THE “MAJORITY MINORITY” IS HERE PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP HAS DONE A LOT OF LATE TO SCARE MINORITIES IN THE U.S. BUT HE CAN’T STOP WHAT’S ALREADY SET IN STONE.

EL PRESIDENTE DONALD TRUMP HA HECHO LO SUFICIENTE PARA ASUSTAR A LAS MINORÍAS EN LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS, PERO NO PUEDE DETENER LO QUE YA ESTÁ ESCRITO.

o matter how much our president wants to believe it, he can not stop history from happening. To use the words of Lili Gil Valletta, the recent AL DIA Guest of the Public Forum on “Cultural Intelligence”, hosted at the Pyramid Club, in partnership with the Ad Club of Philadelphia: The United States of America is already “a majority minority nation.” What she means is simple, there are more individuals who used to be identified as “minorities” in the U.S. (African Americans, Latino Amnericans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans) than the so called “White people”. The “White” majority is no longer and, most likely, it scares President Trump. He grew up in the upper echelons of New York City, where the only minorities came in the form of servants to his father’s real estate empire. He doesn’t know a world of black billionaires and strong women politicians, and has definitely never had a Latina who can challenge his influence. So what does he do?

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL

Fear often brings the worst out of anyone, but those as self-absorbed as our president will do truly heinous things. They’ll permit the separation of families, the mistreatment and death of children, and host their very own “independence” day parade complete with tanks. The actions are meant to strike fear in those who strike fear in him. In the case of the U.S., striking fear in minorities is to veil them from their true potential. A potential that will steer the future of the country — that’s a foregone conclusion. All that’s left to be seen is if it will happen in 2020, in a presidential election as historic as no other in the United States of America.❚ - THE EDITOR

n Mexico, you just need to provide an email to apply for asylum. In the United States, the Trump administration has asked to access social media accounts and emails of any visa applicant, not only those they currently own but also those that they have opened in the last five years. These requirements, which previously only affected applicants marked by additional verification, will now affect 15 million visa applicants annually. The U.S. government argues this measure is about national security, as other American governments have done on countless occasions: "National security is our main priority when it comes to awarding visa applications." Of course, security for certain American governments is based on keeping enemies away

– meaning that faceless concept called terrorism.

BUT IS THIS REALLY SO IMPORTANT?

What you say in social media can be censored and judged by the biases or prejudices of others, including by immigration agencies in the United States. ISIS uses social media to incite terrorist acts and the agencies manage to imprison them. In the case of civilians, giving a political opinion in favor of or against the Trump administration, while requesting a visa, can generate doubts to the applicant if he or she wishes to comply with the right to freedom of speech. This could result in a form of self-censorship in social media due to migratory pressure. Censorship is also a form of coercion of liberties, faithfully established in the First Amendment of the Constitution. Another important point in obtaining this personal data is how they will be used. If the data becomes confidential it would not imply a greater threat. However, how can you trust anyone after cases like Cambridge Analytica? JULY 10 - 17, 2019

The weakest part of this measure is that apparently, it’s not really effective. According to Hina Shamsi, director of the National Security Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, "there is no evidence that such monitoring of social media is effective or fair, especially in the absence of criteria to guide the use of information from networks in the process of awarding visas.” In a recent report developed by the Department of Homeland Security in conjunction with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, concern was raised about the effectiveness of this type of monitoring. U.S. Customs and Immigration Service pilot programs have already shown that evaluators face a challenge in analyzing and interpreting the context in which an applicant makes a social media publication. However, there are always freedoms for censorship. Just take a look at ProPublica’s latest report about the private Facebook group used by Border Patrol agents to mock the death of migrants at the border. ❚

SIN EMBARGO, AUNQUE ELLA DECLARÓ VICTORIA HACE DOS SEMANAS, SU TRIUNFO NO ES SEGURO.

t would be great not only for Queens and all of New York City, but also for a Democratic Party gasping for fresh air and desperately in need of courage and renewal if it is going to have a chance to beat Donald Trump in 2020. Like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cabán, 31 and also of Puerto Rican descent, a former public defender and avowed democratic socialist did not have the support of the Democratic Party, which backed her opponent, Melinda Katz, the Queens borough president and a longtime party operative.

