IT WASN’T JUST IN PUERTO RICO THE ORGANIZATION OF PHILADELPHIA’S PUERTO RICAN COMMUNITY STOOD IN FORCE WITH THOSE MARCHING IN SAN JUAN’S STREETS.

LA COMUNIDAD PUERTORRIQUEÑA DE FILADELFIA SE MANTUVO FUERTEMENTE UNIDA A SUS COMPATRIOTAS QUE MARCHABAN EN LAS CALLES DE SAN JUAN.

I wish I was there.” This is what Puerto Rican activist Charito Morales told WHYY when the publication asked her for her thoughts on the protests in Puerto Rico against Ricardo Rosselló. At the time, many Puerto Ricans in the city sat worried about the outcome of the island’s growing tensions. Rosselló was refusing to step down and demonizing the protesters. In reaction, many Puerto Ricans in Philadelphia — under the leadership of Morales, Ana Montañez of Voces del Barrio, Kimberly Lamberti of Latinos en Marcha and Rev. Jesse Alejandro (just to name a few) — organized in solidarity with their fellow brethren on the island. Morales organized the first protest on the morning of July 16, in front of where she works at the Providence Center in Fairhill. Much like in the streets of San Juan, attendees brought signs emblazoned with #RickyRenuncia and chanted for Puerto Rico’s freedom from Rosselló’s corruption.

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL The protests in Philly continued until Rosselló resigned, upon which, a celebration was organized on Friday, Aug. 2 in Fairhill Square Park by Montañez, Lamberti and Alejandro. It was a cathartic moment for all Puerto Ricans, and those in Philly celebrated the victory just as much as those on the island, deservedly so. For Puerto Ricans in Philadelphia and the diaspora as a whole, the fate of the island going forward is their struggle as well - and in the event the new administration doesn’t follow through with promises to curb corruption, they will surely rejoin their fellow Puerto Ricans in another show of the people’s power.z - THE EDITOR

"

magine for a second that you’re in your home, watching TV and enjoying dinner when you get an unexpected knock at your door. You answer to find an unknown individual telling you to move out to make way for new development in your community. It’s a reality many in the Norris Square neighborhood have had to grapple with for the past couple of years. “How would you feel?” asked Jackie, a block captain in the neighborhood who spoke at a recent community protest of gentrification held on Aug. 8. The many construction sites, full of constant hammering and buzzing saws, that once dotted Northern Liberties and Fishtown have crept north on the Market-Frankford line to the predominantly Latino community.

For many looking from the outside in, this movement is seen as a sign of progress being made at revitalizing parts of the city in need. But for those residents who’ve lived in Norris Square for most of their lives, it is a telltale sign of the gentrification that has defined the past decade in the lower northeast of Philadelphia. On Thursday, Aug. 8, those residents — led by the Norris Square Community Action Network — held a demonstration at the corner of Norris and Howard streets to make their voices heard in the piecemeal development of their neighborhood. The target of the protest was Onion Flats, a nearby developer with plans to turn a deserted factory on the block into an 88-unit apartment building. Nilda Pimentel, one of the protest organizers stressed that residents are not stubborn to the idea of change and development, but the amount of units planned by Onion Flats is unsustainable. “This community and many other communities can not continue to absorb density,” said Pimentel. As a compromise to the 88unit plan, the community requested Onion Flats downsize the project to only 56 units. But density isn’t the only problem.

“This is not the first and it’s not going to be the last development.” Nilda Pimentel

INCOME DISPARITY

In a community where the average income is approximately $23,400 a year, the asking price per month for a one-bedroom unit in the new apartments is $1,400. Cheri Honkala, a former Green Party candidate for Vice President and longtime activist for the homeless in Philly laid bare what this disparity looks like from a majority of the neighborhood’s perspective. “They’re preparing for the rich people in this community ,” said Honkala. “They’re preparing to take away the culture of this community.”

CALLING ON THE CITY

Beyond the Onion Flats, the demonstration on Aug. 8 was also a call to the city to reform its zoning laws and tax abatement legislation, which according to literature distributed by protest organizers, “tilt the scales to developers with deep pockets.” City Council put off reforming Philly’s 10-year tax abatement until it returns from its summer recess in September. Until their voices are heard, Norris Square will keep fighting. “This is not the first and it’s not going to be the last development,” said Pimentel. z

t’s no secret that cruelty is the centerpiece of Donald Trump’s immigration policy. Everybody knows it, although there are many – too many -- who shamefully either choose to ignore it or, worse, support it. What would be aberrant behavior at any other time, under Trump’s regime has become official policy: Children are the main target of this administration’s brutality which has gone as far as ripping babies from their mothers’ arms as a “deterrent” (Trump’s word) for migrants from Central America. Surprisingly only to someone as vulgar and ignorant as Trump and his minions, such inhumane measures have failed miserably. Thousands of people – men, women and children-- from Honduras, Guatemala and El

