I
n our cover story this week, Adria Córdova talks about the role that the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) played in her life as a young professional - one who had to uproot herself twice, first from her native New Mexico to Minneapolis, MN, and after that, to Philadelphia, PA, in order to pursue the opportunities that would allow her to move forward in her career. Increasingly, millenials are moving to pursue career opportunities. But that can take a toll. That’s where professional networks like ALPFA come in - especially for millenials from communities of color who are fighting against discrimination in the business world. For many, the support and “home away from home” feeling that Córdova speaks to in the cover story are a reason why professional groups can be helpful in navigating, confronting, and surviving the barriers and challenges of working in a demanding profession which continues to lack inclusivity. And it’s not just in the corporate world. Newsrooms and media organizations across the country continue to face a huge diversity problem - a 2018 report from the American Society of News Editors found that people

ENGLISH of color comprise just 22.6 percent of those working in the 293 news organizations across the country who opted to participate in the survey. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) was first founded in 1984 with the purpose of cultivating “recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry.” With more than 2,000 members nationwide, NAHJ has professional chapters in close to 20 cities, in addition to student chapters established on college campuses throughout the country. Philadelphia has for a long time not had a chapter, but this year that’s about to change. NAHJ Philly will host its first reception/mixer on Jan. 22, from 6 - 9 p.m., at The Pipeline on 30 S. 15th Street (15th floor). Anyone who is interested in attending can RSVP by Jan. 15 by emailing NAHJPhilly@gmail.com. The fact that there will now be a Philadelphia chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists is significant, says Joy Soto, Community Voices and Engagement Fellow at WHYY and board member of the newly-formed NAHJ Philly. Soto noted “how important it is for Latino-focused professional groups, specifically in media, to diversify the field and to be a resource for each other.” “Each of us realize how much it’s needed,” she added, while expressing her hope that the chapter will help address the void of resources for Latino professionals in media. For anyone who is interested in joining but won’t be able to make it to the event on Jan. 22, the NAHJ Philly board members encourage any young professionals in journalism or students interested in participating to contact them at that email address, or via their Facebook (NAHJ Philadelphia Chapter) and Twitter (@NahjPhilly) accounts.❚ THE EDITOR

don’t know that my conditions aren’t ideal until someone shows me what it’s supposed to look like.” These are the words that new, atlarge Councilmember Isaiah Thomas shared with AL DÍA when discussing the dire situations many Philadelphia youth face in their schools and neighborhoods across the city. Specifically, his answer came in response to a question about the recent discovery of asbestos in Franklin Learning Center, which shuttered the school. As someone who is also heavily involved in youth sports in the city, Thomas admits that deteriorating and dangerous school building conditions are “no secret” for those who are in schools on a regular basis.

ENGLISH seen in the way many black and brown youth interact with police. On his visit to AL DÍA on Dec. 18, Thomas cited his own experience as a black man being racially profiled by police “at least three times” in 2019. He can also remember being “aggressively” stopped and frisked by police growing up. “I think when you’re born and raised in the city of Philadelphia, specifically men of color, we begin to think that’s the norm. That’s just how things are,” said Thomas. “And I just don’t think that should be.”
BREAKING WITH THE STATUS QUO
When he’s sworn in on Jan. 6, Thomas vowed to hit the ground
running with a youth-centered agenda centered on education. But it’s not education in the sense of traditional school, with books and homework. Thomas was quick to point out that more could be done to show options in addition to college for those still in high school classrooms. For one, to help ease the distrust between the police and youth, Thomas supports promoting the police department as a viable work option for high school seniors upon graduation. “The only way we’re going to change the way police perceive people, is if those police are the same people from those neighborhoods,” said Thomas. Thomas also wants to provide more mandatory civics, financial literacy, media literacy and tech classes for high school seniors. The goal is to create a new norm for Philly youth that places value on civic engagement and entrepreneurship from an early age. ❚

