athalie Rayes, CEO and president of Latino Victory, recently spoke with AL DÍA and gave her analysis on the political implications of the 2020 census. How do all the numbers that have been revealed affect 63 million Hispanics? The political decisions that are taken from now on may end up bridging the gap and ending the bias that still remains in society when talking about Hispanics, because if one thing is clear, it is that they are no longer a minority. While the primary function of the census is to compute new population projections, it also serves to aid in the redistribution of resources and redistricting the federal and state electoral district lines. “Every ten years our political map changes and brings new opportunities, as well as disadvantages for minority communities. One advantage is that these maps allow communities to be adequately represented in the federal Congress and in many state legislatures. Right now the state legislatures are creating their new congressional and state maps and that will impact the 2022 elections. If each community has the representation it deserves, the decisions made at those levels will be better informed and more equitable,” explained Rayes. Additionally, “Latinos, especially women, are running for electoral seats at the local and federal level. This is creating an increasingly large network of talent with candidates who know the community in depth because they are part of it. This will allow our community to have the adequate representation that we deserve within a decade or two,” said the president of Latino Victory. For Rayes and other analysts, the most surprising data of the last census is the decreasing number of people who identify themselves as white only, not only within the general population but also among Hispanics, which went from 53% in 2010 to approximately 20% in 2020. “That speaks about the multiculturalism of our country and how Latinos are increasing and the diversity within the Latino community itself,” she concluded.

oseph Dominguez, the CEO of Commonwealth Edison Co. (ComEd), has been promoted to CEO of Exelon Generation and incoming CEO of the competitive energy business, which will be called Constellation. “Constellation will be the largest producer of clean energy in the nation by a wide margin, giving our expansive customer-facing platform a competitive edge as consumers and policymakers increasingly demand sustainable energy solutions,” Dominguez said in a press release. “I’m excited about the opportunity to lead such a talented workforce as we seek new opportunities to help our customers and communities reduce pollution and power a next-generation energy grid,” he added. The announcement of Dominguez’s new role coincides with Exelon Corporation’s planned separation of its companies. In Feb. 2021, the corporation announced its plans to split into two publicly traded companies, one for its regulated electric and gas utilities and the other for its unregulated power generation and customer-facing energy. The separation is being done to give each company the financial and strategic independence to focus on its unique customer needs, while remaining focused on its core business strategy. “The two companies will be leaders in their respective industries and will have the resources necessary to best serve their respective customers and sustain long-term investment and operating excellence,” said Chris Crane, Exelon Corp. President and CEO. “As an independent company, Exelon will lead the way toward a brighter and cleaner energy future for our more than 10 million electric and gas customers, while continuing to invest in critical infrastructure, expand economic opportunity and promote equity in all the communities we serve.” The process of the separation is on track to closing during the first quarter of 2022, pending the completion of the remaining regulatory approvals. This new role as CEO of Exelon Generation and Constellation marks the latest for Dominguez during his nearly two-decades with the company in a number of different roles. His long tenure with the company is proof of his value and leadership as a corporate professional. Since he took over his most recent role as CEO of ComEd in 2018, Dominguez has overseen the

THE EUROPEAN UNION

The EU was already preparing an effort to end firms acting as tax shields. The Pandora Papers have provided the European Commission with arguments to speed up the process. The Chilean opposition has presented a motion to remove President Sebastián Piñera for his appearance in the Pandora Papers. The leak reveals that he used a shell company in the British Virgin Islands to buy the Dominga mining project he sold in 2010, when he was already president.

People’s Day, making him the first U.S. president to do so. In the proclamation, he recognized the contributions Indigenous peoples have made in public service, entrepreneurship, scholarships, the arts and countless other industries. “Today, we acknowledge the significant sacrifices made by Native peoples to this country — and recognize their many ongoing contributions to our Nation,” the proclamation read. Biden also marked a change of course from previous administrations by acknowledging the death and destruction of Native American communities after Christopher Columbus journeyed to North America in 1492. “It is a measure of our greatness as a Nation that we do not seek to bury these shameful episodes of our past — that we face them honestly, we bring them to the light, and we do all we can to address them,” Biden wrote. More than 100 cities, including Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix and Seattle, along with a number of states, including Minnesota, Vermont and Oregon, have replaced the celebration of Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day, deciding instead to recognize the Native Americans that were impacted by genocide after Columbus and other European explorers reached the continent.

