n Saturday, August 3, a white supremacist traveled to the southern border of El Paso, Texas with a clear motive in mind — to open fire and kill Hispa-
nics. What many of us feared became a reality that day: the Hispanic community was attacked, but this time with more than just words from our President. From the moment Trump took center-stage, he has rarely missed a chance to criticize and dehumanize Latinos and immigrants — calling immigrants drug dealers and rapists, and demanding a way to keep them out through building a wall. Now, those living in El Paso have paid the deadly price for his words. In a manifesto allegedly published Saturday by the gunman and posted online just minutes before the shootings, the suspected shooter warned of a “Hispanic invasion of Texas,” blaming them for taking away jobs and blending cultures in the United States.

ENGLISH On Sunday, Trump told reporters “hate has no place in our country” but how can the Hispanic community trust our president when at a recent rally in Florida, he laughed off a supporter’s suggestion to shoot unauthorized migrants at the border. With everything said and done, we are left to wonder if this anti-immigrant rhetoric contributed to the massacre. As Texans and the rest of the nation went to sleep mourning the loss of life, we woke up to the news of another mass shooting taking place in Dayton, Ohio where nine people were killed. This leads us to ask when is enough, enough? Has America become a nation so plagued by mass shootings that people are becoming desensitized?z - THE EDITOR

ennsylvania State Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell of the 190th district wants the city to do something to address the gun violence that is plaguing Philadelphia. On July 23, she announced that city officials came together for a meeting earlier in the month to work on unveiling a gun violence prevention strategy here in Philadelphia. “We’re here because we’re tired of the bloodshed in Philadelphia,” Johnson-Harrell said during a press conference.

She noted that the city is looking to work with David Kennedy, a professor of criminal justice at John Jay College in New York City. His work helped create “Operation Ceasefire,” a problem-solving police initiative that was implemented in Boston in 1996 to reduce gun violence, illegal gun possession, and gang violence. The city’s strategy will build upon the focused deterrence strategy that was previously used in Philadelphia in 2013. “The strategy was very, very successful in reducing gun violence and while it’s had its criticisms, we have had an opportunity to look at the criticisms, to revise the model, and to make sure that it is not an over-policing model, but it is in fact a criminal justice reform, social justice model,” said Johnson-Harrell. The goal is to provide resources, therapy, jobs, training and education, as well as identify those who are committing gun violence in the city and help them put down the guns to create safe communities. The District Attorney’s Office is also in on the city implementing a gun violence prevention strategy. “We are in for a gun violence strategy that will... be strongly supplemented by things that provide pathways for the people most

The gun violence is even taking place in what should be the safer places in the city. State Rep. Morgan Cephas of the 192nd District, denoted the seven people who were wounded in a shooting in a city playground in the Overbrook neighborhood on July 13 as a major issue. “That doesn’t only impact the shooter and the victims, but it impacts an entire community and an entire neighborhood,” she said. Shootings such as this one could result in discontinuing block parties, shutting down recreation centers, and people being afraid to step foot outside their doors. “This is not a city, as great as Philadelphia, to have people be scared to interact in open spaces because of the gun violence that’s happening across the city,’ Cephas added. The pilot project will be targeted in West Philadelphia. “We need to meet people at the level of their needs, we need to reduce barriers to success, and we need to get the illegal guns off of the streets,” said Johnson-Harrell. “Right now, this is a human crisis.” z

t’s a devastating feeling for most Americans –or it should be --to understand in the deepest recesses of their conscience, that Donald Trump’s hypocrisy and opportunism run so profound, are so much part of his DNA, that even after the slaughter of 29 people in Texas and Ohio over 13 hours, he does not possess the minimum decency required to come clear, beg for forgiveness and admit that his hateful rhetoric has fueled the racist violence that has taken the lives of so many innocent people. It has to be despairing also to realize that as long as this man and his cronies remain in power, there is zero chance of murderous racist terrorism being eliminated or controlled. They –Trump,

