A
ccording to a 2018 report by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, and as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, the number of hospitals and cutting-edge medical knowledge concentrated in Philadelphia does not equal adequate access to healthcare for all of the city’s residents. The report found that though some parts of the city fall in with the national average for the ratio of primary-care provider to residents - one primary-care provider for every 1,243 residents - other parts of the city have a ratio that falls well short of that. Areas in Northeast Philadelphia and Southwest Philadelphia can be federally classified as a “shortage area,” with an average of one provider for every 3,500 residents. And it isn’t just a matter of the number of physicians available to serve Philadelphia’s communities. Overall, the medical field still lags behind in accurately reflecting the U.S. population, as Blacks and Hispanics are underrepresented in medical schools and among practicing physicians.
ENGLISH In Philadelphia alone, though Latinos make up 15% of the city’s population, just 3% of doctors are Latino. That disparity in representation among physicians and researchers has a significant impact on the quality of care received by patients who are underrepresented minorities. And that results in systemic discrimination, says Dr. Carmen Guerra in our cover story on pg. 12. “If you don’t know have people who know what it's like to be an underrepresented minority in this country, then a lot of the healthcare issues and concerns that we are facing such as accessing the system, are not being addressed,” Guerra said. Fixing disparity in access comes down to not just having more underrepresented minorities attending medical school and working as physicians, but also ensuring that once in the medical profession, underrepresented minorities have the skills, knowledge, and support they need in order to “feel empowered to change the system,” she noted. Guerra and our other three Top Doctor Honorees this year show how having Latinos in medicine is not just a matter of representation; these doctors have gone beyond serving as role models and have brought their skills, talent, and knowledge to the table to actively work for a more just and fair healthcare system for Latino communities, Black communities, and other underserved populations in Philadelphia and beyond. ve by 10,000 votes. Two months later, on Jan. 6, Brooks was taking an oath on Inauguration Day as one of the four new faces on the City Council. But Brooks stood out, as the only one from all 17 members of the council to run as a third-party candidate, for the Working Families Party. “It is all very surreal, get back to me later and we will see,” said Kendra Brooks as she entered Office 411, her new chamber, to get ready for Inauguration Day. It was eight in the morning and just the beginning of a very long day for her. The first task at hand? Getting an ID. On she went, down to the “G” floor of City Hall.

As Brooks was ready to turn left, and disappear from his sight, he exclaimed: “Hey! It’s you! I knew I knew you from somewhere.” “Yeah,” she said, nodding her head and laughing warmly. The office where she was meant to get her ID awaited just ten steps away. A room divided into two unveiled in front of her, a desk in front of a table with files and a printer awaited on the left side; she took a seat on a white chair in front of a blue background. It is too early for the guy doing the process; he is courteous but short. She stood up and walked to the desk, where there was some paperwork to sign before getting the key to her new workplace for the next four years. “Here you go,” he said. She eagerly took the ID card. She hung it from her dress, picked up her coat and purse, and walked alongside her press contact Arielle Klagsbrun. “Hey, you made it!” exclaiming another guard as she was getting ready to walk out of City Hall. “Yeah, just got my credential,” said Brooks with content confidence as she walked towards Market Street to catch the Broad Street Line that would take her to the MET Philadelphia. t's sad and unfortunate, but hardly surprising, that the new year had started with yet another horror show of the kind the nation and the world look at in disbelief. It’s not surprising because we are living in Trump’s corrupt, greedy, inept and racist world, a veritable nightmare of intolerance and abuse. The crime of keeping children imprisoned for trying to save their lives fleeing violence and poverty in their Central American countries, violence and poverty which were created in good measure by Washington’s policies, far from ending is growing and becoming even more aggressive. Hard as it would be to believe under any other government, despite the deaths of two children a few months ago, Trump and his gang of crooks, liars and bigots are opening a