Not surprisingly, Gov. Andrew Cuomo endorsed Katz. Cabán had promised to end the criminalizing of Latinos and other minorities that has been the unwritten law of the land for many years. On the other hand and underlining the power struggle taking place within the Democratic Party, the two most progressive presidential candidates, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, endorsed Cabán. Last July 3, New York Board of Elections invalidated over 2,000 absentee ballots changing, at least temporarily the election result. With an almost negligible difference of 16 votes favoring Katz, the race will go to a manual recount this week. But as the digital newsletter The City concludes: “No matter what the final result, Cabán’s strong showing appears destined to stagger an already ailing Queens Democratic machine.” A very good thing that needs to be replicated as soon as possible at the national level. ❚

gobernador Andrew Cuomo apoyara a Katz. ❚

ouring scorn on the Trump administration's chaotic implementation of anti-immigrant policies is - at present an exercise in futility. Denying the fact that this is the product of a deeper historical issue that has plagued the United States for decades would be irresponsible and wrong. A report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finally laid bare a truth that has for years been championed by the media, human rights lawyers and a few legislators: there is a humanitarian crisis in immigration detention centers in the United States.

riots," the document explains. The report confirms what Democratic members of Congress denounced last week after visiting two more centers at the border, where they discovered that officials told women to "drink water from the toilets." Detainees have little or no access to showers, hygiene services, medical care or basic supplies, and are forced to sleep on the floor. More than a year after the application of the government's zero tolerance policy, and after the constant attempts to strip asylum seekers from due process rights on U.S. soil, the situation has taken a turn for the grim.

THE UNDENIABLE TRUTH

BUT IS THIS REALLY SOMETHING NEW?

The agency’s watchdog said that since May the conditions in a detention center for undocumented immigrants in El Paso, TX, were so bad that it was now "a time bomb,” debunking the administration's denial of any wrongdoing. The DHS acting secretary, Kevin McAleenan, told the media last Friday reports of poor conditions for migrants were “unsubstantiated,” according to NBC News. However, the detailed report of the department itself radically contradicts what the White House plots to make its citizens believe. The desperation of the detainees subjected to long periods of confinement in groups exceeding "up to five times the capacity of the cells" has made the situation close to intolerable and the agents "have had to arm themselves for fear of possible

No, it is not new. And here is why: The United States will forever be stamped with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a welcoming beacon to those tempest-tossed, as one iconic image; an immigration inspection center, the other, used as for immigrants coming to America from 1892 until 1954. In those more than 60 years, Ellis Island saw millions of newly arrived immigrants, many weighed down by parcels bearing their belongings and wearing their national dress, pass through its doors. It has been estimated that 40% of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one ancestor to Ellis Island. Despite the fact that during the Depression the immigration rate was "below zero," according to the Center for Immi-

gration Studies, the country's economic recovery was due in large part to the agricultural development programs promoted by the Bracero Program - totally manned by immigrants. The persecution of President Ronald Reagan of undocumented Haitian immigrants and the search for a solution to prevent their arrival in the country by President George H.W. Bush resulted in the use of the Guantánamo base as a detention facility. The creation of the Jordan Commission — named for its chairwoman Rep. Barbara Jordan — gave way to the strengthening of immigration statutes. The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 transformed detention into the first port of call for an immigration policy of the U.S. government against undocumented immigration, regardless of the political party that was in control of the White House. By 2008, there were 230,000 detainees in the country, three times the number of detainees in 1999. While this number has grown exponentially, violations of human rights, and especially the Sixth Amendment to the

8•

Constitution, have always been a reality. A 2009 Human Rights Watch report denounced that the medical care system in immigrant detention centers in the United States was "dangerously inadequate.” "Women in detention described violations such as shackling pregnant detainees or failing to follow up on signs of breast and cervical cancer, as well as basic affronts to their dignity," said Meghan Rhoad, a researcher in the women's rights division at Human Rights Watch. "Because immigration detention is the fastest-growing form of incarceration in the United States, these abuses are especially dangerous. They remain largely hidden from public scrutiny or effective oversight." That is to say that this is a time bomb that has been ticking for many years now. While it is true that the situation since the Trump inauguration is drastically different - his distance from political correctness and his instigation to violence have unmasked the scope of these practices - the responsibility rests in the hands of a system whose rot has been hibernating for years. ❚