“IN FRONT OF BIDEN’S PLAN, SOME AMERICANS DON’T WANT TO 'BE DENMARK'” “Should the United States be like Europe? In the next few weeks, Joe Biden will stake his presidency on this issue. At 78, he has the ambition to go down in history as one of the great reformers of his country. He wants to follow the tradition of two of his Democratic predecessors who changed America’s profile, Franklin Roosevelt (1933-1945) and Lyndon Johnson (1963-1969). (…) “The battle is going to be tough, on two levels: political and ideological. Because what is at stake is an idea of America, something profound that goes far beyond a dispute over the level of the country’s public debt (…) or the macroeconomic relevance of Biden’s program. “Between now and October 31, Congress must definitely vote on two major projects (…). The first (…) modernize infrastructures in poor condition: bridges, ports, roads and airports. (…) “The second (...): a considerable strengthening of the welfare state and the fight against global warming.” Comment by Alain Frachon, published on October 13. “¿Debe Estados Unidos ser como Europa? She provided internal documents demonstrating the cynicism with which the great digital oligarchy manipulates algorithms to put the good of the company before the good of its 2.7 billion customers. (…) “It was a repetition, but with more credibility than ever, of what many academics, experts in digital technology and some politicians have been saying for a long time, the few who take the trouble to see that social networks like Facebook represent such a great threat for general well-being such as coronavirus or climate change. (…) As Joseph Biden has said, the companies that run social networks ‘are killing people’ through the lies they publish about covid vaccines. And, the president of the United States could have added, about the role they have played in fomenting the cold civil war in which his very polarized country finds itself - his, Argentina and many more ”. Commentary by John Carlin, posted October 9. “(…) It never has been. At its origin is the fruit of migrations and today, 245 years after its founding, it continues to be and evolves thanks to migrations. Hispanics, Latinos, Latinx, we all come from different places and our origins are so rooted in the culture of the continent that it is impossible to deny they are also rooted in North America. The 2020 census, of which we don't know all the data yet, is the best evidence to date of what was already sensed. The United States of the 21st century is a melting pot of cultures, not only European or African, but also Latin American and Asian from all latitudes. And among these, the weight of Hispanic culture is increasingly evident and irreversible. The figures revealed by the census are overwhelming. Of 331 million Americans, 63.7 million consider themselves Hispanic. One in four Americans consider themselves Hispanic or Asian. In other words, more than 25% of the population identifies their origin outside the United States. In addition, the Hispanic population increased in the last decade by 23%, only surpassed by Asians, who increased by 41%. The Latino influence has even reached places as "white" as the Dakotas. In North Dakota the Hispanic population increased 148% between 2010 and 2020, while in South Dakota, it increased 75%. Latinos represent 39% of the population in California and Texas, and 26% in Florida — a trend that continues in the South of the country and has remained stable since the Hispanic population in the country began to be counted in 1980. But what about the Hispanic population in other regions of the country? The census data is thorough and divided by regions, states, counties, and curious enough can even know the origin of Hispanics in each of the regions. In this way, we know, for example, that in Philadelphia, 15.6% of the population is Hispanic. The majority are Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, but in the last two decades, the number of Mexicans and Central Americans has increased.

The same phenomenon in Philadelphia is repeated throughout the Northeast. In the South, the majority of Latinos identify as of Mexican or Cuban origin — such as in Florida. In the North, the trends are more for the Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. However, Mexicans still represent the vast majority of Hispanics in the country, as 37.2 million Hispanics identify as Mexican. According to Jeffrey Passel, senior demographer at the Pew Research Center, one of the most important findings of this latest census is precisely the mobility of Hispanics from the South to the North of the country and their growth in “white” states.

