Habiendo modificado las proyecciones del año fiscal durante una presentación de revisión del proyecto a cinco años, la oficina declaró que se mantendrían en pie las proyecciones para el año 2018, a pesar del déficit. Pero más allá de los ingresos, el impuesto sobre las bebidas está enfrentando grandes retos.

l impuesto sobre las bebidas gaseosas, implementado desde principios de año, no le está yendo muy bien que digamos. Con cerca de 4.000 bebidas grabadas y poco más de 5.7 millones de dólares recolectados en enero, las expectativas eran más grandes de lo alcanzado hasta ahora. El problema surgió cuando se conocieron los primeros reportes en los que se habla de un déficit de $20 millones a pocos días del cierre del año fiscal 2016-2017. Según las proyecciones oficiales, para finales de junio, la ciudad debía obtener $46.2 millones, sin embargo a dos semanas de que esto ocurra solo se han recolectado $25.6 millones. Aunque la cantidad de dinero es insuficiente, lo logrado hasta el momento será utilizado para financiar programas de atención de la primera infancia (jardines infantiles), parques urbanos, centros recreacionales y bibliotecas públicas. Según un informe del Philadelphia Business Journal, durante el mes de abril sólo 6.5 millones de dólares fueron recibidos por la administración local. Estos ingresos sobrepasaron la meta de enero por un alto margen, lo cual le hizo pensar a la ciudad que la tendencia seguiría, considerando que habían anticipado que el impuesto tardaría un poco en lograr que todas las partes involucradas se acostumbraran y se apuntaran al pago del arancel. Con una carga tributaria de 1.5 centavos de dólar por cada onza de gaseosa, el impuesto sobre las bebidas azucaradas necesitaría producir 20 millones de dólares de aquí al final de junio para alcanzar su meta. La posibilidad de que esto suceda es poco probable, considerando que el recaudo promedio más alto por mes ha sido de $7 millones, ocurrido durante el mes de marzo. La ciudad ha enfrentado recientemente una demanda por parte de la Asociación de la Bebida Americana (ABA), lo que supone un esfuerzo para superar los obstáculos legales que, por otro lado, tienen congelados los fondos que la ciudad ha logrado obtener del impuesto. En la Corte Estatal durante la semana pasada, la ciudad ganó uno de estos escollos legales en una sentencia de 5 contra 2 miembros del jurado a favor del impuesto. La decisión desestimó la apelación de la ABA en el Tribunal de Demandas Comunes de Filadelfia, que dictaminó en diciembre que el impuesto es legal. La ABA pretende llevar la apelación a la Corte Suprema del estado. Por otro lado, el pasado jueves, la alcaldía de la ciudad declaró una aprobación preliminar a un programa que destinará algunos de los ingresos del impuesto en parques, centros de recreación y librerías. La aprobación final de ese programa, conocido como “Rebuild”, se someterá a voto en el la administración local este jueves, 22 de junio. Lauren Hitt, una vocera de Kenney, habló el pasado viernes sobre la legislación con el Philadelphia Inquirer, declarando que eran “tan sólo rumores” y descartando la próxima audiencia como parte de los esfuerzos para atacar el impuesto. Asimismo explicó que el senador estatal Anthony Hardy Williams es un antiguo ejecutivo de Pepsi quien “ha estado muy involucrado” con el esfuerzo, incluyendo la introducción de un informe legal por parte de tres docenas de legisladores estatales durante el mes de febrero, que apoyaba la apelación de la ABA en la Corte del Territorio Autónomo. El punto final de Hitt fue el más fuerte: si la Asamblea General presiona para deshacer el impuesto de Filadelfia, esos legisladores serían los autores políticos de los recortes en educación preescolar, escuelas comunitarias, centros de parques y recreaciones y librerías en la ciudad. ■ Para más noticias locales visite nuestra web