Salvador keep making the death-defying trek from their countries to the U.S. border and will keep doing so as long as runaway violence, abject poverty and entrenched corruption in their countries, much of it created, abetted or enabled by U.S. policies, force them to flee to save their lives. The lack of values, the disrespect for human lives, the perversion of morality of Trump and his administration is nowhere clearer than in the fact that, according to a Justice Department report made public by Representative Ted Deutch, (D-Fl) in February, and reported by the New York Times, there were 4,500 complaints in four years about the sexual harassment and abuse of immigrant children in U.S custody. Horrible, of course. But then again, what else can be expected when the person who occupies the White House is a self-confessed sexual harasser of women, whose blatant racism categorized refuge-seeking families as less than human? "These aren't people. These are animals," Trump said back in May. At the risk of insulting animals, I would say the only animal here, a particularly brutal and destructive one, lives in the White House. z

tion was: “Journeys… Past, Present & Future.” “When we were considering possible themes for this year’s convention, we wanted to focus on people feeling empowered by their personal stories, their own hero’s journey and to take action,” ALPFA CEO Damian Rivera, said in a statement. Each of the panels, sessions and speeches throughout the convention functioned as a way to pinpoint just that — empowerment and taking action. Adria Córdova, president of ALPFA Philadelphia, called the convention “remarkable.” “We heard from many inspiring leaders who encouraged us all to be loud and make our voices heard and be proud of who we are as a Latino community,” Adria Córdova, president of ALPFA Philadelphia, said in an email. “Given the current state of our country, it was encouraging to be with thousands of other Latinos empowering and supporting one another.” The featured speakers from the convention were: Sekou Andrews, CEO & Founder of SekouWorld Inc.; Claudia Romo Edelman, Founder of the We Are All Human Foundation; Joe Bru-

suelas, Chief Economist at RSM US, LLP; and Luis Visoso, VP Finance Worldwide Consumer Amazon. The ALPFA convention also provided an opportunity to recognize the 45 professional chapters and 160 student chapters working to connect and build the next generation of Latino professionals. The Philadelphia professional chapter was named the 2019 Chapter of the Year. “[This] is an accomplishment we are extremely proud of and would not have been possible without the support of our partners, sponsors, and dedicated members,” said Córdova. Women of ALPFA (WOA), an initiative dedicated to the professional success of Latina women, also played a significant role in the convention. The WOA program at the convention included several panels for all levels — early career, mid-career, and executive level. It also featured a luncheon panel where three esteemed Latina leaders were awarded for their trailblazing work. In addition, more than $100,000 total in scholarships were awarded to 30 deserving students across the country throughout the convention. The annual convention is just one small part of ALPFA’s mission, however. “The ALPFA Convention is just the start of empowering the Latino community,” said Rivera, noting that their objectives are centered on igniting inspiration and empowerment for Latinos to take action and use their voice to create change. The 2020 ALPFA Convention will take place in Las Vegas, NV. z

OLITICAL HURRICANE SWEPT PUERTO RICO F

ENGLISH

or many Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico and living elsewhere, Governor Ricardo Rosselló was on thin ice even before the chain of events that began on July 9. The island was on the very slow road (and still is) to economic recovery after a decade of financial difficulties. What little progress was made washed away when Hurricane Maria swept across the island, taking at least 3,000 lives and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee to a mainland U.S. whose government hoped Puerto Rico sank like Atlantis as an alternative to dealing with the growing crisis.

PRIVATE CHATS SIMMER

But on Tuesday, July 9, a different kind of storm took shape over Puerto Rico. That morning, as Rosselló vacationed in France, a first series of leaked private messages exchanged between him and members of his inner circle made their rounds on social media. These first 11 messages were just the tip of the iceberg, but in them, Rosselló and his high-ranking friends, laid digital waste to some of their political opponents with a mix of memes and insults. Social media had a field day. Within the first 24 hours, both #Telegramgate (a reference to the messaging app used by the Rosselló and friends) and #RickyLeaks were trending topics on Twitter. And it would only get worse.

