E

l huracán María, igual que Irma, causó altos niveles de destrucción, más de 10 muertes y ha dejado a miles de residentes de la isla sin luz ni acceso a las comunicaciones. Eso significa que Puerto Rico ha quedado aislada del mundo, dejando a centenares de personas en el extranjero sufriendo por las vidas de sus familiares y seres queridos. En Filadelfia, los miembros de la comunidad latina se han unido para poder ofrecer toda la ayuda que sea necesaria para la población de Puerto Rico. La concejal María Quinones-Sánchez y el representante estatal Ángel Cruz han organizado la campaña Unidos PA’PR para recaudar fondos que se destinarán a ayudar a la población de la isla. Sánchez, Cruz, junto a diversos líderes sociales y organizadores anunciaron el jueves

pasado la puesta en marcha de la campaña Unidos PA’PR. El alcalde Jim Kenney también se unió a los esfuerzos y habló de la necesidad de estar preparados para poder reaccionar ante casos de emergencia de este tipo. “Nuestra atención está toda puesta en la gente de Puerto Rico”, dijo Kenney. “Pido a todos los ciudadanos de Filadelfia que contribuyan de alguna forma para ayudar”. Al fin de las festividades de la semana de Puerto Rico –incluida la Parada Puertorriqueña del pasado domingo–, los organizadores de Unidos PA’PR dedicarán los próximos días a incentivar a la comunidad latina para que ayude con donaciones monetarias o en víveres. Organizaciones como Concilio, el Consejo de Organizaciones de Habla Hispana, la Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha y Taller

Puertorriqueño, se ha comprometido en gestionar el ciento por ciento del dinero recaudado y asegurarse de que se destinará a ayudas para los afectados por los huracanes Irma y María en Puerto Rico. La concejal Quiñones-Sánchez, como buena parte de la comunidad latina, tiene familia Puerto Rico. Sanchez tuvo ocasión de establecer un breve contacto con sus seres queridos, pero muchos todavía no lo han conseguido. “Somos un pueblo resistente,” dijo en un intento por reconfortar a los que sufren por sus seres queridos en la isla. Para facilitar la recolección de dinero, la organización puertorriqueña Concilio habilitó en su página web una plataforma para recibir donaciones a través de tarjetas de crédito o PayPal. Cómo ayudar desde Filadelfia a las víctimas del terremoto en México

Una semana después del terremoto que sacudió a México y que se cobró la vida de más de 300 mexicanos, miles de damnificados se encuentran durmiendo en albergues a la espera de que las ayudas lleguen. El sismo, cuyo epicentro fue el límite entre los estados de Puebla y Morelos, también se sintió en Filadelfia. Miles de inmigrantes mexicanos residentes en el sur de la ciudad son originarios de Puebla. Teniendo en cuenta esto, y que en el sector del Italian Market ya se notan algunas iniciativas individuales de recolección de ayudas, el Consulado de México en Filadelfia hizo un llamado para tener en cuenta algunas precauciones. “Estamos impulsando que la gente done a través de medios institucionales como la Cruz

Roja Mexicana, que tiene página web segura y sencilla por la medio de la cual se pueden realizar donaciones con tarjeta o PayPal”, informó Carlos Torres, cónsul de Prensa y Promoción. Además de la Cruz Roja, también se puede donar dinero en las páginas web de los Topos y la Unicef México. “No es que el país no tenga víveres o recursos, en México lo que se necesita es dinero para ayudar a agilizar las labores humanitarias”, recalcó el funcionario del consulado mexicano. Torres también recordó que las puertas del Consulado están abiertas para quienes necesiten ayuda para ubicar a algún familiar en México. na semanada después de que el huracán María terminara de hundir a Puerto Rico en la mayor crisis de su historia, tanto en términos económicos como humanitarios, las imágenes del devastador paso del ciclón por la Isla del Encanto muestran un panorama de “desastre mayor”, como lo calificó el pasado domingo el gobernador Ricardo Roselló. Las preguntas que quedan en el aire son: ¿cuánto dinero se necesitará para emprender las obras de recuperación de la infraestructura? ¿Cuánto tiempo pasará para que Puerto Rico recupere su esplendor? ¿Es esta la oportunidad para que el Congreso de Estados Unidos apruebe un paquete de salvación económica que incluya la reconstrucción de la destruido? Según las autoridades de la isla, los daños materiales son incalculables y podrían superar los miles de millones de dólares. Con la totalidad de Puerto Rico a oscuras, el 75 por ciento de las viviendas sin agua potable, y varias zonas del país incomunicadas, lo cierto es que hoy más que nunca la isla y sus habitantes necesitan la ayuda de Estados Unidos para mirar hacia el futuro.