ENGLISH new mass facility in Carrizo Springs, Texas, for migrant children and, as has been reported, are planning to hold hundreds more kids on three military bases – Army and Air Force bases in Georgia, Montana and Oklahoma, adding up to 3,000 new beds. As if to show again that their cruelty has no limits, Trump and his people are reducing or even eliminating paying for recreation, English-language courses and legal services for the more than 13,200 migrant toddlers, school-age children and teens in its custody, in violation of a legal settlement known as the Flores agreement. “Last week, attorneys filed a motion claiming that the government also was violating the decades-old settlement by keeping kids at Homestead (an already existing facility if Florida) for months in some cases, instead of releasing them within 20 days,” AP reported. The cutting of such services which are routinely provided to adult prisoners, has only one purpose: to punish the children. “Cancelling of these services will inflict further harm on children, many of whom continue to languish for months without being placed safely and expeditiously into a sponsor’s care. That is not only unacceptable, it could be in violation of the law,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat who chairs the House Appropriations subcommittee with oversight on the agency’s budget. Trump’s world. Let’s vote him out. ❚

n a race for the Democratic nomination that no longer includes any candidates of color, the votes of communities of color remain the jewel in the crown. Over the past few months, we have seen candidates like Julian Castro, Corey Booker and Kamala Harris pull out of the race due to a combination of lack of funds and low approval in the polls, despite the fact that all three represent sectors of the population whose vote could radically change the outcome of the election this November. However, a new poll shows how African-American voters have their eye on only one candidate, and with an overwhelming majority: former Vice President Joe Biden.

ENGLISH Figures released by the Washington Post/IPSO poll last week show Biden leading by a significant 48%, followed closely by Senator Bernie Sanders with 20%. They are the only two candidates with double-digit approval, followed by Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren (9%), former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (4%) and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg with only 2%. “I think neither Warren nor Sanders and certainly not Pete Buttigieg have ever had a breakthrough with African American voters sufficient to eliminate Biden’s advantage,” Republican strategist Rick Wilson told the Guardian in an interview conducted before the Post poll was published. “And also, Biden’s got the secret weapon. If Barack Obama is free to get out there [for him] and do the campaigning that only he can do in American political life, I think that would be a meaningful lift.” The respondents are registered Democratic voters nationwide, and their answers underscore the importance of knowing the true interests of the voters before taking them for granted. The reason behind the African-American community's support for the former vice president would have to do, on the other

hand, with their profound rejection of the Trump Administration's management. Another poll also conducted by the Washington Post/IPSOS showed how a large majority of African Americans in the country think that Trump is racist. "More than 8 in 10 black Americans say they believe Trump is a racist and that he has made racism a bigger problem in the country," according to an analysis by Cleve R. Wootson Jr., Vanessa Williams, Dan Balz and Scott Clement. And nine out of 10 disapprove of his overall job performance. This would be the argument why many prefer a person who, even if he doesn't completely disassociate himself from the White Establishment, does have a better chance in the long run of beating Trump. Alabama representative Terri Sewell seems to agree. Last Friday, and as reported by Politico, Sewell joined 10 other black members of Congress in giving their support to the Biden campaign, just days before the Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “There’s no bigger threat to the civil rights and voting rights that are so important to my district than Donald Trump,” Sewell said. “Coupled with [Biden’s] vast experience is also his ability to cross the aisle to unite folks, and I think that that makes him the best candidate, in my opinion, to take on and beat Donald Trump in November.” ❚

f there’s one thing you can say about Sharmain Matlock-Turner, it’s that she has a fearless determination to make a positive impact. Originally from just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, Matlock-Turner moved to Philadelphia with her mother as a child after her parents’ divorce, to join relatives who were already living in the city. “I think it is a place where though certainly challenging for people who don’t have a lot of means, it is a place that works to try to drive change in a positive way,” Matlock-Turner said of Philadelphia. Quite fittingly, Matlock-Turner helps lead the charge in driving positive change across the city’s urban communities.
A COMMUNITY WORKER AT EVERY LEVEL
It’s always been clear to Matlock-Turner the type of work she wanted to do. “My real passion was always being a part of community, and being a community activist,” she said. In March 1999, Matlock-Turner was named the President & CEO of the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC), the fourth in the organization’s history, and the first woman to hold the title. “Women haven't always been as seriously considered for leadership roles as we should, and […] to ultimately be chosen to lead [the Urban Affairs Coalition] was exciting, and also a little scary,” she said.