Hispanic, Latino, Latinx are the expressions used to talk about immigrants who come from the countries of Central and South America and from Spain. Brazil was excluded from this category of the census, because despite being Latino, their language is not Spanish. In 1976, Congress passed a law that allowed the origin of Hispanics to be questioned in a category other than race on the census. In fact, it is the only law that mandates the collection and analysis of data on a specific ethnic group, apart from the category of race. Thus, in the 1980 census, the specific question about Hispanic origin began to be asked. Even before this mandate, the government has tried to measure the Hispanic population in the country through surveys on the country of origin of people, using surnames, the languages they spoke and more as guides. The question has changed little in the past 40 years, and although during the administration of President Barack Obama, the Census Bureau suggested joining the two questions about the ethnic origin of Hispanics and race, the Trump administration, which was in charge of the design and preparation of the 2020 census, did not follow through. However, a change was made to the race question. In 2020, people who identified as white or Black were able to write a description about their origin. This,

PORTADA among other things, caused people who identify as Hispanic within the racial categories to change substantially. That is, they were no longer only Hispanic, but white-Hispanic, Black-Hispanic, or even multiracial. According to Passel, “the format of the question on race, which allowed and, I would say, even encouraged people to give specific answers within racial categories”, was the cause of the most significant phenomenon in the 2020 census data: 33.8 million people recognized themselves as belonging to more than one race, an increase of more than three times, as 9 million did so in 2010, and only 6.8 million considered themselves of more than one race in 2,000, the first year in which this question was asked. Among Hispanics, there was also a significant increase, as more than 20 million identified with more than one race in the 2020 census, representing an increase of 17 million in 10 years. What does it mean for Americans to identify as multiracial? What does it mean in particular for Hispanics? Between 2010 and 2019, 9.3 million Hispanic babies were born in the United States, a similar number to the total in the 2000s. By comparison, 3.5 million Hispanic immigrants came to the country between 2010 and 2019, substantially fewer than the 6.5 million that arrived at the beginning of the millennium. The fact that there are more Hispanic babies born in the country, many of these in multiracial families compared to new immigrants, demonstrates social mobility, as more and more people of different races and ethnicities marry each other,

have children who inherit diverse origins, and these children identify with all their ancestors. This phenomenon also responds to the passage of time. Multiracial babies of two or three decades ago are now young adults and have broader views of their origins. The multiraciality in second or third generation immigrants, which is what is being seen this decade compared to previous censuses, also implies a change in the vision of what it is to be white or multiracial, and how the youngest assume with more naturalness, and even pride, various origins. Stanford University sociologist Tomás Jiménez told NPR that "older people who grew up in the mid-20th century were taught that Hispanics were white and that there could be a benefit in claiming their whiteness," in contrast , “U.S.-born people now responding to the census have been educated in a time of national anti-immigrant and anti-Latino politics. They are ticking the census boxes with a different sensitivity. " But being multiracial cuts across other aspects of culture as well. In the last fifty years, for example, Latin music has influenced the culture and the Latin market, from salsa and Latin jazz in New York, pop figures such as Jennifer Lopez or Shakira, Mexican regional so popular in Chicano culture, and reggaeton of the last decade. All these rhythms have brought Latino culture closer to American society. And while generations listen to music in Spanish and Spanglish, more Hispanics speak English — in 2019, 39.8 million were fluent in English, according to

the Pew Research Center. But also, 42.5 million people speak Spanish as natives, 14.9 million have limited language proficiency and 7.8 million are studying Spanish, according to data from the Hispanic Council.

HISPANICS, GENERATORS OF WEALTH

It also doesn’t end there. These generations of Hispanics are taking the lead in new business creation and the job market. Latino startups far exceed those created in recent years by whites. Latinos are the group that has created the most companies in the last 10 years: 34% compared to 1% of general growth, and contribute $2.7 trillion of GDP to the economy of the country. That alone would be

the eighth largest economy in the world. As Janet Murguía, president and CEO of UnidosUS says, "the good news is that most Americans recognize the importance of Latinos and Latinas to our economy and appreciate our work ethic and values. The bad news is that the majority of Americans also believe in widely inaccurate and negative myths and stereotypes -perpetuated by the news and social media -about our size and immigration status that are preventing our country from making the investments and enacting policies that will benefit both our community and our nation." The path is outlined and the projections are positive. Being multiracial is no longer a dream, it is a reality in which the Latino community has such an important place that it cannot be hidden.

