Shakira and her influence in the U.S. Presidential Election

THE ARRIVAL OF Latino culture into the U.S. is moving fast into the mainstream, while the candidates for President of the United States are mostly confusing the nation with their carefully crafted rhetoric. Archivo/AL DÍA

This ‘‘Colombiana,” in the good, not bad sense of the word, is influencing more the U.S. mainstream culture than Julián Castro ever would do, even if he gets the shot of being the running mate of Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton.

W

hile some are screaming about fantasy apocalypses in the form of a non existent “invasion” through a certain symbolic and inefficient wall south of border, quite obviously they have missed the forest for the trees here: The arrival of Latino culture into the U.S. is moving fast all over into the mainstream as we speak, sometimes from the fringes, sometimes even from the center of the American society where it has been entrenched for decades. Very directly, the sounds and the flavors of this rich culture are naturally merging into the mainstream, LEA EN rubbing shoulders and mixing ESPAÑOL with all the ethnic groups residVEA VIDEO ing in this great nation, simulNEWS.com/OPINION taneously using multiple social platforms and technology channels that may make some people understandably nervous. But there is no reason whatsoever to be anxious. On the contrary, this can be a piece of great news: While the candidates for President of the United States are mostly confusing the nation with their carefully crafted rhetoric intended to create fears and elicit votes —very often demonizing

Latino culture and the Latino immigration revitalizing our neighborhoods— there is a multinational cultural pollination going on that will, positively, affect, international commerce, and eventually domestic and international politics —also positively— after this current death spam of our presidential campaign is finally over. The fantasy “invasion” that may confuse some uninformed people is not necessarily the one going on by foot across the border —as tragic as it is, mainly because the human crisis it generates— is not necessarily the one I am referring to, which is the one that really matters and is driving a subtle influence over the mainstream culture in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago or Philadelphia. Take Shakira, “La Colombiana,” that exceptional woman with the gift to conquer, to overcome, to invade, and, if allowed, take over, literally, either with the poetry of her pen, or the charm of her personality. Her recently released music video “La Bicicleta” is the first one I have watched from the beginning to the end, and several times, from the internationally known singer and composer born in the same country I did. After 30 years of living as expatriates in the

U.S., we have evolved obviously as human beings, becoming, among other things, citizens of the United States, a generous nation that has given refuge to our creativity, to our entrepreneurial spirit, to our aspiration to bless our fellow human beings with the abundant gifts of our rich, robust and largely misunderstood Latino Culture. Dear Donald Trump: Watch this (see Youtube video “La Bicicleta” with 28 million plus views in less than ten days). Watch twice, if you can, and sober up, sir. Dear Hillary Clinton: Don’t hesitate any more: Dare to enlist your people... Fully engaged by you, querida mamá o abuela Hillary, they will crush the opposition and put you in the White House in no time as if it were pure Shakira’s magic.

Día de acción por Puerto Rico en Filadelfia ALICIA LOZANO

Especial para AL DÍA News

M

Why Ohio Picks the President” (“El barómetro.

The sleeping giant is awake Latino voters have much at stake this election season. And with turnout numbers continuing to be as high as ever, the question remains: Will the political leaders of this nation finally will reach out to them and engage them so they finally show up at the polls?

s the Republican and Democrat National Conventions unfold over the next two weeks, making their case to voters across the country, a burning question remains: Will Latino voters show up at the polls, provided the leaders running for the top political office in the land decide to engage them head on, being the result of the election in November too close to call? Latino turnout LEA EN in recent elections ESPAÑOL has grown steadily, NEWS.com/OPINION with slight variations in number in recent elections. According to the Pew Research Center from 2013, a record 11.2 million Latinos voted in the 2012 presidential election. However their turnout rate stunningly decreased to 48 percent that year, from 49.9 percent in 2008. This year, turnout possibilities and what is at stake for the community are even higher than in past elections. Pew indicated in a recent report that 13 million Latinos are expected to cast ballots in 2016, up 17 percent from the last election. Among their findings in an election study, Pew reported that “nearly three-quarters of latino voters (72 percent) also say the treatment of racial and ethnic minorities is a very important issue to their decision in the Fall.” This signals a clear advantage for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary

Clinton, who has a clear lead over the bigoted rhetoric introduced by Donald Trump from day one of his campaign. However, analysts have implied that patterns across the diverse landscape of Latinos in the United States are still unpredictable. Neither candidate receives strong support from Latino voters. Not surprisingly: No one of the two candidates, neither Republican Donald Trump, nor the Democrat Hillary Clinton, have open their mouths to acknowledge they do exist, beyond the false spectrum that they are mostly undocumented human beings— not US Citizens, as the majority are, capable to elect Presidents of the United States, or unelect them. One of the two should break ranks and find courage to speak to Latinos as equals, in the second person of the singular (like in “you, fellow Americans”). Isn’t it telling enough that Latinos reflect the general trend which shows most are voting against a candidate’s opponent, not for a candidate? Is Hillary really interested in engaging? Does she really cares? Or, like Trump, she is simply using the Latino factor —now that Sanders is gone— for the political laboratory of the Democratic Party, perhaps too full of running little mices. A Clinton-Trump stand-off in November can still have an unexpected result. Stay tuned. ■

nal Rockefeller University, VA San Diego Healthcare System, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln y University of Utah.