i hay algo por lo que se destaca Sharmain Matlock-Turner, es por su determinación sin reparos de generar impactos positivos. Oriunda de las afueras de Charlottesville, Virginia, Matlock-Turner se mudó junto con su madre a vivir con unos parientes que ya vivían en Filadelfia, después del divorcio de sus padres, cuando era niña. “Creo que es un lugar que a pesar de ser un desafío para los que no tienen muchos medios, trabaja por tratar de lograr cambios positivos”, dijo Matlock-Turner al referirse a Filadelfia. The Urban Affairs Coalition features many programs and initiatives that help support and fulfill the coalition’s four main priorities. Made up of more than 80 partners, the UAC is filled with strong grassroots leaders who work toward sustainable change that reflect the concerns and visions of the communities. Throughout her 20 years with the coalition, Matlock-Turner said she’s proud of the fact that she gets to help connect people to opportunities that can help them fulfill their goals and aspirations. “We have now over 80 programs and projects that are a part of the coalition family. When I got here, there were about 20.” “To me, it reinforces the idea that everybody can do something to change the world,” she added.

Throughout her career, she’s made sure to work with people from all backgrounds, learn from those people, and create partnerships that makes all parties involved better. Conducive to the impact she’s helped make with her platform as president and CEO of the UAC, she never forgets who she is at the core. “I’m just like a girl from West Philly who really very much cares about community,” she reflected. While she’s been honored and received numerous awards over the years, Matlock-Turner says the work always comes first. “If people say anything about me, I hope they say that I did the right things for the right reasons, that I worked really hard and that I created opportunities for others to shine and to grow.” ❚ JANUARY 22 - 29, 2020

or Dr. Christian Bermudez, the path to a career in medicine seemed natural from an early age. Born to two Chilean doctors training in Washington, D.C., Bermudez grew up in an environment where he heard the medical jargon found in laboratories and operating rooms within his own kitchen and living room. The young Bermudez also found himself inspired by the benefits his parents’ work created for their home city of Concepción, Chile. His dad was a cardiologist on the cutting edge of Chile’s heart research and care, opening southern Chile’s first Intensive Care Unit for cardiology in Concepción, and his mom was an immunologist. Despite their decorated medical careers, Bermudez said they never pressured him to follow in their footsteps. Instead, what Bermudez learned from them was work ethic. “My father was a very methodical man,” he said. “He would wake up every morning and go out at the same time every day and go to study for an hour before receiving patients.” That process translated to Bermudez’s school work, and he was the top of his high school’s graduating class. It left the then-16-year-old a choice between further study in law or medicine. “I thought I could make a better contribution as a doctor,” he said. In the footsteps of his father, Bermudez decided to become a cardiologist. He started his training at home in Concepción, but moved north to Santiago for his surgeon residency. After six years in Santiago, Bermudez made the jump to the U.S., accepting a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. While the Mayo Clinic offered an important history and mentorship, Bermudez’s next stop at the University of Pittsburgh showed him the importance of innovation. When he got to Pitt, it was one of the nation’s leading centers for heart, lung and liver transplants. From Pittsburgh and with transplantation as his specialty, Bermudez moved across Pennsylvania to the UPenn to become Director of Thoracic Transplantation and the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation and ECMO. In that position, UPenn has become a world leader in both types of transplantation — something Bermudez says is his proudest achievement. ❚