FBI PROBE STRIKES GOLD

A day later, on July 10, the FBI slammed its domino onto the table that was becoming Puerto Rican politics and arrested two former Rosselló officials for corruption. The arrests of former Secretary of the Department of Education Julia Keleher and former Director of the Health Insurance Administration Ángel Ávila Marrero, along with four other associates, came after an FBI investigation that was first reported on June 24 — when Ávila resigned from her post. Ávila and Keleher were charged with 32 counts each of conspiracy, wire fraud, money laundering, and theft of government funds, while the other four were indicted for conspiracy, money laundering, or both. The bombshell indictments ended Rosselló’s “first vacation in two and a half years” as he put it, but more importantly, confirmed the belief of many in Puerto Rico that his government operated outside the law. The first cracks exposed by the chats were now more pronounced. Further scandal was

12 •

sure to deepen the divide, and the island only had to wait another 24 hours.

#RICKYLEAKS ROUND TWO

On July 11, another set of private Telegram messages were released to the public from the same chat as before. This time, there were more targets and the attacks took a more discriminatory tone. In one particular message, Rosselló threatened former New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and called her a “puta,” or “whore” in English. Viverito initially drew Rosselló’s ire for criticizing Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez for supporting the notion of U.S. statehood for Puerto Rico. She responded to his threats with a statement released on Twitter denouncing Rosselló’s machismo and calling for his resignation as governor. “When a male chauvinist wants to belittle a woman, he uses words like “whore” to belittle, dehumanize and degrade her. A person who uses that language against a woman, whether a public figure or not, should not govern Puerto Rico,” wrote Viverito. Puerto Ricans took Viverito’s call for resignation to the streets of San Juan with the same message. In a press conference held on the night of July 11, Rosselló — still caught up for canceling his vacation — justified his messages in the chat as a way “to blow off steam,” but asked for forgiveness for their content. Rosselló also said he wouldn’t talk about the chats again. He had another thing coming.

#RICKYLEAKS TO #RICKYRENUNCIA

By July 12, the protests in San Juan calling for Rosselló’s resignation were gaining steady momentum heading into the weekend as thousands of Puerto Ricans braved tear gas and occasional violence to gather outside the governor’s residence at La Fortaleza on Thursday and Friday nights. On Saturday, July 13, protesters took the driver’s seat as Puerto Rico’s Centro de Periodismo Investigativo released the motherload of leaks when it published all 889 pages of private chat messages between Rosselló and his inner circle. The leaks not only revealed how many of Rosselló’s inner circle were involved — adding three more high-ranking officials to the list — but also how this elite group felt about their work in Puerto Rico. And about Puerto Ricans in general. Overall themes, which had been revealed in snippets during

the week, were shown in full. The group disparaged and threatened their political enemies with offensive memes and violent messages, and discussed in detail public policy and how they were to manipulate public perception. They also pulled no punches when discussing Hurricane Maria. Christian Sobrino Vega, Puerto Rico’s Chief Fiscal Officer joked about the amount of bodies in the morgue after Maria and suggested their use “to feed our crows,” — a reference to their critics. On Sunday, July 21, Rosselló announced his departure as leader of his New Progressive Party and that he would not seek reelection come the next cycle in a Facebook Live stream. But he did not resign and doubled down on his intention to stay out his term, which only added fuel to the fire. Protesters had already been planning their biggest showing yet for the following Monday and the new leaks along with Rosselló’s stubborness made the day go down in Puerto Rico’s history.

THE MARCH OF THE PEOPLE

Heeding the call of Puerto Rican superstars like Ricky Martin — who was subject to insults about his sexual orientation in the chats — Bad Bunny and Residente of Calle 13, hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans flooded the streets of San Juan in what was called “The March of the People” (Marcha del Pueblo). The protest, which was the largest in Puerto Rico’s history, lasted all day and caused the shutdown of all of the island’s major roadways. Many businesses also closed in preparation. What was unique about The March of the People was that it united all Puerto Ricans, no matter their politics or economics, under one banner that read #RickyRenuncia.

As the protest carried on over the day and into the night to the music of resistance, the world took note, and so did Rosselló. Two days after the march, Rosselló heeded the demands and announced his resignation from the governorship to become the first to do so in Puerto Rico’s history. The demonstrations after that were of celebration, but the disgraced leader still had to pick his successor.

THE REIGN OF PIERLUISI

The man chosen to succeed Rosselló and lead Puerto Rico into the future was Pedro Pierluisi. Before taking the helm, he spent eight years as the island’s non-voting member of U.S. Congress and was appointed acting Secretary of State on July 31, replacing Luis Rivera Marín, who was a participant of Rosselló’s private chat. Pierluisi came into power with a promise to stabilize country, but two days after being sworn in, his appointment was deemed unconstitutional by Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court. The court’s unanimous decision was based on the fact that Pierluisi was never sworn in to be Sec-

retary of State by both chambers of Puerto Rico’s congressional body. At the time of the political crisis, both chambers were on recess. With that in mind, President of the Senate, Thomas Rivera Schatz, who was also vying for the governorship, brought the issue to the Supreme Court. Pierluisi’s fall meant the rise of Wanda Vázquez Garced, Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Justice.