Hace un par de semanas, este comandante de las fuerzas áreas nacido en Los Angeles de madre salvadoreña supo que había sido seleccionado entre otros 18.300 candidatos para formar parte del selecto equipo de 12 hombres y mujeres que la NASA entrenará a partir de agosto en el Johnson Space Center de Houston, Texas, para convertirslos en los futuros astronautas del país. “Estos hombres y mujeres merecen ser felicitados con entusiasmo. Niños de todo el país soñarían hoy estar en su lugar. Desde la NASA, les damos la bienvenida y estamos impacientes por trabajar con ellos con el fin de inspirar a la próxima generación de exploradores,” dijo la también hispana Ellen Ochoa, directora del centro al anunciarse el equipo seleccionado. Entre las posibles misiones espaciales que deparan a los doce cosmonautas en 2019 se incluye participar en proyectos de investigación en la Estación Espacial Internacional, tripular naves espaciales construidas por compañías privadas con fines comerciales, o viajar al espacio en cohetes de la NASA. Rubio, de 41 años, es el único latino entre los 12 seleccionados, aunque la NASA ya cuenta con diversos hispanos en su lista de cosmonautas. El primero en viajar al espacio con la agencia espacial fue el costarricense Franklin Chang-Díaz, uno de los hombres con más horas pasadas en el espacio, con siete misiones llevadas a cabo entre

1986 y 2002. Otros astronautas latinos destacados son José Hernández, de padres mexicanos, que estuvo diez años en la NASA, o el puertorriqueño Joseph M. Acaba, que en mayo de 2004 fue seleccionado en el Grupo de Formación de Astronautas de la NASA el mismo que acaba de elegir a Rubio. Quizás el nombre latino más famoso en la industria espacial norteamericana sea el de Ellen Ocha, ingeniera y astronauta nacida en Los Angeles en 1958, de padres mexicanos. En 1993 Ochoa se convirtió en la primera mujer latina en viajar al espacio al subirse a bordo del Discovery, permaneciendo en órbita nueve días. Desde entonces, ha volado cuatro veces al espacio, sumando cerca de mil horas en órbita. “Sólo puedo imaginar el asombro y el orgullo que mis abuelos, nacidos en México en la década de 1870, hubieran sentido al saber que su nieta creció para viajar al espacio. Vinieron a Estados Unidos para levantar a su familia. Junto a la pasión de mi madre por el aprendizaje, tuve la oportunidad y la motivación para educarme y proponerme metas altas,” escribió Ochoa en el

Al terminar los estudios de Secundaria en Miami, Florida –la ciudad donde vivió la mayor parte de su vida– Rubio se graduó en la Academia Militar en West Point (Nueva York) y obtuvo un Doctorado en Medicina de la Universidad de Servicios Uniformados de las Ciencias de la Salud en Bethesda (Maryland). Antes de iniciar los estudios médicos, Rubio computó más de 1.100 horas de vuelo en misiones militares –600 en combate– en Afganistán, Bosnia e Irak, pilotando un helicóptero UH-60 Blackhawk. Actualmente, el salvadoreño-americano es miembro de las Fuerzas Aéreas Especiales (Airborne), en las que sirve como médico y cirujano de abordo. Es evidente, pues, que Rubio no tendrá demasiados problemas para superar las diferentes pruebas de entrenamiento diario, que incluyen largas caminatas con gravedad cero, dietas estrictas, simuladores de manejo de naves espaciales, y hasta clases de ruso —para poder comunicarse con sus colegas de la Estación Espacial Internacional—, según explica EFE. Sueños truncados por los papeles: de ser científico a manejar una “lonchera” EFE

ras ganar un reconocido concurso de robótica, el “soñador” Lorenzo Santillán tuvo la oportunidad de ser científico, pero su estatus migratorio le impidió tener una beca universitaria y tuvo que buscar una alternativa que llegó en forma de un camión de comida ambulante que llamó “Ni de aquí, ni de allá”. Santillán formó parte del equipo de estudiantes indocumentados de la escuela secundaria Carl Hayden Community de Phoenix (Arizona) que en 2004 ganó un concurso de robótica acuática al imponerse a universidades destacadas como el reputado Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT). Este éxito, que inspiró el documental “Underwater Dreams” y la película “Spare Parts”, con George López, Jamie Lee Curtis y Marisa Tomei, le abrió las puertas realizar una carrera universitaria, pero su estatus migratorio le impidió acceder a las becas que le ofrecieron y pagarse una carrera universitaria era imposible. Con todo, Santillán está convencido de que carecer de documentos no debe detener a los estudiantes indocumentados para abrirse camino. No se dejó vencer y concluyó sus estudios de cocina en un colegio comunitario y ahora dirige un camión de comida ambulante que es el espejo de estos jóvenes con sueños y aspiraciones en un país donde los estudios tienen límites. “Como indocumentado uno siente tristeza, pero no por eso vas a parar tu