During the administration of President Barack Obama, the Census Bureau suggested joining the two questions about the ethnic origin of Hipanos and that of race, but the Trump administration, which was in charge of the design and preparation of the 2020 census, did not make it happen.

P

odcaster Sam Sanders took a recent look at popular music’s ‘Latin explosion,’ as first observed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The conversation took place on Sanders’ NPR podcast, It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders. The latest episode, “1999’s ‘Latin Explosion’ chased crossover hits. Today, Latino artists don’t need them,” is the third episode of a three-part series on crossovers in pop music. The episode was co-hosted by NPR’s Andrea Gutierrez. Sanders views the episode as a “case study” of a crossover event that perhaps didn’t need to be, and the state of crossover in general today, as genrelines become increasingly blurred. This ‘90s ‘Latin explosion’ is described as a significant uptick in Latin artists on Western radio airtime, beginning with the international success of Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” Following Martin’s electric performance of “La Copa De La Vida” at the 1999 Grammy Awards — garnering the

artist Western attention — record producers searched for the next Latin hit. This led to the creation of Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” a song often cited as a major building block for the ‘90s Latin explosion.

THE 1990S ‘LATIN EXPLOSION’

While cultural intersection is a celebrated and more natural commonplace today, the particular ‘Latin explosion’ in question was heavily rooted in marketing efforts. Sanders was particularly critical of said early efforts. “There were these artists trying to make a thing that, I think, executives thought was wanted, but perhaps wasn’t needed. So you end up with artists like Shakira dying her hair blonde and being forced to sing in English, in a way that we kinda nodded our heads to and danced to back then, but now it feels clunky,” he said. Twenty years later, artists of Latin descent reach audiences worldwide through self-made culture, projected with the help of online platforms.

OCTOBER 20 - 27, 2021

I wondered: who is this for? Me preguntaba: ¿a quién se dirige esto? Andrea Gutierrez ENGLISH “There was this assumption that dumb Americans, like me, couldn’t enjoy a song unless it was in English,” said Sanders. “We see now, in the last several years, that’s not the case, and it was probably never the case.”

TIMING AND A ‘BOTTOM LINE’

Gutierrez shared her belief that it all came down to timing, and that as the Western world was adjusting to an influx of Latino populations, the music industry was attempting to do the same. “You have this growing power… a population you can market to, but it’s also coming at the end of what the music industry was like at that time. There were massive conglomerates taking over, but it was also right before everything went digital,” she continued The switch to digital derailed the growing mainstream attempt at a Latin explosion, just as digital options would continue to derail and alter the norm of media consumption for years to come. A high school student at the time “Livin’ La Vida Loca” was released, Gutierrez perceived the ‘Latin explosion’ as embarrassing, and a forced media blitz. “Even that phrase ‘Latin explosion.’ I couldn’t shake the feeling of being marketed to,” said Gutierrez in the episode. “Like someone had captured lightning in a bottle, but that bottle was market-tested and focus-grouped to death. And I wondered: who is this for?” The ‘Latin explosion’ was influenced by mainstream music’s “bottom line”: a focus on maximizing consumer interest in a product, but radio gatekeeping, and designated power bestowed upon record labels, has since disappeared. One major contributor to the Latin explosion’s underlying flaws is that Latino people come from varied backgrounds, have different experiences and different wants and needs. “All I need is my smartphone to find whatever I need, whatever I want… I don’t need any executive to tell me what I want,” said Sanders. OCTOBER 20 - 27, 2021

The couple kept the news a secret for a long time and created a whole campaign on social media around the track, with short, eye-catching videos using the song’s chorus. “Hello, we are Camilo and Evaluna. And in October there’s new music,” the two wrote on their Instagram accounts next to a video where they appear testing different music equipment.