WANDA VÁZQUEZ

On Aug. 7, just four days after Pierluisi was sworn in as Governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vázquez Garced went through the same process. Vázquez’s appointment comes with its fair share of speculation, considering when Rosselló resigned, she expressed on Twitter her desire not to be chosen as his successor. Vázquez has also been embroiled in her own political scandals. In 2018, she intervened on behalf of her daughter regarding a burglary and faced violations of the government’s ethics laws, but the charges were later dropped. While not facing backlash comparable to Rosselló, Vázquez also faced calls for her own resignation during the two weeks of protests. However, she took the title of governor with the promise of eradicating corruption in the government. It’s yet to be seen whether Vázquez can follow through on her promise, but one thing’s for sure, if she doesn’t the Puerto Rican people stand ready to hit the streets once more and inspire the whole world again.z

PORTADA Thousands took to the streets in protest day after day demanding that the then Governor Ricardo Rosselló resign. Puerto Ricans forced out Rosselló and his band of corrupt merry men and brought about a dramatic shift in the way politics has been played on the island for decades. And, in doing so, changed its history forever. As if in a Tale of Two Colonies and their struggle for freedom, Hong Kong soon followed suit in the Summer of Protest. Massive demonstrations protests brought Hong Kong International Airport to a stand still, with the citizens of this quasi-Chinese colony calling for the resignation of Chief Executive Lam and independence from the mainland. What do Puerto Rico and Hong Kong have in common beyond a humiliating colonial status? A massive, unified mobilization of people from all walks of life with a searing clarity of purpose and demands for a new leadership. This leaves our Lady Freedom with just one question: When will America have the guts to do a Puerto Rico? Or maybe even a Hong Kong? Because up to now, even in the face of Trump daily giving the finger to Lady Liberty and all that she stands for, and his egregious personal conduct, the American people have cowered and acquiesced. The voices of Trump’s critics on the street have yet to reach the White House. Let’s bring in the Puerto Ricans, with their music, the chants - Somos más y no tenemos miedo (We are more and we are not afraid) - and the pots and pans. A cacerolazo limpio. Puerto Ricans know how to do it and they will - come election time. They will have Trump dancing to Bad Bunny and Residente - Afilando Cuchillos. Sharpening Knives. The power, as they say in San Juan and Hong Kong, is in the streets. America - what are you waiting for?z

A cacerolazo limpio.

their community, the band devised a project to reach a new market. With José as first voice and guitarist, Felipe on bass, Andrés on drums, and Alejandro on guitar, Todos Santos was born. The name is a reference to the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico, held every November, and "seeks a connection with our culture that despite the distance is present in the heart of every Mexican who is far from their land,” according to the group's website. The band started playing covers of mainstream songs, but soon began to write their own lyrics. As Andrés puts it: “our genre, if you want to put it in those terms, is Latin rock but with a little bit of a social message.” This is heard in their many lyrics about corruption, poverty, and social injustices. For them it has been a challenge to stay relevant in a community with different tastes, but fortunately the public has responded positively to their music. Recently, the group had to overcome one of its biggest challenges. Three of the members were arrested by immigration on the way to Ruido Fest, a Latin Rock festival in Chicago. They had entered a contest to play at the festival, and after making it to the second round, were invited to perform in Chicago along with a host of other bands. However, the band was stopped by police for speeding on their way to the festival. The officers asked for their identification and proof of immigration status. As a result, immigration agents were called to the scene, and the three members were arrested and taken to a detention center. proyecto para alcanzar un nuevo mercado.

ENFOQUE Then it becomes part of your lifestyle, and it’s always good to get an expert’s advice, and make sure you’re not doing anything that could injure yourself. Fitness is important because we want to be self dependent as we age, and be able to move with confidence just to be able to do the activities of daily living. Strength is healthcare.

Can you talk a little bit about Elevate Health? Elevate Health & Performance started as a personal training studio, and has expanded into an integrated health facility where in addition to personal training, we do physical therapy, dietician services, and massage. We want to deliver health, and have a vision for a holistic practice where we rethink how health is delivered.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve encountered as a young entrepreneur? Trying to wear all the hats in business. It’s easy to do all of the minutiae of everyday tasks. It’s more important to set up processes, and be able to step aside to let other people grow. Work on the business, not just in the business.