Jr, also known as “Romy” has been gracefully piling on different hats and growing into the facets of his identity for over forty years. estacado en la portada de The Washington Post, con un puesto en la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos, educado como un católico apostólico romano en medio del Cinturón Bíblico de Texas… Rómulo Díaz L. Jr, más conocido como “Romy”, ha ido apilando distintos roles y modelando diversas facetas de su identidad durante más de 40 años. A primera vista, no se lo imaginaría: su voz texana, su risa contagiosa, una sonrisa cálida y su humilde disposición no suelen asociarse automáticamente a un hombre de logros verdaderamente extraordinarios a pesar de las circunstancias: un hombre que sirvió como procu-

rador de nuestra ciudad, un hombre designado personalmente por el presidente Bill Clinton, un hombre que ha hecho avances significativos en la eficiencia energética por ser el vicepresidente y consejero general de PECO, o un hombre que lloró al hablar de la beca que creó en honor a su madre mexicana, Irene Rivera Díaz. Y a pesar de todos sus títulos y diplomas, Romy no es un hombre ostentoso. Su capacidad para mantener una actitud afable más allá de sus éxitos en sectores que van del medio ambiente al derecho, la política, la reforma y la justicia social, es lo que lo convierte en el mentor que la población de Filadelfia (particularmente nuestros jóvenes LGBT y los latinos más ambiciosos) se merece: “un mentor que puede enseñar a la gente a no cometer los mismos errores que yo”, como él lo dice. Hasta hoy en día, la vida de ‘Romy’ ha completado un círculo que ha cruzado fronteras a nivel estatal y nacional. Su historia comienza en esta ciudad cuando su padre emigró de Venezuela durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial

PORTADA y fue reclutado por Gulf Oil para trabajar en los convoyes de petróleo que cruzaban el Atlántico, desde la refinería de Filadelfia hasta Port Arthur, en Texas. El destino se encargó de que un día el padre de ‘Romy’ se detuviera en el restaurante donde la madre de ‘Romy’ trabajaba al salir de la escuela, bien detrás de la caja registradora o ayudando a su abuela a mantener el negocio. Ese “lindo encuentro” terminó en un matrimonio que tuvo cuatro hijos: ‘Romy’, Hannah, David y Jerry. Su infancia y adolescencia en un pequeño pueblo del Este de Texas tuvieron sus altibajos. Profesionalmente, era el lugar ideal para que alguien interesado en la energía pudiera desarrollar su curiosidad y aumentar el conocimiento general. Estar rodeado de refinerías de petróleo, industrias petroquímicas y reservas de gas hizo que toda su atención se volcase en el ambientalismo y la eficiencia natural. Romy atribuye además el desarrollo de su enriquecimiento profesional y académico a su condición de inmigrante de primera generación, que él afirma que le ha dado una personalidad de Tipo A y algunas de las herramientas para el éxito:

“Creo que cuando perteneces a la primera generación, y no tienes mucho dinero o te faltan recursos para pagar tu acceso a la universidad, tienes que encontrar una manera de conseguirlo. Sabía que tenía que obtener buenas calificaciones para poder entrar en una buena escuela, y mis padres y hermanos me dieron mucho apoyo. Aprendí a trabajar duro, y tuve la suerte de obtener una beca del sindicato de mi papá para poder entrar en la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Pero, sabe, [risas] cuando llegué ni siquiera sabía cómo registrarme para las clases. No sabía a quién acudir. Tenía buenos instintos, pero no sabía realmente las oportunidades que me aguardaban”. Parece que ‘Romy’ supo aprovechar bien las oportunidades, a pesar de haber permanecido en Texas hasta después de terminar sus estudios universitarios y recibir su doctorado Juris en UT. Como católico apostólico romano, ‘Romy’ todavía se sentía más alejado de la norma, ya que en el cerrado ambiente del Este de Texas, el llamado “Cinturón Bíblico”, sus hermanos y él estaban solos antes una mayoría fundamentalmente protestante. “No parezco ni actúo como lo que la mayoría de la gente asume que la persona que soy debería ser... Aparecer en la portada de The Washington Post en 1993 -en el punto más alto de la epidemia de SIDA y de la expansión de la homofobia- fue uno de esos desafíos. Aunque su familia y sus mejores amigos ya estaban al corriente de su sexualidad, ‘Romy’ se marchó de Port Arthur para trabajar como consejero y jefe de gabinete de la Secretaría de Energía de los EEUU sin pensar (en ese momento) que esa particularidad de su persona estaba integrada a su vida profesional. Así que lo mantuvo en secreto. Hasta que una mañana, sentado en la parte trasera de un taxi de camino al trabajo, leyó entre líneas el siguiente titular: Miembros de Alto Rango de la Administración Clinton salen del closet. ¿Su reacción inicial? “¡Oh! ¡Me pregunté quiénes serían! [risas]. Y, cuando comencé a leer la historia, vi que mi nombre era el primero en la lista. ¡El primero! [se ríe más fuerte]. Supongo que me quedé en una especie de shock. Sin embargo, una vez terminé de procesar lo sucedido y tragarme el sentimiento de humillación pública, me di cuenta de que la gente necesita hablar con otra gente con la que pueda relacionarse y sentirse valorada. Y me di cuenta, de una manera extraña, que tenía por delante una tremenda oportunidad para ayudar a los demás; de ser un representante... Quería demostrar que si usted es una persona decente, colaborativa y le importa el pueblo americano, ¿qué diferencia hay si es moreno o rubio, homosexual o heterosexual?”. Estas oportunidades, formadas gracias a su experiencia, diligencia y aptitud un ser más empático con las diferencias entre las personas, y le dieron la posibilidad de tener una perspectiva única cuando se trata de temas que afectan a la toma de decisiones en el gobierno nacional y local. Estar “comprometido a servir a todo el mundo”, por ejemplo, le hizo ver el derrame de petróleo de Deepwater Horizon en el Golfo de

México como un fiasco que tendría un alto impacto ambiental y social en la región. También hizo que ‘Romy’ quisiera comprometerse cívicamente -en especial con la juventud- iniciando así una larga serie de desayunos de mentoría a través de PECO y la Asociación Panamericana de Filadelfia, donde se reúne con jóvenes LGBT y latinos de alto talento para charlar e impartir lecciones de vida. Su implicación en la educación del liderazgo ha sido reconocida recientemente con el Premio Lavender y un premio del Community College de Filadelfia. “Estoy muy orgulloso de los sacrificios que hicieron mis padres, ya saben, los sacrificios que los padres de gente como nosotros, los inmigrantes, han hecho me han ayudado a llegar donde estoy. En definitiva, quiero servir de ayuda ofreciendo apoyo educativo a los estadounidenses más desfavorecidos. Creo que ese será mi próximo paso, eso es lo que quiero hacer cuando sea mayor”, dice con una de sus sonrisas. ¿El consejo principal de ‘Romy’? Confiar, defenderse a sí mismo y estar dispuesto a ensuciarse las manos en el proceso. Estas tres condiciones son básicas para que las minorías tengan éxito y continúen haciendo valiosas contribuciones a nuestro país. Especial para AL DÍA News Sabía usted que varios de los primeros europeos que vivieron en el área que se convirtió más tarde en Filadelfia hablaban español? Algunos de sus apellidos eran Lucena, Dandrade, Coen y Mesa. Eran judíos sefardíes que huían de la Inquisición española. Aunque actualmente los judíos sefarditas son una minoría dentro de la comunidad judía de Filadelfia, fueron cruciales para el éxito de la Guerra de la Independencia y la fundación de los Estados Unidos. Los descendientes de esos judíos sefardíes todavía viven hoy aquí. Rosh Hashaná, el Año Nuevo judío, empieza en el atardecer del 20 de septiembre. Y para los habitantes de origen Hispano de Filadelfia, el idioma y la comida de

esta popular celebración Sefardí les resultará muy familiar. Sefarad es el nombre bíblico de un lugar mencionado en el Antiguo Testamento (Abdías 1:20). Desde la época del Imperio Romano, en el siglo II, los judíos han identificado a Sefarad como Hispania, o la Península Ibérica. Sefarad es el nombre hebreo moderno para España. “Sefardí” significa “de Sefarad”, por lo que los judíos descendientes de las familias judías de la Península Ibérica son llamados “judíos sefardíes.”

