T

he impeachment process of President Donald J. Trump is coming to an end with serious consequences for the country. Almost nine months after the controversial call between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelensky, summing up the political situation in the country is more complicated than ever. An investigation in the House of Representatives, dozens of witnesses and tons of documents seem to indicate only one thing: he did it. However, the consequences are not entirely clear. Attorney General William Barr's refusal to investigate Trump's alleged abuse of power by asking favors of the Ukrainian president in exchange for money approved by Congress forced the House of Representatives to conduct a more than two-month investigation triggered by an informant's report within the Intelligence Department. The findings? President Trump blocked congressionally-approved economic aid for Ukraine's fight

ENGLISH against the Russian invasion as a coercive measure to get Zelensky to announce investigations against the former vice president and presidential candidate, Joe Biden. Not content with that, Trump and his personal lawyer Rudolph Giuliani reportedly launched a smear campaign and put pressure on all officials involved in the affair, including the Ukrainian president's aides in Kyiv and long-time U.S. diplomats. We can repeat it a thousand times, turn the facts upside down, and yet the reality of national bipartisanship remains incomprehensible. Republican political tribalism, as well as the secrecy of a White House that refuses to collaborate, have made it seem as if it were a unilateral process against the president. It was precisely this that the Democratic managers dismantled during their opening arguments on the second day of the Senate impeachment process. "If impeachment and removal cannot hold him accountable, then he truly is above the law. We are nearly two-and-a-half centuries into this beautiful experiment of American democracy, but our future is not assured," said Rep. Adam Schiff during his closing argument. “As Benjamin Franklin departed the constitutional convention, he was asked, ‘What have we got, a republic or a monarchy?’ He responded simply, ‘A republic, if you can keep it.’ A fair trial, impartial consideration of all of the evidence against the president is how we keep our republic.” The Republican vote to acquit the president, then, has contradicted Franklin's response, in what seems like a symbolic coronation of a president with absolute powers.❚ THE EDITOR

n Tuesday, whispers of President Donald Trump's impeachment lingered in the halls of the Capitol as the country prepared to hear the State of the Union Address. Amid chants of "four more years," the Republican tribe welcomed a president found guilty in the House of Representatives of abusing his power and obstructing Congress, as Trump takes for granted the Republican-led Senate's likely decision to declare him "not guilty," despite the transparency of the evidence. “Three years ago, we launched the great American comeback,” Trump said in opening his speech. POLÍTICA ENGLISH is surging. And our country is thriving and highly respected again.” By overemphasizing unproven accomplishments, the president seemed to be speaking at a political rally, rather than actually talking about what is happening in the country. Between economic figures inherited from the Obama administration and an unemployment rate that is beginning to decline, the president made remarks like, "Under my administration, 7 million Americans have come off food stamps," when what really happened was that his administration tightened the rules on access to welfare. When talking about the immigrant community, Trump used one of his favorite campaign lines and blamed several cities around the country for "providing sanctuary to illegal criminal aliens.” "In sanctuary cities, local officials ordered police to release dangerous criminals to prey upon the public instead of handing them over to ICE to be safely removed," he said, misrepresenting the mechanisms of protection for undocumented immigrants implemented in those cities. Although several of his points were close to the truth — such as the success of the U.S.-Mexico/ Canada trade agreement, or the death of ISIS leader Al-Baghdadi — the national media's check of the facts in his speech determined that much of his statements were misleading or lacked context. “President Donald Trump made a striking claim Monday, insisting it was he who ensured that people with preexisting medical problems will always be covered by health insurance,” said the Associated Press. “He wasn’t. He also complained anew that Democrats didn’t allow him to send lawyers to the impeachment inquiry. The opposite is true: Democrats invited him to send lawyers to the inquiry and he said no.” No wonder, then, that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has again taken advantage of the focus of the cameras to make an unmistakable gesture. In front of the eyes of the entire Congress and millions of Americans, the Democratic representative from California tore her copy of the president's speech in two, later arguing that it was "a manifesto of mistruths.” The president, for his part, snuck in his own snub when he refused to shake the speaker's hand when he reached the podium. "We always extend a hand of friendship," said Pelosi when questioned by journalists about the presidential gesture. "If he rejects it, that’s up to him." According to Newsweek, Pelosi added that she hoped the president would not give another speech next year. "We’re expecting another president, nine months from today," she said.