n January 6, Three Kings Day, I was about to start writing my weekly column for Al Día News, when I stumbled on Facebook with this reflection on that tradition so dear to the children of our countries. It is so beautiful that I felt the desire, rather the need, to share it with my readers, although I am afraid that my translation from Spanish to English does not capture Iñaki Rodeño’s words in all their beauty. For that, I apologize to him and to my English-speaking readers. Rodeño, its author, a university professor from Bilbao, Spain, is someone whom I appreciate and admire. Here are his words: “Once I saw the Magi. There were not three, they were two and they were the best magicians I saw in my life. They managed to always

put something in the shoes, small, a little something. Even if there was nothing, they managed to get what for us was everything. I never saw the third one, but they surely left him taking care of the camels. Never, I will never forget the two kings I saw. Surely you also saw them and know who they are and know that they are more magicians than kings. If you stopped believing, if tonight you don't put out your shoes, grass, or water, come closer to your kings, kiss them on the forehead (you know you have them close) and, those who don't have them with you, know that from a beautiful sky they keep on traveling to continue delivering illusions and smiles ... In a message on Twitter, the former Housing Secretary and mayor of San Antonio announced "with deep gratitude to all of our supporters" that he is suspending his campaign for the presidency.

I hope you’ll join me in this fight.” A few months ago, Castro announced that his campaign was at risk of ending due to a lack of funds, and his position in the polls prevented him from qualifying for the next Democratic debates. However, as politics teaches us in terms of paradoxes, Castro was one of the few candidates of color in the primaries, representing the largest ethnic minority in the country today. That is why his campaign was inaugurated with a trip to Puerto Rico, and with the unveiling of his comprehensive immigration proposal. Castro spoke from his experience as a second-generation immigrant, and proposed a system "where cruelty is not the solution.” Castro traveled almost throughout the entire country with his plan, which included the disabled, immigrants and people of color, using dignity as a banner. Even though he was one of the candidates with a solid, feasible and inclusive program that left no community behind, Castro was devoured by the Democratic system, where it seems that being male and white is still the preferred route for those who don’t understand that the country is ready to see a change. His struggle, however, has left a deep mark on the country, after his participation in the national debate put on the table the names of victims of police violence, racial inequality and lack of representation in the political system. “I’m gonna tell the truth. It’s time for the Democratic Party to change the way that we do our presidential nominating process," Castro said in his farewell video. " I’m so proud of the campaign we’ve run together. We’ve shaped the conversation on so many important issues in this race, stood up for the most vulnerable people, and given a voice to those who are often forgotten.” And the country won't forget that. ❚

Sin embargo, y como bien nos enseña la política en cuanto a paradojas, Castro fue uno de los pocos candidatos de color en las primarias, representando a la minoría étnica más fuerte en el país hoy en día. Fue por ello que su campaña fue inaugurada con un viaje a Puerto Rico, y con el develamiento de su propuesta de inmigración comprehensiva, hablando siempre desde su experiencia como segunda generación de inmigrantes, y que planteaba un sistema “donde la crueldad no sea la solución”. Castro recorrió casi todo el país con su plan, que incluía a discapacitados, inmigrantes y personas de color, utilizando la dignidad como estandarte. Aún siendo uno de los candidatos con un programa sólido, factible e inclusivo, que no dejó de lado a ninguna comunidad, Castro se vio devorado por el sistema demócrata, donde pareciera que ser hombre y blanco sigue siendo la ruta preferida por los que no entienden que el país está listo para ver un cambio. t was October 29, 2012. Jacqueline Capriles, a software developer and Sunset Park, Brooklyn, native, had planned to sell mobile apps at a business conference in Phoenix, AZ. That same day, Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, causing all flights to be cancelled. The following day, Ana Diaz, an electrician and also a Sunset Park resident, realized her phone was ringing nonstop. It was people in need of an electrician in the aftermath of the hurricane. To take on the task of rebuilding her community, Diaz needed employees, and Capriles decided to help out. From there, the two entrepreneurs created Diaz Electric of New York, Inc., an electrical contracting firm based in Brooklyn.
BEGINNINGS AT SUNSET PARK
For many residents of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, community is important— and that sense of unity and togetherness is what has helped drive the success of Diaz Electric. Both Diaz and Capriles made the intentional decision to stay in the community that raised them, and help provide valuable opportunities for its residents. For Capriles, the fact that she grew up there, and has built relationships and started her family there, holds a lot of sentimental value. “I want to remain in this community, and I want to be able to provide the support to help this community thrive,” she said. For Diaz, she has always been impressed with the diversity, warmth and camaraderie of the Sunset Park community. “Having the sense of community here through other people is what really keeps me attached to Sunset Park,” she said. ❚