ara el Dr. Christian Bermúdez, el trayecto hacia una carrera en medicina, desde una edad muy temprana, parecía natural. Nacido de dos padres médicos chilenos que hacían su capacitación en Washington, D.C., Bermudez creció en un ambiente en el que escuchó la jerga médica que habita en los laboratorios y salas quirúrgicas en su propia cocina y sala familiar. El joven Bermúdez también se encontró inspirado por los beneficios creados por el trabajo de sus padres en su ciudad natal de Concepción, Chile. Su padre era un cardiólogo a la vanguardia en el campo de la investigación y atención cardíaca quien abrió la primera Unidad de cuidados intensivos para cardiología, en el sur de Chile, en Concepción, y su madre era inmonóloga. A pesar de sus prestigiosas carreras médicas, Bermudez dijo que nunca lo presionaron a seguir sus pasos. En vez, lo que Bermudez aprendió de ellos fue su ética laboral. “Mi padre fue un hombre muy metódico”, dijo. “Se despertaba cada mañana y salía a la misma hora, cada día, para dirigirse a estudiar durante una hora antes de recibir a sus pacientes”. El proceso se trasladó a los estudios escolares de Bermúdez, y le dejó al entonces joven de 16 años de edad la oportunidad de elegir entre estudios universitarios en las carreras de derecho o medicina. “Pensé que podría contribuir más como médico”, dijo. Siguiendo los pasos de su padre, Bermudez decidió convertirse en cardiólogo. Empezó su capacitación en casa, en Concepción, pero luego se trasladó al norte, a Santiago, para realizar su residencia como cirujano. Luego de su estadía de seis años en Santiago, Bermudez hizo el salto a los EE. UU.al aceptar realizar un período de capacitación médica en la Mayo Clinic en Rochester, Minnesota. Aunque la Mayo Clínic ofrecía una historia y enseñanza significativas, la siguiente parada de Bermúdez en la University of Pittsburgh le mostró la importancia de la innovación. Cuando llegó a Pitt, era uno de los centros líderes de la nación en trasplantes de corazón, pulmones e hígado. atalia Ortiz-Torrent’s childhood in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, was filled with closeness, familiarity and generosity. Her father was the owner of a department store in their hometown of Cayey. “I practically grew up in that business,” said Ortiz-Torrent, noting that oftentimes in addition to raising her and her younger sister at home, her mother would also work in the store. Being around the business proved to be very valuable for the young Ortiz-Torrent. “I learned the value of money, the value of responsibility... and the value of helping others,” she said. Those values, coupled with a love for science, would soon become the avenue to her current career path in the medical profession. Originally, Ortiz-Torrent studied chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce as a safer route than medical school, with the goal of becoming a licensed chemist. However, she later learned that she was accepted into the Ponce School of Medicine, one of three medical schools in Puerto Rico that were LCME accredited, shortly before passing the board exams and earning her license to become a licensed chemist. Upon graduating from the Ponce School of Medicine, Ortiz-Torrent moved to the U.S. mainland and began training at the Temple University Psychiatry Department for four years, later transitioning into her current area of expertise in consultation and liaison psychiatry in 2005. Ortiz-Torrent said she decided to enter into the psychiatric field during rotations as a thirdyear medical student. “When I sat down and started talking to patients, listening to their stories, helping them and learning about the root of their problems, and how the behaviors or emotions were affecting their medical illnesses, and how the medical conditions affected their behaviors…I said, ‘Ok, this is perfect. This is what I want to do,’” Ortiz-Torrent recalled. Her area of consultation and liaison psychiatry analyzes the interface between how the brain, mind, spirit, culture and psychology interact amongst each other. In addition to her role at Temple University Hospital, Ortiz-Torrent is very active in volunteering and philanthropic endeavors. This is most highlighted in her role as president of SILAMP (the Society of Ibero-Latin American Medical Professionals). In both roles, Ortiz-Torrent says the most gratifying part is the ability to “make a difference.” “In psychiatry, trust is not easy to gain all the time, but there’s ways in which that can be accomplished,” she said about her role at Temple Hospital. ❚