vida para que se complazcan otras personas. Claro que tuve muchas oportunidades después de ganar ese concurso de robótica, pero al ser indocumentados no podíamos aplicar para las becas que nos ofrecían”, explica. Pero, a falta de becas, un artículo de prensa publicado en 2005 que relataba la vida de estos jóvenes indocumentados destinados al fracaso pero que lograron el triunfo sobre centros educativos de alto prestigio, los llevó a la prensa nacional e internacional. “Ese artículo llamó la atención de cómo unos jóvenes indocumentados, latinos, del desierto, en una escuela donde predominan las pandillas y la violencia pudieron vencer en un concurso de robótica”, rememora Santillán. “Recibimos fondos de personas de todas partes del mundo. Nos dieron 100.000 dólares de donaciones, así que como éramos cuatro estudiantes a mí me tocaron 25 mil dólares; esa fue mi beca para estudiar cocina, no tuve que ser ciudadano para recibir una beca”, dice el joven con una orgullosa sonrisa. DACA que el expresidente Barack Obama concedió a jóvenes indocumentados que llegaron al país de la mano de sus padres indocumentados cuando eran apenas unos niños, emprendió una nueva empresa que une tanto a la cultura mexicana como la estadounidense: la comida. “Mi comida es esencia mexicana, pero también tiene toques americanos, por eso mi negocio es ‘Ni de aquí, ni de allá’. No es un nombre memorable, pero refleja lo que vivimos los ‘dreamers’ aquí. No somos aceptados totalmente en este país, pero tampoco podemos regresar a un país que no conocemos”, explica. Santillán, que llegó a Phoenix con apenas nueve meses de edad desde Michoacán (México), señala que nunca ha visitado su país de origen. “Es casi imposible que me regrese a un país que nunca he conocido. Por eso me decidí por la cocina, es una manera de regresar a México por medio de la cultura culinaria”, asegura satisfecho, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta las perspectivas que se cernían sobre su futuro. Recuerda que, de todos los estudiantes de aquel grupo de 2004, él fue siempre el más problemático, pues siempre estuvo rodeado de un ambiente de pandillas y violencia.

El documental “Underwater Dreams” se acerca al éxito de 2004 de Santillán y sus compañeros Cristian Arcega, Luis Aranda y Óscar Vázquez, y les acompaña años después a Boston a conocer a los estudiantes de MIT a los que derrotaron para reflejar la disparidad que les deparó el futuro a los componentes de los dos equipos. En aquella época no existía DACA, aprobado en 2012, por lo que no Santillán no pudo acceder a una beca que le costeara sus estudios de robótica, a pesar de recibir varias propuestas. “Así que tuvimos que hacer, lo que nos quedaba hacer. ace casi dos meses la Universidad Cabrini inauguró su Centro de Estudios sobre Inmigración, el primer escenario académico en Filadelfia dedicado exclusivamente a estudiar la migración como fenómeno social, económico y político, así como a promover expresiones culturales para reivindicar y crear conciencia sobre los principales problemas que afectan a la comunidad inmigrante de la región. El proyecto académico es un paso más de esta institución educativa en un camino que sus fundadores trazaron hace ya 60 años con el legado de la madre Francis Xavier Cabrini como faro: proteger y brindar apoyo a todas aquellas personas que por cualquier razón se vieron obligadas a buscar una vida mejor lejos de su país de origen. En ese sentido, el Centro de Estudios sobre Inmigración se proyecta como un lugar cuyo
objetivo principal es crear conocimiento riguroso y urgente en tiempos en los que la “posverdad” o “verdad alternativa” se abre paso en la agenda política de Washington D.C. y la Casa Blanca. Una especie de ejercicio académico en el que la educación es entendida como la mejor herramienta para frenar la ola de estigmatización en contra de minorías étnicas. Para lograrlo, Abel Rodríguez, su director, afirma que una las principales actividades que se impulsarán desde el centro será la articulación de la investigación académica con el trabajo comunitario que organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro adelantan en Filadelfia y el resto de Pensilvania en defensa de las comunidades inmigrantes. “He estado solo dos años en Cabrini y sé de los esfuerzos que la institución ha dando tiempo atrás para entender estos temas. Lo que