If you were not in the wellness field, where do you see yourself? I would be in the restaurant and hospitality industry. I enjoy great food, people, and service. I actually don’t consider myself in the fitness industry, but in the hospitality industry. I like to treat people as the individual as they are.

Where do you hope to see Elevate Health five years down the line? Is expansion potentially on the horizon? I see elevate Health & Performance being a one stop shop for health. My next growth opportunity is to have an in-house doctor and psychologist to be a well-rounded holistic practice. Having a doctor will elevate us to truly be able to deliver health.

s the nation’s birthplace, Philadelphia embodies the American Dream through its red-hot tenacity, towering white architecture, and blue-ribbon innovation. But beyond this, it’s Philadelphia’s international communities and world heritage that have established its reputation as a pioneer on the global stage. For everyone interested in celebrating this legacy, the City of Philadelphia and Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) will host the fourth annual World Heritage City Celebration Dinner on September 5, 2019 to honor the international work that has made Philadelphia a beacon of modern democracy. Held at the Wanamaker Building’s Crystal Tea Room, this year’s event is co-chaired by Visit Philly President & CEO Jeff Guaracino and Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce CEO & President Jennifer Rodríguez, and will feature international entertainment. In years past, these global acts have embodied the diversity of Philadelphia’s identity, featuring everything from tango and dragon dance troupes to live didgeridoo performances and Caribbean music. Most importantly, the Dinner will honor Vernon Odom, who became invaluably

ENGLISH ingrained in the fabric of Philadelphia through his 42year career as a WPVI-TV/6abc broadcast journalist. Reporting with his trademark booming voice, Odom’s extensive career has taken him around the world, covering everything from Nelson Mandela’s prison release to the Soviet Union’s fall. Odom will be joined on-stage at the Dinner by his long-time colleague, Jim Gardner, for a conversation about his career, including his work in Latin America, Europe and Africa. The World Heritage Celebration Dinner was created in 2016 and continues to honor the iconic heritage and international populations that have made Philadelphia the first World Heritage City in the United States. Spearheaded by GPA, Philadelphia achieved its World Heritage City status on November 6, 2015, in recognition of its exceptional universal value and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Independence Hall. Over the years, GPA and its members have used this momentum to galvanize the community around owning and celebrating how their own heritage has placed them on the map. This was most recently captured through the launch of the National Historic Landmark (NHL) Mapping Project in July. Highlighting Philadelphia’s 67 NHLs, the NHL Map is available as both an illustrated print and an online database that additionally showcases community-identified heritage sites. As the backbone of Philadelphia’s cultural legacy, the NHL Map serves as another vehicle to improve the community’s ability to access Philadelphia’s rich history. By adopting this international mindset, GPA and its members have helped to pioneer a new age of Philadelphia’s relations with the country and the world by expanding the city’s role on the global stage. As a World Heritage City and city of world heritages, join us at the World Heritage City Celebration Dinner in celebrating the diversity that has made this all possible.

L DÍA had the privilege of hosting a reception last weekend with the leaders of six organizations of Latino professionals in Philadelphia. They are the Latinos who have become Engineers, Medical Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, and MBAs, and have been working in corporations and organizations across the region for years. And yet they are largely invisible to the general public. They are, however, a true crop of new leaders: Jazmin Reyes, the president of the Philadelphia chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and program manager at Eaton Corporation. Moises P. Young, program manager at AECOM, and another engineer with two degrees from Drexel University. Elizabeth Oquendo, president of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania, and director of the Conflict of Interest program at the Temple University School of Medicine. Brunilda Sanchez, the President of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Philadelphia chapter, and experienced professional nurse working for Bayada Home Health Care. Adria Córdova, President of the local chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA), and business executive at General Mills Corporation. Natalia Ortiz, a medical director at Temple

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL University Hospital, and president of the Society of Ibero Latin American Medical Professionals (SILAMP). We all agree that our story, the story of the growing ranks of Latino professionals in the region, is not documented enough. "We are literally “undocumented,” I said in jest. Not because of the absence of credentials, or documents, but because our stories, not documented anywhere, make us invisible. “Undocumented.” AL DÍA made a commitment to all of them to make their stories a priority in our news coverage. We will start this coming month of October with a special event and edition recognizing the Law Professionals. #ALDÍALawyersForumand Reception, with Guest of Honor Juan Sánchez, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, will be hosted this coming October 1st at the Pyramid Club. Don’t miss it!z

Pyramid Club. ¡No se lo pierdan!z