Su padre era el propietario de un gran almacén en su pueblo natal de Cayey. “Crecí, prácticamente, en ese negocio”, dijo Ortiz-Torrent, agregando que con frecuencia, además de encargarse de su crianza y la de su hermana menor, en casa, su madre también trabajaba en el almacén. Estar cerca del negocio probó ser muy valioso para la joven Ortiz-Torrent. “Aprendí sobre el valor del dinero, el valor de la responsabilidad… y el valor de ayudar a otros”, dijo. Esos valores, unidos a su pasión por la ciencia, pronto se convertirían en el camino hacia su actual trayecto profesional en la medicina. Al inicio, Ortiz-Torrent estudió química en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Ponce. Más tarde, sin embargo, se enteró que había sido aceptada en la Escuela de Medicina de Ponce, una de las tres escuelas de medicina en Puerto Rico que contaban con acreditación LCME, justo después de haber aprobado sus exámenes privados y obtener su licencia para convertirse en química autorizada. Al graduarse de la Escuela de Medicina de Ponce, Ortíz-Torrent se trasladó al territorio continental estadounidense y empezó su capacitación en el Departamento de psiquiatría de la Temple University, durante cuatro años; más tarde --en 2005-- hizo la transición a su actual área de especialización en psiquiatría de enlace y consulta. Ortiz-Torrent dijo que se decidió por el área de psiquiatría durante sus rotaciones como estudiante de tercer año de medicina. “Al sentarme y conversar con los pacientes, al escuchar sus historias; ayudarlos y aprender sobre la raíz de sus problemas, y cómo sus conductas o emociones afectaban sus enfermedades médicas, y cómo las condiciones médicas afectaban sus conductas… dije, ‘Muy bien, esto es perfecto. Esto es lo que quiero hacer’”, recordó Ortiz-Torrent. Su área de psiquiatría de enlace y consulta analiza la interconexión entre cómo el cerebro, la mente, el espíritu, la cultura y la psicología interactúan entre sí. Además de su puesto en el Temple University Hospital, Ortiz-Torrent es muy activa en el área de voluntariado e iniciativas filantrópicas. Esto se destaca sobre todo en su puesto como Presidente de SILAMP (siglas en inglés de la Sociedad de profesionales médicos ibero y latinoamericanos).. hen Carmen Guerra started college at NYU, she found love — and along with it, the support which helped her consider a career in medicine. She met her now-husband, Dilip, in her first week of college. While he had grown up knowing he wanted to be a doctor, wanting to emulate the work of his own father, a practicing cardiologist, Guerra did not have her first interaction with the healthcare system until she was preparing to start medical school, and needed a doctor to provide necessary vaccination information for enrollment purposes. Guerra’s parents, who immigrated from Honduras to New York City when Guerra was just three years old, did not have health insurance through the multiple jobs they worked to support their family. “There were so many barriers along the way that when you think about it no surprise that I didn’t make that decision to be a doctor until it was almost too late,” Guerra said, as she described the “slow discovery” which happened in her first two years of classes at NYU. Despite her late start on the pre-med track, Guerra graduated on time, got accepted to several medical schools, and chose to attend University of Rochester. As a general internist, researcher, and professor, Guerra has made it part of her mission to ensure that more people, especially underrepresented minorities, have improved access to both the medical profession and the healthcare system as a whole. When she first started practicing in Philadelphia, Guerra noticed that her West Philadelphia patients, the majority of whom were Black, were often diagnosed with cancer at later stages than patients from other areas of the city that were predominantly white. The discrepancy was one that Guerra found “disturbing and troubling,” and it led her to think about what systemic factors were impeding people’s access to the healthcare system. Inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. Harold Freedman on navigation systems, Guerra won support and seed funding from an anonymous donor to launch a navigation system aimed at helping West Philadelphia patients undergo colon cancer screening and receive colonoscopies in 2011. After three years, the evidence was clear on the importance of the program: About 42% of the patients tested had pre-cancerous polyps, which doctors were then able to remove in order to prevent cancer. The success of this program inspired Guerra to work in implementing another navigation system at UPenn focused on breast and cervical cancer screening. In all, Guerra estimates that close to 3,000 people so far have been screened through the programs she’s led, and it approaches 50 people who had cancer and didn’t know it who were then able to get care via the programs and connections to Penn Medicine’s world-class Abramson Cancer Center. ❚