hicimos fue pensar en cómo podíamos unificar los esfuerzos para expandirlos y tener un efecto mayor en la agenda migratoria. La idea entonces fue crear el centro que se volviera un foco de articulación de todo el trabajo sobre temas migratorios que se ha hecho antes, organizarlo mejor y expandirlo más allá de la universidad, a nivel estado y, ojalá, a nivel nacional”, comenta Rodríguez en entrevista con Al DÍA. verdad es que el centro apenas está dando sus primeros pasos (está en etapa pre-operativa: búsqueda de un espacio físico en el campus de la universidad o en Norristown y de recursos financieros para sostener las investigaciones y eventuales contrataciones de personal académico). Pese a ello, el Centro de Estudios sobre Inmigración ya tiene un norte definido: llegar a convertirse en la principal fuente académica sobre temas migratorios con capacidad de prestar asesoría técnica dirigida esencialmente a legisladores estatales para lograr un diseño e implementación de leyes más justas “Estoy muy entusiasmado de que de alguna manera seamos pioneros en la región con este tipo de centros y de que (en la Universidad Cabrini) nos hayamos puesto de acuerdo para dar este paso”, expresó Rodríguez al tiempo que señaló que este es el momento propicio para que Filadelfia tenga un lugar que se dedique a analizar la migración lejos de cualquier partidismo y más cerca de una postura científica que permita ponerle fin a tantos malentendidos y mitos que sitúan a los extranjeros como el enemigo número uno de la clase trabajadora estadounidense. UN DIRECTOR LATINO
Que el Centro de Estudios sobre Inmigración sea una propuesta pionera liderada en la región por una universidad cuya misión se centra en el trabajo social de la madre Cabrini no es una sorpresa; que su director sea un hispano nacido en Sounderton, a 40 millas al noroeste de Filadelfia y crecido en el seno de una familia cubana —cuyos padres emigraron de la isla por separado en 1969—, es una feliz coincidencia. Abel Rodríguez es el hombre detrás del proyecto. Este especialista en derecho migratorio se vinculó a Cabrini hace dos años como profesor de Religión, Leyes y Justicia Social; sin embargo su experiencia profesional en pro de los derechos de los inmigrantes —como abogado y activista— le otorga los pergaminos suficientes para liderar la incursión de la academia en la causa migratoria. Abogado egresado de la Universidad de Pensilvania y con experiencia en el trabajo comunitario en el Norte de Filadelfia, este hispano en10 / JUNIO 21 - 28, 2017 / ALDÍAnews.com

Director del Centro de Estudios sobre Inmigración de la -Universidad Cabrini tiende como pocos las dificultades que atraviesan miles de inmigrantes y refugiados en EEUU. Y es que la inmigración la lleva en su ADN: su papá fue un balsero cubano que logró abrirse camino hasta Pensilvania para trabajar durante buena parte de su vida en la tradicional panadería Stroehmann. Su mamá pasó otros tantos como niñera sin recibir aumento “por su condición de inmigrante”. Rodríguez recuerda haber crecido en medio de esas dificultades y de la falta de educación que muchos estadounidenses tienen acerca de minorías étnicas como la latina. Por eso se propuso llevar a las aulas de clase su experiencia como activista en la frontera con México, como abogado migratorio y como hijo de una familia latina que corrió todos los riesgos imaginables para asegurarse una mejor calidad de vida. Rodríguez habló con AL DÍA sobre este y otros temas que se propone abordar en el Cen-

Matthew Lester tro de Estudios sobre Inmigración de la Universidad de Cabrini. ¿Podría explicarnos los motivos de abrir este centro y cuáles son sus objetivos? La inmigración no es un tema nuevo para Cabrini. No es un tema que haya empezado a preocuparnos hace pocos días. Antes de mi ya hubo diversas personas que se encargaron de informar a los estudiantes sobre asuntos migratorios, de implicarlos en tareas de abogacía y lobbying. Obviamente, la Madre Cabrini es la santa patrona de los inmigrantes, así que, por supuesto, siempre estuvo allí [...] La universidad lo ve como un progreso natural de la misión del centro, dar continuidad al trabajo de la Madre Cabrini y a su legado, al trabajo de las hermanas… Es dar continuación a todo el trabajo realizado durante más de una década [...] Los objetivos del centro: somos una organización académica independiente centrada en asuntos migratorios y de inmigración. Uno de los objetivos básicos será utilizar la investigación y el conocimiento para tomar acción - para conseguir despertar la conciencia ciudadana sobre temas migratorios e, idealmente, influir en las políticas sobre inmigración. Nos vemos a nosotros mismos trabajando estos temas en diversos niveles [...] Poniéndolos en orden: educación y defensa, despertar la conciencia