ENGLISH Stephen Miller, Pompeo and all the other white supremacists in the White House-- are the ideologues of the racist hate that has transformed the U.S. into a killing field. That’s why hearing Trump say that “in one voice our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy,” would be laughable were it not for the tragedies his mendacity and his hateful rhetoric have helped bring upon the nation. As was to be expected, the president did not propose any gun laws; he is too much in bed with the NRA. It is almost surreal, but even after the El Paso shooter’s racist manifesto and his admission that he wanted to kill as many Mexicans as possible to stop the “invasion,” Trump proposed to link “strong background checks” with immigration restrictions. “So, Trump thinks that the best way to stop white supremacists from shooting innocent brown people is by getting rid of brown people,” New York sports journalist Roberto Abramowitz posted on Facebook. Yes, let’s build a wall. A wall that would impede Trump and all the hateful, ignorant, white supremacist terrorists from “invading” nations south of the border. z

nstalled within the slatted steel border fence separating the United States from Mexico, three pink seesaws stitched two binational communities together — allowing children from both sides to connect with one another. The masterminds behind the “Teeter-Totter Wall” project, Ronald Rael, an architecture professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Virginia San Fratello, an associate professor of design at San Jose State University, designed the concept for the binational seesaws ten years ago. Last week their design came to life — manifesting how the actions that occur on one side have a direct impact on the other. “The seesaw represents the idea that talks about the balances and equalities, and how the border is a literal fulcrum between U.S. and Mexican relationships; whether you think about it economically, politically, or humanistically,” Rael told AL DÍA during a phone interview.

On July 28, Rael and his crew transported the pink seesaws to Sunland Park, New Mexico, where a slatted border wall fence separates it from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. “A lot of our work has to do with play, but it doesn't discount the violence that happens at the border. Pink represents both, it’s fun and playful but it was also used to memorialize the women who were killed in the femicides in Juarez,” Rael said. People on both sides of the border unified for a moment, despite being divided by a fence. However, Rael was still concerned about how the authorities would react during the 30-min installation. He then realized both Border Patrol and National Guard Soldiers understood the language. "They watched and smiled," he said. While it was a moment of “connectedness”, Rael says it was also meant to show the humanity of those living in border communities. “I think people have many different kinds of perceptions of

what’s happening at the border today. I think the most important thing is to show there are people, families, children who live along the border and how the construction and politics of the wall affect their lives every day,” Rael said. An advocate for border communities, Rael says the wall is a scar that needs to be healed. “The way we advocate for border communities is to not advocate for the design of walls. We advocate for the design in the spaces the wall has invaded. We think those are the spaces that need addressing, these are the spaces that are left vacant, dangerous, and disconnect people.” z

Together with her father, Chanel created a family business: the Sprinkle of Jesus Corporation. Chanel's main goal is to break generational curses of poverty and build businesses with her family. The Sprinkle of Jesus app became the number one online ministry app throughout the three years that it has been running. Chanel wanted to incorporate the two topics she loves most: entrepreneurship and being a Chrisitian. The Sprinkle of Jesus app provides workshops and events where Christian entrepreneurs are able to attend and learn how to create their own businesses from scratch. With its success, Chanel was able to branch off and build other businesses such as the Curl Bible. She also invests in other businesses such as Jumping Jack Tax, Alakazam apps and Credit Exterminators. She invented these need-based apps to help people build their credits and grow their ability to make big purchases.

When someone has a mix of different heritages, it can be difficult to embrace each one, especially if they are not raised around

any specific culture. Chanel is of African American, Dominican, Puerto Rican and Panamanian descent. Growing up in the Delaware suburbs, Chanel was not able to embrace her Latina identity because she was not raised in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. When asked what being Latina means to her, Chanel’s simply replied: “I’m on the journey of embracing my Latina culture.” Chanel is a third-generation U.S. citizen born state-side, meaning that, like many young Latinas who were born in the U.S., she has been stripped away from her culture and language. Chanel currently doesn’t know Spanish, but one of her main goals is to learn the language in order to engage with the Hispanic community and embrace her Latina culture. “I’m still trying to figure it out and trying to learn all of that,” she said.
ROAD TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Growing up, Chanel always had her eye on becoming a surgical doctor until she dropped out of college and realized her true calling was to help people with their finances. She adopted the name Dana Chanel for her brand given to her by a former high school friend, who thought that her middle name and Chanel sounded good together. Although she started her entrepreneurship career with just her father, today her office consists of her husband, father and her brothers and sisters — or, as Chanel calls them, the “Wolf Pack.” Chanel wanted to created a family business to provide job opportunities for her family members as well. “That’s why I am so focused on changing you and giving you opportunity and making sure you never rely on someone else to be a provider for you and I know you will instill that in your kids,” Chanel said of the message she wants to communicate to other people. Other than creating her own businesses and providing service to others, Chanel travels from city to city teaching others the strategies of marketing and how to create their own businesses. Her strategy and family building dynamic has helped people become spiritually and financially stable by constructing their own business. “You don’t need to be popular in order to be profitable,” she said. z