❚ JULY 10 - 17, 2019

More than 50 years ago, Chin’s parents decided to move to the U.S. due to the political unrest taking place in Hong Kong at the time. As an immigrant herself, Chin reminds others of the fact that all of us came to this country from somewhere. “As immigrants, we bring to this country our heritage, our culture, and our rich tradition,” she said. “We, as immiJULY 10 - 17, 2019

We make America rich.” After graduating from Temple University, Chin started her nearly four decade long career teaching underserved students in the School District of Philadelphia. She’s currently the chair of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC), where she helps raise funds for Asian students pursuing paths to college. “It is this belief that diversity equals richness that drives me,” she said.

RAY YABOR

Since coming to the U.S. from Cuba, Yabor has taken advantage of the many opportunities this country has given him. Those advantages helped him build a 503 Corporation from scratch, where for 18 years, he helped generate jobs and provide services for the corporate and government sectors. Now retired, he couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities he’s gotten since arriving to the country. “There’s no way that I could ever repay this wonderful country for what it’s given me,” he said.❚

hen Lili Gil Valletta first came to the United States of America from Colombia, she landed far from the corporate boardrooms she now operates in with ease. At 17, Valletta was sent stateside alone, by parents wanting to keep her protected from the violence in Colombia stoked by Pablo Escobar and narcotrafficking. “I didn’t know English and I came with a student visa, pocket translator, suitcase and a lot of dreams,” said Valletta in a visit to AL DÍA on May 29, 2019. The place she arrived in the U.S. couldn’t have been further from her home country. Valletta spent her first years in America honing her English at a small Christian school in Keene, Texas — a small municipality of 6,000 just south of Dallas-Fort Worth.

“Talk about a culture shock,” said Valletta. Her presence was also a culture shock for those from the small Texas town. Valletta’s native Spanish was associated with nearby Mexico, but in explaining her Colombian heritage, she was immediately associated with the “narcos” she escaped. “I think that was my first exposure to the idea of culture,” said Valletta. Nowadays, individuals rightly point out the injustice of such assumptions about another’s culture, but Valletta saw no discrimination. She saw the misun-

derstanding of her culture as an opportunity to teach. “I took it as a project to educate people,” said Valletta. It’s the same approach Valletta would use years later to conceptualize her idea of cultural intelligence and sell it to boardrooms across the world. But first she had to get a seat at the table.

CAREER BEGINNINGS

In her visit to AL DÍA in May, an older Valletta described her younger self as a “nerd”. At Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Valletta earned a Bachelor’s in Business and graduated with a 3.8 GPA — a ‘low’

mark she still remembers for getting one ‘C’ in a choir class. “It starts with excellence and dedication from day one,” said Valletta of her career approach. Afterwards, she left Keene for the University of Colorado, where she earned her Master’s of Business Administration. Her first job came with Disney, where she played a role in the creation of Celebration, Florida — Walt Disney’s planned town near the Walt Disney resort in Orlando, Florida. Valletta worked in the partnership between Florida Health and Walt Disney to create Celebration’s health system. It was all part of Walt Disney’s vision. “If you break your leg at one of the parks, you end up at a hospital that looks like La La Land,” said Valletta. During the groundbreaking of Celebration Health, Valletta met leaders from Johnson and Johnson, one of the many partners on the Disney project. They encouraged her to apply for a leadership program in the company and she did. “They kind of stole me away,” said Valletta.

EL CAMBIO A JOHNSON AND JOHNSON

PORTADA emular a Heinsen.

quickly rise in the company’s ranks. “Let me be in the C suite before 40,” Valletta recalled telling herself. It was an obsession she now looks back on as unhealthy, but the initiative ran in her family. Valletta’s mother graduated from university in Colombia as one of the only female chemical engineers and through perseverance, became the first female executive at a big oil company in the country. At the time of Valletta’s change to Johnson and Johnson, there was only one female in the C suite, named JoAnn Heisen — the company’s Chief Information Officer. Valletta made it her mission to get to know and emulate Heisen. “I stalked her for like five months,” said Valletta. “I told her: ‘I want to be just like you.’” While it may seem overzealous, Valletta’s approach to business allowed her to quickly climb within Johnson and Johnson. Before 30, she had a team of more than 50 reporting to her. “It was insane that they trusted me with that,” recalled Valletta. But her go-getting attitude is one that would come to define Valletta’s career, and one that inspired the biggest risk she ever took.