pública, aumentar el compromiso ciudadano y la abogacía, etc. Esto es lo que enseño en mis clases. En verdad, la idea básica es conseguir más gente implicada en temas de abogacía. Luego, todo este trabajo necesita estar basado en investigación, conocimiento y hechos [...]. Y por último, asegurar que Cabrini continúa siendo una universidad acogedora, con la esperanza de sirva de modelo para otras instituciones. ¿Se imagina un futuro donde la retórica en contra de los inmigrantes latinos se reduce y nosotros, la comunidad hispana, somos aceptados por la sociedad? Sí, aunque no llegará tan pronto. Basándonos en cómo han evolucionado las distintas oleadas de inmigración en nuestro país en el pasado, sabemos que tarde o temprano ocurrirá. Con el tiempo, los inmigrantes han ido siendo aceptados. Los chinos estuvieron excluidos durante décadas, hasta que finalmente dejaron de estarlo. No estoy diciendo que ya no exista animosidad hacia los inmigrantes asiáticos, sino que el foco ha ido cambiando con los años. Pasó de los inmigrantes chinos a los irlandeses e italianos, después a los judíos, y ahora a los latinos. Puedo visualizar que estos sentimientos cambiarán en el futuro, pero no en un futuro temprano. Aunque también creo que con el tiempo, a medida que la población esté mejor formada sobre estos temas y la población hispana siga creciendo en Estados Unidos, los sentimientos de animosidad se reducirán. Una vez sean aceptados por la sociedad, ¿cómo pueden los latinos evitar convertirse en parte del grupo que prejuzga a las comunidades marginadas y a los inmigrantes? La clave es recordar el pasado. No olvidar las experiencias que sufrieron nuestras fami-
lias, no olvidar a nuestros padres, abuelos o bisabuelos, las razones por las que emigraron o que les forzaron a dejar sus países atrás. Es fundamental recordar todo esto y no olvidar el pasado, porque una vez olvidamos el pasado, es fácil caer en el típico “Oh, ¿quiénes son estos recién llegados?” y repetir mitos como: “¿Quién es toda esta gente que viene a quitarnos nuestros empleos?” o “por su culpa va a aumentar la criminalidad”, etc. Creo que no olvidar el pasado es absolutamente esencial. Y hay diferentes maneras de recordar este pasado, no solo compartiendo historias con la familia, sino también asegurando que los historiadores tengan en cuenta estas historias. El mundo académico también debería asumir el rol de no olvidar los obstáculos que nuestras comunidades tuvieron que afrontar para llegar hasta aquí. La comunidad latina juega un rol fundamental en esta sociedad, todavía dividida racialmente por el color de piel. ¿Ve usted alguna conexión entre los latinos y el resto de grupos? Lograr que nuestros derechos sean respetados en Estados Unidos, ver nuestros derechos plenamente realizados y reconocidos, es algo que no nos será concedido, y no creo que sea algo que deberíamos esperar que nos concedan. Es algo por lo que tendremos que luchar. Y creo que gracias a esta lucha podremos ser parte del proceso de unificar el país y transformarnos en un puente entre diferentes grupos. LA SANTA PATRONA DE LOS INMIGRANTES tes del mundo oriental. Cuando le planteó sus planes al papa León XIII, él le insistió en que fuera “a Occidente en vez de Oriente”. Fue así como la hermana Cabrini llegó a continente americano a finales del siglo XVII. En Nueva York se dedicó a prestar servicio a las comunidades de inmigrantes italianos que llegaban a la ciudad y a otras regiones del país. Su legado por la justicia social, por un bien común y el bienestar de los inmigrantes ha permanecido vigente gracias a la labor educativa de la Universidad Cabrini, reconocida el año pasado como “universidad del año” por el Instituto Hispano Nacional. Con el Centro de Estudios sobre Inmigración, esta institución académica da un paso más en su misión de empoderar a estudiantes inmigrantes de Latinoamérica y otros lugares del mundo que viven en el área de Filadelfia.