Good things take time sometimes, I had to wait nine months for you”). At the end of the verse, the screen shows Camilo giving her a kiss on the belly, followed by several real time reactions from family members when they got the news. “Glory to God. TRIBUUU ARE GOING TO BE TIIIOOOOOSSS. The most beautiful news in the world. And joy is never complete until you share it with the people you love! With you. With LA TRIBU,” the singer wrote in the video’s comment section on YouTube. “Índigo” was written by Camilo and his collaborator Édgar Barrera. T

he housing market has seen a significant boom over the past 18 months, since the start of the pandemic. With record low interest rates and desires for living arrangements with more space, homeowners and first-time home buyers have searched feverishly to acquire the house of their dreams. As a result of this reality, prices for homes have seen a spike. In correlation, homeowners looking to stay put into their current homes have a unique opportunity to maximize their investment. These are some options for homeowners to cash in on their home’s rising value. • Cash Out Refinance - replacing your current mortgage with a larger one, at a lower interest rate • Traditional Refinance - reducing your monthly payment and overall cost of your home in the long run • No-Closing-Cost Refinance having up-front fees to cover expenses worked into a new mortgage • Tap Into Your Home Equity Options - providing predictable, fixed payments to achieve financial goals Homeowners who already have a great interest rate, but have equity in their home and want to make home improvements, remodel or use the money for other uses, can use a home equity loan or home equity line of credit as valuable resources. For homeowners who are feeling left out due to being unable to find a new home within their price range, or being

ENGLISH outbid multiple times despite the ability to sell their current home for well above its previous value, refinancing their current home is a great option. Here are a few reasons why: • Rates Are Still Very Low - a lower rate and monthly payment can boost your savings to the point where you can be ready for when the market eventually settles. A recent elimination of a refinance fee charged by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, made effective August 1, may enable you to get a much better rate than what you are currently paying. • You Can Refinance to Renovate - a mortgage refinance can free up cash to receive a lump sum for a renovation that meets your current living needs. A trusted mortgage advisor can help you look at different options that may work best for you. For major renovation projects, a Home Equity Line of Credit or Home Equity Loan can be valuable. • You Might Be Better Off Pocketing Your Extra Cash For Now with the combination of low rates, low inventory and bidding wars driving sale prices through the roof, holding onto your extra cash allows the ability to refinance your current home and start adding to those reserves for later. All of these options will allow homeowners and potential homebuyers to financially position themselves favorably to compete for homes when inventory levels start rising again.

he Carnaval de Oruro in Oruro, Bolivia, is one of the longest-running Inidgenous festival celebrations in South America, officially beginning in the 18th century. Native ceremonies were banned by the Spanish crown in the 17th century, but Uru communities in present-day Bolivia and Peru still celebrated by masking the Indigenous icons with Catholic rituals. Today, the main attraction to the festival in Oruro are the Diabladas, which are a famous dance troupe in Bolivia that draw festival goers from all over the world. With the actual festival still canceled due to COVID-19 in 2021, the Diabladas kept the show going.

The Diablada, according to mythology, was born from the mining pits that are the realms of the devil and in each carnival the battle is fought between good, represented by the archangel Michael, and evil, by dozens of devils and she-devils.

GOODBYE COLUMBUS FOR GOOD? From pag. 10 |

in Quito, Ecuador, where Indigenous leaders from across the Americas proclaimed the 500 years anniversary of Columbus’ voyage in 1492 as the year to kick off the liberation fight. In the present, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Oct. 8 that the announcement of a federal Indigenous Peoples Day didn’t mean an official end to Columbus Day. For now, both holidays would be celebrated.

A HISTORY OF CONFLICT

In the long run, however, recognizing such polar opposite occasions is bound to bring conflict as it has in the past. On the 500-year anniversary of Columbus’ voyage in 1992, there was a planned demonstration to be held in the San Francisco Bay area with replica ships sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge. In response, the local Indian Alliance in the Bay Area called the formation of the ‘Resistance 500’ Task Force

to flip the script on the glamor painted about Columbus’ voyage — recognizing his ‘discovery’ of the New World, but also addressing the very real history of genocide that followed. That same year, Berkeley, California enacted and carried out the first edition of Indigenous Peoples Day in the form of a ‘Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People,’ on Oct. 12. In 2021, places like New York City and Philadelphia recognized both days sideby-side. The former lit up the tops of the Empire State Building and One Vanderbilt with the colors of the Italian flag, and the latter held an Italian festival in front of a boxed-up Columbus statue at Marconi Plaza and elsewhere in South Philly. The statue became a focal point during 2020’s George Floyd protests, and the city responded by ordering it removed, only to have a judge shoot the removal down. The court battle now is over if the box can stay over the statue of the polarizing historical figure.