ESPAÑOL do.

ome April 28, Philadelphia could have a new Democratic face leading the charge to Harrisburg in its 175th District. His name is Andre Del Valle, a 27-year-old Mayfair native and son of a Colombian mother and a Cuban father who is an Air Force veteran, and served in Vietnam. “They instilled in me a dedication to work hard,” said Del Valle of his parents. “Unfortunately, there is this narrative that people are in assistance programs because they wanna be.” According to his father, John Del Valle, it was not until high school that Andre discovered there was more out there other than “Payless Shoes and crispy O’s from ALDI.” “At an early age, he learned that there is no free ride, you have to work for what you want,” said the elder Del Valle. Little did Del Valle know that those life experiences would push him towards a political career that began as an intern for City Councilmember Maria Quiñones-Sánchez when he was only 21 years old. Fast forward six years and he is pulling an Ocasio-Cortez in a move to become a young representative. “Being young I don’t think is something that should be looked at as a deterrent. [I am here] because I have seen that there is a broken system across this Commonwealth,” said Del Valle. “I will let my work speak for itself.” After all, he’s been surpassing the expectations from an early age. At 14, Del Valle was already taking college-level classes at Community College of Philadelphia, and that opportunity opened the door for a summer program at Harvard University. In the four years after he graduated high school, Del Valle split time double-majoring in political science, government and Spanish, and working for both Tomas Sánchez’s campaign for the 2nd Senatorial District of Pennsylvania and Councilwoman María Quiñones-Sánchez office. But a political relationship does not imply total agreement, and Del Valle’s father says Quiñones-Sánchez and Del Valle have had their discrepancies over the years, but it’s nothing they haven’t been able to overcome. “In government, you have to know where your line is, but you also have to be willing to negotiate. The perfect can't be the enemy of the good,” he said. Del Valle’s platform is based on combating the opioid epidemic and gun violence, and dealing with the student debt drowning young Pennsylvanians. He now joins attorneys Vanessa McGrath andJeff Dempsey in the race for the 175th district. The seat was occupied by Michael O’Brien until 2018, when he died of a heart attack. Rep. Mary Isaacson has held the seat since. The primary to vote for the next rep coincides with Pennsylvania’s presidential primary, to be held on April 28, 2020.

A CONTROVERSIAL CALL

Efforts made by Democrats to break the secrecy in Washington and get to the bottom of President Trump’s actions to obstruct an investigation regarding Moscow’s participation in his presidential election were overshadowed by a whistleblower report made public in September 2019. It involved a CIA officer who brought an accusation before the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, Michael Atkinson, addressing concerns regarding Trump’s use of presidential powers in allegedly requesting foreign intervention in the 2020 presidential elections. On Sept. 20, The Washington Post reported that, during a phone call, Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky to investigate Hunt-

According to those familiar with the matter, Trump used the conversation on July 25 “to pressure the newly elected leader to carry out an investigation that Trump thought could produce potentially damaging information on one of his possible adversaries in 2020”. Trump “urged Zelenzky about eight times” to work with his personal lawyer, Rudolph Giuliani, to investigate the Bidens. Three days later, The Washington Post again published even

ENGLISH more concerning information. Trump ordered Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney to withhold $400 million in military support destined for Ukraine “at least one week before the call with Zelensky”. The funds had been allocated by Congress in the 2019 fiscal year budget to assist Ukraine with weapons, programs and other equipment to support the efforts of the Ukrainian military to combat threats from Moscow in its territory. On Sept. 24, the leading democratic intelligence committees in the House and the Senate announced that the whistleblower’s lawyer had been in contact to provide testimony and the accusation was formally submitted a day later, revealing that President Trump had abused the powers of his office for his personal benefit, endangering national security and involving White House officials in a coverup. According to the whistleblower’s report, officials such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Vice President Mike Pence’s national security advisor, Keith Kel-

WHEN THERE ARE NO OTHER OPTIONS

In its defense, the Trump administration was forced to publish a rough transcript of the call between the U.S. President and his Ukrainian counterpart. The President referred to it as “a perfect call,” but the transcript in fact confirmed many of the claims of the whistleblower. As of that moment, the administration said that Trump’s actions stemmed only from the White House’s attempts to combat corruption in Ukraine. Following a meeting at the Capitol, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi addressed the nation stating: “The actions taken to date by the president have seriously violated the Constitution”. Pelosi had previously been cautious about agreeing to a political trial investigation even despite the urgent requests from some House Democrats, but finally the evidence outweighed the rest and the Speaker had to announce the opening of a formal investigation.