La promosión de la justicia social no es una tarea nueva para la Universidad Cabrini, inaugurada en 1957 bajo el legado filosófico de Francis Xavier Cabrini, una católica devota desde su nacimiento en 1850 en Sant Angelo Lodigiano, a pocos kilómetros de Milán, Italia. Luego de su migración a Estados Unidos, se convirtió en la primera ciudadana estadounidense declarada santa tras ser canonizada por el papa Pío XII en 1946. En 1950 el mismo pontífice la declaró “santa patrona de los inmigrantes” y en 1952 fue declarada inmigrante italiana del siglo por la American Committee on Italian Migration de Nueva York. Cabrini fundó el Instituto de las Hermanas Misioneras del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús en 1880 con otras siete monjas. Juntas, la hermandad buscó donaciones para financiar las expediciones misioneras en esquinas distan-
dice, culturalmente somos muy diversos, así que creo que podemos actuar como un puente y un unificador para el país. Esto implica, antes de nada, concluir nuestra batalla para ser reconocidos plenamente como una parte de este país. Estamos todavía en un punto en el que los latinos son considerados los “otros”. Creo que a medida que crezcamos para integrarnos plenamente [...] , que seamos capaces de luchar y asumir roles de liderazgo, podremos superar las brechas pendientes y posiblemente unir al país. Se dice que Filadelfia no puede ser una “ciudad santuario” a causa de la elevada presencia policial. ¿Está de acuerdo? El alcalde Kenney dio un gran ejemplo al cambiar el término “ciudad santuario” por “ciudad amparada en la Cuarta Enmienda”. Lo ha hecho por un buen número de razones, y una de ellas es la historia del concepto “santuario”. En la década de los 80 y los 90, “santuario” fue un movimiento de desobediencia civil muy fuerte, donde la gente ofrecía [a los inmigrantes] cobijo de las autoridades de inmigración. Esto no es lo que las ciudades están haciendo hoy. Las ciudades están cumpliendo con la ley, simplemente han elegido no cooperar con los agentes federales de inmigración en determinadas situaciones. [La organización] Juntos se ha esforzado mucho en este aspecto, explicando que no necesariamente debemos definirnos como “ciudad santuario” porque a pesar de que algunos de nosotros apoyamos este concepto — en términos de no respetar a los agentes del ICE—, no hemos conseguido el estatus total de santuario porque sigue habiendo una elevada vigilancia y presencia policial en los barrios donde habitan comunidades de color. “No hay guacamole para los anti-inmigrantes”:
la experiencia de una artista callejera pintando la frontera en Arizona
PARTICIPAR EN EL Street Art Mural Project de Ajo, le dio a Harriet la oportunidad de conocer la experiencia de la migración mexicana. Archivo particular una reacción positiva y por eso hice de mi mural un sutil homenaje a su ubicación. El mural es un personaje femenino grande y tranquilo que lleva un tocado. El tocado es, por supuesto, un guiño a la comunidad nativa. Ajo es en realidad el suelo nativo americano y parte de la nación Tohono O’odham. La reserva está sufriendo y está siendo empujada al aislamiento absoluto. El tocado se compone de la fauna de Arizona, criaturas y plantas que son únicas en esa parte del mundo. La mujer está descansando delante de un círculo gigante naranja-cobre que representa las famosas puestas de sol del estado, pero también la gigante mina de cobre abandonada que fue construida alrededor de Ajo.