There is increasing resistance to the permanence of monuments that evoke the conquest and colonization in America.

he statue of Christopher Columbus remained covered by a wooden structure during Columbus Day celebrations in Philadelphia. The monument, located in Marconi Plaza, has remained that way since last summer when, during protests over the assassination of George Floyd, supporters of the statue -with guns and batsclashed with people trying to vandalize it. And although Mayor Jim Kenney has been trying for more than a year to remove the statue permanently because it represents a “public safety” problem, he has not been allowed to do so. What he did manage to do earlier this year was to put an end to Columbus Day in Philadelphia. By executive order, starting this year it will be renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The decision is just one of many that seek to revise what Columbus represents in times of historical revisionism. In an investigation by The Washington Post and MIT, it was found that 40 Columbus monuments were removed between 2020 and 2021. According to the report, 130 remain standing. There are more than 60 cities and counties in the U.S. that pay tribute to Columbus. There are some 6,000 references to the Genoese throughout the country, and after Lincoln and Washington he is the most commemorated character. In reality, Columbus came to prominence hundreds of years after the “discovery”, when patriots were looking for a figure to amalgamate the new country. It

ENGLISH was enough that he was not British. Soon the country was filled with references. The figure of Columbus in the U.S. would later serve the Italian Americans and Catholics who were seen as inferior to the northern Europeans, because just as they saw Columbus as a hero and a symbol of American identity, the new Italians could also fit in. The problem is that for the communities these symbols represent violence, racism and genocide. Columbus himself was accused of tyranny - he almost exterminated the Taino Indians - and was removed as governor of Hispaniola. This episode puts us again in the dilemma of which story to accept, that of a genius in cartography who acted according to a system of beliefs and values different from today’s, or a barbarian with a personal responsibility, because even for his time he went too far. And what if we understand both sides of the coin and act with respect, something that 429 years later we have not been able to achieve.

Starting this year it was renamed to Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

OCTOBER 20 - 27, 2021

he world is getting older and older. According to the World Bank, the population over 65 years of age accounts for 9% of the total global population, a percentage that will continue to rise in the following years. In Europe, for example, statistics show this reality. By 2030, the European Union will increase the number of workers over 50 to 55% of its total workforce. By 2040, spending on healthcare and pensions will increase 2.3 percentage points. Some of its countries already occupy the top 10 positions of the lowest birth rate in the world and 36% of the population will be over 65 by 2050. In the United States, as in Europe, the increase in the elderly population is related to the fall in the birth rate. It is even suggested that immigration would be a central factor in balancing aging with the working-age population. Another issue is the condition of old age. According to the World Health Organization, a considerable percentage of the elderly suffer from dementia and depression that are not treated or recognized by health systems. Added to this is the inability to carry out basic daily activities independently and not having the guidance of appropriate caregivers, isolating them from a society indifferent to this problem. Without a doubt, the debts with the old age are not only of the governments. Responsibilities for the sustainability of our finances, the discipline of our self-care and the debt with the discovery of our talents, hobbies, goals and life project rest in our consciences. Chilean writer and researcher Pilar Sordo inquired about old age in Latin America and reflected it in her book ‘I do not want to grow old. The keys to living fully and enjoying the passage of time.’ She assures that we grow old when we live more on memories than on projects. Aging is one of the few things that every human being has guaranteed from birth and, paradoxically, it is what we least prepare for. If from childhood we understand that day by day we cultivate what will endure us in old age, perhaps we will learn to be less sad adolescents, less unconscious young people, less irresponsible adults and, of course, less self-conscious old men.

The world’s population is aging, but the situation is most noticeable in Europe and the United States. The migration of young people from other latitudes is an alternative. The increase in the elderly population is related to the fall in the birth rate.