CONVERSOS A LA FUERZA

La historia de los judíos en las Américas comienza con el Decreto de la Alhambra, en 1492. Este edicto ordenó la expulsión de los judíos de los reinos de Castilla y Aragón. Los judíos tenían hasta el 31 de julio para partir, y hasta el 2 de agosto para convertirse al catolicismo. Aquellos que no se marcharan o se convirtiesen serían asesinados. Los judíos que se convirtieron al catolicismo son los llamados “conversos.”

El Decreto de la Alhambra fue emitido durante la llamada Era de las Exploraciones. El príncipe Enrique de Portugal inició este período en 1418 cuando buscaba rutas alternativas para llegar a las Indias. Sus barcos exploraron la costa atlántica de África y descubrieron una ruta hacia el Océano Índico. Y como la reina Isabel y el rey Fernando de Castilla y Aragón no estaban dispuestos a ceder a Portugal el lucrativo comercio con Oriente, decidieron apoyar a Cristóbal Colón en su empeño por descubrir un pasaje occidental hacia la India.

A LAS ÓRDENES DE COLÓN

Tal vez por coincidencia, Cristóbal Colón emprendió sus viajes en 1492, el mismo año en que se emitió el Decreto de la Alhambra. Sus financieros eran dos conversos, Louis De Santangel y Gabriel Sánchez, y el rabino Isaac Abarbanel, gerente financiero de la reina Isabel. Algunos académicos teorizan que Colón esperaba encontrar refugio seguro para los judíos que escapaban de la Inquisición española. Muchas de las personas a bordo de sus barcos eran conversos forzados, como Marco, su cirujano, Maestre Bernal, su médico, y Luis de Torres, su intérprete. Un análisis de su correspondencia ha llevado a algunos eruditos a concluir que Cristóbal Colón fue también un converso. En cuanto terminó el período que permitió a los

CULTURA judíos que permanecieron en Castilla y Aragón convertirse, decidieron zarpar. Los barcos partieron el 3 de agosto de 1492 y tocaron tierra en las Bahamas el 12 de octubre de 1492. Muchos judíos sefardíes que salieron de España como resultado del Decreto de la Alhambra emigraron a los Países Bajos, Francia, Italia e Inglaterra. Se unieron a expediciones a América como colonos o comerciantes para sus nuevos países.

DE BRASIL A LA COSTA ESTE

Uno de los primeros lugares en que se establecieron estos judíos fue Nueva Holanda, los territorios en Brasil gobernados por los holandeses. Fundaron una comunidad en Recife, en el estado Nor-Oriental de Pernambuco. Construyeron la primera sinagoga de América allí en 1646, y la llamaron Kahal Zur Israel. En 1654 los portugueses conquistaron Brasil a los holandeses, y trajeron consigo la Inquisición española. Los holandeses se habían asentado pre-

viamente en Nueva Amsterdam en el extremo sur de la isla de Manhattan. Parte de la comunidad judía de Recife huyó a América del Norte, a la sede del gobierno colonial de Nueva Holanda. Peter Stuyvesant, su líder, trató de impedir que los judíos de Recife se establecieran allí. Los directores de la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Occidentales en Amsterdam, que financió la colonia, le enviaron una carta informándole que los judíos eran ciudadanos holandeses y que se quedarían. En 1656, Abraham de Lucena, Salvator Dandrade y Jacob Coen fueron los primeros judíos que viajaron desde Nueva Amsterdam a comerciar con los americanos nativos y los suecos a lo largo del río Delaware. Una pequeña comunidad fue creciendo lentamente allí, y los judíos ya estaban presentes cuando a William Penn se le dio posesión de la tierra que se convirtió en Filadelfia en 1681. La comunidad judía de Filadelfia se expandió con la afluencia de judíos españoles y portugueses de Inglaterra, Holanda y las Antillas. La tierra para levantar el primer cementerio judío fue

