The war between Russia and Ukraine, following the Russian invasion, has seriously affected the world economy.

On one hand, as a result of the sanc-

of The Dispaced, which tells the story of life in a Latino workers’ neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles in 1999. The central conflict is the pressure to displace them to renovate the place and for others to get there. “Although I experienced street gang rivalries growing up, in the novel the street violence targets a different population: the gentrifiers”, Ribera says.

Ribera d’Ebre lived as a child near the Los Angeles airport, in the coastal region of LAX, in a typical Mexican neighborhood. His parents came from the state of Jalisco (Mexico). He grew up in that environment and his footprints can be seen in The Displaced, his first novel, published on June 30th. “Although I prefer to be considered an American writer and filmmaker, there will always be people who consider me Latino”, he answered in an interview with AL DÍA. In contrast, “I lived four years in Latin America and there I was considered very American”.z

During the Carter administration, he was fired as Chair of the Hispanic Advisory Commission for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) for criticizing its immigration reform proposals. Under Reagan, Yzaguirre laying into domestic policy differences left NCLR without federal funding and fighting for its life.

In the 90s, Yzaguirre blasted George H.W. Bush’s affirmative action stance, and stayed loud through the Clinton years for its lack of Latino cabinet appointees. As the new millennium came, George W. Bush was slammed for his administration’s overall poor record on Hispanic issues.

Under President Barack Obama, Yzaguirre got an ambassador post to the Dominican Republic, a position he held until 2013. z

EXPOSING INJUSTICES

As a writer, he also wanted to explore issues of systemic racism, poverty, gang violence, drugs, etc. all of which he has experienced as well.

“And yes, those problems still do exist today, which I think is what will make the book relatable to certain people. And just because I don't experience it personally today, does not mean it doesn't still exist. You can drive through many communities in Los Angeles and visibly see all the above mentioned. And while I did grow up in one of the most economically-disadvantaged and marginalized communities in Los Angeles, I now live in one of the wealthiest suburbs in Los Angeles. Everyday I have gratitude for my trajectory,” said Ribera d’Ebre

The fact that one of the main characters becomes an investigative journalist was a way of honoring the profession and championing the work it takes to write an objective story.

“However, I also explore the character's shortcomings, which is that even when you try to be as objective as possible, subjectivity often gets the best of us. I simply wanted to show this nuance as a human flaw, so even when you attempt to be a watchdog of democracy, our biases can also guide us in certain directions. But I still have faith in journalism, yes!” he added.

A regular contributor for the Huffington Post, Ribera d’Ebre says he has always been a writer.

“I wrote poetry as a kid, rap music as a teenager, and moved on to non-fiction/ essays at the university,” he explained. The first manuscript-length work that he wrote was philosophy.

“At first, I wrote because I felt like I had a message for the world, back in my early utopian coming-of-age days, but nowadays I write because I don't know how to do anything else,” he said.

THINK LOCALLY, ACT GLOBALLY

Although the novel is set up in a Latino community of Los Angeles, The Displaced is meant for a wider audience. “‘Think locally, act globally,’ is what guided the narrative,” he said.

The book is informed by Albert Camus' The Plague (the original title of his novel was The Plague @ Silicon Beach), as he explores some of the issues Camus did. “So, if Camus' fictional plague story based in the port town of Oran, Algeria can have a deep impact on someone like myself, then I think The Displaced can have an impact on people in different parts of the world.”

Ribera d’Ebre holds an MFA in creative writing and his work has been featured in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Design LA Magazine, Juxtapoz, Joyland and other publications. He is also a film and documentary director.

“For film, it came naturally for me to do documentaries because of my experience in non-fiction writing. So, in a way it's like a toolbox. I come up with an idea, and I choose whatever medium suits the story the best: essay, short story, novel, screenplay, documentary, or art show,” he concluded. z

EXPONIENDO LAS INJUSTICIAS

Como escritor, se propuso también explorar otros problemas que experimentó en propia piel, como el racismo sistémico, la pobreza, la violencia de las bandas, las drogas, etc. “Todos estos problemas siguen existiendo hoy en día, por eso creo que mi novela es vinculable a muchos tipos de lectores. Que no los esté experimentando personalmente hoy, no significa que no sigan existiendo. Si uno se pone a conducir por muchas comunidades de Los Ángeles y ver todo lo mencionado anteriormente. Y aunque crecí en una de las comunidades económicamente más desfavorecidas y marginadas de Los Ángeles, ahora vivo en uno de los suburbios más ricos de Los Ángeles. Cada día doy gracias por mi trayectoria”. Por otro lado, el hecho de que uno de los personajes principales se convierta en un periodista de investigación fue una forma de honrar la profesión y defender el trabajo que supone escribir una historia objetiva.

“Sin embargo, también exploro los defectos del personaje: por ejemplo, que incluso cuando intentas ser lo más objetivo posible, la subjetividad a menudo saca lo mejor de nosotros. Quería mostrar este matiz como un defecto humano, de modo que incluso cuando intentas ser un guardián de la democracia, nuestros prejuicios también pueden guiarnos en ciertas direcciones. Pero, sí, sigo teniendo fe en el periodismo”, añadió.

Colaborador habitual del Huffington Post, Ribera d’Ebre afirma que siempre se ha sentido escritor. “Escribí poesía de niño, rap de adolescente y pasé a la no ficción/ensayo en la universidad”, explicó. El primer manuscrito que escribió fue un ensayo sobre Filosofía.

“Al principio, escribía porque sentía que tenía un mensaje para el mundo, eran mis primeros días de madurez utópica, pero hoy en día escribo porque no sé hacer otra cosa”.

PIENSA LOCALMENTE, ACTÚA GLOBALMENTE

Aunque la novela está ambientada en una comunidad latina de Los Ángeles, ‘The Dispaced’ está destinada a un público más amplio. “Piensa localmente, actúa globalmente”, es lo que ha guiado la narración”, dijo. De hecho, el libro se inspira directamente en ‘La peste’, de Albert Camus (el título original de su novela era: “La peste en Silicon Beach”), ya que explora algunos de los temas que el escritor francés del siglo pasado trató en su novela. “Así que, si una historia ficticia como La Peste de Camus, basada en la ciudad portuaria de Orán, Argelia, puede tener un profundo impacto en alguien como yo, entonces creo que “The Dispaced” puede tener un impacto en la gente de diferentes partes del mundo”.
