de la mujer y la renta de los padres, son factores decisivos para este grupo. En el caso de la renta, parece que un nivel económico bajo puede tener una relación directa con la tasa de obesidad de los jóvenes de este colectivo. La razón de ello es el bajo precio que presentan los llamados productos ultraprocesados y la comida rápida. En ambos casos se trata de alimentos con bajo valor nutricional pero alto contenido en azúcar, grasa y sal, lo que promueve el sobrepeso. Además de ello, otro importante factor relacionado con el nivel económico tiene que ver con el incremento del precio de las frutas y las verduras. En Estados Unidos cada vez es más caro comer de manera saludable.

REDUCIR EL SEDENTARISMO

LA OBESIDAD EN niños latinos es tres veces más frecuente entre los pequeños de entre 2 y 5 años que entre los niños blancos de la misma edad. EFE

HÁBITOS SALUDABLES La prevención empieza por diseñar unos hábitos de vida saludables. Para ello se recomienda ayudar a los niños a entender que deben realizar un consumo responsable. Actividades como cocinar juntos e involucrar al niño en la compra semanal pueden ayudarle a orientar a sus hijos hacia unos hábitos de consumo más sanos. Además el CDC aconseja tener en cuenta los siguientes parámetros a la hora de planificar los menús familiares: • Consumir vegetales, frutas y productos integrales • Incluir en la dieta leche semidesnatada y desnatada y otros productos lácteos • Seleccionar carnes magras, aves, pescado, lentejas y frijoles para cubrir las necesidades de proteína • Servir porciones de tamaño razonable • Animar a su familia a aumentar el consumo de agua • Limitar las bebidas azucaradas • Limitar el consumo de azúcar y grasas saturadas

Este último punto junto con el hecho de que nuestros hijos pasan cada vez más tiempo delante de pantallas y menos tiempo activo de juego tradicional, ha hecho que las tasas de obesidad infantil se disparen.

¿CÓMO PUEDO AYUDAR A MI HIJO?

Debido al carácter grave de esta enfermedad y al incremento de las tasas en nuestros niños,

No solo nuestros hábitos alimenticios han cambiado en los últimos años. También lo ha hecho nuestro ritmo de vida. Los niños son los que más han acusado este cambio, cambiando los juegos en el parque por los ordenadores y las pantallas táctiles. La recomendación del CDC en este sentido es clara. Tanto niños como adolescentes deberían mantener una actividad física moderada durante al menos 60 minutos al día. Para ello se recomienda poner en marcha medidas tales como reducir el tiempo delante del televisor, videoconsolas y ordenadores y establecer un máximo de dos horas al día para estas actividades. Como alternativa los padres pueden organizar excursiones con sus hijos, pasear o incluso apuntarles a actividades deportivas que fomenten su implicación en el deporte.

CONSECUENCIAS FÍSICAS

Tanto el sobrepeso como la obesidad pueden tener consecuencias muy graves para nuestro organismo. Ambos problemas favorecen la aparición de diabetes tipo 2, enfermedades cardiovasculares e hipertensión, algunos tipos de cáncer, problemas psicológicos y enfermedades respiratorias. Cuando además la obesidad se manifiesta en la infancia, las niñas pueden sufrir de madurez prematura y ambos, niños y niñas, pueden tener problemas en el desarrollo de sus huesos y articulaciones. Es por tanto un problema grave que debe ser atajado cuanto antes. Si en su familia existe algún problema de obesidad, no dude en consultar con un especialista. El pasado martes, 11 de julio, la chef hispana Jen Zavala demostró que la comida mexicana es más que tacos y enchiladas. Con una muestra magistral sobre cómo hacer tamales -uno de los alimentos ancestrales al otro lado de la frontera- Zavala conquistó el corazón de los asistentes. Aquí una memoria fotográfica del evento, copatrocinado por la Independence Blue Cross, en el que una vez más se destacaron recetas nutritivas y saludables de la cocina latina en Filadelfia.