l iniciar sus estudios universitarios en NYU, Carmen Guerra descubrió el amor --y con este, el apoyo que la ayudó a plantearse una carrera en medicina. Conoció a su ahora esposo, Dilip, durante su primera semana de universidad. Aunque él sabía desde joven que quería ser médico, que quería emular el trabajo que realizaba su padre, un cardiólogo practicante, Guerra no tuvo su primer contacto con el sistema de atención médica hasta que se preparaba para empezar la escuela de medicina, y necesitaba de un médico para que le otorgara la información necesaria sobre vacunaciones fines de registro. Los padres de Guerra, quienes emigraron a la ciudad de Nueva York de Honduras cuando ella tenía apenas tres años, no contaban con seguro médico a través de ninguno de los trabajos múltiples que realizaban para mantener a su familia. “Habían tantas barreras en el camino que, al reflexionar en ello, no fue sorprendente que no haya tomado la decisión de ser médico hasta que casi era demasiado tarde”, dijo Guerra al describir “el descubrimiento lento” que ocurrió durante sus primeros dos años de clases en NYU. Cuando empezó sus prácticas, por primera vez, en Filadelfia, Guerra observó que sus pacientes del occidente de Filadelfia, en su mayoría afroamericanos, con frecuencia eran diagnosticados con cáncer en etapas más avanzadas que los pacientes de otras áreas de la ciudad que eran, predominantemente, blancos. r. Victor Navarro is a Pennsylvania native, raised by a Mexican father and an American mother. As the son and grandson of immigrants, he grew up watching his father and maternal grandfather work hard in the steel mills at Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, while his mother and grandmother worked as hairdressers. Over time his family efforts paid off: Navarro´s father started his own construction business, and through it, he was able to help many people move from Mexico with their families to the United States. Likewise, his mother and grandmother went on to build a chain of beauty salons in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “That really was a drive [for me] to contribute as much as my parents did in their fields,” Navarro said, adding it also “got [him] interested in medicine.” He received his medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine and continued on with his residency in Internal Medicine at Temple University. Navarro’s effort paid off when he was admitted to a Yale-New Haven Hospital Fellowship in the gastroenterology field, where he learned to be a transplant doctor and discovered his passion for a much more “multidisciplinary” organ, the liver. After eight years in Connecticut, he moved to Philadelphia to work at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery and Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. It was an opportunity that allowed him to “ run large transplant programs...and also participate in education and research.” Twenty-five years later, he does not regret choosing the path of the liver. His years in practice and his multicultural upbringing allowed him to expand the care for his patients through different barriers. “I may not be perfectly fluent in Spanish, but I can communicate with patients,” he explained. “I think that having a Latin background allows me to open people's perspectives and be more open to hearing about their diseases.” At the end of the day, for him, listening to what patients have to say and making them feel cared for is the best way to “assemble the facts into a story that is relevant to the patient.” But even the ones who spend their lives taking care of others need a support system. “It's important that any physician has family support who understands what the demands are on their time and other emotions. It's really my family, especially my wife, a nurse, who has been patient and sympathetic to what I do. That has really been the most important thing.” ❚

Pero hasta quienes pasan sus vidas cuidando de otros necesitan un sistema de apoyo. “Es importante que cualquier médico cuente con el apoyo de la familia que entienda sobre las demandas de su tiempo y otras emociones. Es realmente mi familia, mi esposa --enfermera-- en especial, que ha sido paciente y comprensiva respecto a lo que hago. Eso ha sido, en realidad, lo más importante”. ❚

And this should not surprise us, taking into account the great medical advances made by Cuban professionals in the treatment of various types of cancer. This is what we'll be able to witness in "Cuba's Cancer Hope," a documentary by Llew Smith that will be released next April by PBS and that sheds light on CimaVax, a revolutionary treatment against lung cancer that prolongs the life of patients in very advanced stages and that the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Habana has taken more than twenty years to develop.