A FAST RISE AND AN EPIPHANY

In her 10 years at Johnson and Johnson, Valletta rose to

be arguably the most powerful Hispanic at the company. Because of this, she was tasked with organizing the other Latinos and Latinas in the workforce. She did so under the banner of HOLA — The Hispanic Organization of Leadership and Achievement. To Valletta, HOLA was not just a tool to organize people. She wanted it to produce results for the company. “I didn’t want to just be the Cinco de Mayo party in the lunchroom,” said Valletta. For results, Valletta began looking at the demographic data available on the U.S. Latino population. What she found was a massive untapped market of potential for business. But to reach it, Valletta and Johnson and Johnson needed to understand its intricacies. And so, cultural intelligence was born.

CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE?

“This is not about marketing. This is about organizational transformation, a new way of measuring ourselves,” said Valletta. In more concrete terms, cultural intelligence is the ability to proactively recognize trends as a commercial advantage. For Valletta at Johnson and Johnson, that trend was the rapidly-growing Hispanic population in the U.S.

While no longer the largest immigrant population coming to the U.S., the population growth spurred by Hispanics and other minorities in the U.S. has outpaced that of the white population. “We are now a majority minority nation,” said Valletta. With that knowledge in hand, she presented a strategy guided by cultural intelligence to the Johnson and Johnson board. They loved it, but wanted to outsource the work. When Valletta couldn’t find a company to do it right, she made the plunge into starting a business that could.

SELLING POTENTIAL

“I didn’t want to just be the Cinco de Mayo party in the lunchroom.”

When Valletta left Johnson and Johnson, it was 2009 and many were still piecing together the damage done by the 2008 housing market collapse. “My J&J people thought I was crazy,” said Valletta. The timing may have seemed poor for any entrepreneur, but it turned out that there was an acute need for what Valletta’s concept of cultural intelligence provided. The 2010 census was right around the corner, giving Valletta and her business partner fresh data to take to the boardrooms of potential clients. Valletta’s company is called CulturIntel, and uses AI algorithms to analyze online cultural trends to formulate marketing strategies. However, when she enters a boardroom today, she’s not selling her company. The education she provides is no different than the cultural education she gave those in Keene, Texas, as a 17-year-old immigrant from Colombia. Now, there’s just more numbers involved. “I’m not selling us, but the amount of money they’re leaving on

the table,” said Valletta. The sales pitch has skyrocketed her to international fame, reserving her spots on national television and a seat at the table with President Trump. A point of discussion while at AL DÍA was the competition between U.S. and Chinese companies. For the U.S. to win the battle, cultural intelligence must be utilized. The country must draw from the majority minority population. “There’s no other pool of future workforce but black and brown kids,” said Valletta. What hangs in the balance is the global influence of the U.S. “What role do we want the country to play in the greater scheme of the world?” she said.

CHANGING THE MINORITY NARRATIVE

By putting emphasis on the growing diversity of the country, Valletta is also empowering minorities. “Those of us that have the unique bicultural, bilingual advantage,” said Valletta, “have the opportunity to rise above quicker.” In the strategy of the current market, it’s beyond inclusion of minorities as a requirement for diversity. Instead, it’s the reality that inclusion as necessary for survival as a business in the changing, multicultural world. “That is what you need to continue to innovate and stay competitive,” said Valletta. The intelligence can come as a result of being born into a particular culture, or it can be learned through study or lived experience. For those who have diverse identities and backgrounds, she seeks to change the victim narratives often associated with them across the country. But she knows she can’t do it alone. “It’s like the beehive,” said Valletta. “Everybody must be involved.” ❚

the United States for more than 30 years. She went into sanctuary on June 2, 2017, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) refused to grant her stay of removal request. But no matter how often her story was covered in the media, and how much awareness has grown — the group that advocates for her case and immigrant rights, called Rosa Belongs Here, has more than 1,000 supporters who have subscribed to receive updates — Sabido felt that there were parts of her story that were missing from the broader public narrative.