Mientras el odio parece resurgir en todo el mundo, la ciudad fronteriza de Ajo lucha por la esperanza a través del arte. ESPERANZA ESCRIBANO

arriet Wood, artista callejera, vive en Barcelona pero viaja por todo el mundo con su trabajo. Se encontró en Arizona y decidió participar de la integración comunitaria en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Organizó un crowdfunding y obtuvo en tiempo récord la financiación para viajar a Ajo y participar en el Street Art Mural Project. Allí donde los partidarios de Trump disparan a los enormes tanques de agua que la gente de Ajo deja en el desierto a los migrantes para salvar sus vidas, Wood encontró unidad, elegancia y apoyo. Cruzar la frontera abrió sus ojos, que nunca volverán a ver el mundo igual. ¿Cómo llegó a la idea de financiar su proyecto a través de un crowdfunding? ¿Cómo se puso en contacto con el Street Art Mural Project de Ajo? Oí por primera vez sobre el Ajo Street Art Project en septiembre cuando visité a un amigo en Arizona. (Siempre) Trato de llegar a la escena local de
HARRIET WOOD, “HAZARD” es una artista urbana que dejó su obra solidaria plasmada en las paredes de Ajo, Arizona. Archivo particular graffiti dondequiera que vaya y terminé en contacto con Michael Schwartz de Tucson Arts Brigade, que organizó una charla de mi trabajo en una galería local. (Schwartz ) Me contó sobre el proyecto en Ajo y me encantó la idea, así que desde entonces participé en reuniones en línea como parte del equipo de organizadores del proyecto. Era evidente que la financiación para el proyecto era cada vez más pequeña, y aunque sabía que no podía pagarme el
viaje, tampoco quería que se gastaran una parte de la financiación del proyecto en mí. Mi única opción era crear un crowdfunding. Soy una apasionada de las actividades en las tierras fronterizas de EEUU así que esperaba que los demás vieran el valor de que participara en esto... y lo hicieron! ¿Qué mensaje político se extiende detrás de los murales durante el Ajo Happening? Creo que el arte público debe evocar
¿Qué quería transmitir con sus murales? El objetivo del proyecto era proporcionar a Ajo artistas para ocupar y decorar los edificios en un lugar tan único en el desierto de Sonora. La idea es que las obras de arte públicas estén en lugares significativos y relevantes como marco para un mayor diálogo nacional e internacional que promueva el compromiso social y unas artes basadas en la comunidad. Quería que este proyecto fuera una oportunidad para la interacción pública y la integración comunitaria y la conversación. ¿Ha sido Ajo una de tus mejores experiencias con las comunidades? Nunca he sido testigo de un sentido de la comunidad tan increíble como en Ajo Arizona. Ajo fue construido para ser autosuficiente, pero no sólo eso, fue construido para ser elegante y admirable, para que los trabajadores de la mina de cobre estuvieran orgullosos de su hogar. cobre que funcionó durante más de 70 años. La mina cerró en 1985 dejando a toda la comunidad sin esperanzas. La ciudad es un brillante ejemplo de lo que podría haber sido. Para llegar allí, condujimos durante horas a través de un desierto áspero y hostil, porque este lugar está literalmente en el medio de la nada, pero está lleno de arquitectura hispano-colonial, un hospital abandonado, una vía férrea y una preciosa plaza. La sensación de unión en Ajo es muy poderosa. Cuando la mina estaba abierta, la ciudad se dividió en tres ciudades separadas y segregadas: Ajo, Indian Village y Mexican Town, con su típico racismo institucional. La comunidad estaba dividida pero la plaza siempre era el lugar donde todos se mezclaban y disfrutaban de eventos comunitarios sin importar su origen étnico o de clase. ¿Qué aprendió de esta experiencia? Aprendí mucho, casi demasiado como para explicarlo en una entrevis-

ta. Pero hubo algunos momentos significativos que realmente me hicieron cuestionar algunas de las políticas y la moral básica de Estados Unidos en este momento. Los lugareños llevaban camisetas que decían “No guacamole para anti-inmigrantes” y celebrando todas las cosas mexicanas. Yo tuve mi propia experiencia cuando, mientras estaba ayudando a un amigo a cargar pintura y materiales en su coche, un hombre se acercó a nosotros y nos pidió educadamente por agua. Nunca he visto a nadie más agotado en mi vida. Rechazó el sorbo que mis amigos le ofrecieron porque dijo que necesitaba llevarle el agua a su hermano que estaba “muy enfermo” y nos dijo que era mexicano. Le sugerimos otras opciones para conseguir agua, nos agradeció y siguió su camino. El desierto es hostil, la vida silvestre mortal, el calor y las cadenas montañosas casi impenetrables, sin embargo, muchos hacen el viaje de México a Estados Unidos igual. Las tierras circundantes son un monumento a los que intentaron y sucumbieron a las peligrosas condiciones. Me han contado que los locales dejan tanques de agua en el desierto, en la ciudad y en lugares donde esperan que los que la necesiten la encuentren, pero se han convertido en blanco de los partidarios de Trump, que disparan y destruyen los tanques. ¿Cómo fue cruzar la frontera en la dirección opuesta a los migrantes? Me abrió mucho los ojos. A medida que conduces desde Tucson a Ajo y entras en la Nación Tohono O’odham,