CONTROVERSIAL TESTIMONY

The administration responded by prohibiting any member of the administration to comply with the order from the House, and refused to deliver the documents requested by the committees. Nonetheless, a handful of witnesses decided to defy the orders from the White House and made themselves present in the private hearings. The continuous claims by the government and Congress’ Republican wing regarding the allegedly “illegal” and closed-door investigation led to the decision to open to the public the testimonies that began on Nov. 13. After the revealing depositions from figures such as Marie Yovanovitch (former U.S .Ambassador to Ukraine), Kurt Volker (former U.S. Special Envoy to

ENGLISH gal process” and “witch hunt”. They demanded public hearings and championed the president’s right to defend himself — all of which the Democratic majority accepted. The Republican Party went so far as to endorse broadly dismantled conspiracy theories on Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections, desperately trying to find some lawfulness in Trump’s actions. Finally, the House approved both articles of impeachment to be sent to the Senate.

A DECISIVE STAGE

Despite the Republican Party’s political maneuvers to downplay and characterize the process, history will always remember Trump as the third president to be impeached in US history. What many questioned was the procedure to follow after a significant Democrat majority in the House approved the articles of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Pelosi waited to approve the articles to be sent to the majority Republican Senate, led by Senator Mitch McConnell. McConnell assured the media that he would be “working hand in hand with the White House” to prepare for the tria that was to be held once the articles were delivered. This statement implied that the Republican majority leader admitted his partiality on the matter, making the impeachment process a partisan struggle. Pelosi, for her part, after signing the decision, appointed the legislators who, once in the Senate, would have to “persuade 67 senators to condemn Trump and remove him from office under the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress”, as The Washington Post explained. The so-called “managers” elected by the Democrat leadership were: Rep. Adam B. Schiff, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and lead manager; Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Chairman of the

House Judiciary Committee; Rep. Zoe Lofgren, Chair of the Committee on House Administration; Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, House Democrat Caucus Chair; Rep. Val Demings, member of the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees; Rep. Jason Crow, member of the Armed Forces Committee; and Rep. Sylvia García, member of the Judiciary Committee. As expected, the process was deeply divided between the two sides: the Republican Party and President Trump’s lawyers, who again focused on criticizing the process launched by the House of Representatives; and the Democratic Party and its managers, who explained to the senators, and the whole country, what had happened. However, it was the dramatic speech by Rep. Adam Schiff, lead manager of the House of Representatives, that set the bar of that day. In a bit over two hours, Schiff weaved “historical references, political philosophy and strong statements” into a speech that depicted “President Trump’s attempts to undermine the rule of law and the US elections”, as characterized by The New York Times. “President Trump’s abuse of his powers undermine our free and fair elections and place our national security at risk”, Schiff

FEBRUARY 12 - 20, 2020

PORTADA

Since Nov. 13, a handful of government officials decided to put the country first. ENGLISH stated in the last 45 minutes of his opening statement. “If President Trump is not held to account, we send the message to future presidents, future Congresses and generations of Americans, that the personal interests of the president can fairly take precedence over that of the nation,” he stated.

AN ANTICIPATED VERDICT

Once the articles were sent to the Republican-majority Senate, many anticipated that the Republican Party would vote against the articles. That was, in fact, almost exactly what occurred. According to NBC News, all Democrats and Independents approved the first article of impeachment, including Utah Senator Mitt Romney, “the only Republican who voted to condemn Trump”. The second article of impeachment was unanimously rejected by the GOP. Although the 48 Senate Democrats — representing 18 million Americans more than the remaining 53 Senate Republicans — voted in favor of condemning the President, Republican tribalism proved mightier. With sufficient evidence, and considering the obstruction of the White House and the GOP when considering testimonies and classified documents, the undeniable conclusion of Donald Trump’s impeachment is, in fact, that he abused the powers of his office and placed his personal interests above those of the Constitution. In the words of Senator Romney, “The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust”. In his speech prior to voting, the Republican senator placed his oath before his decision and underlined the commitment to “exercise impartial justice”. “What he (Trump) did was not ‘perfect,’” Romney said. “No, it was a flagrant assault on our electoral