or nearly the first two decades of her life, Adria Córdova lived in the small, rural town of Questa, located in northern New Mexico. “I like to say that I graduated in a class of 32 to give people context to just how small the town really is,” she said during an interview with AL DÍA on Nov. 19. Being from such a small town, combined with growing up in a close, tight-knit Latino household, Córdova quickly learned the value and importance of family. That experience taught Córdova some very valuable lessons — lessons that have stuck with her to this day. “It’s kind of what has shaped me to become who I am today,” she said. “The values that I learned from living in a small community and receiving the support from not only my family but community members, is so powerful, and it’s something I never forget.” Córdova stayed in Questa until she moved away to college at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, the state’s largest city. Her time in college would prove to be the catalyst for the next important chapter in her life. It was there that she learned about the oldest Latino professional organization in the United States, the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA).

urante casi las primeras dos décadas de su vida, Adria Córdova vivió en el pequeño pueblo rural de Questa, situado en la parte norte de Nuevo México. “Me gusta decir que me gradué en una promoción de 32 personas para que las personas entiendan cuán pequeño el pueblo era en realidad”, dice durante una entrevista con AL DÍA sostenida el 19 de noviembre. ENGLISH At the behest of her accounting professor at the time, Córdova accepted an offer to take a trip to Boston, where she met the chapter leader there. That experience opened her eyes to an entirely new world, as she saw the impact that ALPFA could potentially have for her. Soon thereafter, she became a member of the student chapter of the organization at the University of New Mexico, and that was the start of more than a decade-long association with the organization.
OPENING THE DOOR TO OPPORTUNITIES
After earning her undergraduate degree in organizational leadership and later an MBA with a concentration in financial management, in 2014 Córdova landed a job with General Mills in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For the first time in her life, Córdova would be thousands of miles away from her family and home in New Mexico. “Growing up in a Hispanic household, that’s really hard because we’re such a close-knit family, and family is everything,” she reflected. “It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made in my life, and it’s something that I needed — to feel supported by my familia,” she continued. Before moving to Minnesota, Córdova reached out to the ALPFA chapter there. “Finding a connection in a city that I had no ties JANUARY 8 - 15, 2020
to or I didn’t know anybody prior to moving, was really important to me, and so I leveraged ALPFA in that way,” she said. “By the time I even moved to Minnesota, I felt like I had a connection to that city.” During her time in Minnesota, ALPFA became her family away from home. That sense and feeling of family has been the crux of what has kept her involved in the or-

ARRIVING TO PHILADELPHIA
After about a year in Minnesota, a new job offer at General Mills presented Córdova with the decision of moving to Philadelphia. The difference between living in Questa and living in Philadelphia initially presented a bit of a culture shock. “Coming from a small rural town to a huge city, you kind of are forced to find your way... And it can be scary, it can be daunting,” said Córdova. However, she was once again able to find her family away from home through ALPFA.
From the moment she first became a member in 2009 to the present day, ALPFA has opened many doors for her — first as a student, and now as a professional. “It was my exposure to the unknown, what I didn’t know,” Córdova said of the organization. “It was my exposure to corporate America, it was my exposure to other cities that I had never traveled to.” “As I became a part of it, it has been my connection to the cities that I have moved to,” she continued.