hen Sister Mary Kennedy, an accredited legal representative for immigrants at the Aquinas Center in South Philadelphia, visited the border in April 2018, the only word she used to describe what she saw and heard was “unreal.” She met one woman immigrant who was told, “You’re a traitor to your country. You shouldn’t be here.” The woman came to the border running for her life, bringing her 10-year old son with her on the 2,500-mile journey from Central America. Back in her home country, her husband was killed the same day that her daughter was raped. “She knew who did it. She tried to raise a complaint. She got threatened and she had to get out,” said Kennedy.

When they arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border, the woman and her son were detained by one of the many vigilante groups that operated outside of any legal authority at the border. In response to the traitor charges, the woman said, “Well let me go back,” to which a member of the vigilante group threatened the death of her son as punishment for trying to immigrate to the U.S. “Can you imagine? To a woman who’s heartbroken already?” asked Kennedy. Her stories from the short visit to El Paso are just some of the thousands that have come from the border since the election of Donald Trump in 2016. His administration’s “zero-tolerance” approach to immigration has seemingly broken the system. In response, there is now a more fearful immigrant population seeking the help of immigration lawyers who are both overwhelmed and severely underfunded. But President Trump didn’t create this issue. His policies have exposed a system that has cracks stretching back several decades, and has built a shaky foundation on a long history of reactionary policies and timely disregard for immigrants. And it all started in 1961.

That year, a man named Clarence Earl Gideon was arrested and charged with a burglary that happened at a pool hall in Panama City, Florida. Gideon could not afford a lawyer and under Florida law, the state didn’t appoint him counsel. Gideon had to defend himself in court and lost, but wrote an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court from his cell in prison. Two years later, Gideon won the resulting case and the public defender system of America was created. As great as this was for Gideon and other individuals who couldn’t afford a lawyer for their criminal charges, those subject to civil proceedings — including immigration cases — were not granted the same access. “If you are poor and facing deportation, you might face that process alone,” said Jonah Eaton, an immigration lawyer at the Nationalities Service Center in Philadelphia. What followed in 1965 was the Hart-Cellar Act, which opened up the U.S. immigration system for more migrants to flow into the country. But despite what was a rare moment of modern AUGUST 7 - 14, 2019

A SELF-MADE PROBLEM
In the 1980s, decades before she made her fateful trip to the U.S.-Mexico border, Sister Mary Kennedy journeyed to Guatemala. She was there on a mission trip for the church and was admittedly out of her element at first. “The first day I landed there I was like: ‘What am I doing here? I don’t know the language. I don’t know where I’m going,’” she said. Despite initial doubts, Kennedy learned Spanish and grew to love the people of the country, even as she witnessed the suffering wrought by a genocide perpetrated by the right-wing government against the country’s rural, indigenous communities.

By the time of Kennedy’s visit, the Guatemalan Civil War had waged for almost 30 years. The conflict was started in 1960, when a group of left-wing guerrillas attempted to overthrow the government of then-president Ydigoras Fuentes. The guerrillas were outraged at Fuentes’ secret aid of the CIA, which trained Cuban exiles in Guatemala for the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion. The U.S. would return to the country later in the 60s to train brutal counterinsurgency forces that would support military dictatorships committing genocide. And Guatemala wasn’t the only place this happened. From Chile and El Salvador to Nicaragua, Honduras and the Dominican Republic: the U.S. had a hand in supporting dictatorships that destabilized life and stagnated growth for generations throughout Latin America. This combination is something many of these countries still feel to this day, especially in Central America, and a main reason for the massive migration north. “We don’t seem to understand here, that America has caused a lot of the conditions in these other countries,” said Kennedy.