rights, our national security and our fundamental values. Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine.” The senator also explained the pressure that the members of his party are subjected to when it comes time to supporting the president, no matter the price. For Ohio Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown, his Republican colleagues’ decision to absolve the president was simply a reaction to fear. In an opinion column published in The New York Times, Brown mentioned the report by CBS News in which the administration warned senators that, if they voted against the president, their “heads will be on a pike”. “For the stay-in-office-at-allcost representatives and senators, fear is the motivator. They are afraid that Mr. Trump might give them a nickname like “Low Energy Jeb” and “Lyin’ Ted,” or that he might tweet about their disloyalty. Or – worst of all – that he might come to their state to campaign against them in the Republican primary.” For their part, the Democrat managers in charge of presenting the House’s case before the Senate also resorted to the written word to ensure that “the president will not be vindicated, and

neither will the Senate”. In a column for The Washington Post, Reps. Adam Schiff, Jerrold Nadler, Zoe Lofgren, Hakeem Jeffries, Val Demings, Sylvia Garcia and Jason Crow wrote their response to the decision of the Republicans, as well as their deep criticism and condemnation of the “unprecedented” decisions made by the GOP leadership. “The president’s defenders resorted to a radical theory that would validate his worst, most authoritarian instincts”, wrote the Democrats. “They argued that a president cannot abuse his power no matter how corrupt his conduct, if he believes it will benefit his reelection. The Founders would have been aghast at such a sweeping assertion of absolute power, completely at odds with our system of checks and balances.” “By denying the American people a fair trial, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (RKy.) also deprived the president of something that he desperately sought—exoneration”, they concluded. “There can be no exoneration without a legitimate trial. Out of fear of what they would learn, the Senate refused to hold one. The president will not be vindicated, and neither will the Senate, certainly not by history.

ong before he was named the new archbishop-elect of Philadelphia, Nelson J. Perez started his journey working in the Catholic Church in this very city. On May 20, 1989, Perez was ordained to the priesthood of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He spent the first four years after his ordination as a curate at Saint Ambrose Parish in Northeast Philadelphia. After other prominent roles that included the auxiliary bishop of the Rockville Centre in New York, and most recently, the bishop of Cleveland since September 2017, Perez will come full circle back to the City of Brotherly Love, more than 30 years later. “I’m back to the church, the archdiocese that formed me and ordained me, and walked with me,” Perez said during a press conference at the Philadelphia Archdiocesan headquarters last week. “I come back really with a great sense of gratitude and joy to serve alongside great bishops.”

ENGLISH As he succeeds the retiring Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput, Perez will be the city’s 14th bishop, 10th archbishop, and the first Latino to fill this role. With the growing Latino community in the city, it will be interesting to see how the Latino community will interact with the Catholic Church after Perez’s appointment. According to a 2010 U.S. Census report, 21% of the Hispanic population in the city were registered Catholics, totaling more than 61,000 people. Born in Miami to Cuban immigrants, Perez grew up in West New York, New Jersey. Before entering the priesthood, Perez had an active career in education. After graduating from Montclair State University with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, he taught at a Catholic elementary school in Puerto Rico, before later entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary and earning a master of divinity and master of arts in theology degrees. Perez is expected to officially begin his tenure as archbishop of Philadelphia on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

This and other stories were told by the German in her autobiography "Dear Fidel: My Life, My Love, My Betrayal" (1993), a long letter to the man she always considered the first love of her life. Lorenz and Castro had first met in Havana in 1959. She was 19 years old, and had arrived with her family on a luxury ship, the Berlin IV, of which her father was the captain. While they were berthed in the port, she remembered, the 33-year-old revolutionary came over smoking his mythical cigar and she invited him to visit the ship. "He asked me where my cabin was. Once there, after opening the door, he pushed me inside, drew me in and hugged me. That was my first kiss with a man," explained Marita in an interview with Paris Match.

as venido a matarme?”, le preguntó él. “Me preguntó dónde estaba mi camarote.