n Aldama, Chiapas, a region of Mexico marked by economic and gender inequality, men work in the fields while women weave, according to ancient customs. However, for Alberto López Gómez, 31, born into a Tzotzil family, it was clear from childhood that he wanted to be a weaver. "A young man who is working at a loom is frowned upon. I thought things over and told my mother that I wanted to learn how to weave, and my mother said, 'You know that men work in the fields.'" "But I answered that I had the right to learn how to weave," he says in an interview with the German Network for Human Rights in Mexico, which put the young designer on the map. Four years after he started knitting with his sisters, the Chiapas man, who had to face harsh criticisms for being a weaver, runs his own workshop where 150 Tzotzil women knit. "I was hiding within four walls, working in my house," he says, "people were whispering at my walk, but we are breaking the chain." The designs of his 'Huipiles' (from the Nahuatl word 'huipilli'), blouses adorned with symbols of the cosmos, family and nature that take about five months to produce following a traditional procedure, have conquered the gatekeepers of American fashion. Now, he will present his collection "K'uxul Pok" at the 2020 New York Fashion Week. The art and history of this young, indigenous designer and weaver have caused such a stir that even the prestigious Harvard University in Boston has invited him to exhibit his work. We'll have to wait until Feb. 6 to see the essence of Mayan spirituality woven into a "huipil" on a catwalk. In the meantime, Alberto, who has nothing to stop him - least of all a stereotype - has set himself other challenges: to create a museum of textile designs in his native region of Aldama to showcase his work and that of his companions, and to write a memoir about the difficult journey he has made, which he hopes will inspire other young men in his community to become weavers. "As indigenous people, we don't know about our rights," says the Chiapas artist. "Machismo has beaten us," he adds. Yet stories like his weave a much more egalitarian future and build bridges between tradition and modernity. ❚

hey are, in a way, also “undocumented”. They are not part of the annual list of physicians published by traditional media, their accomplishments go unrecognized by that same mainstream media, and in their institutions, where they have worked for decades, they are yet to be fully recognized as real assets to the organizations. We know there are medical doctors of Latino descent around because, in the past, the marketing departments of some of our health institutions put their faces and names on billboards to advertise the names of their organizations. So we decided to look for them. Two years ago, we decided to send letters to the CEOs of over 50 health institutions in our region asking them to nominate their own for an annual recognition of those professionals. We only got replies from a dozen of them. We looked further and we identified a dozen more and, with them, we hosted the first annual recognition event, held in January of 2019. This year, we took a step further and we opened a public nomination process online that landed 30 more names. Our annual list now includes over 50 doctors who work primarily in the Philadelphia region and enrich with their presence the diversity of our health care organizations. The list is still incomplete, but the picture of who our doctors are has finally started to emerge with the faces of these outstanding professionals of the most diverse backgrounds. We plan to continue building that list with your help, and the help of the health care institutions where they work. We believe it is about time we know who our doctors are and we learn about the contributions they make to keep Philadelphia as a top healthcare destination with worldwide appeal.❚

llos también, de alguna manera, “indocumentados” Nunca llegan a hacer parte de la lista de médicos que anualmente publican los medios tradicionales, sus logros casi nunca son reconocidos por esos mismos medios, y en sus instituciones, donde han trabajado por décadas, ellos aún no han sido reconocidos como verdaderos patrimonio de sus organizaciones. Sabemos que hay doctores latinos porque, en el pasado, los departamentos de mercadeo de nuestras instituciones de salud puso sus nombres y sus rostros en vallas publicitarias que publicitaron los nombres de esas organizaciones. Así que decidimos empezar a buscarlos. Dos años atrás, decidimos enviar cartas a los CEOs de más de 50 instituciones de salud de nuestra región solicitando nominaciones de sus propios médicos para este debido reconocimiento de estos profesionales. Recibimos respuestas de solo una docena de ellos. Miramos más allá y encontramos una docenas más y, con todos ellos, hicimos el primer reconocimiento anual, organizado en el mes de enero del 2019. Este año, tomamos un paso adicionales y decidimos abrir una nominación pública en línea que arrojó 30 nombres más. Nuestra lista anual ahora incluye más de 50 profesionales de la salud que trabajan primariamente en la región de Philadelphia y que enriquecen con su presencia la diversidad nuestras instituciones de salud.