IIRIRA AND THE CRIMINALIZATION OF IMMIGRATION
In 1996, faced with massive illegal migration from south of the border, U.S. Congress and President Bill Clinton wanted a solution. What they created was the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, IIRIRA for short, or, as Vox’s Dara Lind put it: “immigration enforcement as we know it today, where deportation is a constant and plausible threat to millions of immigrants.” IIRIRA not only expanded the amount of crimes that made immigrants eligible for deportation, but bypassed many of the legal processes to fast-track deportation. The 1996 act was an enforcement reaction to the massive influx of immigrants. What followed IIRIRA was a series of counter-reactionary policies that created more visas for immigrants.

Rona Gershon, an immigration lawyer at HIAS Pennsylvania, said that while many of these visas do help immigrants, their implementation has depended on when it is beneficial for the government. EL FRAUDE NOTARIAL
Para la cantidad de buenos abogados de inmigración que existe para ayudar a los inmigrantes a obtener la ciudadanía, existe más de unos cuantos males que harán que los deporten. Los notarios son individuos que se presentan ante los inmigrantes como abogados capaces, pero que no están calificados y que “en realidad no tienen idea de lo que hacen”, dijo David Bennion, un abogado de inmigración y fundador del Free Migration Project. Y aún algunos abogados profesionales pueden dar asesoría igualmente inadecuada, según Bennion. La única defensa contra cualquier tipo de fraude por parte de un notario o abogado en el área de Filadelfia es la organización Justice at Work. For as many good immigration lawyers as there are to help immigrants toward citizenship, there are more than a few bad ones who will get them deported. Notarios are individuals who present themselves to immigrants as capable lawyers, but have no qualifications and who “really have no idea what they’re doing,” said David Bennion, an immigration lawyer and founder of the Free Migration Project. And even some licensed attorneys can give equally bad advice, according to Bennion. The only bulwark against any type of notario or attorney fraud in the Philadelphia area is Justice at Work. Evy Tolentino, a paralegal at the organization, said fraud of this nature is a “huge problem.” So much so, that Justice at Work cannot handle every case it is presented and limits itself to the high-impact proceedings — ones involving lots of money and large groups of victims. It’s also hard to prove that an attorney lied, said Tolentino, making it very difficult to get a favorable ruling in court against a notario or bad lawyer. Jaya Ramji-Nogales, a law professor at Temple University and former board member of Esperanza’s Immigration Legal Services branch, says the govern-

ment can do more to weed out the frauds. Her answer is the G-28 form. It is used to announce the appearance of an attorney or accredited representative in immigration court on behalf of an immigrant. The form can be used by the government to regulate fraudulent attorneys in the same way the bar does. “The Department of Justice could be regulating and could be investigating and could be making sure people aren’t getting scammed, but it’s just not,” said Ramji-Nogales. Only one case pursued by Justice at Work has ever resulted in criminal charges, and the attorney implicated wasn’t disbarred. Despite the anticlimactic result, it was a small victory. And in the sea of dysfunction that has surrounded immigration for much longer than Donald Trump, there are other small victories to celebrate.
FILLING THE GAP WITH EDUCATION
At Villanova University, with more than 20 years in immigration law, professor Michele Pistone was fed up. “I was angry and ashamed our system doesn’t value justice or truth,” she said. Noticing the lack of representation for immigrants in court, Pistone formulated a way to diversify career paths in the law industry to combat the short-

Partially accredited reps can provide legal counsel, while fully accredited reps can also litigate in immigration court. Pistone’s new pilot program, the Villanova Interdisciplinary Immigration Studies Training for Advocates (VIISTA), seeks to train partially and fully accredited reps to fill the gap in immigration legal services. The pilot finished its first semester in the spring of 2019 and looks to launch in the fall of 2020. Pistone cited a 2015 University of Pennsylvania study, which analyzed the access to legal counsel for immigrants nationwide between 2007 and 2012, as the impetus for starting VIISTA. It found that 86% of detained immigrants and 63% outside of detention appeared in immigration court without legal representation. Of those not represented, only 2% detained had a successful outcomes in their cases and 17% outside of detention won their cases. “Having an advocate is crucial to saving families,” said Pistone. The same study was used by a coalition of organizations across Philadelphia to advocate for the city to dedicate public funds for immigration representation.
PHILLY FUNDS IMMIGRATION LAWYERS
The first city in the U.S. to dedicate public funds to immigration lawyers was New York City, thanks to Judge Robert Katzmann in 2014. Since then, New York’s system of immigration representation has become a model that has inspired a movement across the country. “It’s called civil-Gideon,” said Jonah Eaton of Nationalities Ser-