‘WITH OUR OWN VOICES’

In the fall of 2017, a few months after first going into sanctuary, Sabido began to think about how she and other immigrants living in sanctuary across the U.S. could develop a platform to share their full stories as individuals, beyond the headlines. “With our own voices, you can perceive our feelings and what’s important and how we feel about it, and the things that we left behind and the things that we are looking for,” Sabido said. That idea eventually grew to become “Sanctuary Stories,” a new multimedia exhibition led by Sabido, Sandra Lopez, Ingrid Encalada Latorre, and Araceli Velasquez - four women living in sanctuary in Colorado who have spearheaded a movement for a resolution in Colorado that would grant them a path to citizenship. The storytelling project took off once Sabido, who had been exploring funding options for her idea, connected with Philadelphia-based media educator and audio pro-

ducer Ariel Goodman, director of “Sanctuary Stories,” in August 2018. The podcast, video, photography, music, and storytelling pieces of the project, along with a website currently in the works, are the result of a year’s work and collaboration. Its initial public premiere was held July 5 at Puentes de Salud, a health clinic and community center in South Philadelphia that serves immigrants and the undocumented community. The event doubled as a fundraiser to enable the director and team to present the travelling exhibition in Colorado, along with each of the women living in sanctuary who have led the project. Sabido said she is certain of the impact that storytelling can have to educate people about the experiences of many immigrants. “The more people know about the sanctuary stories, the more support as we gain, the more people that learn and get educated about immigration issues, then we break this concept of stereotypes,” she said.❚

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE

T

On May 29, 2019, AL DÍA, in partnership with the Ad Club of Philadelphia, hosted a public forum on “Cultural Intelligence” led by its creator, Lili Gil Valletta. “Unlock the Power of Cultural Intelligence”, held at the Pyramid Club, took attendees on a journey through Valletta’s life as a Colombian immigrant at 17 to her realization of “Cultural Intelligence” and how it is a must for any business today.

THE PRESENTATION

As a 17-year-old, Valletta arrived in the U.S. knowing no English, but brought “a lot of dreams.” After learning the language and receiving two business degrees, she found herself at Disney before climbing the ladder of Johnson and Johnson — becoming the youngest executive at the company. She left J&J in 2009 to start CulturIntel, a company based around her idea of “Cultural Intelligence”. The idea has her company working for some of the world’s biggest corporations and got her a seat at the table with the president.

THE GUESTS

In addition to Valletta, the AL DÍA Guest of the Public Forum, in attendance was Jill Deardorff, Ginger Kochmer, Vaughn Taylor, the AL DÍA staff and more!

DESBLOQUEANDO EL PODER DE LA INTELIGENCIA CULTURAL 6

E

MEDIA PLANNING & BUYING

he only business in America that is protected by a Constitutional Amendment is one of the most challenged in today’s marketplace. That is the beloved Press, and our cherished right to free speech - which our founding fathers sought to protect in the Carta Magna. Little did they know that the practice of independent journalism in America, as it evolved over the last two centuries, was going to be turned on its head. One thousand and eight hundred newspapers have folded across the country and massive layoffs from coast to coast that have left thousands of experienced writers and reporters back stomping the pavement — pounding it daily with little hope - just as the journalists that created AL DÍA in North Philly did it 25 years ago. Unemployed, and, in the case of yours truly, totally out of luck. At that time, in 1991, the beat for a “Hispanic Reporter” was yet to exist in the mostly White newsrooms of our city. The “minority quota,” occasionally represented by one or two African Americans, did not include Latino voices. The “Parity Project,” launched by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists at the beginning of the 21st century, never succeeded in increasing the percentage of Hispanic representation of reporters beyond 2% or 3%. Today the U.S. Hispanic population is

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL

rapidly approaching 20%. Technology finally hit news media companies like a hurricane and it made everybody forget what the whole business of including Hispanics, in addition to African-Americans and Asians, was all about. It is in this challenging context —nothing new to AL DÍA— that we just announced the launching of AL DÍA Digital Media (ADM), the new inhouse, cross cultural agency that will provide an array of solutions in a marketplace radically modified, not so much by technology, as by the changing demographics of the country. Back to Entrepreneurial Journalism; back to doing what we have done for 25 years. And that is earning a living on our own, so we can keep the practice of independent journalism alive. Something we care deeply about and the reason why we pound the pavement.❚