ENGLISH "They took him out of my belly," Lorenz accused the CIA of making her believe that she had lost the child she was expecting with Fidel Castro. He asked for her phone number in New York, where Lorenz had lived since the end of World War II. The tough young German had spent her childhood in a Nazi concentration camp since her father had been accused of espionage. When the war ended, the family fled to the United States and her parents started working for the CIA. What the young lady didn't expect was that Fidel would call her and more than that, beg to see her again, in Havana. The next meeting took place on May 20. From a suite at the Hilton, Marita wrote to her mother: "I'm fine, I have everything and I'm happy". Fidel was in the Sierra Madre, she added. He would return in the evening. When she woke up, she found the room flooded with flowers. It was seven happy months in Cuba. Having become his lover, Lorenz worked as the revolutionary leader's secretary. However, a strange and horrifying event caused her to break up with him and return to New York.

FIDEL'S "MISSING" SON

One day some commandos, allegedly from the CIA, kidnapped and drugged the young woman. When she woke up, they told her that she had aborted the son she was expecting from Fidel. "They took it out of my belly," she remembered. But the child was born, his name was Andres Vazquez, and he remained in Cuba with his father. She only met him again in 1981.

FEBRUARY 12 - 20, 2020

Before that time, many more things happened... "Whoever survived Bergen-Belsen can work for the CIA," said Frank Sturgis, an agent whom the Cuban leader recognized as the most dangerous American spy, who recruited Lorenz and trained her to kill Castro. According to documents owned by the FBI, both the CIA and the U.S. mafia -- which aspired to take control of illegal business on the island -- considered Marita Lorenz to be their secret weapon. Maybe she thought so, too. That winter of 1960, everything was about to happen. The poison was hidden in her luggage, and she wore a fake smile. "Hello, Fidel." "How are you, Fidel? It's been a long time..." But her strength didn’t last. "Are you going to kill me?" he asked. "Do it!" In the end, she didn't betray him: It was her heart that betrayed her. "They hated me, they blamed me," the old woman explained years before her death about the CIA's reaction when they found out Castro was still alive. After that incident, Martia continued to work as a spy. She fell in love again, with the former president of Venezuela, Marco Perez Jimenez, with whom she had a daughter, and they were both abandoned in the jungle. She also faced the CIA itself as a witness to the involvement of the CIA in JFK's murder, yet again at the center of conspiracy theories. "I guess I'm tough," she sighed shortly before her death. Marita Lorenz died of heart failure at the age of 80. Some say plainly that "her heart stopped".

¿O tal vez no tuvo otro remedio?

t's no coincidence that in the middle of an election year, the Super Bowl Halftime Show was Latino. Shakira represents the Latino who doesn't live in the United States, with a perfect Spanish straight from Barranquilla. JLo is a second-generation Latina raised in the Bronx, where many Latino communities live. Each represents a type of Latino in the world and in the U.S.: the migrant versus the one that remains, the diaspora versus the root. For both artists, the Latino essence, enjoyment and enthusiasm are celebrated. Shakira did a show based on her previous tour, where she pays tribute to the flavor and simplicity of her Caribbean life, versus a JLo, who left the Bronx, but carries it with her and understands what an American audience wants: her charismatic performance. A Super Bowl of women at the end of the day is reflective of the women who support families in Latin America, not because they're empowered women, but because the man leaves the family and the women have no choice but to become the all-powerful family axis. The event raises the morale of Latinos, not only with Shakira and JLo but also with guest appearances by J. Balvin and Bad Bunny. All of them are hard-working Latinos, in contrast to the lie that Trump has been saying about Latinos since his first election campaign. True, this Super Bowl represents that symbol: the empowered Latino who wants to work hard to belong to that powerful moral pool of Americans. But this symbol also serves as political leverage for the Democrats themselves to capture easy Latino votes that are only for show. The question remains the same: Will Latinos have more opportunities to fully belong in the United States as a dignified community, or will they continue to be beaten like the enslaved farmers of Michoacan who die at the hands of drug traffickers and the DEA to bring in the guacamole that Americans will eat while watching the Super Bowl LIV?