On July 16, Philadelphia joined the movement by partnering with the Vera Institute, a New Yorkbased justice organization, to become part of its SAFE network and provide public funding for immigration legal representation. “It’s in line with the administration’s philosophy about equality and due process, and the values that this country and this city were built upon,” said Miriam Enriquez, executive director of Philadelphia’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. The SAFE network is comprised of a number of cities and counties across the country that have dedicated public funds to immigration legal representation. Potential cities must apply and are selected to receive a grant. Shayna Kessler, senior program associate at Vera, says the network receives many applications from cities and counties throughout the U.S. that are both geographically and politically diverse. “It’s a real strong marker of how much support there is across the country for this issue,” she said. Philadelphia matched the $100,000 grant provided by Vera for a total of $200,000 in funding for a pilot program. The amount is small, but it’s a start in Pennsylvania. “Our hope would be that other jurisdictions in the state will follow Philadelphia’s lead,” said Enriquez. z

hen you listen to the first call of the male voices in the Parranda El Clavo - the group that accompanies Betsayda Machado – your body electrifies and anticipates the rhythm of the tamboras. Betsayda Machado arrived in France late on June 18 to bring her popular Venezuelan music on a European summer tour, accompanied by Ote Gómez, Óscar Ruiz, Nereida Machado, Youse Cardozo, Belén Palacios, and Asterio Betancourt - her parranderos. Originally from El Clavo - a community of Barlovento (Estado Miranda) in Venezuela - Betsayda Machado invited producer Juan Souki for the first time to listen to the parranda that was coming from her home in December 2015.

In connection to typical Christmas celebrations of the Venezuelan coast, the parrandas join the people in a magic-religious celebration accompanied by the fusion of percussion instruments. Each year on December 15, and framed in the Christmas mass, the entire community of Barlovento transforms the Catholic tradition into a popular rite.

A year after Souki’s visit, La Parranda El Clavo was touring. Unlike the big Venezuelan folkloric orchestras Un Solo Pueblo, for example - Betsayda and her band had to simplify the staging and translate the feeling into a universal language with only nine members. To do so, they made their voices the main instrument. "With our first trip to Canada in 2016, we realized that we could do it," says a hoarse Betsayda in the middle of her summer tour in Europe. With its new format, the group Betsayda Machado and La Parranda El Clavo then began to conquer the world. Between quitiplás, culoepuya, corian drum, and maracas, the group bring the Caribbean to places as different as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, Germany, and Austria. "People understand it [the message], even though they don't understand what we are saying, but they feel the music, they dance, and they enjoy it," says the singer before her second show in Lyon, recalling how, the night before, little French children took the dance floor to the rhythm of Merengada E' Ron. Betsayda Machado has been singing since she was five years old, but the school where she developed group leader-skills was Vasallos del Sol - a famous Venezuelan folkloric group founded in 1990 in the Popular Culture Workshops of the Bigott Foundation. "Venezuela has always been proud that Vasallos has represented us for so long," says the singer, who polished an unequaled voice during her time in the band, mostly influenced by icons such as Celia Cruz or Toto la Momposina. Today, her new group assumes the inherited responsibility of the great ones, taking popular Venezuelan culture to the world, gathering its diaspora around songs that take us back home.

Being a country divided by the worst economic and humanitarian crisis in its history - and in the history of Latin America - Venezuelans all over the world can momentarily forget their country’s troubles and enjoy the Caribbean breeze brought by the songs and percussions of La Parranda El Clavo. After having recorded a single album in 2017 with the entire El Clavo community, now Betsayda and her band are looking to produce a recording with the original line-up, especially after their collaboration with Souki in a play in Miami. But their most important work is at home. For Machado, being an exponent of popular music today is "an arduous task" and goes far beyond finding space in the music industry. It has to do with the sense of community and what they have achieved for their village in Barlovento. "Before we went on tour, we left 243 children in El Clavo between November and December, doing Parranda, playing fulía, dancing burriquita," the artist concludes. "Their mothers have been totally involved in the work, even when they don't have money to buy a uniform for their kids, and it is hard what is happening in Venezuela, but we will overcome, I'm sure." z