Since coming to Philadelphia, Córdova has served three different roles at General Mills, where she is currently a customer account manager in the eastern region. She credits the opportunities, training, development and support she’s received at General Mills for helping build her into an even more well-rounded leader, which has paid dividends in her role at ALPFA, which included a three-year term as ALPFA Philadelphia’s vice president.

va classified her current president role as “the most rewarding.” “My passion for ALPFA continues to grow every year, every time I meet somebody new. But this role has allowed me to grow and expand my personal development in ways that I never thought I could,” she said. “It’s allowed me to lead a team full of extraordinary leaders, and has forced me to figure out ways of how we can start working together more collaboratively and how I, myself, can empower my team to come together and be better and do better, whether that’s personally or professionally.” What adds to the rewarding nature is the strength of the organization’s local chapter. That strength was recognized last year when ALPFA Philadelphia was named the 2019 Chapter of the Year during the annual ALPFA Convention this past August. This is more reason for the local chapter of ALPFA to continue in its mission of empowering, connecting and inspiring the next generation of Latino leaders, now under Córdova’s leadership. As a leader, Córdova brings three main values to her team: confidence, trust and respect. “Once you build those qualities, we can come together as a team and there will be no boundaries or
limitations,” she said. In her leadership approach, Córdova works to empower her team by putting herself in other people’s shoes and showing empathy when needed. “As leaders, sometimes you get caught up in whatever you want to accomplish without understanding the needs of your team… and when that happens, it kind of breaks apart the team,” she said. “So, for me, understanding both sides of the situation and finding the common place... and figuring out how we can work best together, that’s what I try to do as a leader.”
AN EYE TOWARDS GROWTH
Moving forward, Córdova hopes to continue working with other chapter leaders, organizations and individuals who share the same passion for the values of ALPFA.

With the Latino community expected to be a majority by the year 2050, Córdova believes the time is now for the Latino community to capitalize on the opportunity to make a long-lasting impact. “The work that we’re doing now through ALPFA and working with all these organizations [is] to make them understand that the fu-
ture is Latino,” she highlighted. This approach serves as a microcosm of how Córdova has approached each endeavor in her personal and professional life up to this point, as she always remembers where she came from, while appreciating where she’s heading. With each role, the question is asked: “What am I doing today to better myself for tomorrow?” As a young leader, Córdova hopes to continue changing lives and making an impact on others for many years to come. “I will hopefully be that role model for my nieces and nephews and everyone else, young and old, alike,” she said. “If I can make one change in somebody’s life, then I will be happy.”❚