CIERRE IN CLOSING

“G-WHAT-A-COW:” ENGLISH PHONETICS OF MY NON SPANISH LAST NAME

I celebrate my “Indigineous People Day” sharing this old anecdote about my Native American last name.

W

hen Christophoros Colombus came to America, we were forced to learn and use only the five vowels that make the Spanish language so easy to pronounce. Easy, indeed, when compared to the 14 vowels we native Spanish-language speakers have such a hard time figuring out when using the English language. We first heard this confusing set of new vowels through the expletives of English buccaneers roaming the Caribbean and stealing as often as they could from the Spanish Galeones. It was during the 16th and 17th centuries on those ships returning to Europe — packed with the gold previously stolen from the Indians — that we heard pirates speaking Spanglish for the first time, if only to subdue the King of Spain’s soldiers taken by surprise by the much faster English pirates. The Native Americans, on the contrary, spoke hundreds of native languages, God only knows how many vowels were built into mysterious consonants, perhaps imitating the music from the winds blowing over the Andes, or the thousands of species clamoring deep in the jungles. Without the rules of a written language, each day must’ve been a day to improvise, improve a new sound, form a new word, and create a new meaning. The Babel of our native sounds in the Americas was finally called to order by the straightforward five Spanish vowels, simple enough to make natives and colonizers agree, as they could understand each other much faster. Once Spanish became the Lingua Franca, the new rulers were free to get rid of the nuances and impose a simplistic system of sounds and meanings that made them, for example, owners of the land, and the only purveyors of fear through a new religion that spoke

ENGLISH about damnation, and an army ready to inflict death with muskets and spears on those who dare to revolt. The huge continent called America accepted the new language exported by the tiny province of Castilla, in northern Spain. El Castellano was made the official language of the Spanish Empire in the new continent. We, native inhabitants of the land, had no other choice but to gradually give up our native dialects, whose traces are however survived in a few Hispanicized Indian words. Like “Guararé,” Guaricó,” “Guaynabo,” or “Guantánamo,” names of different and distant places in Panamá, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. It even happened in some family names. Family names that “triumphed over the grave” once the Conquistadores returned to Spain with the gold — not before leaving devastation behind: They annihilated the Indians, and replaced them with slaves brought from Africa so they could exploit the best lands taken from the defeated Indians. uando Cristóbal Colón llegó a América, nos vimos obligados a aprender y usar solo las cinco vocales que hacen que el idioma español sea tan fácil de pronunciar.

Palabras como “Guararé”, “Guaricó ”,“Guaynabo ”, o“ Guantánamo ”, correspondientes a nombres de lugares distintos y lejanos en Panamá, Venezuela, Puerto Rico y Cuba, o incluso en algunos apellidos. for example — neither Spanish nor English — which up to today, makes both Spanish and English speakers cringe at the pronunciation of its morphology: GUARACAO, a family name from the proud GUANE Tribe, today’s Province of Santander, in Eastern Colombia. Learning English late in my life allowed me to discover the secret connection between the phonetics of the 2 languages I now speak. The Hispanicized sounds from my very uncommon last name, I found out, were both in English and the Spanish pronunciations. However, they were represented by different signs, and it made it tricky for anyone to pronounce correctly on the first try. Not certainly for the bullies in the school when I was growing up, who ridiculed its sound as it resembled “Guaraguao” (a Taíno word that means avian predator), or suggested something of lesser quality because the Spanish colony and new language semantics had determined so. Today, I make people smile when I break the mystery down this way in North America: -“When you go to Lancaster, PA, and you see a big Holstein cow… What do you say?” -Uh, big cow, I guess... -No...Think again: When the cow is a really big, BIG cow. What do you say?” -What a cow! -Exactly!: What-A-Cow. Add a letter “G” in front and that’s it: You will have the perfect Spanish-language pronunciation of my last name:

“G-What-A-Cow”. Spain and England finally reconciled — yes, only in America! — where perhaps the clashes of the two languages at war for five centuries may finally settle their grievances as they did in the gentle phonetics of my Indigineous last name pronunciation.

-No... -¡Menuda vaca! (What a cow!) -¡Exacto!: What-A-Cow.