Con su nuevo formato, la agrupación Betsayda Machado y
La Parranda El Clavo empezó entonces a conquistar el mundo. “A la gente le llega (el mensaje), a pesar de que no entienden lo que estamos diciendo, pero sienten la música, la bailan y la gozan”, dice la cantante, recordando cómo la noche anterior pequeños niños franceses tomaban la pista de baile al ritmo de Merengada E’ Ron. Betsayda Machado ha estado cantando desde sus cinco años, pero la escuela que le formó como cabeza de grupo fue Vasallos del Sol, famosa agrupación folclórica venezolana fundada en 1990 en los Talleres de Cultura Popular de la Fundación Bigott. “Toda Venezuela siempre ha estado orgullosa de que Vasallos nos haya representado durante tanto tiempo”, asegura la cantante, quien pulió una voz inigualable, influenciada por íconos como Celia Cruz o Toto la Momposina. Hoy en día, su nueva agrupación asume la responsabilidad heredada de los grandes y lleva al mundo la cultura popular venezolana, y reúne a su diáspora alrededor de canciones que nos llevan de nuevo a la Venezuela que tanto extrañamos. Siendo un país dividido por la peor crisis económica y humanitaria de su historia, y de la historia de América Latina, los venezolanos regados por el mundo disfrutan la brisa caribeña que traen los cantos y percusiones de la Parranda El Clavo. Después de haber grabado un solo disco con toda la comunidad del pueblo El Clavo, ahora Betsayda y su agrupación buscan producir una grabación con la alineación original que se monta en escena, en especial después de su colaboración con Souki en una obra teatral en Miami. Pero su labor más importante, está en casa. Para Machado, ser exponente de la música popular hoy en día es “una ardua tarea” y va mucho más allá de hacerse un espacio en la industria. Tiene que ver con el sentido de comunidad y lo que han logrado para su pueblo en casa. “Nosotros antes de venirnos de gira, dejamos entre noviembre y diciembre a 243 niños en El Clavo, haciendo Parranda, tocando fulía, bailando burriquita,” concluye la artista. “Las madres se han involucrado totalmente en el trabajo, aún cuando no tienen cómo comprarle un uniforme a los niños, y es duro lo que está pasando en Venezuela, pero vamos a salir de ahí, estoy segura.” z

Usually the students, ages 8-21, would come to different sites around the country and audition there. However, Huertas felt that the high cost of travel to audition spots on the mainland led to a substantial amount of talent on the island being missed. “We wanted to offer them the opportunity to be seen more than anything,” Huertas said. For Huertas, it was a way to reconnect with her roots. Born into the dance world on the island, Huertas’ mother was her first ballet teacher. Her father was also a ballet dancer, and Huertas followed in her parents’ footsteps by auditioning for local companies and working as an apprentice at Ballet Concierto. As a young dancer, Huertas participated in summer intensive programs on the U.S. mainland, from New York City to Washington D.C., to develop her skills.

Para ella, fue una manera de reconectarse con sus raíces. Nació en el mundo de la danza de la isla, con una madre que fue su primera maestra de ballet, y una padre que también fue bailarín de ballet. Huertas, seguía sus pasos y audicionaba para compañías de danza locales, a la vez que trabajaba como aprendiz en Ballet Concierto. Cuando era una jóven bailarina, Huertas asistió a programas de verano intensivos en el área continental de Estados Unidos, desde Nueva York hasta Washington, para desarrollar sus talentos. CULTURE Now, as a teacher, Huertas recognizes that certain economic barriers and lack of funds for the arts have decreased opportunities for many dancers in Puerto Rico. With support for this new initiative from the School of Pennsylvania Ballet to audition the students on the island, Huertas and her partners began planning the audition dates. A total of 85 students showed up for the auditions in Puerto Rico, held at the end of 2018. Out of the initial 85 who auditioned, 15 were accepted. In the end, eight Puerto Rican students, one male and seven female, came to Philadelphia to participate in the training. The program operates in a pre-professional environment which challenges the young dancers’ abilities and artistic expression. Throughout the five weeks of classes, the dancers work with the instructors at the school and collaborate with their fellow students to improve their technique. Huertas emphasized that the program doesn't just teach ballet; it helps students develop life skills as well. “It is a very rigorous environment once you [are at this level]…There are so many areas for them to become disciplined,” she noted. All of the students have been dancing most of their lives and are dedicated to improving their skills as dancers, with the hope of becoming professional ballerinas. Each of the four students who spoke to AL DÍA about their experiences said that they were ecstatic once they knew they were selected to the summer intensive program. The young ballerinas feel that the program has changed who they are as dancers. “Over here I’ve learned to flow better,” Grecia Sanchez said. “When I return to Puerto Rico, I’m going to be a completely new ballerina, with a lot of knowledge and good experiences,” said student Añalix Oliz. As for Huertas, she already has the dates selected for next year’s auditions, which will be held at Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan. Huertas recognizes the importance of providing these opportunities for the students. “It is a great opportunity and life changing for them. What they're seeing here is what they will see in the real world. Even when they come back, their perspective on what they can do with this dance education is going to be completely different,” she said.z