El judío más famoso en trasladarse de Nueva York a Filadelfia fue Haym Salomon, un sefardí cuya familia había abandonado España y Portugal en 1492 para escapar de la Inquisición española. Vivió en Polonia y Europa Occidental, fue educado en hebreo y hablaba alemán con fluidez, así como varios otros idiomas. En 1795 emigró a Nueva York y fundó un negocio de corretaje para atender a los comerciantes internacionales. Haym Salomon creía en la Independencia americana y se unió a los Hijos de la Libertad, una sociedad secreta creada para proteger los derechos de los colonos. Ellos acuñaron el lema “Impuestos sin representación”. Fue detenido por las fuerzas británicas y obligado a trabajar para el ejército británico como traductor de las tropas mercenarias de Hesse. Aprovechó esta oportunidad para ayudar a los prisioneros del ejército británico a huir de sus captores. Salomon también persuadió a algunas tropas de Hesse a abandonar a los británicos. En 1778, Haym Salomon escapó a Filadelfia. Reabrió su negocio de corretaje y recaudó dinero para reforzar las operaciones de guerra de George Washington. Él personalmente pagó para que James Madison y James Wilson puedan participar en el Congreso Continental. Cuando terminó la guerra, ayudó a varios héroes de la revolución americana a reiniciar sus negocios.

Haym Salomon nunca fue reembolsado por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos por su generosidad y falleció a los 44 años en bancarrota, dejando atrás a su joven familia.

REFRANES Y PASTELES

La comunidad judía de Filadelfia siguió creciendo, absorbiendo aproximadamente 200.00 judíos de Europa del Este a finales del siglo XIX. Los descendientes de los judíos sefardíes, que en ese momento ya eran minoría, seguían hablando español medieval y portugués en casa y con los de su comunidad. Algunos refranes todavía en uso serán fácilmente comprensibles para los modernos hispanohablantes. Por ejemplo, “Amostrate como amigo en la ora mala”. Otro consejo popular es: “Antes de que te cases, mira lo que ases”. Aunque hoy ya no se habla en los hogares sefardíes, el español medieval sigue siendo la lengua de elección para proverbios, refranes y canciones. Los judíos sefardíes trajeron con ellos al Nuevo Mundo sus almendras, granadas, aceite de oliva, garbanzos, lentejas, dátiles, uvas y habas. También trajeron sus recetas familiares. Una especialidad del Rosh Hashanah es un pastel de carne llamado pasteliko. Se hace con corteza de trigo y un relleno de carne molida de res o cordero. El pasteliko es horneado hasta que se vuelve dorado. Los pastelikos son la versión judía de las empanadas que se originaron en Galicia, y que aún hoy se comen en España. Muchas iteraciones de esta empanada se han extendido por toda América Latina. Al final de la cena festiva de Rosh Hashaná, los judíos sefardíes se desean el uno al otro “Anyada Buena, Dulse I Alegre!” “¡Feliz, dulce y buen año nuevo!”

desconocidos. Ayuda, por supuesto, que Man se declare un admirador de sus textos. Una pequeña caricia al ego masculino siempre abre puertas. A partir de este momento, la historia se torna incluso más extraña. Bizarra, es quizá la palabra. Lo que empieza con registro absurdo, pero realista, se convierte en algo que deliberadamente transgrede las fronteras de lo racional. Aunque, para ser honestos, hay que decir que el director, Aronofsky, ofrece pistas de este cambio desde temprano. El personaje de Lawrence reposa su mano en un muro y el zoom de la cámara nos permite algo que parece un corazón agonizante. Las metáforas surreales se siguen acumulando para, en definitiva, conducir a un clímax perturbador y alucinante. Una nueva marca en la carrera de Aronosky, que ya dio muestra de su debilidad por los desenlaces angustiantes en “El Luchador” y, sobre todo, en “Requiem por un Sueño”. Hay que decir que “Mother” está lejos del cine de horror tradicional, aunque en algún momento parezca inscribirse en la línea de “Rosemary’s Baby”. other!” es una película aparentemente simple en términos de producción, pues se desarrolla en su totalidad en el interior de una remota casa que acaba de arder en un incendio. En ella viven dos personas que intentan reparar juntos la casa: Him (“Él”, interpretado por Javier Bardem), un escritor con un pasado exitoso, que ha perdido las ganas de escribir, y Mother (“Madre”, Jennifer Lawrence), que es quien toma todas las decisiones, como el color que deben pintarse las paredes.