cruzas el límite fronterizo de 100 millas donde el camino está bloqueado por agentes de la Fuerza Fronteriza. Estaba lista para sacar mis papeles y mi pasaporte, cuando me dijeron que no me preocupara ¡puedes pasar libremente a México, es solo a los que intentan volver a los que revisan! Al salir de Lukeville, Arizona, entramos en Sonoyta, México, a pocos metros de distancia. Mis primeros pensamientos fueron que se trataba de una fachada, como de un recinto ferial. Había chozas a lo largo del camino, vendiendo ponchos y sombreros a turistas mezcladas con puestos que vendían camuflaje y trekking a los que querían hacer el viaje... había barriles oxidados, techos de hierro corrugado, todo estaba pintado a mano. La pobreza me impactó porque esto estaba literalmente a metros de Estados Unidos. La zona era vieja, en desuso y casi como un pueblo fantasma, con unas pocas personas sentadas fuera de sus puestos, el reggaetón que se oía desde los camiones maltratados y los perros corriendo salvajes por la carretera por la que estábamos conduciendo. ¿Cómo se sintió allí? Durante la mayor parte de mi poco tiempo en México sentí una enorme sensación de privilegio - casi hasta el punto de sentirme un poco insegura, quizás un objetivo. Me sentí culpable, pero muy afortunada de poder experimentar todo lo que hice. Cada conversación que me las arreglé para tener en México fue positiva, pero la zona por la que estábamos viajando era inestable y estaba al tanto de eso. La cultura es rica y colorida y me parecía muy injusto ver que estaba financieramente abandonada. ¡Arizona fue magnífico y he hecho amistades que guardo como un verdadero tesoro! ¿Cómo cree que su trabajo puede influir en las personas que viven a ambos lados de la frontera? ¿Se sentirán menos solos o violentados? Espero que mi trabajo sea un recordatorio de unidad y esperanza. El graffiti y el arte callejero son una pasión mundial, donde las barreras internacionales son constantemente superadas e irrelevantes incluso. uizá no sea una gran película –convengamos en que no lo es – pero “Churchill” plantea una pregunta – tal vez la pregunta– que todo ciudadano estadounidense tendría que estar haciéndose en este momento: ¿Qué significa ser grande, en el sentido de “great”? Esta biografía del Primer Ministro Británico Winston S. Churchill durante la fase final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial no debe ser analizada desde su valor como documento histórico. Basta con decir que tanto desde el punto de vista político como biográfico, es decir desde lo general hasta lo particular, son más las inexactitudes que los aciertos. Así mismo, deja mucho que desear en cuanto al uso del lenguaje cinematográfico. Demasiado énfasis en lo obvio, recurrencia excesiva a una simbología maneada, desequilibrio entre sonido ambiente y escenas musicalizadas. En cierta medida, la película se presenta más como una caricatura que como un verdadero estudio de personaje. Incluso la interpretación de Brian Cox en el papel de Churchill –excéntrico, energético, cómico– contribuye a formar esta impresión. Pero es justamente gracias a esta dimensión caricaturesca, más allá de los fallos, que la pregunta sobre la grandeza queda claramente expuesta. Después de todo, la caricatura está pensada para simplificar,
exagerar, y así dejar en evidencia los rasgos más generales del animal humano. La película, dirigida por Jonathan Teplitzky de un guión de Alex von Tunzelmann, relata los preámbulos a la invasión decisiva de los aliados en 1944 en territorio Francés para liberar el país de la ocupación alemana. Con este telón de fondo, Churchill aparece como el equivalente de un rey humanista del Renacimiento opuesto al uso de una violencia que no considera necesaria. A lo largo del film, lo vemos clamar contra el ataque hasta que finalmente los resultados lo dejan en evidencia. Aunque históricamente inexacta –para 1944 Churchill había pasado a ser une de los principales proponentes de la invasión–, esta parábola política, algo torpe y probablemente malograda, ofrece el marco para una serie de preguntas más importantes: ¿Podemos equivocarnos y sin embargo aspirar a la grandeza? ¿No es la capacidad para reconocer los propios errores una de las marcas de un buen líder? ¿Hasta qué punto debemos mirar hacia el pasado para no equivocarnos en el futuro? ¿En qué momento un hombre se vuelve demasiado viejo para dejar de ser considerado el gran hombre que una vez fue? Éstas son las preguntas que hacen que una floja película como “Churchill” sea digna de ser vista. n

Su participación en la televisión le permitió el despegue de su carrera musical. “Amárrame” es el primer sencillo de su cuarto álbum La Trenza, que interpreta junto al cantante colombiano Juanes.