ristal Sotomayor had just graduated from college and was embarking on her first documentary when she walked into a community meeting held by Juntos, the immigrant rights organization in South Philly, in March of 2018. It was “fate,” said Sotomayor, that it happened to be the perfect moment for the beginning of a partnership that would eventually produce “Expanding Sanctuary,” a documentary on the work of Juntos and immigrant activists to expand immigrant rights in Philadelphia.

Sotomayor said that at that first Juntos meeting she attended, camera in hand, the group of activists and community members began to talk about an issue that at the time “wasn't a big deal” to many in the city — but within a few months would be a focal point of immigrant rights’ activism in Philly in the midst of the national pushback on the family separation policy at the border.

Kristal Sotomayor Organizers were fighting for an end to the sharing of the Philadelphia police database (PARS) with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “Juntos was able to bring this national issue, focus it in, and make it local,” Sotomayor said of the way that the organization and activists mobilized in order to end the PARS agreement, in addition to other efforts to expand sanctuary protections in the city. Sotomayor said that her goal with the film has been to collaborate with members of Juntos and the Latinx immigrant community in South Philly to be able to show Latinx individuals in a different light from how they are often portrayed in the media. A GoFundMe campaign, “Seed & Spark,” is raising the financial support necessary to finish the 26-minute documentary and debut it by the fall. The campaign ends Aug. 15.

In addition to rough-cut screenings to be held at Juntos’s office, in which community members can provide feedback, Sotomayor said that they plan to hold a gala in September or October of this year so that everyone featured in the film can dress up and attend in order to celebrate their achievements. “I just want people to watch the film and leave feeling so powerful because they’re in the film and they’re movie stars now,” Sotomayor said. Sotomayor has entered the film in festivals, and also plans to have a number
of community screenings throughout the city and state. In addition to the collaboration and work of Juntos and members of the Latinx community in South Philly, Sotomayor also credited Marángeli Mejía Rabell, producer of Expanding Sanctuary and director of Philadelphia Latino Film Festival, as well as Annie Diaz, editor of the film and a Puerto Rican documentary and fiction filmmaker based in Lancaster, PA, with providing the support integral to completing the project.z

o other city in the country impresses me more than the city of El Paso, on the border with Texas. I have been there multiple times visiting the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso, the renowned “UTEP,” an institution with which AL DÍA has developed ties over the years. Several of the journalists reared in our newsroom came from there, and for us El Paso has been just a step away from Philadelphia, home today to several of the graduates AL DÍA recruited at UTEP. El Paso is the best of the worlds: U.S. Latino culture at the core, a healthy and very organized local economy that allows for a middle class status for most of its residents, and a good American civic and security system which makes the small town one of the safest in the country. The racial and ethnic diversity mixed together in its population is unique, a beautiful campus where all the cultures of the world converge and thrive is the center of town. Most visible is a cheerful spirit of its residents, proud of their en-

clave on one of the most peaceful binational crossroads in the world. Until last Saturday, when a deranged shooter came to shatter that peace with the horrible sounds of an assault rifle’s gunshots. Those who us who know El Paso and its resilient spirit know that the beautiful town will recover from this one. The goodness of the American spirit, and the nobility of the Latino soul, knitted together in the social and cultural fabric of this unique city, will prevail at the end, and the unfortunate events that just happened there will make their unique idiosyncrasy stronger than ever. Yes, El Paso is a family, and it will be an example of unity for the nation.z