Esa fuerza fue reconocida el año pasado cuando ALPFA Filadelfia fue nombrada como la Agrupación del año del 2019, durante una Convención anual de ALPFA realizada en el mes de agosto. Esto constituye un mayor motivo para que la agrupación local de ALPFA continúe su misión de potencializar, conectar e inspirar a la siguiente generación de líderes Latinos, que ahora se encuentran bajo el liderazgo de Córdova. Como líder, Córdova aporta tres valores principales a su equipo: confianza, fe y respeto. “Al haber desarrollado esas cualidades, podemos unirnos como un equipo y no habrá fronteras o límites”, dijo. En su enfoque hacia el liderazgo, Córdova trabaja por potencializar a su equipo al colocarse en los zapatos de los demás y mostrar empatía cuando sea necesario.
“Como líderes, a veces nos dejamos atrapar por aquello que queremos lograr sin entender las necesidades de nuestro equipo… y cuando eso sucede, tiende a separar al equipo”, dice Córdova. “Así que, para mí, entender ambos lados de la situación y encontrar un lugar común… y encontrar la mejor manera para trabajar juntos, es lo que intento hacer como líder”.
CON LA MIRADA PUESTA EN EL CRECIMIENTO
En adelante, Córdova espera seguir trabajando con otros líderes de agrupaciones, organizaciones y personas individuales que comparten la misma pasión por los valores de ALPFA. “En mi opinión, crecer significa tener un mayor impacto”, dijo. “Pienso que entre más sea el número de personas a las que podamos alcanzar, mayor [el] impacto que tenemos en nuestra comunidad y en el mundo”. Esta misión es aún más importante debido al panorama demográfico cambiante tanto de Filadelfia como de los EE. UU., y que se puede abordar mejor mediante la colaboración. Con la comunidad Latina que se espera sea la mayoría en el año 2050, Córdova cree que este es el momento para que la comunidad Latina aproveche la oportunidad de crear un impacto duradero. “El trabajo que realizamos ahora a través de ALPFA y al trabajar con todas estas organizaciones (es) para hacerlas entender que el futuro es Latino”, resaltó. Este enfoque funge como un microcosmo de la forma en que Córdova a abordado cada esfuerzo en su vida personal y profesional hasta ahora, ya que siempre recuerda de dónde vino, mientras aprecia hacia dónde se dirige. his past July, in collaboration with The Fragrance Group, Thalia Sodi a famous Mexican singer, songwriter, producer, actress, and entrepreneur, released her first fragrance collection inspired by the aromas and scents of her childhood. Since she was a little girl, one of Thalia’s passions has been fragrance. Some of her fondest memories are of playing in her mother’s dresser and trying on all of her perfumes. This inspired her to create a fragrance collection to offer women everywhere featuring beautiful, high-quality scents that are also affordable. “I grew up surrounded by my mother and sisters, all older than me. 1. What was your inspiration behind each scent? The scents are all very special to me. The inspiration for each came from the aromas that bring happy memories back to life. Absolute Amethyst: It was inspired by the affection for my country. Dahlia is Mexico's national flower, and it really has the same colorful energy and sensuality as Mexican people. Azure Crystal: It is all about summer vibes, freedom and happiness. It makes me want to jump in the ocean, float on the water and feel the magic. Diamond Petals: Brings me back to my childhood when I used to wear flowers in my hair, and it made me feel like a true princess.
Liquid Sun: Reminds me of the beautiful sunsets on the beaches of Mexico, when the sun disappears in the ocean and everything turns to gold. It is a powerful yet soft color that really inspires me. Blooming Opal: It was inspired by the power of minerals to cleanse the soul and the body. I believe it is important to always feel balanced and therefore, feel beautiful.
2. Being a big role model to the Latino community, coming to this country and accomplishing such milestones, what is the message you would like to give with your new collection to other Latina women here? I would like other Latina women to know we are a force to be reckoned with. This is our moment; this is our time to shine! We are strong, empowered women in all aspects of our lives. With this fragrance collection, I would like to reiterate to all women out there that we can all find strength, integrity, courage, and pride within ourselves.
3. Are you planning on coming out with more fragrances in the future? Yes, I would like to continue creating fragrances, and I’m already thinking and taking notes regarding the smells that would be ideal for fragrances for men. Stay tuned!.❚

e was 85 and had devoted much of his life to defending the civil rights of Latino Americans. Perhaps that's why he left this world with the peace of mind that he had done everything in his power for a community that has gone through very difficult times to achieve a status of equality and visibility in this country. Benny Martinez died of natural causes—and after dealing with several illnesses—last Sunday, Dec. 29, in Olmito, in his native Texas, according to
ENGLISH his daughter, Loretta Martinez Williams, who spoke with AP. Born in Goliad, Texas, Martinez attended segregated schools for Mexican-Americans until his family moved to Houston so his children "wouldn't have to pick cotton to live." He was also a war veteran, and served the U.S. Army as a doctor in Korea. Upon his return, he organized numerous boycotts and protests against companies that refused to hire Mexican-American citizens. As a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation's largest Latino rights organization, he advocated for his peers to be able to vote in elections by raising funds.

Also, if the first bidder does not complete settlement with the Sheriff within the thirty (30) day time limit and a second bid was registered at the sale, the second bidder shall be granted the same thirty (30) day time limit to make settlement with the Sheriff on his second bid. Thereafter, the Sheriff shall be at liberty to return the writ to court. A second bid must be registered on any property immediately after it is sold. The second bidder must present the same amount of deposit that the highest bidder delivers to the Sheriff at the sale. An extension of time under no circumstances will be granted or honored by the Sheriff whenever a second bid is registered on a property at the sale. The first bid or opening bid on each property shall be set by the City of Philadelphia. In no event will the successful bidder be allowed to settle on the property unless all the Sheriff’s costs are paid notwithstanding the final bid.
